Apple Store may be coming to Masonville, Ontario
Attention, Masonville Mall in Ontario, Canada: You may be getting an Apple Store next year. A local radio station reports that the Eddie Bauer store in that location is closing soon due to bankruptcy, and city records say that the relevant authorities are checking out a $3 million project for that location that includes (what else?) an Apple logo. The space does sound about right: Busy, relatively upscale mall, lots of floor space, and a big storefront right next to a Gap store.
Of course, none of this is confirmed just yet, but remember that Apple moves fast: Even if the plans get approved in the next month or so, the store could be open as soon as next fall. Apple's been making a big push to open up some stores overseas an

Skype gives New York City free Wi-Fi for New Year's Eve
Following on its recent promotion to air travelers for free Wi-Fi during the past holiday week, Skype will be offering free Skype Wi-Fi for New Year's Eve and Day in New York City. For 24 hours, the VoIP provider will be letting revelers have general Internet access. The promotion runs from noon Saturday until noon on Sunday.

App developers skirt Apple's 100-device testing limit
The Wall Street Journal reports that some big iOS developers are having a real issue with Apple's limit on testing devices. According to the App Store rules, developers are restricted to 100 devices for testing via ad-hoc distribution. That may sound like a lot (and it likely is for small or individual developers), but it makes large-scale tests of beta or preview applications difficult. AT&T-branded Nokia Ace possibly leaked in holiday card
The grain of salt we're taking this with is roughly boulder-sized but, we have an image of what may very well be the AT&T Nokia Ace -- the rumored LTE-sporting Windows Phone from the Finnish phone maker. It seems that someone sent out a holiday greeting featuring a phone that looks a heck of a lot like the Lumia 800, except it prominently features a Ma-Bell logo, a 4G icon and what appears to be a front facing camera. Door at Lehigh Valley Apple Store shatters for ninth time
The glass door to the Lehigh Valley Apple Store in Whitehall, Pennsylvania shattered for the ninth time this year last Wednesday, a report says. The incident is attributed to sub-freezing temperatures and the wind, which started at about 8mph at sunrise but gusted up to 37mph by 1PM. As a store visitor opened the door, the wind caught it and threw it fully open, causing it to break into a "million tiny pieces," according to one person in the vicinity.

Apple iPad 3 screen possibly seen, unfortunately turned off
Apple's rumored 2048x1536 display for the iPad 3 may have been leaked out for the first time in a forum posting on Korea's Naver. The panel is the same physical size as the existing iPad 2 display but has a third data connector, presumably to feed the four times higher resolution. A Korean appearance points to it likely coming from an LG Display or Samsung Mobile Display factory.

Churches increasingly using custom apps
The iPad and iPhone are wildly popular among consumers and influencing both the business and education markets. This is just the tip of the iceberg for the pair of iOS devices -- their popularity will inevitably extend the iPad's reach beyond these core markets and into smaller ones like religion. Verizon bows to feedback, drops $2 payment fee
Just hours after an FCC investigation began, Verizon has said it will drop the contentious $2 "convenience fee." It directly acknowledged the customer backlash as the core reason. In a questionable justification, though, it claimed the fee had been implemented to "improve the efficiency" of payments, although it decided that simply educating customers would be easier.

Verizon backs down from convenience fee, values your two cents
The people (and government) have spoken and Verizon has listened -- and issued a press release. The carrier has officially backed off of the "single payment fee" that drew almost universal ire amongst subscribers and nabbed the attention of the FCC. Says Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead, "we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time." Lenovo, ZTE said uniting to stop Apple, Microsoft lawsuits
Chinese smartphone designers are quietly forming a pact to fend off patent lawsuits from Apple, Microsoft, and Nokia, a rumor maintained Friday. Lenovo and ZTE, as well as smaller firms like Coolpad, Konka, and TCL, were said by Digitimes to be forming a collective. The details weren't given, although a patent defense would most likely involve pooling patent resources together and sharing resources on how to work around other companies' patents.

Remembering the Apple Paladin and other prototypes
Way back in 2006 we had a story from AppleGazette about 5 Apple products which never made it to production. Today there's a photo of an old "touchscreen" phone Apple prototyped circulating (although I remember digging this up when the iPhone was announced; we never ran the story it seems) and I wound up doing a whopping five minutes of research on Flickr for more Apple prototypes. FCC to investigate Verizon $2 bill payment fee
The FCC on Friday said it would investigate Verizon's $2 convenience fee for one-time bill payments. Agency officials were "concerned about Verizon's actions," the regulator said. It was too soon to gauge whether this would include policy changes.

Verizon's $2 convenience fee inconveniences the FCC
Just like hard working humans, giant companies like to get paid consistently and on time for services rendered. But Verizon's method for motivating customers to pay up -- in the form of a $2 convenience fee -- isn't sitting so well with consumers, or the FCC. A Federal Communications Commission official confirmed that the fee hasn't gone unnoticed, saying "on behalf of American consumers, we're concerned about Verizon's actions and are looking into the matter." Amazon Kindle Fire traffic jumps 113% over Christmas break
The Amazon Kindle Fire's Internet traffic more than doubled over the Christmas weekend, Millennial Media noticed on Friday. The Android tablet's impressions on Millennial's ad network grew an average of 113 percent between December 23 and 26. Christmas Day saw a one-time 261 percent spike as people opened their presents.

Daily Mac App: FlashMount quickly mounts disk images
DMG files are often used when distributing Mac software outside the Mac App Store. While DMGs can be confusing to new users, I like them because they allow me to keep an original, unmodified version of whatever program I have downloaded. About the only drawback for me is that some DMGs come with an EULA which has to be accepted before the DMG will be mounted. If the EULA window gets covered up, it can be frustrating to try to figure out why it has not mounted. EULAs can also make DMGs unreliable to mount in shell scripts.
While looking for a solution, I came across references to an application called "FlashMount" which was designed to do exactly what its name implies: mounts disk images (dmg, iso, etc) in a "flash." It a

BMO raises Apple price target to $460 on iPhone sales
BMO Capital Markets' Keith Bachman this week raised his price target for Apple stock from $455 to $460. The analyst now sees Apple shipping 29.5 million phones in the December quarter, with the potential of hitting 32 million. An earlier estimate called for just 28 million units.

Casio intros first watches with Bluetooth LE 4.0
Casio Japan, known for its calculators and wristwatches, has just introduced the first watches with Bluetooth LE (low energy) onboard, making it compatible with Bluetooth 4.0 cellphones like the iPhone 4S. The G-Shock GB-6900 will synchronize the current time from paired handsets and will display incoming call names or numbers, e-mails, and text messages on its display. Users can also switch handsets into vibration mode without touching them.

Apple to appeal ruling in Italian court
Earlier this week, Apple was fined for poor communication of its warranty policies in an Italian court. Today, Apple has stated that it will appeal that ruling, according to The Register.
Apple was fined 900,000 Euros (approximately US$1.2 million) for failing to inform customers that they may receive free service biennially (via the Consumer Code) and for selling Apple Protection Plans that overlapped availability of that free service.
Apple denies up-selling the typically year-long Apple Protection Plan, and will appeal the associated fines, according to The Register. Apple was also ordered to alt

If you're reading this now and have experienced the wonders of modern air travel then you have surely suffered through what I call the "Terrible 10,000 Feet." This is the period between the clunk of the cabin door closing and the bong of the cabin indicator, the chime signifying arrival of the magic altitude where "approved electronic devices" can then be used again. Ich habe mir einen Kindle gekauft
Amazons eBook-Reader beobachte ich bereits seit seinem US-Erscheinen 2007. Skeptisch zwar, denn ich mag Papierbücher sehr gerne, aber dennoch interessiert, denn ich mag das Gewicht von Büchern nicht. Dementsprechend hat mein Kopf schon seit längerem den Schnitt zwischen wertvollen Hardcover-Büchern, die man auch nach Jahren noch gerne in die Hand nimmt, und simplen Unterhaltungsbüchern durchgeführt. Einzig das passende Geräte fehlt, denn in die Adobe-DRM-Hölle von Sony wollte ich mich nicht begeben und die Kindle-Geräte wurden offenbar in den 80ern designt.
Im Herbst diesen Jahres kam nun die vierte Version des klassischen Kindle heraus - nur mit WLAN, ohne klobige Tastatur, mit deutscher Oberfläche und für sympathische 99 Euro. Heute kam er an.

Apple vows to appeal Italian fine for bad warranties
Apple will appeal a €900,000 fine levied by the Italian government, a PR representative tells The Register. The spokesperson insists that the company is complying with Italian law. Under local regulations, businesses are required to give two years of free warranty support. Apple, though, only provides a one-year warranty by default, requiring buyers to buy an AppleCare package for anything extra.

French reseller eBizcuss sues Apple over unfair competition
Apple opened its first retail store in France in November 2009 and caused sales to plummet for local Apple retailers, says eBizcuss CEO François Prudent. According to a report in Le Figaro, the effect is so great that eBizcuss has filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging the company unfairly favors its own stores over resellers.
eBizcuss is the largest Apple reseller in France and has 16 stores nationwide. CEO Prudent claims sales have fallen 30 percent in the last quarter because it was unable to secure a reasonable supply of iPads and MacBook Airs from Apple. The company also never received the

AMD Radeon HD 7700, 7800 details slip out
A detailed leak may have given out details of AMD's mid-range Radeon HD 7000-series desktop graphics. The 7750 and 7750 as explained by Fudzilla would sit on the new mainstream Cape Verde Pro and XT cores and each scale back considerably from the higher-end but more expensive Radeon HD 7970. Both would drop from 384-bit to 128-bit memory interfaces and 900MHz core clock speeds.

Developers bumping into 100-tester ceiling for iOS apps
A 100-tester limit for iOS apps is causing problems for developers, says the Wall Street Journal. Apple imposes the cap on its standard-level developer accounts; a Journal source claims that Apple picked 100 thinking it would be a large enough sample for most companies but still easy enough to manage. iPad 3: Stellt Apple das neue Tablet bereits Ende Januar vor?
Nachdem wir bereits berichten, dass Apple womöglich zu Ehren von Steve Jobs die neue Generation des iPads am 24.Februar 2012, dem Geburtstag des Apple-Mitbegründers, auf den Markt bringen wird, werden nun Gerüchte laut, dass der neue Tablet-Computer bereits am 26.Januar 2012 auf der Macworld Fachmesse präsentiert wird.

December StatCounter data has shown an unusual resurgence in Symbian on the web at the very end of 2011. Having dipped under 30 percent in October, Nokia's platform not only bounced back but nearly matched its high for the year at just over 33.5 percent in December. You've got to feel for Frank G., who shared this story of holiday woe on the WWW Artist's Consortium mailing list. He ordered a Verizon iPhone 4S, and received it, but when he tried to activate it -- no joy.
Frank spent an hour and a half on the phone with Verizon tech support in an effort to activate, until they finally sussed out the problem: the phone wasn't allocated for Verizon. Rather than attaching to Big Red's CDMA network as it should, the phone was apparently set up with a GSM SIM that thought it was intended for one of Vodafone's overseas networks. We know the 4S is a worldphone but this is a bit much, no?

Fake Siri apps hit Android Market, highlight Google problem
Google has let through a pair of fake Siri apps. Both Siri for Android (Android Market) and Speerit (Android Market) both steal Apple's icon and, in the case of Speerit, try to clone Siri's interface. The currently Korean-only app claims to have "real" Siri, although the differing results on the weather widget suggest it's not actually asking Apple's servers.

Advertising itself as a cheaper Dropbox alternative with a better feature set, Insync has been in closed beta for the last 15 months. Now, they're finally ready to launch with a service that tightly integrates into Google Docs. It's "8x cheaper" than Dropbox, according to their marketing.

Der Storage POD mini von Super Talent hat Lese/Schreib-Geschwindigkeiten von 260MB/s bzw. 174MB/s und ist - logischerweise - kaum größer als eine interne SSD. AMDs A8-3870K auf knapp 5,9 GHz übertaktet
Nachdem die ersten „Llano“ mit frei bestimmbaren Multiplikator im Handel eingetroffen sind, haben sich Übertakter das neue Flaggschiff geschnappt und damit ein wenig herumgespielt. Am Ende stand mit flüssigem Stickstoff ein Takt von knapp 5,9 GHz auf der Anzeige, bei der Grafik ging prozentual gesehen sogar noch mehr.

Telekom will Bundesliga auch per Entertain Sat senden
Die Deutsche Telekom plant nach einem Bericht der Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) die Übertragungsrechte für kommende Bundesligasaisons auch für die Satellitenübertragung zu erwerben. Microsoft testet SMS-Bug-Update
Der vor zwei Wochen bekannt gewordene SMS-Bug bei Smartphones auf Basis von Windows Phone 7 könnte schon bald Geschichte sein. OS X Lion: Dateien ausschneiden (bewegen)
Als Windows-Umsteiger sehr ungewohnt: Das klassische Ausschneiden gibt es nicht unter Mac OS X. Das kann sehr unpraktisch sein: Denn nicht immer wollen Sie eine kopierte Datei am gleichen Ort lassen!
Unter OS X Lion hat Apple nun endlich nachgeholfen! Dateien ausschneiden im klassischen Windows-Sinn ist es zwar nicht, die Funktionalität ist dennoch die gleiche:
Mit einem Tastenkürzel lässt sich eine zuvor kopierte Datei nun an einen Zielplatz bewegen. Somit verschwindet diese von Ihrem Startpunkt, und befindet sich nur noch an der eingefügten Stelle.
Und so geht’s:
1. Beliebige Datei mit [cmd]+[c] kopieren
2. An geeigenter Stelle mit der Tastenkombination [cmd]+[alt]+[v] einfügen.
Die Datei verschwindet

Lenovo Ideapad S110: Statt Notebook jetzt Mini Laptop

Lenovo z.B. macht in einem eigenwilligen Video über eine Rockjournalistin schon mal auf das Ideapad S110 aufmerksam, das es wohl in vier Farben geben wird. Die genauen Spezifikationen bleiben allerdings noch im Dunkel. Auf Pro Vandale wird von einem Intel Atom 2600 gesprochen (Cedar Trail), PCR-Online hat sogar genaueres. 320GB Festplatte, 10-Zoll Display das sich HD nennt, was Spekulationen offen lässt, wir vermuten aber 1280x720 obwohl Cedar Trail auch mehr könnte. Those perpetual rankers over at Nielsen unveiled their "Tops of 2011" list this week, revealing the most popular brands and products across all manner of categories. There's nothing particularly shocking over on the digital side of things -- Google topped the list of Top US Web Brands, followed by Facebook. Perhaps a bit more surprisingly, Yahoo managed to hold its own in 2011, rounding out the top three. ESPN's bowl coverage swaps out the telestrator for augmented reality GameView
We dug into ESPN's use of the Xbox 360 and EA Sports games to power its Virtual Playbook segments last year, but in preparation for this round of BCS bowl games it's upgraded the system with a bit of augmented reality. Sony China shows W610, W630 compact cameras early
Two of Sony's cameras likely to be shown at CES were unearthed early through the company's Chinese wing. The W630 appears to be a straight-ahead replacement for the W570 and would have a similar 16.1-megapixel sensor, a 5X lens with a wide-angle 25mm lens, and 720p video capture. Software so far would be similar and center on a sweep panorama mode; its standout may be the inclusion of 2GB of storage to get users shooting right away.

GameStop iOS trade-ins a big success
GameStop recently started taking trade-ins on iOS hardware, and it turns out the decision was a great one for the company: President Tony Bartel said in a statement that the program "has exceeded our expectations," especially citing lots of post-holiday traffic, as people bring in their old iPhones and iPads to clear them out of the way for newer models received as presents. GameStop will reportedly pay out up to $300 for iPhones and $400 for iPads, but of course those prices are for the highest-end and latest models. Zephyr tweak for jailbroken iPhones brings new gestures
A hacker known as chpwn has released a tweak for owners of jailbroken iPhones that recreates two of the multi-tasking gestures that can be optionally turned on with non-jailbroken iPad 2 units running iOS 5. The tweak, known as Zephyr, allows iPhone users to do a single-finger swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the app tray, and also lets users swipe in from the sides to bring in the active screen of other open applications.

Deckster Re:Class iPod nano watchband is really nice, really expensive
The sixth-generation iPod nano has spawned a host of watchbands, all designed to turn the diminutive music player into a cool watch. Up until now, though, I haven't seen one that would make me shell out $129 to $149 for a nano just to have a watch. 60Beat GamePad controller works with iOS games through the headphone port
There have been a few game controllers released for iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone, but none that I've seen that work as elegantly as the 60beat GamePad promises it will. The GamePad offers all of the buttons you'd expect on a HD generation video game controller (with analog sticks and triggers and so on), but instead of using the iOS device's 30-pin connector, it hooks up through the headphone port, and apparently passes audio information across there somehow.
Unfortunately, because that's such an interesting connection, the controller only works with two games at the moment,

Avid releases Pro Tools HD 10.1 to support Mac HDX hardware
One month after the arrival of its HDX hardware card, Avid has released an update to Pro Tools HD, now at version 10.1, that supports the card. The HDX processor offers a 5x boost in processing and adds support for 64 I/O channels by moving to a floating-point architecture. The update is only available for those who own the HDX hardware or those who do a hardware exchange from the previous HD card. Various plug-in updates are also available.

Iconia Tab A200 and A700 slates head to CES, make a pitstop in Russia
Acer already spilled the beans on its Iconia Tab A200, a 10.1-inch slab powered by NVIDIA's 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, but whatever happened to that Tegra 3 touting A700? It went to Russia, of course. Netflix, non-Apple tablets among CNN's 'Tech Fails' of 2011
Tis the season for year-end "best of" and "worst of" lists, and while Apple has finished 2011 with a number of triumphs that landed it on nearly everyone's top-10 for Christmas presents, it was not without a few missteps -- two of which are included in CNN's list of top 10 "tech fails" of 2011. The company's "sins" are minor compared to fiascos like the Netflix/Qwikster debacle or RIM's various Blackberry woes, but they were enough to make the list.

Verizon already slashing Droid Xyboard price by $50
Verizon has already cut the price of the Motorola Droid Xyboard in a sign of possible slow sales. Both the 8.2- and 10.1-inch models have had their two-year contract prices dropped by $50 to reach $380 and $480 respectively. Off-contract pricing added later are still the same $600 and $700 as before.

Bed, Bath and Beyond selling off iCades for $49.99
Here's a weird deal that might work well if you poke around a bit: Bed, Bath and Beyond (which usually sells towels, sheets, and other household utilities) is apparently clearing out its inventory of iCade devices, per TouchArcade, which means that if you act fast and you're lucky, you might be able to pick one up from the retail store for $49.99. Facebook Messenger client for Windows slips out for download
We've already had an early peek at Facebook's yet-to-be-released Messenger client for Windows, and now you can give it a shot yourself courtesy of a leaked copy that's turned up on the TechIT website. Not much in the way of surprises here, but if you're the sort that prefers desktop applications to websites or mobile apps, you'll be glad to know that it provides access to not just Facebook chat, but status updates and notifications from your friends as well. Bekanntlich setzt der Elektronikriese LG verstärkt auf die OLED-Technik bei kommenden Fernsehern.
