Daily iPad App: LostWinds
I really enjoyed LostWinds when it came out on the Wii a couple of years ago -- it's a physics-based platformer, essentially, but the twist is that you don't just control a really beautifully rendered little kid named Toku wandering around a very artistic world, you also control the wind spirit that can push him and various objects in the environment around. On the Wii, this was accomplished with an on-screen cursor and a swing of the Wii remote, but on the iPad and iPhone, it's accomplished with a swipe across the screen.
As a result, this version seems less tactile and a little less control-intensive, which I'm not convinced is necessarily a negative, just different. On the Wii version, for example, you could move the joystick and

Studie: Apple verzeichnet mit dem App Store höhere Einnahmen als Google
Die Marktforscher von Distimo haben nun die verschiedenen App Stores genauer unter die Lupe genommen und festgestellt, dass Apple mit seinem Angebot rund viermal so viel Einnahmen verzeichnen kann wie der stärkste Konkurrent Google mit dem Android Market. Dabei verglichen die Amerikaner die 200 teuersten Applikationen in den jeweiligen App Stores der verschiedenen Anbieter untereinander.
Demnach kann Apple trotz des hohen Zuwachses an Apps im Google Android Market deutlich mehr Einnahmen mit seinen Angeboten generieren. Selbst mit dem App Store für das iPad ist der Umsatz in etwa doppelt so hoch wie der des Google Android Market. FCC approves first white space device and database for Wilmington, NC
The FCC has approved the first device to use the much buzzed about "white spaces" between television broadcast frequencies to transmit data. The recipient of the honor is a receiver from Koos Technical Services that's designed to be a last-mile connection for surveillance cameras and telemetry systems. The radio will tap into database run by Spectrum Bridge to ensure it doesn't interfere with other broadcasts. HTC counters IPCom, blocks attempts to sue German shops
IPCom's attempts to sue HTC's store partners to block sales may have been thwarted as a German court has reportedly put in place a preliminary ban on the threats. The 3G patent holder was said by HTC attorneys to be momentarily blocked from trying to sue any retailer that carries the phones. The gesture would effectively clear HTC to stay in the German market until the ban was lifted.

Amazon stops blocking rival e-reading apps on Kindle Fire
People just keep digging up interesting little tidbits in the latest Fire firware update. RIM claims BlackBerry 10 rumors 'inaccurate and uninformed'
RIM responded to claims that BlackBerry 10 was far too unfinished with an outright rejection. It called the rumor "inaccurate and uninformed" and insisted on its official position, which was a need to wait on a new chip that could give it dual-core and LTE 4G. There was no alternate explanation, RIM suggested.

Wahoo Fitness intros first BT heart rate monitor, Blue HR
Wahoo Fitness has revealed some early details on its Blue HR smart heart rate monitor that pairs to smartphones using Bluetooth. It will officially be unveiled at CES, and will pair with Bluetooth smartphones and works natively with the iPhone 4S and its Bluetooth 4.0 support. Eine schöne Nachricht kurz vor Weihnachten: Die GTA-Reihe schafft es endlich auch in den deutschen Mac App Store!
Seit August bereits im US-Store, kommen die Titel Grand Theft Auto III und Grand Theft Auto: Vice City nun auch endlich auf deutsche Macs.
Beide Titel können nun für 11,99 € gekauft und herunter geladen werden.
Grand Theft Auto III schlägt dabei mit knapp 700 MB zu Buche, der Nachfolger Vice City beansprucht 1,25 GB Festplattenspeicher. Vermissen werden Sie noch GTA – San Andreas. Dieser Teil der Reihe ist noch nicht erhätlich.

Jacob Goldmann, Gründer von Xerox PARC, stirbt im Alter von 90 Jahren

Cowon Plenue Z2 PMP scurries into the FCC's database, hides its face from the authorities
See that? That's the backside of a new portable media player from a company know best for its legendary sound quality. Unfortunately, there's no extra information to be gleaned from Cowon's Plenue Z2 FCC filing, but it certainly appears as if this will be one of the company's larger players. We're still waiting on pins and needles to hear if Android or its own OS will be running the show, but now that it's hopped this hurdle, we doubt it'll be too many more weeks before the whole thing is revealed all proper like. iPhone share rises in US, UK, Australia; falls on European continent
Sometimes it seems like just about everyone in the US has an iPhone. A report by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech that was highlighted by Reuters today shows that the iPhone's share of the US smartphone market jumped from 25 percent during the run-up to Christmas last year to 36 percent during the same period this year.

Briefly: Unity 3.5 open beta, Aspyr holiday discounts
Unity Technologies has announced the launch of the Unity 3.5 open beta including a developer preview for the Adobe Flash Player deployment add-on. Alongside the beta release, the company is running a Flash platform game development contest where contestants can enter a Unity-based Flash title for the chance to win $20,000. Final games must be submitted by January 5 and the best entry will be awarded the grand prize. Numerous other prizes have also been organized for the runners-up.

iMessage flaw continues pushing messages to stolen iPhones
A flaw in iMessage has been allowing stolen iPhones to continue receiving and sending messages for their original owners, even after a remote wipe, reports note. Although iMessage is also nominally associated with a person's Apple ID, changing a linked password and/or email address may have no effect. It's believed that iMessage may be pulling old phone numbers from a cache, and using that data to manage messages. Switching a SIM card to a new iPhone may in fact take iMessage traffic with it.

Xerox PARC founder Jacob Goldman dies at 90
Jacob Goldman, Xeroxís chief scientist behind the creation of the company's renowned Xerox Palo Alto Technology Center (Xerox PARC) died on Tuesday. Dr. Park was 90. Among the many technologies Xerox Park gave to the world was the modern concept of a PC with a graphical user interface, which first reached the market with the Lisa and later the original Mac.

Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center founder Jacob Goldman passes away at age 90
Jacob Goldman, the man who helped found the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) as Xerox's chief scientist in 1970, has passed away at age 90. PARC holds a special place in gadget lore, as it was responsible for creating Alto, the first modern computer with a GUI and a mouse, the first WYSIWYG text editor, and Ethernet, among many other innovations. Prior to his time at Xerox, Dr. Goldman was the head of R&D at Ford Motor Company, and after retiring, he served on the boards of several companies, including Xerox. Verizon FiOS TV's new media server scheduled for late 2012
The fine folks at Verizon's Innovation Labs in Waltham, Massachusetts have posted a couple of videos of their efforts that include their vision of how Verizon plans to deliver TV to all the devices in your home, over both wired and wireless networks in HD, served off of a centralized media server. Sprint gives early upgrades to Premiere members
A sighting gave away clues that Sprint has been quietly rewarding loyal customers with early upgrades. Some Premier subscribers are being given a "targeted" offer that lets them get upgrade pricing early if they exercise the option before the end of 2011, SprintFeed said. Shocker! Tablet ad requests up 700 percent during 2011
Good news: all those new tablets you see reported on these pages aren't being stolen by elves; they're entering the human population at large and -- most Christmassy of all -- they're displaying ads. Google told TechCrunch that its AdMob platform saw eight billion ad requests from tablets during the month of November, compared to one lonely billion back in December 2010. Total AdMob requests amount to roughly three billion per day, however, so tablet advertising is still sugary froth compared to that on smartphones.

Sonos 3.6 update pulls Windows Media DRM, boosts Spotify
Sonos has quietly put out an update for its Play and Bridge devices last week that unusually strips out features. The 3.6 update pulls support for copy-protected Windows Media files, leaving Zune Pass users and those still tied to mostly inactive PlaysForSure DRM stores without a way to stream their music to Sonos boxes. The company hasn't given an explanation for the switch but has been asked for a comment.

Preliminary assessment: Apple unlikely to secure Galaxy Tab 10.1N ban in Germany
A preliminary assessment in a German court this week suggests that Apple probably won't secure a ban of the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1N in that country. The court believes that the recently-redesigned Tab 10.1N has "moved away sufficiently from the legally protected design," said Judge Johanna Brueckner-Hofmann. Note that this is a preliminary statement and that ruling is scheduled for February 9, 2012.
You'll remember that Samsung redesigned the Galaxy Tablet 10.1 after the court ruled in Apple's favor. The 10.1N features an altered bezel design and relocated speaker, and is an attempt by Samsung to get around Apple's assertion that the Galaxy Tab design is just too close to that of the iPad. iMAME: Arcade Emulator im Apple App Store

Überraschung. Da hat es doch mal wieder ein Arcade-Emulator in den iTunes Store geschafft. Normalerweise sind sie bei Apple mit Emulatoren ja eher biestig. Also hoffen wir mal, dass es zumindest so lange übersehen und im Shop bleibt, bis ihr es alle habt. Für iPhone und iPad, selbstverständlich. Was an Spielen mitgeliefert wird ist eher lausig, aber dafür ist ein Emulator ja auch nicht zuständig und ROMs finden ist wirklich nicht so schwer. Also. Los.

Ein Macintosh ist schon etwas Feines! All die kleinen Details machen einem das Leben unter OS X umsoviel schöner und leichter.

Du hast doch einen Mac. Da ist doch alles immer so viel besser. Dann kannst du sicher auch leichter all meine Unterlagen drucken als ich es mit Windows kann.

UMG v. Veoh: victory has never been so pyrrhic
The US appeal court has ruled that "YouTube on steroids" site Veoh can't be sued for copyright infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Telekom führt Nachkaufoption für Daten ein
Jeder, der sein Smartphone mit einem Tarif der Telekom nutzt, kennt die SMS, die einem mitteilt, man habe sein monatliches Datenvolumen verbraucht und surfe nun mit “reduzierter Geschwindigkeit”. RDIO startet in Deutschland am 12. Januar

Endlich kommt Schwung in die Musikabo-Dienste in Deutschland. Das von den Skype-Machern Janus Friss und Niklas Zennström gegründete Rdio kann sich zwar mittlerweile schon mit Konkurrenz in Deutschland anfreunden, und auch Branchen-Primus Spotify steht in den Startlöchern, aber uns ist natürlich jede Belebung, die nicht zuletzt durch die letztlich veränderten GEMA-Tarife zustande kommen, recht. A man who helped make our world smaller died last week. As noted in the New York Times obituary linked below, Norman Krim didn't invent the transistor, but he was a driving force behind its use, having persuaded his employer, Raytheon, to manufacture them on a large scale. They were designed for use in hearings aids initially but, as IEEE Spectrum's Harry Goldstein explains, some later batches proved too "noisy" for that purpose and wound up in the hands of hobbyists instead, who used them in a variety of electronic projects. Citi: 27% watch shows on Netflix, 8% watch iTunes
A new Citi Investment Research study from analyst Mike Mahaney points to Netflix still increasing its share of Internet movie and TV viewing. Tablets vor Gericht: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1N bleibt

Am Düsseldorfer Landgericht hat man jetzt entschieden, die paar marginalen Änderungen am Galaxy Tab 10.1N reichen und Johanna Brückner-Hofman lobt, den breiteren Rahmen und das Logo als "etwas, das sofort ins Auge fällt" und fügt schmunzeln hinzu, dass Apple und Samsung "bekannter als die Bundeskanzlerin" sind. Am 9. Februar soll das Urteil dann verkündet werden. Klar, der Apple Anwalt beschwert sich. German court's preliminary ruling says Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1N isn't aping the iPad
Round a few corners, a bit of nip-tuck and a tossed-on N. Oh, and probably just being sick and tired of the whole ordeal. We're assuming that's the recipe for getting the Cupertino-sourced gorilla off of Samsung's back, as a judge at the district court in Düsseldorf, Germany just issued a preliminary ruling that effectively clears the Galaxy Tab 10.1N from claims that it too mimics the iconic iPad. Steve Jobs statue unveiled in Budapest
Tech Crunch reports that a life-size statue of Steve Jobs has been unveiled in Budapest, Hungary. The statue captures Jobs with an iPhone in one hand and gesturing with the other as he strides across an imaginary keynote stage. It was commissioned by Gabor Bojar, the founder and chairman of Hungarian software development house Graphisoft.
The bronze statue was sculpted by Hungarian sculptor Erno Toth and stands near the entrance to Graphisoft's headquarters. Bojar commissioned the statue as a tribute to Jobs, who helped the architectural software firm when it was starting up in the early 80s. Steve Jobs awarded posthumous special Grammy
Steve Jobs has been awarded a posthumous Grammy by the Recording Academy. On Wednesday the group announced the winners of its 2012 Special Merit Awards, including musician Dave Bartholomew, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder and Steve Jobs.
Jobs, Bartholomew and Van Gelder were awarded the Trustees Award, which recognizes "outstanding contributions to the industry in a nonperforming capacity." The Recording Academy will hold a special ceremony for the Merit Awards recipients on Feb. 11, 2012. They'll also be recognized during Grammy Awards telecast on Feb. 12.

EFF takes the fight to Carrier IQ, requests reinforcements
If we didn't love the EFF already, we'd be proposing marriage now that it's managed to reverse-engineer Carrier IQ's pernicious monitoring software. CIQ exists in phones in three parts, the app itself, a configuration file and a database -- where your keystrokes and coded "metrics" are logged before being sent to the company. When I first talked to Netherrealm Studios' Ed Boon about Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, I told him it was very "Infinity Blade-esque," and even he readily agreed. The game is an iOS version of Batman: Arkham City, which liberally borrows assets from the console title (including graphics, models, and audio), and gameplay from Infinity Blade.
The game has you fighting various enemies with swipe attacks and various tapping motions in one-on-one combat. But while Infinity Blade is a well-cooked steak of a game, requiring finesse and care, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is much more like fast food -- it's quick, relatively cheap and less refined.

Kantar: iPhone share surges in US, UK, down in most Europe
The iPhone made dramatic share gains in the fall, but only in some countries, Kantar Worldpanel found Thursday. In the more recently Android-friendly US, Apple's share of smartphones between September and November was up from 25 percent a year earlier to 36 percent. AMD on Thursday retook the top spot for single-card graphics speed through the Radeon HD 7970. The video card is the first anywhere to use a 28 nanometer chipmaking process and uses this to pack 2,048 cores, or a third more than the Radeon HD 6970 it's replacing. Google posts tools it uses to administrate Macs
A Google administrator, Clay Caviness, who works with the search giant's internal "Macintosh Operations" team, has announced that the company will be releasing a range of tools that it uses to manage its Mac machines. The company has added a "macops" page on its project hosting site, where the utilities and scripts will be posted in the future.

Adobe adds EchoSign signing app to iOS
EchoSign, which was acquired by Adobe this summer, has now produced an iOS version of its technology. The app, called Adobe EchoSign, lets users with an EchoSign account get documents digitally "signed" using an eSignature either in person or through other digital communication, manage documents and view stored signed agreements. Signer can either draw their signature using a stylus or invoke a typed, authenticated eSignature.

MAME comes to iOS with iMAME emulator
An app that uses Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) technology has appeared on the App Store for iOS devices. Called iMAME, the free emulator includes nine generic games and features a touch-based bottom half that offers both joystick and an ABXY button configuration. The port, which was previous available only for jailbroken iOS devices through unofficial distribution channels, is not officially endorsed.

Hasbro sues ASUS for 'stealing' Transformer Prime name
Hasbro late last week sued ASUS for allegedly violating its trademarks with the Transformer Prime. The toy designer claims ASUS is too close to blending the Transformers and Optimus Prime names. In a statement, Hasbro asserted that ASUS was effectively banking on association with the legendary animated show, comics, and toys to sell the Transformer Prime.

Daily iPad App: Mini Motor Racing HD
Developer The Binary Mill has been trying a number of different approaches on iOS (including the Penny Arcade-approved Decide-o-Tron game recommendation app), but Mini Motor Racing HD is the company's most solid release yet, in my estimation. It's a top-down mini car-racing game with a pretty exceptional amount of polish. The controls are well-made, there's a lot of fun progression options for a number of different cars, and the cars themselves are really well-rendered, so much so that on the iPad especially they really do look like real little toys.
The game only has one option for multiplayer, you can only play with one other player, either

Rumors: CEA booted Microsoft from CES keynotes
Microsoft's decision to stop hosting CES keynotes may not have been voluntary, according to rumors. Multiple Microsoft staffers claimed to GigaOM that the Consumer Electronics Association, which hosts CES, had dropped Microsoft's presentation. The withdrawal from booth space was supposedly retaliation.

Massachusetts man puts 'icl0ud.com' domain up for bid
Hoping to cash in on the similarity to Apple's cloud-services suite, a North Attleboro man has put up the domain name icl0ud.com for auction on Ebay, asking a minimum bid of $7,000. The domain currently points to a generic business site called cloudstoragedrive.com that offers to help digitize, manage and secure files stored on a cloud storage system. The business is also for sale for the same asking price.
