Grand Theft Auto 3's Anniversary Edition arrives December 15
That anniversary edition of Grand Theft Auto 3 for iOS has been dated: You'll be able to rejoin the streets of Liberty City on your iPad and iPhone next week, on December 15. Rockstar will be releasing the game for both iOS and Android, and you can see a picture of the game's touchscreen controls above. It looks pretty good, but know that it will only be made to run well on "new generation" devices, so if you're still rocking a 3GS or an iPad 1, you might have a little slowdown.

Chinese court rejects Apple trademark lawsuit over iPad name
According to Reuters, a Chinese court in Shenzhen (home to the Foxconn factories where many Apple products are assembled) has rejected a trademark infringement suit Apple filed against Proview Technology over the iPad's name.
Proview has owned the Chinese rights to the iPad trademark since 2000. Apple bought global rights to the trademark long ago, but the deal apparently did not include trademark rights in China. Proview continues to hold trademark rights to th

Self-checkout at Apple Stores going well, source claims
The self-checkout system now in place at US Apple Stores is working out well, in spite of concerns, according to a CNBC source described as "familiar with Apple's retail operation." Called EasyPay, the technology lets users of the official Apple Store app scan some accessories and buy them without having to talk to an Apple clerk. Even prior to its launch it was worried that the system might provide a cloak for shoplifters.

Amazon gives iOS, Android users $5 to skip retail stores
Amazon has promised shoppers up to $5 in savings for using its Price Check app on December 10. The potential 5 percent savings applies on up to three qualifying items in the toy, electronics, sporting goods, music and DVD categories. The Price Check app is available for iOS (App Store) and Android (Market) devices and allows shoppers to compare prices while shopping in malls and stores.

Verizon may have web movie, TV service outside of FiOS areas
Verizon is planning its own rough equivalent to Netflix for those outside of its FiOS TV areas, insiders explained on Tuesday. Details weren't clear for Reuters' sources, but it would stream a subset of movies and TV for customers that didn't live in an area where its regular IPTV service was an option. It might go live sometime in 2012, but how much of a premium it would have, if any, wasn't apparent.

Global BBC iPlayer app will launch for iPhone, iPod touch on Thursday
Sadly, there's still no release date in sight for the global BBC iPlayer in the U.S., but those lucky countries that do have it will have it be expanded to the iPhone and iPod touch on Thursday.
The iPad app launched in 11 countries initially, and the number has expanded to 16 with our Canadian neighbors being the most-recent country to get the player. Apple has opened up two new job positions for Siri engineers, notes Silicon Alley Insider. The first is simply titled iOS Siri UI Engineer, and asks for someone capable of implementing the conservation view and related actions. Report suggests Apple had best November ever
If you think Apple's finances have been flying high in 2011, just wait. A report by Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities shows that the company's supply chain is showing record sales for November. In turn, that could indicate record sales for Apple products during the holiday season.

Verizon planning streaming video service, gets ready to take on Netflix
We can't say we're entirely shocked by the move but, according to Reuters, Verizon is getting ready to enter the streaming media market. Android crests 10 billion apps a year after iOS
In sync with its 10-cent app promo, Google has confirmed that Android Market has cracked 10 billion app downloads. The figure comes just over three years after the store opened. Nearly all of the growth came in just the last year, about four billion of which came in the past six months.

Jawbone Up review
Back in July, Jawbone did something surprising. The company, best known for its Bluetooth headsets, announced it was cooking up a wristband called "Up" -- a wearable device that would track the wearer's sleeping, eating and exercise habits. Cox Communications brings live TV to the iPad
Cable provider Cox Communications has a new app available for subscribers that makes it possible to watch live TV shows and movies in your home -- on an iPad.
The Cox TV Connect app (free, requires cable subscription) brings live shows from 35 different popular channels to the iPad. While that's just a fraction of the channel lineup carried by Cox, it's a start. A similar iPad app from Cablevision allows viewers to watch all channels available to them, but Cox VP of Video Strategy Steve Necessary told GigaOM that they're in the process of negotiating rights with TV networks to add more content to Cox TV Connect.

IPCom fordert HTC-Verkaufsstopp vom Handel

Steve Jobs bio Amazon's best selling hardback book of 2011
When Steve Jobs selected Walter Isaacson to write his biography, he probably knew that the book about his life would be a bestseller. Sure enough, the hardcover edition of "Steve Jobs" topped the bestseller list for 2011, edging out "Heaven is for Real," "Unbroken" and other titles.

Intel Ivy Bridge notebook leak hints 2GHz MacBook Air
Following a desktop slip, details of Intel's notebook versions of its Ivy Bridge processor lineup have leaked as well. The lineup seen by VR-Zone will simplify into just U-series ultra-low voltage chips that use 17W and full-power M-series chips that use 35W, 45W, or 55W depending on the model. Research shows Apple makes top 3 connected devices in US
JiWire culls a requests from approximately 289,000 public Wi-Fi locations in the US and uses this information to produce a quarterly report on mobile devices. Its latest report for Q3 2011 confirms what Apple fans already know -- iOS devices rule in the connected device category.
In its broadest sense, a "connected device" is any device that connects to the Internet. For the sake of this study, connected devices are defined as mobile devices that may or may not have a cellular connection. It's the device you pull out of your bag when you're sitting at Starbucks.

Google brings graphing calculator functionality to search, still can't play 'Snake'
Well, Google's gone an done it, turning the Internet into one giant graphing calculator. The software behemoth has brought graphing capabilities to search, letting users input a mathematical function into the engine -- or multiple functions, separated by commas. And, this being Google, users can explore the graphs more closely by zooming in and out and panning across. According to the company, it "covers an extensive range of single variable functions including trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic and their compositions." Grand Theft Auto III 10 Year Anniversary to hit iOS, Android
Rockstar Games has announced that a new version of Grand Theft Auto III, the 10 Year Anniversary Edition, will be released for iOS and Android devices on December 15th. The app will cost $5, and run on only a select group of devices due to its graphical demands. On iOS this includes the iPad 1 and 2, the iPhone 4 and 4S, and the fourth-generation iPod touch. European antitrust regulators probe Apple's e-book deals
The European Commission has formally launched an antitrust investigation against Apple and book publishers Hachette Libre, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin and Holtzbrinck, the German owner of Macmillan. The commission is looking into the possibility that Apple conspired with these publishers to restrict competition in the e-book market in the European Union.

Intel, Micron make first 128-gigabit flash chip
and Micron on Tuesday say they had made the first 128-gigabit (16GB) NAND flash chip. The 20-nanometer part is twice as dense as before even as it keeps up a quick 333 megatransfers per second. With the option of stacking as many as eight chips on top of each other, it may be the first design to hit one terabit (128GB) of space in a single chip smaller than a fingertip.

BBC iPlayer coming to iPhone, iPod touch on December 8th
Global iPlayer will make it to the iPhone and iPod touch on December 8th, the BBC has announced. The paid video-on-demand service has been available on the iPad for about five months. Apple denied lawsuit versus Chinese firm over iPad trademark
Apple on Tuesday was reported as having had a lawsuit tossed in China over claims a small firm was violating the iPad trademark. The Shenzhen-area Southern Metropolis Daily said that the Intermediate People's Court dismissed the case against Proview Technology based on time to file. Proview had filed for the trademark in 2000, several years before work had even started on the iPad.

Der SteadePod basiert unterdessen auf Zug: hier wird die Kamera ans Drahtseil gehängt und stabilisiert solange dieses gespannt ist. T-Mobile, Vodafone and KPN raided in Dutch price-fixing probe
Details are pretty slim at the moment, but it appears that Vodafone, KPN and T-Mobile are among the companies that have been raided by Dutch regulators in a price-fixing investigation. The country's competition authorities, NMa, swept through the carriers' offices as part of a probe into alleged "cartel agreements" exposed by whistleblowers. All three of the companies have agreed to cooperate with the investigation and have denied wrong doing but, they're starting with a dark cloud of suspicion hanging over their heads already.

Canaccord: Apple, Samsung taking over US smartphone sales
Apple and Samsung have been gradually taking over the US smartphone market, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley said in a research note Tuesday. Based on channel checks e saw all three iPhone models gain real-world sell-through share in November and the iPhone 4S continue to be the top seller at AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. On UI inconsistency in iOS 5
A while back, designer Jake Marsh commented on an inconsistency in Apple's use of linen textures in iOS 5 (hat tip to Daring Fireball). In both OS X Lion and iOS 5, the linen texture is "underneath" other UI elements in almost every instance. In Lion, linen textures lie beneath the Mission Control interface, the main login screen, folders in Launchpad, and web pages in Safari. In iOS 5, linen lies beneath the multitasking tray, in Siri's interface, in folder backgrounds, and once again (on the iPad) underneath web pages in Safari.
Marsh points out that the metaphor of linen textures lying "beneath" the interface completely breaks down with Notification Center. With

Nach einem starken dritten Quartal macht HTC im November fast 20 Prozent weniger Umsatz

Letztes Quartal sah es noch rosig aus für HTC, das hat sich nun drastisch geändert: in einer heute veröffentlichten Mitteilung hat der Hersteller bekanntgegeben, dass sie im November einen Umsatz von 1,03 Milliarden Dollar gemacht haben, 19,6 Prozent weniger als im November letzten Jahres, als es noch 1,27 Milliarden Dollar waren. HTC hat noch keine Erklärung dafür geliefert, warum das so ist, in einer Vorschau auf das vierte Quartal war aber schon angeklungen, dass es bald vorbei sein dürfte mit den üppigen Ergebnissen der vergangenen Quartale. Bleibt die Frage, ob HTC im Weihnachtsgeschäft nochmal die Kurve kriegt.

The Highland Village outlet likewise sports an all-glass storefront and roof, flanked by limestone side walls. We imagine that's exactly what one gentleman thought before his two-week-old Samsung Galaxy S II I727 (Skyrocket) -- unlocked, we believe, given the Rogers SIM card -- decided to melt in his pocket. Wizard Ops is quite a game -- it doesn't feature a ton of polish (as you can probably tell from the screens above), but what it lacks in graphical flair, it definitely makes up for in the gameplay department. It's a game about wizards, obviously, who can cast magical spells, but it's actually more of a shooter, and plays very similarly to those pseudo 3D levels in the old Contra games. The twist here is that you use just one finger to control both targeting and shooting, so the game is a constant balance of both hunting down enemies with the on-screen reticule, and dodging their shots while moving through the game.

iPhone recreated in wood (and a toy iPad for the taking)
How great is this wooden iPhone, complete with special block icons to get moved around on the "touchscreen"? I'm not quite sure what it says about our culture that we're recreating Apple's magical device in this way (though it should be noted that this is an art project, not an actual "wooden blocks" toy for children), but I like it a lot. The icons are great, too -- simple and close to the real thing, but not quite.
And speaking of less-than-faithful recreations of Apple devices, I found the "App Calculator" pictured below in a Santa Monica toy

EC investigates if publishers, Apple collude on ebook prices
The European Commission detailed plans Tuesday for a formal investigation into major publishers and Apple as to whether their deal might violate EU antitrust law. HTC releases interim November results, growth down 20%
HTC has released its interim financial results (pdf) for the month of November and, as expected, it showed its first sequential slowdown in sales in two years. Apple and major publishers investigated for e-book price fixing
The European Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation into some of the world's largest publishers following a series of unannounced inspections back in March. Sprint LTE phones to arrive 'in the second half' of 2012
Sprint CFO Joe Euteneuer has spilled the 4G beans on the carrier's plans to introduce LTE devices, narrowing it down to the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth quarter next year. Compared to what we've already heard, Sprint looks to be stepping up its game: "We're talking about covering 120 million [people] by the end of 2012 -- we've accelerated this because we believe LTE is really key to our future." A detailed usability test for the Amazon Kindle Fire from UseIt has shown significant practical issues relative to the iPad and, in some cases, earlier Kindles. ZTE V881 is Blade's successor, adds modest bumps in specs
We saw the ZTE Blade V880 make its official outing at MWC in February, and given how quickly sequels to other phones have been coming out this year we'd say it's ripe for a successor. Enter the ZTE V881, a device that essentially adds a +1 to a few of its parent's specs: a 3.8-inch touchscreen at WVGA (800 x 480) resolution, a Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM and a 5MP rear camera. Meizu takes on iPhone again, makes MX official
Meizu after a long run-up confirmed the MX in its latest bid to capture the high end of the Chinese phone market. The version on show jumps from 3.5 inches to a four-inch, 640x960 display and is using a dual-core 1.4GHz Exynos chip from Samsung, not the quad-core promised for later. IBM can make landmark racetrack memory with everyday tools
IBM at the International Electronic Devices Meeting on Monday showed a working prototype of its racetrack memory made using conventional semiconductor tools. The 100 times more dense memory used to require a special research manufacturing machine but can now be made in a fully integrated way that should be much cheaper. IBM found it could put a nickel-iron layer on to a silicon wafer and etch out the 20-nanometer thick nanowires that define the memory.

Book reveals iOS secret code names, including unreleased 5.1
A new edition of a book entitled iOS Forensic Analysis by Sean Morrissey reveals the secret code names of the various versions of iOS, including the as-yet-unreleased iOS 5.1. Unlike the code names of OS X, which have been generally made public since v10.2, iOS code names have been kept unpublicized and are generally used only by Apple. Google Shopper, a price-comparison application that lets iOS users scan barcodes and front covers or search by voice or text to find both online and local prices and reviews for items, has been updated to version 2.0. comScore: 38% of smartphone owners buy from the device
A new study has found that a majority of smartphone owners have used their devices to perform shopping activities on their devices. The comScore Mobile Retail Advisor report showed that two-thirds of all mobile users performed some degree of shopping related activity, including comparing products and prices, searching for coupons, taking product pictures, or locating a retail store. US Cellular hints iPhone an option once it goes LTE
The chief for US Cellular's parent, TDS, hinted in a presentation at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Monday that US Cellular would be open to an LTE iPhone. It was "never going to say never" about Apple's device, but the carrier wanted the device on its newest network before considering. Online museum offers Steve Jobs exhibit
If you crave even more info about Steve Jobs, the Computer History Museum has just posted an online exhibit called "Steve JobsFirst NeXT, One more thing". The exhibit has lots of information, some archival photos and a smattering of videos, some donated by friends of Steve that haven't been publicly seen.
While not a comprehensive biography, I had no trouble finding things I didn't know. I also appreciated the links to other videos and websites that further illuminate one of America's most prolific marketers and inventors.

Google+ for iPhone gets full-size Instant Uploads, search
Google has quietly posted an update to Google+ on iOS (App Store) to bring it more up to par with its Android equivalent. Instant Uploads for photos now post the full-resolution version of a given photo. Anyone can also now give +1 votes to photos, not just posts, and search the fledgling network.

Use iFaith v1.4 to downgrade to iOS 5.0
The jailbreakers among you are probably anxiously awaiting the first untethered iOS 5 jailbreak promised by pod2g and MuscleNerd. However, if you've upgraded to iOS 5.0.1, you'll be out of luck because the first untethered jailbreak will be for iOS 5.0 only. Nothing later.

Sprint sees LTE phones in 2H 2011, hints brisk iPhone sales
Sprint on Monday refined its target for its first LTE-based phones.
