Boxee Mac media player reaches end-of-life with new version

The Boxee project has come a long way from its humble origins as a fork of the Xbox Media Center, bringing easy video playback and a couch-to-screen UI to the Mac, then later to Windows and Ubuntu, and now to the company's own dedicated Boxee Box hardware (soon to support live broadcast TV). There's a solid ecosystem of app developers making themselves at home with Boxee. The company is releasing version 1.5 of its desktop app for Mac, Windows and Ubuntu this week, featuring many of the improvements that will be appearing in the Boxee Box firmware early next year, but there's a caveat. This will be the final release of Boxee's desktop build; future development efforts will be focused on the Boxee Box hardware and on tablets

MESM Soviet computer project marks 60 years

Before you go complaining about your job, take a moment to remember the MESM project, which just marked the 60th anniversary of its formal recognition by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. The project, headed by Institute of Electrical Engineering director Sergey Lebedev, was born in a laboratory built from scratch amongst the post-World War II ruins of Ukrainian capital city, Kyiv, by a team of 20 people, many of whom took up residence above the lab. Work on MESM -- that's from the Russian for Small Electronic Calculating Machine -- began toward the end of 1948. By November 1950, the computer was running its first program. As you can tell from our quiet start this morning, it's a slow day around the TUAW HQ -- most of us are still in the holiday mood, and with much of the United States off work today anyway, things aren't too crazy. But we're still here, and while some of us are buried under snow, we can still at least remember that somewhere on Earth, there are sunny skies and tropical breezes. In fact, you can see both in the video posted below, which was shot by a band called Passion Pit, completely on an iPad 2 and an iPhone 4. WindowBreak Project seeks universal developer unlock tool for Windows Phone (video)

The developer known as Jaxbot is becoming quite familiar around these parts, who's known for bringing instant app resuming and multitasking to Windows Phone -- long before these features had gone mainstream. Daily iPad app: OneNote for the iPad

After years of developing mobile tools for its own platform, Microsoft has finally released a series of apps for the iPad including Lync, OneNote and Kinectimals. Hands down, the most anticipated of the bunch is OneNote, Microsoft's popular desktop app for taking and organizing notes. It's the premier solution for the desktop, but, unfortunately, it falls short on the Apple tablet. The app pulls OneNote documents down from SkyDrive and lets you both view and edit the documents on your iPad. Unfortunately, most of the document formatting is not available on the iPad. Apple launches full iTunes Match website, FAQ, video

Apple's iTunes Match, an add-on service that makes most users' entire iTunes music library available to their other devices for an annual $25 fee, now has its own dedicated website that includes a walk-through video, setup guide, product description and Frequently Asked Questions column. Smart ForTwo EV gets delayed until September, 'unspecified problems' to blame

Bad news for those of you waiting on that updated Smart EV. The faster and longer-lasting third generation city-dweller previously scheduled for delivery in "early 2012," has just been delayed until September. According to Daimler, the culprit is "unspecified problems" at battery cell provider, Li-Tec. But before jumping to explosive conclusions, the auto maker quips there aren't any "technical or quality problems with the batteries." Curious, yet also a bummer, as frankly, a $22,000 EV with 87 miles of range couldn't come soon enough.

Foxconn to double size of iPhone factory in Zhengzhou

Although the Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou (the capital of the inland Henan province) was only opened earlier this year, company officials in coordination with government authorities are planning a massive $1.1 billion expansion that would double the manufacturing output, according to a report from China Daily. The expansion would increase daily production of iPhones to 400,000 and would be the world's largest such facility when completed.

Intel Centerton-based Atoms to focus on NAS as netbooks fade

New details have emerged of a shift in Intel's Atom strategy as it backs off of netbooks. The previously hinted-at Centerton platform is now said by Digitimes to be refocused on network-attached storage (NAS) hubs for the home and basic servers. Seiko Epson marks Boxing Day by announcing Nokia lawsuit settlement, 'extraordinary loss'

With Christmas behind us, it's time to get back to the real world. For Seiko Epson, that means some serious downer news. The company announced today that it has finally opted to settle with Nokia over antitrust lawsuits filed in the US and UK. The company will pay the Finnish handset maker a cool $80 million over the lawsuit, which stems from issues with LCD supply. That sum that will result in an "extraordinary loss" for Q3, according to Epson, though the company has opted not to adjust full-year earnings forecasts. Check Epson's press release after the break.

iPad Mini: Kein 7-Zoll Tablet 2012

Seiko Epson pays $80m to Nokia for alleged LCD price fixing

Seiko Epson stated Monday that it was paying Nokia $80 million to settle its part of a Nokia lawsuit over price fixing for cellphone LCDs. Although Seiko Epson still denied that it colluded with others on artificially hiking LCD prices, it decided to pay $80 million rather than risk a product ban. Nokia wasn't requiring an admission of liability in return for dropping the lawsuits, but Seiko Epson argued that it was being pressed into a payment it wasn't ready to make.

Sony sells its stake in Samsung LCD team-up for $939 million

Sony and Samsung have decided to part ways on their seven-year-old LCD venture. Possibly due to Sony's recent struggles in the increasingly competitive world of TV division, Samsung will buy up its 50 percent share for around $939 million. Jarnos Smeets, a mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, has been plugging away on his Human Birdwings project for many, many months now, and his latest breakthroughs are absolutely worthy of a peek. LG's 55-inch 'world's largest' OLED HDTV panel is official, coming to CES 2012

We only have a few more days left until the festivities truly kick off at CES 2012 in Las Vegas, but LG has already tipped its hand with a press release promising the "world's largest" OLED panel for the show. We've seen smaller screens from LG before and it had already promised a 55-inch OLED HDTV for mid-2012, so this news is just another sign the company is ready to take its technology mainstream.
