Dear wannabe Bitcoin miners: If it seems to good to be true, it's probably 4Chan

The allure of Bitcoin is understandable. In the past the digital currency's pice has fluctuated wildly, growing in value at an incredible rate. What does a Bitcoin currently cost? It changes by the hour. And outside of buying them at market rates the only way to get Bitcoins is a complicated mining process. As with any gold rush there are always suckers to be found, and the pranksters at 4chan are always ready to mess with them. Today the denizens of 4chan's infamous /b/ board, an anarchist playground for horrific images and incredibly cruel jokes, released the image you see above. It purports to tell users how to unlock a secret Bitcoin mining program in the Mac OS. Instead it directs them to delete essential files on their computer,

Daily iPhone App: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is just as fantastic as you remember

Oftentimes, older video games are looked upon with rose-colored glasses thanks to the magic, memory-altering powers of nostalgia. I was a bit worried that today's release of the PlayStation 2 classic Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas -- which, upon its release in 2004, quickly became one of the most popular games of all time -- wouldn't be quite as fantastic as history would have us believe. Fortunately, that's not at all the case. Like the rest of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, San Andreas is set in a fictional region modeled heavily after real-life counterparts. In this case, you'll be exploring various cities and suburbs drawn from the cultural memory of early '90s Southern California and Las Vegas. The story is long and winding, touchin

IFTTT adds a location channel to its iOS App

IFTTT updated its iOS app today adding in a major new feature -- the ability to use location as a trigger in your recipes. Version 1.3 of IFTTT adds a new iOS location channel that you can use in any recipe. This location feature allows you to setup a geographic fence that'll trigger an action when you enter an area, exit an area or do both. Besides a stand-alone channel, Location is also pre-built into existing channels like Instagram, Facebook, Foursquare or Twitter. This allows you to send out a message when you take a new Instagram photo in a particular area, for example. The updated version of IFTTT is available now in the iOS App Store.

In the most recent update to Apple's ongoing legal battles, a court in South Korea this week dismissed Samsung's claims that accused Apple products infringed upon Samsung-owned patents. Instantly, about 300 millionaires, some 40 of which are Apple employees and investors, are created. That is more millionaires than any company in history had produced at that time. Trailer: Edge of Tomorrow (Video)

Enterprise mobility well established in A/NZ: Good Technology

President Lincoln makes cameo in Apple Samsung court battle

The wisdom of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the U.S., made a perhaps long-overdue appearance in the high-stakes patent infringement battle between Apple and Samsung.U.S. District Court Judge Paul Grewal implored lawyers representing each company to take heed of Lincoln's words and find middle ground on some of the issues they spend hours arguing about in front of the court."Before he spoke of houses divided, proclaimed emancipation and saved our union, Abraham Lincoln was just another trial lawyer in the woods of Illinois. A decade before he was elected president, Lincoln wrote to his fellow lawyers: 'Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker, the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough,'" Grewal wrote in an order issued Wednesday to set the date and time for a meeting T

Apple provides detailed listing of Samsung's misconduct during the discovery process

Apple last week filed a motion seeking to recoup US$15.7 million out of the approximately $60 million it incurred in legal fees during its first trial against Samsung. In its brief detailing all of the legal work that went into litigating the case, Apple writes that its legal fees were "multiplied" on account of Samsung's own conduct during the discovery process. As a direct result of Samsung's behavior, the brief reads, Apple's legal team was forced to "file multiple motions to compel, including motions seeking production of copying documents, source code and financial information." Apple also points out that because Samsung initially failed to make key executives available for deposition, Apple was forced to send its attorneys back to "Korea at considerable expense." On account of Samsung's intransigence during the discovery process, the tech giant was slapp

Facebook enables auto-playing News Feed videos in iOS app

Facebook has updated its iOS app with a new "feature" that auto-plays videos in a user's News Feed. With the just-released Facebook version 6.8 for iOS, any time a user scrolls through their News Feed and comes upon a video, it will auto-play instead of only playing when the user has tapped on it. The auto-play feature works on both friend's video and video ads. The new feature is something that could easily annoy many users. However, Facebook was smart enough to mute audio in the auto-playing videos by default. In order to hear the audio the user must still tap on the playing video. It also makes it more likely that people might actually stop and watch that video clip of your dancing dog instead of scroll righ

Geofencing to Unlock Vehicle Functions Detailed in New Apple Patent Application

In November, Apple filed a new patent application [PDF] with the European Patent Office describing a system using an in-car accessory with an iOS device to set up geofences to activate various vehicle functions as a user approaches a vehicle. According to the 15-claim application, which specifically describes "Accessory control with geo-fencing", the accessory (which may or may not be built-in to the car itself) would transmit a signal to a linked mobile device, allowing the device to monitor the location of a vehicle. When the mobile device (and the user) are close enough to the car, the mobile device would transmit a second signal to the accessory within the car, allowing it to trigger functions like door unlocking, defrosting, heating, trunk opening, seat warming, and more.
