Creative Zen X-Fi3 gets covered in FCC fingerprints
Remember the Zen X-Fi3, that little, bitty portable media player that we spent a bit of hands-on time with, back in September? Well, the FCC has had its crack at the thing, and the agency wasn't quite as kind, ripping pint-sized music player apart and displaying its innards for all the world to see, which might be for the best, really. While the outsides of the device aren't particularly exciting, the player's got some stuff going on under the hood, like built-in Bluetooth, which the company claims can stream h

XtremeMac InCharge Home USB charger for iOS devices

Let's face it -- if you try to put one of Apple's little power cubes into a pocket, you're likely to be asked "is that a charger in your pocket or are you not too happy to see me?" Yep, they make an awkward little bump in your pocket, with the iPad's charger being a little larger and even more obtrusive.

Perfect Photo has 28 tools including red-eye removal and a capable healing brush. There are the usual cropping, saturation, sharpen and shadows tools. The sharpen tool is particularly nice because it splits the screen and shows before and after images.

Native Instruments debuts first iOS app, iMaschine
For some time I've wondered when and if Native Instruments would enter the iOS music-making market. Being that they have such a respected presence with their awesome music software and audio interfaces in studios and with musicians around the world, it was irresistible to think of Native Instruments producing something fantastic for an iOS device.
Now their first offering has arrived for the iPhone with iMaschine. As demonstrated by musician and soul singer Jamie Lidell in the video below, iMaschine is a song creation sketchpad. With a whole bunch of drum samples and beats, the ability to create your own one-shot samples using the iPhone's mic, virt

HP Pre 3 death not exaggerated, FCC autopsy reveals Verizon life that never was
While we will never see the Pre 3 adorning the AT&T shelves of phone stores, the FCC at least had the courtesy to investigate HP's final webOS device in detail, though we doubt they were able to conclude the precise cause of death. The full devastating teardown reveals some Sandisk flash storage, and a tightly packed interior. There's another interesting detail found in those external images, too. As a previous

Apple seen spending over $7.1 billion on supplies in 2012
Apple should be spending about $7.1 billion on its supply chain in 2012, not including another $2.4 billion in prepayments to suppliers, says BusinessWeek. In a profile of Apple's approach to supplies, the publication cites interviews with Apple workers, supplier executives and management experts as evidence that Apple has used deals and bulk prepurchases to ensure a constant flow of cheap parts. The strategy has also reportedly interfered with the ability of competitors to operate, however.

AT&T moves estimate of T-Mobile merger close to spring
AT&T in an SEC filing late Thursday slipped out that it expected at least some delay in its attempted merger with T-Mobile. After originally telling investors that it planned to close the deal in or before early 2012, roughly a year after signalling its plans, it now expected the deal to close in the "first half" of the year. It reiterated the known $3 billion breakup fee if the deal is blocked or falls apart, as well as the required spectrum transfers and roaming deals.

Korean bendy memory could make plenty of trendy tech
Flexible displays aren't much good unless there's flexible memory alongside. It's been attempted before, but bending memory pushes the individual transistors so close that they begin to interfere with one another -- causing degradation and shortening the device lifespan to just a single day. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has solved the problem by pairing transistors with memristors, which are immune to such annoyances. By fixing both inside a flexible substrate

Apple has put Nokia in nearly the same market position it was in four years ago, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley said in a research note on Friday. Where the iPhone had four percent of the cellphone industry's profits in 2007 to Nokia's 67 percent, the rapid Nokia share decline and Apple's own rise to number two have reversed the situation. Apple now makes over half the profits in the business at 52 percent, while Nokia is at the exact same four percent as the company it once dismissed.

Canon C300: Hands-On und Videos der Kino-Kamera
Filed under: Digitalkameras

MacTech 2011: What keeps Aaron Hillegass up at night
Big Nerd Ranch founder Aaron Hillegass took the stage at this week's MacTech Conference 2011, and his talk was labeled, simply, "Going Mobile." That's a big topic, so after going through a few reasons why business and individuals might be for and against making mobile apps (all pretty standard discussion in the industry around the App Store), he discussed his concerns about the mobile industry; the things that "keep me up late at night."
What followed were a few questions (mostly unanswered) that Hillegass has been thinking about, relevant to IT professionals, developers and really anyone who's used Apple's mobile products. Hillegass' talk was surprisingly honest -- he tackled quite a few issues during the s

Last time, Yang managed to push only 30MHz over the previous record, this time he's found a further 123.3MHz -- making the total chip speed 8.58GHz. T

As of March 1st, 2012, Apple will require all apps available in the Mac App Store to be "sandboxed," which Apple says is "a great way to protect systems and users by limiting the resources apps can access and making it more difficult for malicious software to compromise users' systems." The other side of that coin is that by limiting access to said system resources, applications are also more limited in what th

The investigation, which has not yet been formally announced, could force Samsung to withdraw most of its complaints against Apple, IP analyst Florian Mueller reports.

The leaked specs are right on the money with what we've heard already: 2.4-inch touchscree

CBS boss reveals why the company is 'against joining Apple TV' (or Hulu)
There's been a fresh round of "Apple is building a TV" rumors lately, and now comments by CBS (which has been rumored to be working with Apple before) CEO Les Moonves during his company's earnings call may reveal more about what Cupertino would like to do. Many of the rumors are based on quotes by Steve Jobs in his biography that he "cracked" a way to make an integrated TV set that was easier to use, which would be a major jump from the current Apple TV add-on box. According to Moonves, responding to analyst questions about strea

Fifth Avenue Apple store renovation to be unveiled Friday
As reported earlier this week, Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York City has shut down overnight -- a rare occurrence at the normally 24-hour location -- in preparation for the formal unveiling of the remodelled store's iconic glass cube, which appears to be scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday morning, according to a note on the store's web page. MacRumors reports that workers have removed a portion of the white covering that is below the fence level of the renovated store.

Mentioning it just at the end of the unveiling of the EOS C300, Canon has shown an early prototype of an upcoming pro DSLR with record-setting video. The unnamed prototype would have a full-frame CMOS sensor and could shoot 4K (usually 4096x2160) video at 24FPS when using Motion JPEG. Very little else was mentioned, although it had the same red "C" badge from the C300 that denoted the Cinema badge.

Amazon may scale down next Kindle Fire to 8.9-inch display
Amazon's follow-up Kindle Fire may use a smaller screen than originally planned. Part suppliers claimed late Thursday that Chungwa Picture Tubes and LG Display, both of whom already make Kindle Fire displays, were ramping up their production for Amazon 8.9-inch screens. The Digitimes sources didn't have a timeframe, although they left room open for an iPad-like 9.7-inch version or the 10.1-inch panel that others had rumored might come.

Daily Mac App: Screen Snake
Remember the old cellphone game Snake? It's been around longer than I've been alive, but became a hit once it became standard on Nokia cellphones. I have fond memories of standing in cold registration lines in college and playing the game as I waited to sign up for classes.
Screen Snake is a free version of that game that's been ported to the Mac. It's as easy to play as the cellphone version and launching the game automatically starts the snake crawling across your

Canon C300 cinema camera hands-on (video)
Man is this thing ugly. But when it comes to cinema cameras, looks are the last thing on a cinematographer's mind -- performance is where it counts, and with the Canon C300, its compact size is an asset as well. We haven't had a chance to shoot with Canon's new flagship cinema cam, but we've heard from plenty of folks who have, including director Vincent Laforet. The C300's incredibly compact size allows cinema photographers to work in environments that aren't typically accessible to big rigs -- you can shoot with this camera just as easily as you can with a DSLR, hand-holding it for quick shots, with a waist

Hitting it big in the App Store ... or not
Lots of developers are aiming for huge success in the App Store, and it seems like nearly every day we're reading about someone who made a big game and is picking up something like a million dollars a day from customers clicking that little "Install" button.
L'Escapadou didn't make quite that much -- it's a studio that works on "educational and fun apps for iOS," and in this blog post, developer Pierre Abel walks through the $200,000 the company has made on the App Store so far. As you can read, however, it's a combination of a lot of hard work, and a little bit of luck -- Abel worked for months on the few apps he's produced for the store, and only after he got covered in the press for the right audience did he

Kard Combat, Spy Mouse, more push big updates
Hothead Games' great freemium card game for iOS, Kard Combat, has gotten a big update this week in the App Store. The biggest new feature is a new "pass-and-play" multiplayer mode, which allows for two players with one iOS device in the same place to play their cards out, and then pass the device on to the next person. Obviously, it requires a little bit of honor on the part of players, but if you just want to play a friendly game of Kard Combat, it's a cool mode to try. Game Center multiplayer has also been added to the game to work inside iOS 5, and there are new UI updates and a few other new features in there as well.

This move leaves Apple's iBooks initiative further behind in terms of innovation and trailblazing. The Kindle app runs on most computers and devices, including OS X and iOS. iBooks is limited to iOS platforms only. Kindle has long provided person-to-
