Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 rolls through the FCC packing Verizon-friendly LTE
Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7 is certainly no stranger to the good people at the FCC, as both WiFi and HSPA+ versions have already run the Commission's gauntlet of radiation tests. The third time's the charm for Verizon customers, however, because a new model dubbed SCH-i815 has made its way to the FCC bearing CDMA and LTE radios built to surf Big Red's network. SOPA vote unexpectedly delayed
In a surprise move, the House Judiciary Committee suddenly adjourned today without voting to send the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) to the full House floor. The bill had been expected to make it out of the committee today. The adjournment came after committee chairman Rep. Lamar Smith, who is also the bill's chief sponsor, agreed that further exploration was warranted of a provision that lets the Attorney General demand DNS (domain name service) changes.

Don't you hate that sinking feeling you get when you spend five to ten minutes filling out a form -- and then you lose all the data because of a hiccup in your Internet connection, or because of Safari's tab reloading quirks? PS Vita gets first public unboxing treatment, leaves nothing to the imagination (video)
Sure, we've shown you a hands-on, but we know your brain's been working hard imagining what it's like to unwrap Sony's next-gen handheld. The PS Vita could easily be considered one of the -- if not the biggest -- teases of the gadgetverse; since it was first unveiled, it's only had time for a smattering of cameos. Regardless, no one is questioning the Vita's determination to be in as many wish lists as possible by its eventual 2012 release. Folks who tend to enjoy teasers can find precisely that just after the break.

iTunes version of Avatar will let users control scenes, more
Apple has just announced a special iTunes version of James Cameron's Avatar that will not only include some special extras like the film's script and a big 1,700 picture special effects gallery of pictures to browse through, but allow viewers to actually control 17 scenes as they happen, switching between different views like the finished film, rough CG cuts, and the original live action motion capture footage. Viewers will also be able to "x-ray" these scenes, moving a special view around the screen that will show off the original live action footage, superimposed over the finished movie.

Sprint says it has disabled Carrier IQ on its devices
Sprint may have stood by its use of Carrier IQ on its smartphones when the furor over the software erupted a couple of weeks back -- while insisting all along that it was only used for network diagnostic purposes -- but it's now apparently had a change of heart. Review: Fresh Fiber Boombox, Camera, Macedonia + Mondriaan Cases for iPhone 4/4S

Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) comes to GSM / UMTS Nexus S starting today
You heard right -- Google itself has just affirmed on its own social networking branch that Android 4.0 will begin to hit GSM / UMTS (sorry, Sprint users!) Nexus S devices over the coming month, with the luckiest few to get it today. Outside of that, there's no more specific time table to be had, but if you're able to suck it down in the coming hours, definitely sound off on the improvements in comments below.

Sprint stops collecting Carrier IQ data, leaves software in
Sprint in a statement Friday said the carrier had stopped collecting Carrier IQ data from phones. Representative Stephanie Vinge-Walsh explained to Android Central that the software was still in place, but the company had stopped picking up cellular data. She drew a direct link between public reaction and the move, noting that the carrier had "weighed customer concerns" before making the switch.

WowWee's AR gaming toys for iOS look like fun
WowWee is beginning to see the value in connected toys that work with the iPhone and iPad. The toy maker is working on a line of toys that include an iOS app and a collectable that interacts the phone or tablet. One game is a zombie invasion that has four collectibles to go along with an iPad game. The figures are conductive, so you use them to control the player on your screen. Another game includes a small airplane model that you fly by attaching it to your phone.

OLPC XO 1.75 pops up at the FCC
Last time we saw the OLPC XO 1.75, it had its guts exposed for all to see on the CES show floor. This time around, it's being poked and prodded by Uncle Sam at the Federal Communications Commission. There are no photos of the newest OLPC to be found, but unless things have changed, it'll sport the same Celtics colors as its brethren on the outside and a Marvell ARM CPU underneath. As is often the case, additional details about this little laptop are few and far between in the FCC's documents, but feel free to hit the source to get your fill of radiation reports and performance charts.

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC review
All quiet on the Windows 7 tablet front? Well, no, but we haven't exactly seen many shots fired lately. Sure, HP recently refreshed the Slate 500 with the Slate 2, but for the most part, products like this have been eclipsed by excitement around Windows 8. AT&T adds four new parks to free New York City Wi-Fi
AT&T continues to add free Wi-Fi service to the public parks located throughout the five boroughs of New York City. The carrier has added four new locations in parks, including Tavern on the Green in Central Park and Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. This brings the total hotspot coverage to 15 out of a total of 26 that AT&T promised it would roll out in a deal it struck with Mayor Bloomberg in June.

Monster Digital preps 550MB per second LeMans SSD
Monster Digital, so far only known for its cards, said Friday that it's planning to enter the solid-state drive space. The LeMans series will use some of the faster memory controllers on tap, peaking at 550MB per second in read speeds and 515MB per second in writes. Daily iPad App: Monster Fruit
Monster Fruit is a game that, on the surface, looks to be incredibly easy. There's fruit in the tree. You need to keep the fruit away from the overexcited monster trying to turn it into a nummy snack, and to do this, you tickle the monster to distract it. If the monster gets the fruit before the timer is up, you fail the level. Once the monster calms down at the end of the allotted time, you can reward him with the fruit. Parents with toddlers know this scenario all too well.

Wolfram changes bring Best Buy results to Siri
Siri now indirectly lets iPhone 4S users have access to information from Best Buy, notes RazorianFly. Earlier this week Wolfram announced that its Wolfram Alpha service would integrate data based on public Best Buy APIs, covering some 35,000 products. Cox sells its 4G-friendly airspace to Verizon for $315m
Cox on Friday joined other cable companies in selling spectrum to Verizon. The deal, worth $315 million, will give it licenses for 20MHz of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) space in areas that cover about 28 million Americans. The two will echo earlier deals in letting each sell the other's home and business services, and Cox would have the option of selling cellphone service at wholesale prices.

Swype won't initially be available on Ice Cream Sandwich, but it's in the works
Swipers won't be swiping on Ice Cream Sandwich at least, not for a while. Swype tweeted the above message, indicating that the third-party keyboard company has its work cut out for it. Sony backtracks (again), multiple accounts not supported on PS Vita
First, we we're told multiple user accounts were a no-go, then this was withdrawn. Now, it seems that's now been retracted. According to an email send by a Sony representative to Wired, the PSN account on the PlayStation Vita is "tied to the hardware and the memory card" and a simple removable storage switch-out won't suffice. You'll need to hit the big red factory reset button in order to use a different account on Sony's online network, the doorway to both online gaming and their digital store. Ronald Wayne shows off rare Apple documents
One of Apple's original three co-founders, Ronald Wayne, has shown Engadget some rare documents kept from his time with the company. Wayne, 77, is now retired and living in Pahrump, Nevada. Among the most important documents still in his possession are plans and illustrations of a never-produced Apple I enclosure Steve Jobs asked him to build, and a Statement of Withdrawl, which cost Wayne $5 to file and severed his relationship with Apple.

Cox Communications sells 20MHz wireless spectrum to Verizon for $315 million
Hot on the heels of its acquisition of a glut of AWS licenses from cable giants Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House for a few billion, Verizon's at it again. This time, Big Red's grabbing a swath of 20MHz wireless spectrum from Cox Communications for a tidy $315 million. Study: Only 2.2% of Europeans plan for Nokia Windows Phones
Equity researchers Exane BNP Paribas on Friday suggested that Nokia's first Windows Phones aren't gaining significant traction in its home region of Europe. Of those who were committed to buy a smartphone in December, only 2.2 percent wanted to get the Lumia 800 or 710. The demand was "far behind" the frontrunners, analyst Alexander Peterc said, which included the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S II.

Find My Car Smart is first Bluetooth 4.0 app for iPhone
Bluetooth 4.0 became official recently, and now the first app to use this technology has made its way into the app store. The app, Find My Car Smart, is part of a Kickstarter project from FMC Smart. If funded, the company will make a Bluetooth 4.0 module that'll sit in your car. The app on the phone will locate the module and help you find your car in a crowded parking lot.

It's developed an Arduino-based plug-and-play bio-feedback game controller that uses EMG (electromyography) sensors to monitor the electrical activity in your skeletal muscles and turn them into game controls. Verizon Galaxy Nexus review
It's the Galaxy Nexus. It has LTE. It's the phone we've been waiting (and waiting) for. Sure, some of our more globe-trotting members of the staff were suitably sated by the HSPA+ version that shipped a few weeks ago, but the rest of us domestic types simply need more bandwidth. Or, at least, we like to think that we do, and this $300 (on-contract) Verizon release certainly has that in spades.

Ever seen a photo and wondered if it is real or 'photoshopped'? Been to a dating site and wonder if the photo truly represents the person shown?
Photo Police, a US$1.99 Mac app can often determine if a photo is real or fake. The app works by looking at low-bit pixel data, which can reveal if an image editor has made corrections or changes to software.
Program author Nikolay Kropachev told me that low bit data is usually white noise, and invisible just by looking at an image. The program applies some math and reveals the low bit data; changes can show up very clearly. It can detect blurring that might be used in wrinkle removal, or show where objects were deleted from images.

"Designed by Apple in California" -- you'll find that on virtually every Apple product. While it's well-known that the brains of Apple's outfit are indeed housed in California, it's almost as well-known that Apple's products are almost wholly manufactured overseas. Indeed, Apple has been a target of criticism in the past because of how much it relies upon labor outside the US.

iPad mini soll Ende 2012 auf den Markt kommen
Bei Apple macht man sich scheinbar Gedanken über die Einführung eines iPad mini. Zu verdanken ist es der Konkurrenz: das kleine Amazon Kindle Fire verkauft sich in den USA wie geschnitten Brot. Apple wird leicht nervös und will nachziehen.
Auf dem Tablet-Markt herrscht ein wilder Konkurrenzkampf. Apple ist zwar nach wie vor Marktführer, doch die Konkurrenz sitzt dem Unternehmen aus dem kalifornischen Cupertino bereits im Nacken. Laut „DigiTimes“ plant Apple nun neue Wege zu gehen und liebäugelt mit der Einführung eines iPad mini.

The 77-year-old Pahrump, Nevada resident has had a number of careers in his long life, working for Atari, a few slot machine companies, developing devices for use on the ocean floor and running a collectables shop in Northern California. In his semi-retired state, Wayne sells stamps and coins to supplement his checks from the government. Samsung drops 3G patent attacks on Apple, tries new lawsuit
Samsung has switched up its attempts to countersue Apple, according to reports from the key battleground court in Mannheim, Germany. The Korean firm was said by Florian Mueller to have given up its failed attempts to sue Apple over 3G standards. It now accepts Apple's point of view that the 3G license was already covered by paying for the Qualcomm chip in devices like the iPhone 4S, although it didn't waive the right to leverage 3G patents again.

Daily iPhone App: Breakout Boost
Atari's been on a remixing jag lately, and I was really impressed by the recent iOS take on Asteroids. Now with Breakout Boost, Atari aims to update another old gem.
Unfortunately, this one isn't quite as successful. It certainly is Breakout, as you control a little paddle across the screen, bouncing balls up to hit bricks, earn powerups, and score points. The controls are well designed for touch, too. There's a virtual handle underneath the paddle, and there's an added element of a slider that will make ball go faster (and earn more points) or go slower (and earn fewer). Fox is trying what it claims is a first for take-home movies with an upcoming iTunes Extras Special Edition version of Avatar ($20 pre-order, iTunes). The James Cameron action movie will let viewers see and control simultaneous views of 17 key scenes the movie that include the completed picture, the rough-computer generated framing, and the live motion capture. In seinem Blogpost kommentiert Kenton Varda ausführlich warum man nicht aussergewöhnlich reich sein muss, um sich so ein Setup zu bauen, aber wir sind dennoch beeindruckt. Für sein Haus hat er sich gleich zwei dieser 6-er LAN-Stationen in die Wand eingebaut und so ausklappbare Party-Plätze (wie das zusammengeklappt aussieht nach dem Break) in seinem neuen Haus gebaut. 40.000 Dollar soll ihn das zusätzlich gekostet haben. Beim Hausbau eher ein marginaler Anteil. Und wenn alle Stricke reißen, kann er sein Heim immer noch in ein Office umwandeln, die Arbeitsplätze sind jedenfalls schon da.

Following a formal petition from Senator Al Franken to handset makers and carriers in early December regarding their use of the Carrier IQ tracking app, AT&T, HTC, Samsung and Sprint have all submitted responses. Nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten (Passwort wurde nicht genommen – Apple-Server waren wohl für eine kurze Zeit nicht erreichbar), konnte es nun endlich losgehen! Die ersten Gehversuche mit iTunes Match!

iTunes Match geht in drei Schritten vor:
1. Die Daten zu Ihrer iTunes Mediathek werden gesammelt

Neue Apple MacBook Pro mit 2880x1800 Auflösung im nächsten Jahr

Digitimes hat mal wieder bei den Zulieferern gehorcht, und will herausgefunden haben, dass ab dem zweiten Quartal neue MacBook Pro mit einer Auflösung von bis zu 2880x1800 Pixeln kommen, also nach dem iPad 3 möglicherweise auch auf dem Laptop eine Art Retina-Display Einzug erhält. Die kleineren Modelle sollen aber bei 1680x1050 oder 1280x800 bleiben. Eine offizielle Ankündigung wird wie immer erst beim Verkaufsstart kommen.

Es war ja schon ein Mal so weit, aber der Link führte ins Nirvana. Jetzt ist Apples iTunes Match scheinbar offiziell in Deutschland gestartet und kostet 24,99 Euro pro Jahr. Damit lassen sich dann 25.000 Track in der Cloud auch für andere Geräte (iPhone, etc.) verfügbar machen und schlechtere Versionen werden durch ein 256kBit AAC ausgetauscht. Bislang gibt es allerdings noch diverse Fehlermeldungen

Kurz nachdem iTunes in der Cloud in Deutschland frei geschaltet wurde, ist nun auch iTunes Match in Deutschland verfügbar! Mit iTunes Match können Sie nicht im iTunes Store gekaufte Lieder mit der iTunes-Bibliothek abgleichen, und sie als “richtige iTunes Lieder” freischalten. Das heißt dass diese Lieder auch dauerhaft in iTunes in der Cloud verfügbar sein werden, und auf jeden PC/Mac/iPhone/iPad kostenlos wieder heruntergeladen werden können.
Der Dienst kostet in Deutschland 24,99 € pro Jahr. Die Lieder werden in 256 KBit/s bereitgestellt bzw. umgewandelt.

Apple late this evening released a third build, numbered 11D33, to internal testers with no known issues, making it likely that the public release is coming soon. 9to5 Mac reports. Developers will likely receive the build within a day. Barnes & Noble may have doubled its tablet shipments in the fall. Having shipped over 800,000 Nook Color devices in the summer, the company was said by part suppliers speaking to Digitimes late Thursday to be delivering a combination of 1.5 million Android-based devices during the fall. Senator Al Franken gets answers regarding CarrierIQ, still not satisfied
It's been two weeks since the CarrierIQ story caught the eye of Senator Al Franken, who swiftly put his fist down and began demanding answers from the companies that admitted to allowing the tracking software on their handsets, as well as CarrierIQ itself. Pantech P9070 brings a dose of AT&T LTE love to the FCC
Pantech's making all sorts of progress in the US LTE market, first with the budget-friendly Breakout on Verizon and then the mysterious P4100 tablet that went through the FCC this week carrying AT&T 700 / 1700 LTE bands. Now, a handset that has the same frequencies as the aforementioned tablet (including Band 5, which uses 850MHz) just made it through the Federal approval process. Known only as the P9070, little is known about this device other than the fancy blueprint above and diagram-o'-measurements below. Apple's fabled 7.85-inch mini iPad may be built late spring
Apple's rumored 7.85-inch iPad was claimed late Thursday to be going into production in late spring. Part suppliers talking to Digitimes believed Apple was staggering the introduction of a second model, launching the iPad 3 towards March but shipping its miniature counterpart before the fall, leaving the summer as the likely target. Previously alluded production plans would see both AU Optronics and LG Display making the new screens.

Windows Phone 7.5 SMS bug breaks messaging hub, hard reset is the only remedy
An SMS message on your Windows 7.5 handset could knock messaging out cold, a one shot kill you can't prepare for. Apparently, WP devices that receive a text containing a certain string of characters will reboot and return with a non-functional messaging client which can only be restored via a hard reset. The flaw is not device-specific and has been found to affect other parts of the OS, locking up your handset if you've pinned a friend as a live tile and that buddy posts the magic bug words on Facebook or Windows Live Messenger. Fixing the problem requires quick tapping fingers, as you've got to remove the pinned tile after rebooting before it flips and freezes the phone again. Report: latest 5.0.1 build offers accessible encryption key
The custom-built version of iOS 5.0.1 re-released for the iPhone 4S earlier today by Apple features an accessible encryption key, allowing hackers the ability to browse the file system and examine code without pirating the software. A tweet from iOS hacker MuscleNerd revealed that the file system could be easily perused from a Mac or PC, calling it "wide open" (though he later qualified that he meant for examination rather than security).

MOTU now shipping 4pre 6x8 audio mixer for Mac, PC
Audio hardware and software house MOTU is now shipping a half-rack hybrid audio interface and mixer called the 4pre, which features four mic inputs with preamps and a total of six inputs (including two S/PDIF digital I/O ports) and eight independent outputs. It sports an instrument tuner, front-panel mixing and two stereo headphone outputs. Mixing can also be done using the included CueMix software on attached computers.

IDC: Kindle Fire may cut iPad to 59% of tablet share
Amazon's Kindle Fire could cut Apple's share of the tablet market to under 60 percent for the first time, IDC estimated Thursday. Android would climb from 32.4 percent to get a collective 40.3 percent through the Fire which, along with some help from the Nook Tablet, would push the iPad down from 61.5 percent this summer to 59 percent of tablets. The BlackBerry PlayBook would lose some ground as well, down from 1.1 percent to 0.7 percent, while the HP TouchPad's final exit would give up five percent.

Pastmapper looks to take Google Maps back in time
There's not exactly a ton to see there just yet, but a new website called Pastmapper has some pretty ambitious plans, and it's off to a fairly decent start. With a little help from the Google Maps API, it's aiming to provide maps of cities as they were in the past, complete with local business information, accurate streets, and even changes to things like hills and coastline. Microsoft adds open standard support to Messenger, third-party clients now welcome
Windows Live Messenger may not be as popular as it used to be, but it's still accessed by 300 million users, and Microsoft is now hoping to grow that by making it a little more open. The service now supports XMPP and OAuth 2.0, paving the way for other chat software and services to connect more easily (some already do, but by using unofficial methods). XMPP is a messaging protocol (previously known as Jabber and used by Google Talk) and OAuth 2.0 is an open standard for authorization that both Google and Microsoft have stepped out with early support for. Woz says Apple could not emerge in Singapore
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak got a little political lately, saying in an interview with the BBC that a society like Singapore, with its relatively strict approach to aberrant behavior, would never be able to host a company like Apple, with its early days of long-haired weirdos working on groundbreaking technology in their garages. "Look at structured societies like Singapore where bad behavior is not tolerated [and] you are extremely punished," Woz is quoted as saying. "Where are the creative people? Isaacson: Jobs' bio may be expanded
During a talk yesterday at the Commonwealth Club of California, Steve Jobs author Walter Isaacson mentioned a few small tidbits that hadn't been included in the book, but also brought up the idea that the tome, which has turned into one of the top sellers of the year despite only having come out in late October, could be expanded in future editions. Eventbrite to release iOS ticket management app
I don't know about you all, but I've been using Eventbrite for almost all of my ticket purchases lately. Whether it's a benefit show, a friend's play, or a full-scale concert, I find myself getting redirected over there more and more to pick up my tickets. That's why I'm glad to hear there's an iOS app on the way from the company, which will allow you to browse through recent ticket purchases and upcoming events, as well as get information for all of the shows you're registered for.
Unfortunately, the news doesn't mention anything about being able to buy tickets directly inside the app -- it's possible, because of Apple's restrictions on in-app purchase

iTunes: iTunes in the Cloud in Deutschland verfügbar
iTunes-Nutzer in Deutschland freut euch! Ohne große Ankündigung hat Apple in diesen Stunden iTunes in the Cloud International freigeschaltet. Unter der Rubrik Downloads im rechten Menü von iTunes erscheinen neben Büchern und Apps nun auch alle Musiktitel die über iTunes gekauft wurden!
Wie von den Apps schon gewohnt erscheinen zwei Reiter: Alle Lieder auswählen, oder die, die nicht in der Bibliothek vorhanden sind. Über einen Cloud-Button kann man diese nun kostenlos auf den jeweiligen Mac/PC herunterladen.
Großartig! Nun startet die iCloud endlich auch in Deutschland voll durch, und man darf gespannt sein welche Einfälle Apple noch hat.

Apple TV updated to 4.4.4, iOS 5.0.1 'tweaked' for iPhone 4S
Apple has updated the Apple TV's software to version 4.4.4, though Mac Rumors and several other sites note that it's not yet clear what improvements the update offers over 4.4.3. MacBook Air: Ab 2012 1,6 Millionen verkaufte Exemplare pro Quartal

RIM sells more PlayBooks than shipped, may trim phone range
RIM while talking about its latest results added that it had finally reached a level of balance on BlackBerry PlayBook shipments and might trim costs for the whole company. In a rare instance of revealing some of its sell-through to actual customers, the firm said it had sold more than the 150,000 PlayBooks it shipped out in the quarter. Microsoft takes the wraps off of So.cl, a search-based social network for students
A few months back we got a quick sneak peek at Microsoft's social experiment which was, at the time, called Tulalip. Now it's finally gone official and scored an even harder to pronounce name So.cl. The basic premise is this: you sign up and search for stuff (using Bing, naturally) and your queries are automatically shared with your friends. From there things get even stranger. RIM: BlackBerry 10 smartphones won't arrive until end of 2012
Some unfortunate news was revealed for those BlackBerry addicts who've waited patiently for a QNX-based smartphone from RIM. Accessory maker Apricorn is now offering a Mac Edition of the Aegis NetDock, originally designed to add functionality to netbooks. The device, about the size of a standard external hard drive enclosure, combines an (optional) 1TB drive, a four-port USB 2 hub, and a dual-layer DVD burner. Best Buy teaches Wolfram Alpha (and Siri) new tricks
When it comes to Siri innovation, it's not just about work at Apple's end. Today, Wolfram Alpha introduced new shopping features built around Best Buy's public APIs. You can now use Siri queries to browse upwards of 35 thousand appliance and home computer products.
You can say "Wolfram, tablet computers", "Wolfram, LG washing machines" or "Wolfram iPhone 4S" and Siri returns price information. For individual models, you'll also find product images, specs, and features.
