Allianz für Mobilfunk-Chips in den Startlöchern
Bei Entwicklung und Verkauf von Halbleiter-Produkten für mobile Kommunikationsgeräte wollen die Unternehmen Fujitsu, NEC, Panasonic und Samsung zusammen mit dem japanischen Mobilfunk-Anbieter NTT DOCOMO künftig gemeinsame Wege gehen. Dropbox 'experimenting' with photo and video import, enables instant transfer to the cloud
Dropbox is handing out yet another early peek at a fresh new tool for the early-adopting enthusiast crowd. The cloud-based storage service is introducing a feature that'll allow all your photo / video captured memories to be instantly transferred as soon as you plug in a device that houses your media, and you can have a raw look at the "experimental build" now. Samsung hopes to boost phone sales 15% in 2012
Samsung hopes to grow its entire cellphone base by 15 percent next year. Industry insiders reportedly talking to the Korea Economic Daily saw shipments growing from an estimated 325 million this year to 374 million in 2012. Most of that would come on the back of smartphone shipments, which would amount to 150 million of that group.

Samsung, Sharp, Hitachi and others settle LCD panel price fixing consumer class action for $539 million
'Tis the season for settling antitrust lawsuits, folks. Earlier this month, Sharp, Samsung, Hitachi and other LCD panel producers settled out their price fixing lawsuit with direct purchasers (read: TV and computer monitor manufacturers) for $388 million. So the story goes, the companies colluded to assure higher prices on LCDs sold between 1999 and 2006. Transformers Blu-ray 3D comes home January 31st in Ultimate and Collector's editions
After a quickie Blu-ray dropped in the fall sans-extras, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is getting a full fledged release January 31st complete with 3D and four hours of bonus features. Briefly: FLOTE and Phinglet launched through Kickstarter
FLOTE, an ergonomic floor stand designed for the iPad, has been launched as a new Kickstarter project. The machined-metal floor stand can hold an iPad, as well as most other popular tablets, in a comfortable position for prolonged use. The need to adjust any knobs or screws has also been removed, allowing users to quickly position their mobile device in any position. Lincoln Road Apple Store spurs political controversy
A political row has surfaced over plans to build a larger Lincoln Road Apple Store in Miami Beach, Florida, notes the Miami Herald. Airtight brings Apple's AirPlay to Google TV
App developer Airtight has just released an Android app ($0.99, Android Market) that lets Google TV hardware devices use AirPlay to stream movies and photos from iPhones, iPod touch, and iPad devices to their HDTVs. The currently beta-stage app lets a Logitech Revue or Sony device get some of the features that would normally need an Apple TV. Some features aren't yet supported, including AirPlay mirroring, music, and the streaming of copy-protected movies.

News: Apple to launch all-new iPhone in fall 2012
Apple is set to launch a completely redesigned iPhone model in the fall of next year, according to a new report. Ex-Microsofter: Windows Phone alienates both carriers, OEMs
Former Microsoft staffer and now wider mobile app developer Charlie Kindel has dissected Windows Phone 7's current failure in the market. He blamed it on Microsoft's semi-open strategy antagonizing both carriers and hardware designers it needs to promote its hardware. Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me nix the window shadows in Lion
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I recently added a second external monitor to my 13" MacBook Pro. My problem comes with the OS X Lion features that give windows a 3D depth-look, specifically, the shadow effect.
As a window on the external monitor approaches the virtual border of the built-in LCD of the MBP, the shadow extends between monitors, creating a shadow/shade over the windows on the LCD (that is to say, if you park a window to close to the edge, the shadow extends the other display).
Anyway to turn off the shadowed window effect?

AT&T wraps buyout of Qualcomm spectrum for 4G boost
AT&T on Tuesday formally completed its purchase of Qualcomm airwaves. The $1.9 billion deal gives it access to 700MHz frequencies it will use to boost the coverage for its LTE-based 4G network. The extra spectrum's reach is wide enough to cover nearly all of the US, at 300 million potential users.

Quad-core Meizu MX may arrive in May with revamped UI, says company founder
We already knew that the dual-core Meizu MX will eventually meet its quad-core variant, but the question is when? Well, the ever elusive Jack Wong (who's actually taken a step back from the CEO position while acting as some sort of chairman) told fans on his forum that the new Android phone will probably arrive around May next year -- almost half way through the current one-year product cycle. Additionally, the Flyme OS's UI will see some big changes to accommodate Android 4.0. iPhone 4S passes last hurdle to launching in mainland China
The People's Daily is reporting that an Apple device with the model number A1431 has received China's Compulsory Certification. This is the model number for the iPhone 4S that recently received a network entry permit, indicating that the phone has cleared the remaining hurdles before it can be sold in mainland China.
This positions Apple to release the iPhone 4S in the new year, most likely coinciding with Chinese New Year on Jan. 23.

Report sees next-gen iPhone in fall, using bumper-like bezel
The next-generation iPhone will ship in the fall, like the iPhone 4S, claims a "close source" for the Boy Genius Report. New iOS, Android device adds spiked 12-19X on Christmas
The ratio of new Android and iOS devices jumped well over ten times on Christmas weekend, Localytics found Tuesday. About 12.5 times more iOS devices were seen on the weekend. Much of the growth came from the iPod touch, where 21 times more were being tracked that weekend.

iPhone 4S expected in China by late January, report says
The iPhone 4S should ship to mainland China no later than the Chinese New Year on January 23rd, according to state-run newspaper the People's Daily. The phone is said to have won China Compulsory Certification on December 21st, clearing the last hurdle for sales by Apple and carrier China Unicom. The Daily specifically suggests that the 4S will ship "at the beginning of January 2012," and be on the market in time for the New Year holiday.

Study finds many iOS activations during the holidays
We all expected that iOS sales would be incredible during the holiday season, but now a study by Localytics reported on GigaOM shows that the activation level for new iOS devices was even greater than expected.

USPTO tosses some Oracle patent claims at Google request
The US Patent and Trademark Office gave Google a rare break late last week in further scaling back Oracle's limited patent claims in a lawsuit over Android's code. A total of 17 of the 21 claims of the patent were rejected, including one claim that Oracle had been leveling against Google. Oracle has until February 20 to challenge the rejection.

Thunderbolt PC motherboards on the way for Q2
DigiTimes reports that Intel plans to "fully release" Thunderbolt technology in April of 2012, and that many "top-tier PC vendors" are readying Thunderbolt-ready motherboards.
Apple has shipped Thunderbolt-compatible devices, including the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, iMac, the Thunderbolt cable and a Thunderbolt Display. DigiTimes reports that falling costs will allow the technology to proliferate across lower-end devices and machines.

Version 1.51 lässt sich über den PC, die PS3 oder die Vita selbst runterladen und verspricht Bugfixes in Sachen "game progress" unter anderem für das mitgelieferte Game "Dynasty Warriors: Next ". Die lassen sich aber auch ohne die neue Firmware beheben, wenn man das Spiel offline spielt.

Ein Umzug eines Macintosh geht einfach von statten: Mit der Sicherung des Home-Ordners haben Sie alle wichtigen Dokumente sofort wieder auf dem neuen Mac, und Programme können via dem Mac App Store geladen werden.
Zu den größten Ordnern des Home-Verzeichnises gehört, ohne Zweifel, die iPhoto-Bibliothek.
Das Sichern oder Verschieben der Bibliothek geht jedoch, anders als mit anderen, großen Dateien (Filme etc.), außergewöhnlich langsam vonstatten.

iPhoto speichert viele kleinere Dateien in verschiedenen Ordnern ab (Vorschau-Bilder, Original-Bilder, Änderungen…). All diese kleineren Dateien sind in einer tiefen Ordnerstruktur versteckt.

Visualized: IBM's 1956 HDD packs 5MB of storage, requires forklift for installation
Check out IBM's 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) hard disk and those gripes about dragging around that USB thumb drive soon evaporate. This 1956 HDD was composed of 50 24-inch discs, stacked together and taking up 16 sq ft of real estate. The once-cutting-edge monstrosity was capable of commanding an annual fee of $35,000 and stored up to 5MB of data. Sure, by modern standards it's a pretty modest capacity, but the RAMAC still weighed in at just shy of a ton. Our technological forefathers could have done with that exoskeleton prototype.

Spire brings Siri to all jailbroken iOS 5 devices
Two iOS hackers, Chpwn and Ryan Petrich, have released Spire, a new implementation of Siri for jailbroken iOS 5 devices. The code brings Siri to hardware other than the iPhone 4S, specifically the iPhone 4 and 3GS, the iPad 1, and third- and fourth-generation iPod touches. Chpwn claims that unlike a hack published earlier this month, there should be no copyright issues putting the legality of Spire in question.

Italy fines Apple $1.2m for 'bad' support guarantees
Italy's Antitrust Authority said it would fine Apple 900,000 euros, or about $1.2 million, after deciding that the company had conducted "bad commercial practices" with its support. The American firm had reportedly been "unclear" on payments for its extended AppleCare warranty, which earned about 500,000 euros ($650,000) of the fine. The remaining 400,000 euros were for not properly informing customers about how long the warranties would last.

Online shopping gets iPad surge on Christmas Day, iOS dominates in December
There's no rest for the weary in retail this year, but at least on Christmas Day most of the shopping frenzy was online and not in line. IBM's Smarter Commerce unit, which tracks 500 online stores (but not Amazon, the largest, and probably not Apple's store either) told the AP that Christmas Day online shopping increased by 16.4 percent year over year.

Kommt iPad 3 am 24. Februar – Steve Jobs Geburtstag?
Das iPad 3 dürfte das erste Release für Apple im neuen Jahr werden. Als Einführungstermin wird der 24. Februar 2012 und somit der Geburtstag von Steve Jobs gehandelt. Eine besondere Art der Huldigung für den verstorbenen Apple Mitbegründer oder doch eher nur „Zufall“?
Sollte das iPad 3 wirklich ab dem 24. Februar verfügbar sein, dürfte es sich wohl eher um ein zufälliges Datum handeln. Denn schon seit Wochen kursieren Gerüchte, wonach das neue iPad Ende Februar Anfang März erwartet wird. Zudem handelt es sich bei diesem Datum um einen Freitag, einem Tag, an dem Apple mit Vorliebe neue Produkte in den Handel bringt. Demnach kein unübliches Datum, zumal in 2011 an Jobs Geburtstag die neuen Thunderbolt MacBook Pro eingeführt wurden.

It's just a few weeks since pod2g revealed his untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 and -- boom -- all of a sudden it's up for the DL. The exploit has been incorporated into redsn0w 0.9.10, the Pwnage Tool and Chronic Devteam's Cydia package, and it works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (including the CDMA version), iPad1, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 4G, so long as they've been updated to iOS 5.0.1. NTT Docomo, Panasonic, Samsung und mehr wollen eigene Smartphonechips basteln

Basteln ist ein wenig untertrieben, denn schon allein NTT Docomo gibt 5,8 Millionen Dollar für das neue Joint Venture aus, bei dem u.a. auch noch NEC und Fujitsu dabei sind. Leaks: RIM co-CEOs too controlling of board
RIM's current struggles may have been spurred on by excessive co-CEO control of the board of directors. New insights from the Wall Street Journal suggest that the two CEOs, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, actively prevent other executives from learning what goes on in board meetings or otherwise influencing the final outcome. Balsillie reportedly has a "forceful presence" in meetings that dictates the agenda, while Lazaridis mostly presents device plans.

Samsung, Panasonic, NTT DoCoMo may team on smartphone chips
Samsung, Panasonic, NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu, and NEC are working together on smartphone processors, according to apparent slips from the industry early Tuesday. A joint venture as cast by the Wall Street Journal would probably have Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo have majority control over the project, which would go live by late March. Little else is known other than that official news could come as soon as later on Tuesday.

iPad 3 home buttons tip slight change, production close
A part leak late Monday may have given some of the first tangible clues to hardware differences in the iPad 3. The examples spotted by 9to5 would show the familiar button layout but slight cosmetic changes to the minimalist icon as well as a significantly smaller backside layout. It suggests either that space is tight or that Apple had simply found a way to streamline the design without compromising its quality.

T-Platforms to build ten petaflop supercomputer for Moscow State University
In post-Soviet Russia, massive supercomputer programs you. (Sorry, we had to.) Recently, Russia's Moscow State University contracted with high-performance computing company T-Platforms to create a ten petaflop cluster that'll be operational in 2013.
