Are you an iOS developer eyeing the Chromecast? You better ask permission first
Yesterday's announcement of Google's new Chromecast accessory could mean big things for iOS developers who want to throw their content on to the big screen without worrying about wires, but tucked away in Google's developer portal is a rather interesting note regarding the Google Cast API required to make an app compatible with the new device:
You may not publicly distribute or ship your Google Cast application without written permission from Google, per the terms of service described below.
This opaque requirement for Chromecast-enabled apps stands in stark contrast to Google's much more lax approach to open app development, and it's not particular

Google drops free Netflix Chromecast promotion a day after launch
Three free months of Netflix with the purchase of Google's $35 Chromecast dongle sure sounded too good to be true. Turns out it was -- or at least too good to last longer than a day. Google's pulling the plug on the promotion, telling The Los Angeles Times that it couldn't keep things going, "due to overwhelming demand." So good on those folks who got in early, and while the streaming plug-in still has a pretty sweet price point, it's not quite the $11 post-subscription deal it was yesterday.

Google's New Nexus 7 Fails to Attract iPad Owners [iOS Blog]
According to electronics buyback site Gazelle.com, while Google's newly introduced Nexus 7 has proven to be a popular upgrade choice for users who already own the current version of the tablet, it isn't attracting iPad owners. The site told TechCrunch that after the new Nexus 7 was unveiled, there was a 333 percent increase in the number of Nexus 7 trade-ins compared to the same day last week, marking Gazelle's biggest Nexus 7 trade-in day to date. In the days ahead of Google's announcement, the site saw a 442 percent increase in the number of trade-ins.

Penguin offers to end ebook deals with Apple
Apple's ebook price-fixing cases are now in the settlement stage in the US and Europe, and the latest word from the EU is that Penguin has become the last publisher to offer to end ebook pricing restriction deals with Apple.

Apple buying back many shares of AAPL
Last April, Apple announced plans to increase its share repurchasing program from US$10 billion to $60 billion. Apple at the time noted that this represented the "largest single share repurchase authorization in history."
While the full buyback program is slated to be finished by the end of 2015, Apple has already began buying back shares.
Philip Elmer-DeWitt of Fortune reports:
By my calculation, the company spent $16 billion last quarter ($4 billion in cash, $12 billion through the so-called accelerated share repurchase program) to purchase 36 million of its own shares at an average price of just over $444.

Ahead of a "very busy fall" for Apple, Mac mini ship times on many Apple Online Stores have slipped to 5-7 business days. News: Report: New iPhone users unable to activate phones
New iPhone users have reported that they’ve been unable to activate their phones, as it appears that Apple’s activation servers are experiencing an outage. An AT&T employee has reportedly confirmed the outage. A number of threads discussing activation problems have also popped up in Apple support forums. "Debrickifying" an iPhone 5
I got my share of flak from TUAW readers when I wrote a post three weeks ago bemoaning the fact that my iPhone 5 -- which was running iOS 7 beta -- lost battery power on the first day of a vacation and went into an endless restart loop. Yes, dear readers, I am well aware of the fact that Apple points out that you shouldn't run beta software on a mission critical device, so I deserved what I got -- a nice three-week-long respite from checking my iPhone every few minutes. Apple Could Owe $500 Million After Being Found Guilty in E-Book Antitrust Case
After being found guilty in federal court of conspiring to artificially inflate e-book prices, legal experts are estimating that Apple could owe as much as $500 million in damages. GigaOm has shared a chart provided to the federal judge in the case by the Texas attorney general. It shows how much in damages the five publishers have been found liable and how much they have paid in settlements. Verizon asks President Obama to veto iPhone ban
Last June, ITC handed down an order banning Apple from importing older AT&T-based models of the iPhone and iPad after finding that they infringed upon a Samsung patent. The specific models encompassed by the ban include the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 and the first two generations of the iPad.
The ITC ruling is final, and the only way for Apple to get around it is to secure a presidential veto.
The ban is scheduled to go into effect on August 5th, and while the iPhone 3G and 3GS aren't active devices in Apple's product line, the iPhone 4 still continues to sell impressively well.
Consequently, Apple isn't the only entity worried about the impending product ban.

Most Apple owners are familiar with the UDID, aka serial number, for their iOS device, but did you know that your Mac has a similar hardware UUID too? In this post, I will show you where to find it, so you can use it in beta testing.
If you ever volunteer to test a beta Mac app, you will likely need to provide the developer with this hardware UUID. This alphanumeric value is used by the developer to provision an Adhoc version of the software specifically for your Mac. Finding your UUID is not too difficult once you figure out where it is located in OS X.

As noted by ZDNet, scammers have launched a new round of phishing emails on the heels of an outage of Apple's Developer Center late last week. The email offers the recipient access back into their accounts if they click on a link posing as an official Apple page. However, the page is actually located on another site and proceeds to take the account credentials of the user if they log in on the page. Phishing attacks targeting Apple customers are regular occurrences given the size of the company's user base. But with many casual users perhaps only vaguely aware of Apple having had a recent problem with some of its online services, they may now be more likely to fall victim to such an attack.

European Commission Accepts Proposal by Penguin to End Apple E-Book Pricing Deal
European regulators have accepted a promise by the British media group Penguin and German media conglomerate Bertelsmann to scrap deals on electronic books, also known as "e-books", with Apple which were found to be in breach of European competition policy. Penguin was not the only company in the firing line. Back in December 2012, the Commission criticized the practices of four large publishers, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Holtzbrinck and Harper Collins, of working with Apple via an "agency model" whereby the publishers set the retail price and the distributor takes a fee (30% in Apple's case). Under the "wholesale model" in place before Apple entered the market, publishers sell their goods to distributors for fixed prices and allow the distributors decide the final retail prices. The agency model came under fire for causing a rise in retail prices of e-books compared to the wholesale model championed by Amazon and Google. Beendet Apple bald Produktion des iPhone 5?
Gerüchten aus dem asiatischen Raum zufolge könnte Apple das baldige Ende der iPhone 5 Produktion planen. Anstelle dass nach der Präsentation der nächsten iPhone-Generation die beiden vorhergehenden iPhone-Generationen zu einem reduzierten Preis auf dem Markt verbleiben — wie Apple dies bisher zu machen pflegte —, will sich Apple angeblich auf die Produktion eines günstigeren iPhones konzentrieren.
Das Portal «etnews» stützt die eigenen Erwartungen auf die Tatsache, nach welcher sich die Produktion der im iPhone 5 verbauten In-Cell-Displays lediglich bei hohen Volumen kostengünstig bewerkstelligen lässt. Tony Fadell details his journey from Apple to Nest
Tony Fadell may not have the same level of name recognition as, say, Jony Ive, but Fadell was unquestionably an important cog in Apple's climb to greatness in the early 2000s. Sometimes referred to as the "father of the iPod", Fadell helped churn out 18 different generations of iPod models before leaving Apple in 2008 and subsequently re-emerging on the tech scene with the Nest Learning Thermostat.
In a recent article written for the New York Times, Fadell himself details his journey from a young kid growing up in Michigan to an important member of Apple's executive team, and everything in between.
Fadell notes that his fascination with computing began in grade school after taking a summer programming class. From there on end, he was hooked.

djay 2 now available, on sale for limited time
Djay is perhaps one of the best apps ever. The later video-based version, vjay is nothing short of an incredible feat of software engineering. I got a peek at djay 2, a standalone new app for iPad and iPhone/iPod touch, and it blew me away. I also got to meet the creators, and now that I understand how the original djay was created by someone who has actually worked as a DJ, I appreciate the small touches in the software all the more.

Today AT&T announced eight new 4G LTE markets as part of its continuing push to rollout the service across the country. The move brings the company's reported coverage zones for the service to 336 regions in the USA.

Retailer shows off new store concept via eight iPads, never gets them back
Let this be a lesson to all of you business-minded iPad owners out there: showing off your plans to clients using your pricey slate may leave you entirely tablet-less. Guampdn reports such was the case for DFS Galleria, a duty-free luxury retailer bidding for a spot in the Guam International Airport. The company -- along with several others bidding for a spot in the concourse -- showcased its plans for a new shop space to airport representatives, but what set DFS apart was that it decided to use eight iPads to display its proposal rather than use simple paper binders.
Rather than returning the tablets to DFS after a decision was made -- for which DFS's proposal didn't make the cut -- the airport is hanging on to them, as per

Ibrahim Balic talks Dev Center downtime with iMore
Last Thursday Apple's developer site suddenly went offline. Apple announced the interruption was attributable to an "intruder" who was attempting to access the personal information Apple's developers. So who was responsible for the downtime? A Turkish security researcher named Ibrahim Balic thinks he might be the cause. He caused a stir this week with the release of a YouTube video explaining exactly what security holes he reported to Apple, and what went wrong.
