Must See HDTV (December 5th - 11th)
All you have to do is look at the calendar to know we're suddenly going to be buried under a deluge of holiday-season-specific programming. Of course, it's not all Michael Buble's Christmas Special, with unlikely sources like Syfy channel tossing in their efforts. While cable shows like Sons of Anarchy, Boss, and Boardwalk Empire wrap their seasons up, we also have a few new entries in the form of Luck, Moonshiners, and Invention USA. Motorola Droid 4 with LTE, Xoom 2 Media Edition with AT&T bands hit FCC
Motorola's been on a FCC-approving rampage lately, and we have two more entries to add to the mix. The first is what appears to be the QWERTY-packing Droid 4: not only does it come with Verizon's LTE band 13 and CDMA / EVDO (with GSM / EDGE / WCDMA on the side, locked to all US carriers), the docs make mention of the Droid 4's rumored 1,785mAh battery and shows test results with "slider open" and "slider closed." Court: Apple studies show Samsung won't lure iPhone users
Freshly uncovered portions of the redacted court documents from Apple's lawsuit against Samsung have revealed documents that favored Apple even as some potentially hurt its case for a temporary ban. Apple was found by Reuters to have commissioned a study that shows iPhone users are unlikely to switch to Samsung's phones. The Korean company's devices were more likely to cannibalize Android itself as customers left from HTC or another designer.

WSJ: Verizon Galaxy Nexus to sell for $299.99 on two-year contract
It might not come as too much of a surprise given other recent high-end smartphones, but The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will sell for $299.99 on the usual two-year contract. That word comes from people familiar with the matter, who unfortunately didn't get any more specific than "this month" when it came to a release date.

Sen. Franken petitions AT&T, HTC, others for Carrier IQ info
Minnesota Senator Al Franken has sent letters to several more companies involved in the Carrier IQ scandal, reports say. Franken is in charge of a Senate privacy panel, and has issued new requests to AT&T, HTC, Samsung, and Sprint, in addition to one sent earlier to Carrier IQ itself. The new parties are being asked to explain how they're using the Carrier IQ technology, and what data they're gathering through it.

Modest Mouse headlining Macworld | iWorld Opening Night BLAST
Last week, I interviewed IDG World Expo's Paul Kent about the upcoming Macworld | iWorld 2012. Microsoft delays Windows Phone launch in China until next year
Next week will mark the one-year anniversary of Microsoft's declaration that Windows Phone 7 would come to China during the second half of 2011, but the company has officially stated that it's not going to make the December 31st deadline. Instead, phones with the OS are now expected to hit the nation sometime in the first half of 2012. Microsoft mentioned that the delay is at least in part due to trying to ensure that Chinese citizens will have a good experience using the platform (Nokia mentioned that localization is needed in certain aspects of its phones to keep in line with the government

New carrier Ting promises cheaper rates, iPhone later
Best known for its file hosting, Tucows is planning a new virtual carrier based off of sprint that could lower the practical cost of a smartphone bill. Ting will drop overage fees in favor of automatic tier changes. Similar to an older Rogers plan in Canada, customers are bumped up to a new tier if they use more voice, messages, or data than included the plan, potentially saving hundreds of dollars over the course of service.

European regulators set sites on Carrier IQ, rootkit scandal goes international
Most of the bruhaha over Carrier IQ and its activity-tracking rootkit has been contained to the US so far. That's about to change though, and the software company could find itself at the center of an international privacy scandal. The British Information Commissioner's Office and the European Consumers' Organization have both started looking into the diagnostics software, while the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection has specifically engaged with Apple over its inclusion of parts of Carrier IQ's suite in iOS. How the iPad is succeeding in healthcare
Wired has posted a profile of one Afshad Mistri, an Apple employee whose goal is quite focused. As the medical market manager, he's tasked with connecting medical professionals and Apple's technology. Mistri couldn't chat with Wired for the article itself (Apple's less-than-press-friendly reputation is upheld), but according to medical personnel he's working with, Apple is pushing hard on the healthcare industry by setting up iPads and other brand new tech in medical workplaces.

Hipstamatic teases December 13 media event
Hipstamatic on Monday sent out teasers for a special event on December 13. The company gave few clues, but he did hint at either a change to the app or a new app altogether through showing the "next trend in mobile photography." The startup would be "making analog digital again," it said.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus purportedly pictured in retail packaging
We've already seen one Verizon Galaxy Nexus turn up at the Samsung Experience store in New York, and now some images of another unit have surfaced on the XDA forums showing the smartphone in what's purported to be retail packaging. This could well be another demo unit given the plain white box, but the red interior and other materials inside suggest that this could well be the real deal, and that a launch is presumably imminent. As for an official date? Verizon is still only saying "soon."

Kindle Fire seen taking half of Android tablet sales in 2012
Amazon will take about half of all Android tablet sales during 2012, according to an estimate from Evercore Partners analyst Robert Cirha. Instead of plastic or leather, Q Card Case is made of a combination of soft-touch rubber and faux leather. The rubber is rather pliable, and easily wraps around the body of the iPhone to form a protective lip. ComScore: Android continues to boom, RIM and Microsoft decline
Numbers, numbers, numbers. ComScore is back with a few more of them, this time covering the mobile market during a three-month average period ending in October. The results aren't going to shock you: Android not only continues to dominate the market, it's on the up-and-up. Out of 90 million smartphone users in the US, Android held strong at 46.3 percent (up from 41.9 between May and July). Apple, Samsung, others sued over Carrier IQ scandal
While the tech world was buzzing last week about Carrier IQ, one group of lawyers was busy preparing a class action complaint. The complaint was filed in Federal Court in Wilmington, Delaware by three local law firms: Sianni & Straite of Wilmington, DE; Eichen Crutchlow Zaslow & McElroy of Edison, NJ and Keefe Bartels of Red Bank, NJ.

iPhone 5 Display: Größer und gewölbt?
Mit dem iPhone 5 will Apple im kommenden Jahr wieder „the next big thing“ präsentieren. Entsprechend werden viele Veränderungen im großen Stil erwartet. So soll das Display nicht nur auf 4-Zoll wachsen, sondern auch gewölbt sein.
Trotz hervorragender Verkaufszahlen schreibt Apple mit seinem aktuellen iPhone 4S meist negative Schlagzeilen. Allen voran das Akku-Problem sorgt für schlechte Stimmung unter den Usern und jetzt gibt es auch noch Beschwerden über ein Rauschen beim Telefonieren. Sehr ärgerlich für die Betroffenen, bei denen die Euphorie über das im Oktober erschienende iPhone 4S schnell verflogen ist. iFaith 1.4 circumvents Apple blocks on downgrading iOS 5
An updated Windows utility, iFaith, promises to let iPhone owners to downgrade to earlier versions of iOS 5, according to famous iOS hacker iH8snow. IDC: Windows 8 will be 'largely irrelevant' beyond tablets
Windows 8 will be "largely irrelevant" to anyone who isn't using a tablet PC variant, IDC analysts predicted this weekend. Suggesting it was even more true than for Windows 7, System Software research VP Al Gillen and others saw any Windows 8 upgrades coming as part of the regular PC refresh cycle. Most of the changes revolve around touch, something which is largely non-existent on the desktop.

Gowalla confirms move to Facebook, service to shut down in January
Reports of an acquisition first surfaced on CNN Money late last week, and now Gowalla has confirmed that it has indeed been acquired by Facebook. Gowalla confirms Facebook deal, will shutter in January
Gowalla co-founder Josh Williams confirmed Monday the talk that his company had been bought by Facebook. The location check-in service is now due to ramp down by the end of January as most of the team moves to Palo Alto. Apple, Motorola, carriers join parties sued over Carrier IQ
Three lawfirms have jointly filed a class action lawsuit over Carrier IQ, according to an announcement. The suit is the broadest yet to involve the recently-exposed cellphone tracking software. Garnet Digital sues most of US cellular industry over patent
Largely unknown company Garnet Digital hoped to profit from the work of the US cellphone field with a lawsuit quietly filed late last week. It accuses those who make the OS, device makers who sell in the US, and most major US carriers and distributors of violating one patent for a generic "Interactive Terminal For The Access Of Remote Database Information." Apple reportedly considering Prineville, Oregon for data center
Apple may follow in the footsteps of Facebook and build a 31-megawatt data center in Prineville, Oregon. The Cupertino company is considering the 160-acre property because of Oregon's low energy cost. The state also has a favorable tax break that could save Apple millions in property taxes.
Apple is supposedly negotiating under the code name Maverick and is close to making a decision, said people familiar with the matter. OTA Honeycomb update rolling out to wealthy HTC Flyer owners

Sketchy hack brings full Siri to iPhone 4, iPod touch
The first hack to bring all the features of Siri to other devices has been released on Cydia, reports say. The 100MB software is called H1Siri, and available via two Cydia repositories, Cydia.be and iphone3gsystem.fr/cydia. iOS code names head for the hills
Apple's modern desktop OS is famous for its feline monikers -- Panther, Tiger, Leopard/Snow Leopard and Lion, among others. But what about the other Apple operating system, iOS? While the code names for those versions aren't used in the public branding and promotion of the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad family the way Mac OS X leans on Lion, they still exist, and there's still a pattern to them.

Apple denied initial request to ban Galaxy products in the US
Late last week, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh denied Apple's request for a preliminary injunction against Samsung. Apple accused Samsung of patent and trademark infringements and asked the court to ban the sales of the Galaxy Tab and other Galaxy smartphones.
Judge Koh did suggest she believes Samsung may have violated some Apple patents, but said there was no evidence Apple would be irreparably harmed by the continued sales of the Galaxy devices.
The two technology companies are embroiled in a messy legal battle which includes 20 suits in ten countries. Also last week, Australia overturned the injunction banning the sale of the Galaxy Tab down under. The injunction was supposed to end on December 2nd, but

With a tracking shot, the camera moves along a track, providing a sense of motion that isn't possible with a static camera. ESA abandons Russian space probe, hopes it doesn't plummet to earth
Things have gone from bad to worse for the orbit locked Phobos-Grunt space probe, having lost contact with the European Space Agency, the probe faces abandonment and disaster. The soviet star-gazer got stuck in Earth's orbit shortly after launch, stunting its two and a half year jaunt to the Martian moon Phobos. Attempts to send commands that would break the craft loose of the Earth's grip have failed, and the ESA has since given up hope of contacting the probe. Intel verschiebt Einführung des neuen Desktop-Prozessors um mindestens einen Monat
Nachdem Intel schon den kommenden Server-Prozessor etwas verschieben musste, wird dies laut XbitLabs nun auch bei den Desktop-Prozessoren auf Basis von "Ivy Bridge" der Fall sein. Plex app available on Kindle Fire, media servers and other clients get new updates too
For a media software package to survive these days, it has to be able to run pretty much anywhere and just recently Plex added the Kindle Fire to its list of supported platforms, uploading its Android client onto Amazon's Appstore. Signs of Apple's long-in-waiting Mac Pro update emerged in earnest after a discovery in the latest Mac OS X 10.7.3 beta. Netkas found code references in the ATIRadeonX3000 driver extension to "Tahiti," the known codename for AMD's upcoming high-end desktop Radeon HD 7000 line. The chipsets are expected to be the first 28-nanometer chips and have a completely new, liquid-cooled graphics core meant to improve general-purpose computing tasks like those in OpenCL.

Dabei sind die konkreten Pläne zur Errichtung eines neues Rechenzentrums bereits sehr weit fortgeschritten, sodass Apple Gerüchten zufolge noch in diesem Jahr eine Entscheidung fällen wird, ob man sich für das 650.000 qm große Objekt im US-Bundesstaat Oregon entscheidet oder nicht. Lovefilm's movie streaming will switch from Flash to Silverlight on PCs in 2012
As it prepares for Netflix's 2012 UK invasion Lovefilm appears to be taking a page out of its competitor's strategy, and it's all because of the studios.
