We'll do one more big app roundup post today before the holiday weekend. The App Store freeze went off as scheduled yesterday, so devs can no longer change their prices or upgrade their apps until next week, but in addition to the sales already covered so far, there are still a few more apps on sale worth pointing out for you:

Buffalo zeigt auf der CES Geräte mit WLAN 802.11ac
Stand der Technik im WLAN-Bereich ist der Standard IEEE 802.11n, oftmals auch schlicht WLAN n genannt. Im Idealfall erreicht man mit ihm Übertragungsraten von bis zu 600 Mbit/s. TUAW Best of 2011: 360 Panorama and iMovie
The votes are tallied for the best iPhone photography and video apps, and the winners have been named. 360 Panorama from Occipital pulled in over a third of the votes (36.8 percent) for take the Best iPhone Photography App award for 2011, while Apple's iMovie grabbed the title for Best iPhone Video App of 2011 with 48.4 percent of reader votes.

Android, iOS user bases still dominated by 109m Americans
In spite of an international shift, nearly half of active Android and iOS users come from the US, Flurry determined on Friday. About 41 percent of the devices on those platforms running an app in the past 30 days, or 109 million out of the 264 million total, came from the US. Despite the rise in Asian use, China at second place had just 13 percent, or 35 million.

Nabaztag robotic rabbits rise from the ashes at midnight
Twas a sad day when Mindscape was forced to shutter the online service used by its collection of Nabaztag robotic rabbits -- as the tale goes, the domain's demise left the tiny, Linux-running hares inanimate, mute and nearly useless. iMAME arcade emulator pulled from App Store
As expected, Apple has now removed the MAME arcade emulator port iMAME (free) from the App Store. The free app used MAME as a method to play ROMs taken directly from vintage 70s and 80s video arcade games. It came with legal demonstration games, but could also (through the use of third-party tools) be used to play copyrighted ROMs that are not licensed or legal. Though no reason for the removal has been offered, the app was in violation of Apple guidelines that forbid apps from running arbitrary emulated code.

Friday Favorite: WhatFont, a website font analysis tool
If you're the type of person who looks at the design of a webpage, you'll want to download and install WhatFont. WhatFont is a straightforward tool, designed by college student Chengyin Liu, that apparently parses the CSS of a website and pulls out the font used in a section of text. It also tries to figure out the font in an image, but the tool warns you that it's not accurate. From what I've seen, WhatFont uses the CSS font tags of the surrounding text to guess the text on the image. The tool probably assumes websites will keep the font uniform across a page and not mix Helvetica text with Lucida Grande in an image.
WhatFont is one of those basic tools that's nice to have around when you need it. Sure you could do it be hand by looking at the source

Polish parliament to buy 500 iPads for lawmakers
Politicians in Poland will switch from paper to digital when working on laws in the country's parliament, following an approval to purchase up to 500 top-of-the-line iPads for Sejm legislators, according to a report in the Polish business publication Wyborcza. Each of the 460 members will get a 64GB 3G-enabled iPad 2 at a cost of roughly $400,000. The move will replace paper and notebook computers currently in use by February.

Apple's iPhone 4S Santa ad the most effective of the holiday
Ace Metrix tracking pointed to Apple's Santa Claus-themed iPhone 4S ad being the most effective of the holidays. Out of 950 points viewers had to assign, Apple's spot reached 652 points, or eight percent higher than the average technology ad. The scores were based both on how persuasive they were as well as actual information, their relevance to real viewers, and whether they stood up to viewing in the long term.

Managing 12,000 iPads: SAP CIO shares lessons learned
SAP's CIO Oliver Bussmann has a singularly interesting point of view on using the iPads in a business environment: He oversaw the implementation of iPads at SAP, which was an early adopter of using Apple's tablet in a full-scale company. He recently talked with the folks at InfoWorld, and says that going about the process open-mindedly was the best way to do it. SAP figured, right when the iPad was announced, that its employees would be using them anyway, so the company took a very ad hoc approach to supporting them in the workplace, building on what its employees did with iPads rather than trying to structure actual work functions around them.

HP issues LaserJet firmware update, hopefully ends exploding printer saga
Some of you might remember the story that HP LaserJet printers might be open to hack attacks that could result in some not-so-spontaneous combustion? DIY auto remote uses iPhone and Arduino to start a car
Here's a project for Arduino fans with an old iPhone sitting in their junk drawer. Following these instructions from Will O'Brien, you can craft a remote start system that's triggered by SMS. The setup requires an Avatal 3117 remote start, an iPhone breakout board, an Arduino, a switching supply cell charger and a handful of transistors, resistors and diodes.
The system is controlled by the iPhone which talks to the Arduino controller. The iPhone can receive an SMS message that tells the car to start. A perl script running on the iPhone will then send the command to the Arduino. When it receives the start command, the Arduino will ground the wire to the remote start and fire up the car

At Apple's online store save on refurbished Macs starting at $749. The refurbished Mac mini with a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, dual 500GB hard drives and Snow Leopard Server has been reduced by $150 to $749. GoDaddy backs away from SOPA after mass exodus
GoDaddy in a statement backed off of its support of the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act. The web domain registrar maintained that fighting piracy was important but decided that the backlash against it meant the company had to adjust its attitude. GoDaddy would only support SOPA if the broader Internet field did, and its very business was based on the concept of free speech many believe SOPA violates.

Study: iOS users do 92 percent of mobile shopping
Apple mobile device users have accounted for more than 90 percent of online retail purchases originating from a mobile device so far this month, reports market analysis firm RichRelevance. The company collected data from 3.4 billion online shopping sessions from online US retailers between April and December of this year. The percentage is actually up from 88 percent at the start of the survey in April.

RIM faces verdict in 'BBM' suit, may have used BBX knowingly
RIM was found Friday to be facing another lawsuit over one of its core products. Broadcast group BBM Canada is now known to have sued RIM on August 12, 2010, and to face a hearing on January 11, 2012, for allegedly misusing the BBM term to refer to BlackBerry Messenger. Unlike most such cases, BBM Canada could point to genuine cases of confusion, the Globe and Mail said, with staff being mistaken for RIM workers and an analytics branch being mistakenly called for messaging help.

GoDaddy pulls support for SOPA amidst backlash, too late to satisfy Wikipedia
It looks like the prospect of widespread boycott was more than GoDaddy was willing to face as a result of its support for the Stop Online Piracy Act -- the domain name registrar announced today that it has officially withdrawn its support for the controversial bill. In a statement, the company said that "fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation - but we can clearly do better," adding that it will support new legislation "when and if the Internet community supports it." Arcade emulator iMAME punted out of App Store
Fans of vintage arcade games know that the popular and free emulation tool MAME (stands for "Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator") can be used to recreate the experience of classic coin-op and console videogames on PCs, Macs and jailbroken iOS devices.
The catch, of course, is that in order to run the old games you need a copy of the game ROM code; said copies are essentially unavailable via legitimate licensing (except for a few Exidy games). So, what's so special about NEC's new 24-inch MultiSync LED backlit displays? Well, these nifty NECs have two ECO modes to help keep power consumption to a minimum, plus a feature that lets users to track the amount of carbon dioxide created by the electricity they use. It also lets you input how much you pay for all those electrons to track just how much the monitors contribute to your monthly utility bill. Otherwise, these are fairly unremarkable 250-nit, 1920 x 1200 panels with DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D, and USB 2.0 connections. Apple may win German ruling over Motorola for gallery patent
Apple might have a counter to Motorola's German patent lawsuit win with one of its own. A Munich hearing attended by Florian Mueller saw the judge "rather convinced" towards the end that Android's Gallery app at least partly violates an Apple patent in Europe. Based on impressions, it was likely that the court would issue a ban with a more lasting decision on February 16.

Doom 3 re-released for Intel Macs, now on Mac App Store
Game makers Aspyr have re-released Doom 3, now in a version designed for modern Intel Macs. The game, first released on OS X in 2004, sports a rare (for the Mac platform) "M" rating for its nightmarish setting, violence and gore. The new version runs only on Intel Core2Duo or later chips under Snow Leopard or Lion, and does not work with the pre-Intel 3000HD integrated graphics chipsets. The engine for Doom 3 was released under the GPL last month.

iPad 3 rush may be driving overtime at Taiwan suppliers
A combination of statements and rumors on Friday has hinted that Apple might be pulling out stops to get the iPad 3 released as soon as possible in 2012. Shoppers who are stuck for a very last-minute Christmas gift at a discount price can opt for Wal-Mart's ongoing offer of $50 in iTunes credit via a "virtual card" that is delivered via e-mail for just $40. Shoppers report the credit can be obtained after purchase in as little as 15 minutes, once users verify their e-mail address and use a special PIN number in the confirmation e-mail to redeem their purchase. The "eCard" can be sent as a gift to another e-mail address.

Analyst anticipates cheap iPad 2 instead of mini iPad
Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair doused investor expectations of a 7.85-inch mini iPad with an update on Friday. He believed Apple had been testing seven-inch tablets for "over a year," but he didn't expect Apple to release one of the kind in 2012. Popular Science shows iOS 5 Newsstand's boost to readership
Bonnier's tablet publishing wing Mag+ has provided an update showing more concrete signs of the iOS 5 Newsstand effect on tablet magazine adoption. Data handed to AllThingsD revealed that, as soon as iOS 5 was released, Popular Science added over 4,000 new subscribers. Growth in the weeks since has also been much faster, taking it from nearly 28,300 readers to over 40,700.

Acer may cut back tablet, smartphone teams
Acer might significantly scale back its touch device efforts if reports with possible official confirmation are accurate. The company was said by Taiwan's Economic Daily News to be dropping its touch business group and moving half of its 300 research and development workers there to other divisions. It would still have smartphone and tablet teams, but they would be cut down to 30 and 70 each.

Nokia responds to questions over Symbian name swap
Nokia's seems to have finally realized that it can't just kill off a long-standing name like Symbian with a mere three-word mention (in parentheses) on its official blog. It's now posted up a marginally more detailed statement in response to "heaps of questions" from Nokia fans about the name change, and it reads as follows:
"We are still using Symbian Belle with some audiences like developers but now we also have the flexibility of using Nokia Belle when referring to our greatest and latest Symbian software update."

Is your cellphone bad for your health? India's government seems to think so, because it's planning a law that will require all phones to display how much electro-magnetic radiation they generate. Google spendiert 300 Millionen Dollar pro Jahr für Mozilla

Die Überschrift ist etwas verwirrend. Natürlich ist das keine Spende, sondern der Betrag den Google für die nächsten drei Jahre jeweils an Mozilla zahlt, damit sie weiterhin Default-Searchengine des Browsers bleiben. Mit im Pitch waren wohl Microsoft und - man glaubt es kaum - Yahoo. Damit ist die Weiterentwicklung von Mozilla erst mal gesichert obwohl Chrome mittlerweile sogar an IE vorbeiziehen kann. Und Mozilla könnte sogar noch schneller releasen, denn bisher hatten sie von Google "nur" 100 Millionen Dollar pro Jahr bekommen, und das war schon 84% ihrer Einnahmen. Genaueres ist über den Deal bislang nicht zu erfahren.

Irgendwie geht es bei dem Amazon Fire ja fast noch schlimmer zu als auf Apple Geräten. Kein Zugriff auf Apps aus dem Android Market Store und volle Kontrolle beim Amazon App Store. Das scheint sich glücklicherweise jetzt ein wenig zu lockern, denn man kann immerhin schon mal konkurrierende E-Book Reader Apps installieren. Wurde aber auch Zeit. Ein Zugriff auf die Apps aus dem Android Market wäre aber wirklich noch Einstiegsbedingung für uns.

iPhone Marktanteile sinken in Europa

TypeStyler 11 appears on Mac App Store, on sale
The venerable graphic text-manipulation app TypeStyler has made its way to the Mac App Store with new version 11, and the company is celebrating the release by putting the program on sale for its lowest-ever price ($60). The new version adds a range of "grunge" effects to the program, allowing designers to create weathered or distressed looks. Graphics can also now be posted directly onto Facebook or Twitter, and the app has new Object positioning abilities.

Apple gets more traffic than Walmart, eBay in November
Early holiday shopping helped push Apple past some of the largest stores online for visitors, comScore said Thursday. Apple's website and iTunes combined got over 79.2 million unique visitors in November, large enough to push it past eBay (72.1 million) and even retail giant Walmart (58.5 million). Over a quarter of photos now taken with smartphones, according to NPD
I'll 'fess up -- on our wish list earlier this week, I was the one who asked (reasonably, I thought) for an Apple Camera. I've been shopping for a DSLR lately, and while the quality of some cameras are great, the interfaces are pretty terrible. I really do wish that Apple would step in and redefine the digital camera interface, matching it with the quality of a professional DSLR lens. But I am probably in the minority at this point, because for most people (as a few of you said in the comments), smartphones are enough.

Kia's Ray EV hasn't heard about aerodynamics, sets out to defy naysayers in Korea
That boxy thing up there? That's Kia's Ray EV, and apparently Korea's first mass produced electric vehicle. Looks-wise it's probably not the Hyundai i10 re-badge you were expecting, but that doesn't mean you should count the rectangular Soul-inspired city dweller out. Avatron's Air Dictate uses 4S, Siri for wireless dictation
A clever new idea from wireless iOS app developers Avatron allows iPhone4S users to leverage Siri and turn their iPhone into a speech-recognition microphone that does automatic dictation directly into any Mac app that is open and accepts text input, such as Pages, Word, TextEdit or Mail. FCC approves AT&T's $1.9b purchase of Qualcomm's 700MHz spectrum
Christmas has come early to the execs at AT&T, who are likely celebrating the FCC's 3-1 approval to purchase Qualcomm's block of the 700MHz spectrum for $1.9 billion. Apple vs. Samsung: Galaxy Tab 10.1N darf weiter verkauft werden

Next-gen 'prototype' Apple Store to be built in Palo Alto
Apple spokesperson Amy Bessette has confirmed that a new Apple Store, soon to be built in Palo Alto just one block from the existing one, will serve as a prototype design, "building on everything we've learned" in ten years of creating retail spaces, The Mercury News reports. OnLive reaches Xperia Play, iPad and iPhone still missing
OnLive on Thursday night brought its live play Android app (free, Android Market) to Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play. The already gaming-oriented phone can stream games and get full access to the physical gamepad, making it a much better fit for console and general action games. Portable Jaguar modder gives Ben Heck a run for his compact gaming money (video)
We bet you thought Ben Heck's Atari Jaguar mod would be the first and only portable hack of the ill-fated "64-bit" game system you'd ever see. Well, you were wrong. User Evil Nod, over at the Made by Bacteria forums, has whipped up a rather impressive compact console using the seemingly ubiquitous PS1 screen as a display. At about 1.75-inches thick, it's a bit bulkier than Heck's build, but it also doesn't have a giant battery or cartridge slot hanging off the back -- everything is tucked neatly away inside the textured black shell. FCC clears AT&T's acquisition of Qualcomm space for 4G
The Federal Communications Commission has quickly acted on its promise to reexamine AT&T's purchase of Qualcomm spectrum by approving the deal on Thursday. A three-to-one vote will give AT&T the 700MHz frequencies that Qualcomm was using on its short-lived Flo TV service. AT&T will primarily have to guarantee against interference and allow roaming from phones and tablets on rival networks.

Intuit to deliver Quicken update for Lion compatibility
Christmas from Quicken is coming pretty late, but it will be appreciated by many Mac users. The company has emailed users that it will finally offer a version of Quicken that runs under Lion and Snow Leopard.
Intuit Personal Finance Group GM Aaron Forth wrote users today "I understand the frustration this may have caused you and have put a team in place to address this issue. I am happy to announce that we will have a solution that makes Quicken 2007 for Mac 'Lion-compatible' by early spring."

Gannett Co. reportedly buying iPhones, iPads for journalists
A leaked memo from media giant Gannett Company reveals plans to buy thousands of iPhones, iPads and other accessories to use in news gathering.
The memo, from Gannett Newspaper President Bob Dickey says that the new devices "will help our journalists meet the demands of the new news cycle, one that requires agility in real-time reporting, social media and greater emphasis on video storytelling, further increasing our competitive advantage." Intuit will re-vamp Quicken 2007 to be Lion-compatible
Quicken customers have reported receiving e-mails from Intuit promising a new effort to winning back disaffected Mac users, announcing a new solution to make Quicken 2007 Lion-compatible that will be delivered by "early spring" and saying that the company is expanding its Mac development team to better support Mac users, AppleInsider reports. Steve Jobs awarded posthumous Grammy for 'significant contributions to music'
It's pretty difficult to argue that both Apple's iPod and -- to an even greater extent -- its contentious iTunes software haven't had a massive impact on the music industry. The Recording Academy has decided to recognize this, naming the former CEO and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for a Trustees Award for "outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity." It will be the second Grammy to celebrate Apple's contributions to the music industry -- its working in recording netted it a Technical Grammy exactly ten years ago.

LogMeIn remote iOS app goes free for unlimited PCs, Macs
LogMeIn Ignition, a $30 iOS app that allowed users to fully access and control unlimited numbers of Macs and Windows machines from their mobile device, has effectively been superceded by a new, free app simply called LogMeIn from the same company.
