Groundbreaking photonic chip could spark Quantum Computing revolution
Quantum Computers already exist, but not in the "universal" form that would truly revolutionize computing. That's why the latest innovation from Bristol University has so much promise: a team from its center for Quantum Photonics has built a reprogrammable quantum chip. The 70mm x 3mm box is capable of measuring and manipulating entanglement and mixture -- fundamental elements of the mythical "universal" chip. It's taken the team six years to reach this point, but now it'll concentrate on scaling up the technology to create more comple

Inside the Apple t-shirt collector world
The Wall Street Journal has a short but interesting piece on the world of Apple t-shirt collecting. There are two types of Apple t-shirts. The first are those shirts that the general public have access to via giveaways at Apple retail stores, such as the t-shirts at an opening of a new Apple Store. The second type are t-shirts that are only available to Apple employees -- often at the retail level.

Daily Mac App: Tweetdeck
Twitter upgraded its suite of apps recently and gave Tweetdeck for the Mac a huge overhaul. Users loved the twitter client for its column-based interface and hated it for its reliance on Adobe Air. The latest version of Tweetdeck keeps the columns, but drops Adobe Air. It replaces it with a lighter, simplified interface; but that's not necessarily a good thing, especially for power users.
The new Tweetdeck is a scaled-down version of the Air Version. It has less room for columns and fewer options for each column. On my 13-inch MBP, I can only show three columns in the new Tweetdeck instead of four. I also can't filter tweets in a column any more.
Notifications are hit and miss for me as well. You can choose pop-up an

Mortal Kombat creator talks about adapting Batman for iOS
I got to meet up with Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon on the red carpet at last weekend's VGAs, and rather than talking about the popular console fighting series, we instead talked about an iOS title: Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, which Boon's Netherrealm Studios developed in conjunction with Warner Brothers and the developer behind the console Batman: Arkham City, Rocksteady Studios.
Boon says the game's release snuck up on him just as much as it did iOS customers. "It's one of our first iOS games," he says, "so we were doing it, and the whole process of iOS games, they don't promote them leading up to the launch, it's just boom, and you hear about it going out. But we've been

Could DigiTimes rumors affect holiday iPad 2 sales?
Do rumors about Apple products affect your buying habits? Tim Cook thinks so, and so do analysts. A report from Philip Elmer DeWitt of Fortune looks closely at this issue and asks whether the recent iPad 3 rumors from Digitimes will hurt Apple's quarterly iPad 2 sales.
He points to remarks Tim Cook made during Apple's fourth quarter earnings conference call. Specifically, Cook blamed Apple's lower-than-expected Q3 iPhone 4 sales on speculation about the iPhone 4S. Customers, Cook explained, waited to get the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 4 because they were aware of its imminent launch.
Now that the iPhone 4S is available,

Lenovo IdeaPad U400 review
If you need evidence that the Ultrabook fad isn't impressing everybody, look no further than our inboxes. More than a few of you have been inquiring about the Lenovo IdeaPad U400, the 14-inch big brother to the IdeaPad U300s. And we think we understand why. Starting at a more palatable price of $800, it offers the same understated design as the U300s, except it brings an extra inch of screen real estate, along with an optical drive and discrete graphics. The best of both worlds, right? Beauty and a little more brawn? Not exactly. Though it looks the same, the U400 trades various components, starting with the storage disk and continuing on to the touchpad driv

If Siri were paired with a GPS app
We all love Siri. Whether it's the fascinating and sometimes unintentionally humorous comments that it makes, or the fact that it's surprisingly useful in a variety of situations, Siri has captured the imagination of many iPhone users. In a guest post for our sister site Engadget, NPD Group executive director and principal analyst Ross Rubin mused about how great it would be if Siri was paired with GPS navigation capabilities.
Rubin's got a point -- right now Apple's intelligent assistant can give you directions, but won't verbalize the turn-by-turn instructions. And navigation apps (and standard GPS navigation units) are, in Rubin's words, "about as passive an experience as watching TV."

Don't want to shell out the cash for an iPhone 4S? Lease one on O2
If you can lease a vehicle, why not a smartphone? That's O2's line of thinking, anyways, as the UK carrier has begun piloting a rental scheme -- called O2 Lease -- with the iPhone 4S in the driver's seat. For a 12-month lease period and £55 per month, you'll be able to rent the 16GB version and get 750 minutes, unlimited messaging, 500MB of data and insurance. Want a 32GB model? That'll be an extra £10 per month. Since it's a rental, you'll be required to give the phone back after your year is up, but at that point you're free to grab a new

Prevent certain accounts from unlocking FileVault 2
FileVault 2 is a huge improvement over the original FileVault implementation, offering whole disk encryption with no noticeable performance penalty. The only downside is that every account on the computer (even "standard," non-administrator accounts) is given access to decrypt the drive. The good news is that you can control which accounts are allowed to decrypt the drive by removing the password to any account which should not be able to decrypt FileVault (Don't worry, it's only temporary.).

At just under a year old, Apple's Mac App Store is celebrating a fairly significant milestone, hitting the 100 million download mark, a fact the company celebrated with a customarily self-congratulatory press release. Granted, these numbers pale in comparison to the some 18 billion app downloads for Apple's other App Store, but still, not bad for a year's work. Press release after the break.

Samsung outs two new Series 5 laptops in Korea, claims they're Ultrabooks
Is there room on the Ultrabook wagon for two new models from Samsung? There's a 13-incher and a 14-incher, which both come under its Series 5 branding, but at first glance only the smaller model might deserve its seat: it has the requisite Sandy Bridge processor and an acceptable thickness (14.9mm), but it adds 500GB of HDD storage on top of a 16GB SSD, which brings its weight right up to the 1.4kg limit. Meanwhile, the 14-inch variant only just scrapes through the 21mm thickness criterion, but its 1.8kg weight seems well overboard. We can't wait to see what happens when Intel inspects its ticket.

When considering the great technology advances of the past few decades, GPS tends to get short shift compared to such culture-rocking innovations as the internet and cellular networks. Just a few generations ago, the idea of hopping in a car with no clue how to get to a particular destination was foolishness (or at least fodder for gender-stereotyping comedians). Today, with an inexpensive device or smartphone software, we can do so with near certainty of finding our way.
