Finish 2.0 for iPhone adds reminders, rewards and more
Last January I reviewed Finish for iPhone (US$0.99), a task management app that went on to win an Apple Design Award. Today, version 2.0 has been released with some sweet new features, including pesky reminders and rewards.
My favorite new feature is the "Bother Me" reminders. It's similar to my beloved Due in that it won't stop nagging you until you act. Finish reminds you hourly that a certain task must be completed. No more forgetting this and that.
The rewards feature is interesting, too. As you get things down, you can earn real-world rewards via Kiip

What iOS 7 means for enterprise developers
Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, is nearing release, and over at VentureBeat, Solstice Mobile CEO J Schwan offered up a guest post positing that iOS 7 is "the most noteworthy iOS upgrade since the iPhone first hit the market in 2007." Schwan is taking the view that "organizations that do not take advantage of iOS 7's new enterprise features will end up serving an outdated app experience to a market of future-hungry end users."

Walmart launches trade-in program with special iOS offers till August 25
Trade-in programs are common among big retailers like Best Buy and Amazon, but there's one ubiquitous icon in the American market place that has up until now not tipped its toe in the water of buybacks. iCloud.com beta gets iOS 7-like redesign
Apple has redesign the iCloud.com beta website to match the look and feel of iOS 7. Now when users navigate to beta.icloud.com they are greeted with new icons for Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Reminders, and Find My iPhone, plus a new animated blurred background. All the web apps listed have also gotten a redesign inspired by iOS 7, which may give some hint to what OS X will look like if Apple designed to port iOS 7's design influence to the desktop.

Apple Bought Matcha For its Content Recommendation Algorithms
Earlier this week, news broke that Apple acquired video discovery and recommendation startup Matcha.tv, a service designed to aggregate popular content from streaming video sites like Netflix, iTunes, Hulu, and Amazon Prime to offer its users a list of content available across all of the services. Judge to determine damages in Apple ebook case
The Mac Observer's Jeff Gamet has written a thoughtful analysis of the continuing Department of Justice legal battle against Apple regarding ebook pricing. As you'll remember, Judge Denise Cote found Apple guilty of conspiring with a group of book publishers to raise book prices. Now Judge Cote has said that she'll bring the company back to the courthouse in May of 2014 to impose damages.
The US Department of Justice, which brought the case against Apple in the first place, has asked Judge Cote to slap the company with a ten-year plan that would force oversight of Apple's contract negotiations and business activities. Apple's already responded to the plan,

Plants vs Zombies 2: First look
Right now, my iPad is my enemy. On it is Plants vs Zombies 2 (free, or more realistically, "free but you are an IAP target waiting to be plucked repeatedly"), just released last night and since about 11PM yesterday, well, let's just say sleep and work went by the wayside.

Apple falls on Forbes list of innovative companies
Since 2011, Forbes has issued the Most Innovative Companies List, ranking the top 100 of what it considers to be the companies that benefit both from existing innovations and what's anticipated to happen in the future. WatchESPN Updated With Split-Screen Live and On-Demand Viewing for iPad [iOS Blog]
ESPN has updated its WatchESPN app with new support for split-screen viewing of content. For example, users could watch a live stream of one of ESPN's many channels while simultaneously pulling up some on-demand video content or live sports scores. The feature is exclusive to newer iPads and the iPad mini currently, but will be coming to other devices like the Apple TV and Xbox in the future. AAPL shareholders to receive dividends today
Apple will pay its shareholders another quarterly dividend today. Shareholders of record as of August 12th will receive US$3.05 per share. With over 908 million outstanding shares, that means Apple will spend $2.7 billion today giving money back to its shareholders.
However, as AppleInsider points out, Apple is actually spending $110 million less this quarter on dividends because the company spent $16 billion buying 36 million of its own shares last quarter. Apple Exploring Methods for Gifting Media Content Through NFC [iOS Blog]
A newly-published patent application from Apple (via AppleInsider) describes a method to allow users to "gift" media content purchased via iTunes and from their own libraries to other users through near-field communication (NFC), suggesting that the technology may eventually find a way onto iOS devices in the near future. The patent, which was filed back in March of this year and stretches over a lengthy 63 pages, describes a system whereby:an offer and acceptance of a selected gift file is accomplished between a gifter device and a receiving giftee device using a near-field communication (NFC) connection.

China Mobile is the world's largest mobile carrier, and for Apple, the company represents a way to revive slumping sales in its second largest market. While both companies would benefit from having the iPhone on China Mobile's network, a number of commercial and technical issues have made that impossible. However, those barriers may be coming down in the near future, paving the way for Apple's flagship smartphone to run on the China Mobile network.

Apple updates App Store Review Guidelines with new rules on kids, gambling apps
Apple has updated its App Store Review Guidelines, which explains to developers what an app may and may not do. Though the updated Guidelines have many small changes, the two sections that saw the biggest revisions were for apps aimed at gamblers and children.
Gambling apps that offer real money gaming may not offer players credit via in-app purchases. Also, all gambling games must be free. From the new Guidelines:

iOS 7 Anfang September als Golden Master?
Berichten folgend soll iOS 7 Anfang September bereits als Golden Master an Apple-Mitarbeiter ausgeteilt werden, genauer am 5. September. Zum iPhone-Event am 10. September sollen dann Entwickler die GM erhalten. Eine ungenannte Quelle wird von BGR angeführt, die die nächsten Termine für den Release von iOS 7 voraussagt. Am 5.9.2013 sollen Mitarbeiter und Apple-Partner mit der Golden Master ausgestattet werden, 5 Tage später, am Tag des Apple-Events sollen auch Entwickler die GM dann erhalten. Schon in der kommenden Woche wird zudem die Veröffentlichung der Beta 6 von iOS 7 erwartet, nachdem vergangene Woche erst die Beta 5 veröffentlicht worden war.

iOS 7 Beta 6 Arriving Next Week as Final Seed Before Golden Master?
BGR reports that its sources have laid out a rough timeline for the final developer seeds of iOS 7, unsurprisingly noting that Beta 6 should arrive sometime next week, roughly two weeks after the release of Beta 5. The report indicates that Beta 6 is planned to be the final developer release before Apple finalizes iOS 7 with a golden master build. That golden master is expected to be seeded to internal groups and carrier partners starting on September 5, with the full developer community receiving access on September 10 alongside Apple's iPhone media event.

Gartner: Erstmals mehr Smartphones als klassische Mobiltelefone verkauft
Gemäss neuen Zahlen von Gartner hat die ICT-Industrie im vergangenen Quartal erstmals in der Geschichte mehr Smartphones als klassische Mobiltelefone abgesetzt. Von den global 435.16 Millionen verkauften Mobiltelefonen waren 225.33 Millionen Stück Smartphones, wie die Analysten errechnet haben. Während die Mobiltelefon-Verkäufe im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 3.6 Prozent anstiegen, stieg der Smartphone-Absatz um 46.5 Prozent an. In allen Regionen der Welt hat der Absatz der Smartphones zugenommen. Während dieser Markt in Asien um 74.1 Prozent wuchs, wurden in Europa Wachstumsraten von 31.6 Prozent erreicht.
Weiterhin den grössten Smartphone-Absatz erzielte Samsung. Das Unternehmen setzte im zweiten Quartal 2013 71.38 Millionen Smartphones ab, was einem Wachstum von rund 56 Prozent entspricht. Damit kommt das Unternehmen auf einen Marktanteil von 31.7 Prozent.

Ist man in einer mit der iCloud kompatiblen App, können geöffnete Dokumente effizient in die oder aus der iCloud verschoben werden.
Klickt man neben dem Dokumenten-Titel am oberen Fenster-Rand auf das Dreieck, kann dort der entsprechende Menüpunkt für das Bewegen ausgewählt werden.
Bearbeitet man gerade ein lokal gespeichertes Dokument, erscheint der Menüpunkt In die iCloud bewegen…. Das Auswählen dieses Menüpunktes verschiebt das Dokument, wie es der Titel bereits treffend beschreibt, in die iCloud. Dateien, die so in die iCloud «verfrachtet» werden, werden vom bisherigen Speicherort auf dem lokalen oder externen Volumen gelöscht und nur noch in der iCloud abgelegt — dies damit es keine Duplikate gibt.

Report: Roku is a more popular streaming device than the Apple TV
The research firm of Parks Associates recently surveyed 10,000 U.S. households with broadband connections and found that of all the households who use streaming set top boxes, 37% use Roku devices while only 24% use Apple TV. The survey was conducted during the first three months of 2013.
Is Apple's beloved hobby losing its mojo?
Not necessarily.
Recall a recent research study from Frost & Sullivan which found that more than half (56% to be exact) of all streaming devices sold in the U.S. during 2012 were Apple TVs. Trailing far behind was Roku with a 21.5% share.

AAPL übersteigt Schwelle von 500 US-Dollar
Nach der Bekanntmachung des US-Investors Carl Icahn, über eine Milliarde US-Dollar in Apple investiert zu haben, stiegt der Kurs der Apple-Aktie an der New Yorker Börse kräftig an. Erstmals seit dem Januar stieg der Aktienkurs kurzzeitig wieder über die Marke von 500 US-Dollar. Zeitweise notierte die Aktie gestern bei über 504 US-Dollar. Im Handelsverlauf verkauften einige Anleger wieder Apple-Aktien und am gestrigen Handelsschluss notierte das Papier bei 498.50 US-Dollar. Im nachbörslichen Handel kostet das Wertpapier im Moment 496 US-Dollar.

Apple aktualisiert «iCloud.com Beta» mit iOS-7-Design
Zwei Monate nach der Vorstellung von iOS 7 hat Apple die Beta-Version von iCloud.com, welche registrierten Entwicklern vorbehalten ist, mit dem iOS-7-Design aktualisiert. Damit hält die flache, vollständig überarbeitete Benutzeroberfläche auch bei Apples Web-Apps Einzug.
Anstelle des dunkelgrauen Leinen-Hintergrundes kommt nun ein leichter wirkender, mit Punkten versehener (Bokeh) hellerer Hintergrund zum Einsatz. Dieser bewegt sich, wenn man den Cursor über den Bildschirm bewegt (Parallax). Während die Icons für Mail, Kontakte, Kalender, Notizen, Erinnerungen und «Mein iPhone suchen» dem Design von iOS 7 angepasst worden sind, wurden die Icons der iWork-Apps (Pages, Numbers und Keynote) nicht verändert.

Schweiz: Schulleiter attackieren Apple
In einem Bericht der Handelszeitung kritisieren Vertreter des «Verbands der Schulleiterinnen und Schulleiter Schweiz (VSLCH)» die von Apple angebotenen Weiterbildungsprogramme im IT-Bereich scharf. Besonders kritisiert wird der Umstand, dass Apple — wie auch andere Unternehmen — mit kostenlosen Kursen und Diplomen die Lehrer an sich binden wollen. Befürchtet wird dabei ein schleichender Verlust der Unabhängigkeit bei der Auswahl der eingesetzten Materialien.
Apple scheint besonders daran interessiert zu sein, den Bildungsmarkt zu bearbeiten. Das Unternehmen führt nicht nur Kurse im Inland, sondern auch im Ausland durch. University of Washington harnesses RF and TV waves for battery-free wireless devices (video)
The problem with power is that, eventually, it runs out. To help cope with this inevitability, scientists at the University of Washington have developed prototype "ambient backscatter" devices that can passively harness the juice in radio and TV waves. Because they don't generate their own signal, these devices can get by on the juice they siphon from the air -- communicating by absorbing or reflecting binary information from existing signals, instead. Google Fiber has Vudu integration on its set-top boxes, Android app

CNN takes a closer look at Apple e-book Judge Denise Cote
Before Apple was found guilty of colluding with publishing companies to raise the price of e-books, U.S. District Judge Denise Cote raised a few eyebrows when she issued a statement which seemed to indicate that she was already convinced of Apple's culpability.
In late May, about two weeks before trial, Cote said the following:

14% of Households Use Streaming Media Devices, Roku More Popular Than Apple TV [iOS Blog]
Streaming media device use has doubled since 2011, with 14% of U.S. broadband households using products like the Apple TV or the Roku in 2013, reports Parks Associates (via CNET). While the Apple TV has increased in popularity over the last several years, it falls short of competing product Roku. Google's lawyers: If you use Gmail you have no expectation of privacy
While we know none of our readers would ever use email for nefarious purposes, the privacy of one's personal information is a hot topic thanks to the recent revelations about the NSA's domestic spying program. Well, there's bad news for privacy minded Gmail fans: Google's official legal stance is that you have no expectation of privacy when using their service.
