iPhone 4S welcomed by AT&T activation delays, iCloud stumbles out of the gate
If you've unboxed a shiny new iPhone 4S from AT&T today, you've most likely had an experience similar to many others who made the same purchase: frustration. It seems that the surge in activity from the release of Apple's new handset has reduced activation traffic on Ma Bell's network to a crawl. This isn't the first time the carrier has had issues on launch day -- but back then, it did

The costly gamble of designing iOS cases based on rumors
Bloomberg's Businessweek has a nice writeup on one of the shadier practices around a new Apple launch like the iPhone 4S this week: case manufacturers building their entire product lines off of leaked or sometimes illicitly obtained information. Businessweek profiles Tim Hickman of Hard Candy Cases (who's been forthcoming with us here at TUAW in the past about how he manufactures cases to be ready for new Apple products as soon as possible), and talks about how he and other manufacturers often

BlackBerry outage might cost RIM $100 million
RIM's four-day BlackBerry outage might have cost it $100 million, JPMorgan Chase analyst Rod Hall estimated on Friday. Although he couldn't verify exact pricing because of RIM's confidentiality, he based the estimate on the calculation that RIM would collect $1 billion as part of its usual revenue sharing with carriers. Hall cautioned that there could be a significant margin of error, but he added that RIM would have to likely have to pay at least some of it back.

Ballistic Universal Sport Rugged: Tough protection for your iPhone
Just in time for the iPhone 4S, Ballistic sent me one of their Ballistic Universal Sport Rugged (US$29.99) holsters to check out. It's a great case for those who want a clip-on holster-style case that offers a medium level of protection of your iPhone (all models) while providing quick access for calls or working with apps.

I'm usually not a fan of things that clip onto your belt. Way back in the early 2000s, I had a small Nokia phone clipped to my belt while doing some four-wheeling near Ouray, Colorado. To check clearance between the huge rocks on the dirt road and the bottom of my vehicle, I kept hopping out of the driver's seat to take a look. Upon returning to Ouray for a celebratory beer, I discovered

Siri hackage proceeds apace
I love Siri. You love Siri. We all love Siri -- and we want it on our iPhones 4 and 3GS, not just on the 4S. Numerous iOS hobbyists including limneos, Gojohnnyboi, and iH8sn0w have been hard at work trying to bring Siri over from the 4S to other platforms.
After weeks of work -- this effort predates the iOS 5 release and the 4S debut -- they have made substantial progress. What you're looking at here represents some preliminary results, enabling the assistant in the device settings.
The Siri-porting team is still working on launching the background daemon, providing the interactive magic dialog "pocket" and other system features.

iPhone 4S review
This isn't the iPhone 5. No matter how badly you wanted something slim, sleek and wedge-shaped, this isn't it. If you went ahead and got your hopes up ahead of Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event, hopefully you've gotten over the pangs of discontent by now, because this device pictured front and center is the iPhone 4S. It's a new spin on an old phone that will shock none, but give it half a chance, and it will still impress.
The iPhone 4S comes with a faster processor, a better camera, a smarter virtual assistant and twice the storage of its predecessor -- if you don't mind paying for it. Like the

Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me drive with Siri
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I was super-excited about Siri, especially for use when driving. But I was very surprised to discover that the "Maps & Directions" feature of Siri is sneakily labelled "U.S. Only" - (look really, really closely).
As a Brit, does this mean Siri won't provide me any location services? Why? I thought it just pulled data off Google Maps, which is international?
The Apple UK iPhone 4S page has identical screenshots to the US one, but minus all references to location features
Why this injustice, Aunt TUAW?

iPhone 4S teardown confirms Sony camera
A deeper investigation into the iPhone 4S' camera has confirmed Sir Howard Stringer's claim that Sony was supplying next-generation iPhone cameras. Chipworks used an infrared microscope to check the normally hidden chip markings and found a conspicuous "Sony" on the image sensor. X-rays also show that the sensor layout itself is different and that it's not just a direct upgrade to the earlier OmniVision sensor.

The application sets up the call for you, and then you use the standard iOS Phone app to call a local number to the ChatTime exchange. ChatTime negotiates the overseas portion of the call, and debits your account based on the type and destination of your call.
For example, a call to a UK cell phone costs roughly ten times as much as one to a land line. A ChatTime spokesman told us, "Rates

Angeblich soll es nämlich Probleme geben, sobald man die Befehle mit einer normabweichenden Sprache ausführt. Huawei blocked from first responder network contract, US cites 'national security concerns'
The inability to win US government approval isn't exactly an unfamiliar issue for Huawei, which by now must be conditioned not to expect a nod from major US telecom companies. But now, The Daily Beast reports that the U.S. Commerce Department has made it very clear that the Chinese company won't have a role in building the country's new dedicated first responder wireless network. A spokesman wasn't shy about the reason, either, explaining that Huawei "will not be taking part in the building of America's interoperable wireless emergency network for first responders due

Motorola Xoom Family Edition includes kid-friendly apps, will hit Best Buy Sunday for $379

News: iPhone 4S: Initial impressions and discoveries
iLounge is continuing to test the iPhone 4S ahead of our comprehensive review, but we wanted to bring you some of our initial findings beforehand. We experienced some serious delays trying to activate one of our AT&T units; connecting it to a Mac and trying to activate through iTunes seemed to fix the issue. Kickin' Momma becomes Gem King, Hothead tells us why
I am a fan of Hothead Games' Kickin' Momma, a colorful, Peggle-style title that appeared on the App Store a couple months back. Just recently, that game disappeared from the store, and in its place now is a new title called Gem King. It's free to download and employes a freemium, in-app purchase system. A few of the comments on that game accuse Hothead of some questionable business practices in making the apparent switch to the new title, so TUAW spoke with Hothead's Oliver Birch and Joel DeYoung to figure out exactly what happened.
In short, Kickin' Momma, while a good game ("Our highest rated game ye

Apple already pumping over $750 million into NC datacenter
Apple has already sunk at least $750 million into its North Carolina datacenter, Asymco's Horace Dediu observes. The information comes from Property, Plant and Equipment information in the company's quarterly statements. Roughly $1 billion was spent on that category between December 26th 2009 and December 25th 2010; the $750 million figure comes from deducting an estimated $250 million for the space for the future "spaceship" campus.

iPhone 4S launch: Apple Store 5th Avenue, linewalk
As per standard operating procedure for iOS product launches, this morning's iPhone 4S introduction found the line at the Apple flagship store in New York City around the block -- or in this case, around the corner. It was a much smaller crowd than for the iPad 2 launch, but that product didn't have a pre-order option so there was more cause to queue up.

Both models handle 6GB/s SATA III, are powered by the "server grade" Marvell 88SS9174 controller chip and deliver up to 500MB/s reads and 440MB/s writes. Video: Chinesische Roboter-Zwillinge spielen Tischtennis
Filed under: Roboter

FCC: AT&T has little evidence merger would create jobs
FCC Wireless Bureau leader Rick Kaplan cast further doubt on AT&T's attempted buyout of T-Mobile with a statement that rejected AT&T's view the merger would create jobs. Documents submitted by the carrier so far have so far given "almost nothing in response" to calls for proof, the division head explained to The Hill. AT&T has argued that it would lead to as many as 96,000 jobs, but hasn't exactly how that would happen beyond putting 5,000 low-level call center jobs back onshore.

That hide-the-Newsstand trick? It works
Yes, it works.
You can hide Newsstand and it works exactly like those hundreds of posts and tips and videos say it does. We don't know exactly who figured this out -- coverage of the trick is pretty widespread at this point and there aren't exact credits -- but kudos to who did. It wasn't us.
Basically, there's a tiny bug in iOS 5 that allows you to stick Newsstand into a folder if you catch it just as you're making another folder. It's a litt

Box rides on iCloud's coattails, offers 50GB of free cloud storage to iOS users
No, your eyes don't deceive you -- Box is offering 50GBs of free storage inside its cloud for iOS users -- just like it did for TouchPad owners back in June. Anyone who downloads the latest version of Box's app for iPad and iPhone will receive their massive lot for data storage after registering an account (existing accounts can join in on the fun as well). To make better use of that extra space, Box will also be bumping upload capacity from 25MB to 100MB per file and baking in AirPlay support. Look, Box is obviously skitching on iCl

It's hard being the Jan to Japan's Marsha, always sitting quietly on the sidelines and watching as the "prettier" sister gets lavished with the latest goods. Well, envy doth strike again as Sony's partnered with NTT DoCoMo to add a dash of cellular connectivity to its line of slates. While the country's already seen the launch of the Tablet S earlier this September, that particular model was WiFi-only. A look inside Verizon's test car: we go heads-in at CTIA E&A 2011
Imagine if Verizon's Testman was actually the admiral of a fleet of Chevy Tahoes, all dedicated to the purpose of testing and comparing networks and asking if others can hear them now over a million times each year. The famous Testman himself is just an actor, of course, but Verizon's self-proclaimed "test cars" are a thing of reality; in fact, the fleet numbers a cool hundred nationwide. We had the opportunity to take a quick peek inside one of these cars, each of which drive an endless number of miles to measure the performance of not only Big Red's network, but its competition as well.

Apple might have trouble proving the patents were violated, she said.

But the 10.7.2 update also brought other features, such as a speedier Safari web browser and stability improvements. However, there are also some small, very welcome, interface changes I've been noticing as I've been using 10.7.2 over the last 24 hours:

GTA3 was the first title in the series to make the jump to 3D, and it's a landmark title in the open world crime genre that's been copied over and over since then. The game will be compatib

New study says almost half of iPhone owners plan to upgrade to the 4S
A new study, by Retrevo, has been released today. The numbers, especially for iPhone 4 owners are higher than I might have expected.
Here are some of the highlights:
44% of 3G and 3GS owners plan to upgrade to the iPhone 4S
42% of iPhone 4 owners say they plan to make the jump
24% of Android owners say they are coming on board the Apple 4S
12% of Android owners say they are willing to switch
Other tidbits from the study: 18% of buyers are willing to wait in a long line to get the phone. 53% of Apple iPhone owners are not disappointed with the 4S, but 21% wish it had a new design. 29% wanted 4G connectivity, and 12% wish it had a larger display.

Horn Bike: the bike-mounted passive amplifier for iPhone 4

But the drawback to cycling with an iPhone is obvious: if it's held in your hand you're going to A.) drop it eventually, or B.) fall off your bike trying to catch your iPhone when you drop it eventually. That's where Horn Bike comes in. The all-silicon device lets you ride in style like it's 1899.

iOS 5 features: Newsstand
My nomination for the most underwhelming feature in iOS 5 goes to Newsstand. Touted by Apple as a one-stop shop for getting newspaper and magazine subscriptions in iOS, it has a lackluster selection, and its organization approach is baffling a lot of people.
Newsstand is a homescreen folder much like any other folder you can create in iOS. However, it's got some magical properties; you can't add apps to it, nor can you delete it. It's the bucket where Apple slots periodicals apps that live in the Newsstand section of the App Store. You're not browsing a separate store when you're in Newsstand. For proof, click on one of the bottom buttons and you can navigate to other parts of the App Store.
If you ask me, Newsstand is pointless and irrelevant. It would have been better for Apple to take a cue fro
