Windows 8 on a laptop in-depth preview (video)
Less than 24 hours after it went live on Microsoft's site, Steve Ballmer reported a whopping 500,000 downloads of Windows 8 Developer Preview. That's half a million copies, if not eager Windows fans. Well, you can count us among them. Although we were treated to some private hands-on time with a tablet optimized for the OS, we hadn't, until now, had a chance to use it on a laptop -- i.e., the computing environment where we spend most of our time, and the one where we're most used to seeing Windows, in particular.

While not available on the MAS, it helps you browse the store in various ways that make the experience much more efficient and even fun. Google Chrome 14 final gives full-screen Lion, Native Client
Google concluded the week with the final release of Chrome 14. Following a month after the beta, it represents the first version of the OS with support for Mac OS X Lion's native elements. It uses full-screen mode and the 'invisible' scroll bars while also mending crashes from the earlier release.

Adobe: yep, your Windows 8 system will support Flash -- sometimes (video)
Flash fans can breathe a collective sigh of relief -- Adobe has confirmed that the next version of Windows will, in fact, support work built on its once ubiquitous web publishing platform. Seven states join DOJ lawsuit trying to block AT&T, T-Mobile
Resistance to AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile grew on Friday after seven states joined the Department of Justice lawsuit aiming to block the deal. California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington all supported the view that the merger would reduce competition. DOJ officials were "pleased" at the support and reiterated its view that the deal would hurt the US.

Apple's patent win over HTC will be reviewed by U.S. Trade Agency
According to a report from Bloomberg, the ITC will re-examine an earlier decision that HTC infringed on two Apple patents. The six member commission has the power to either overturn or confirm the original decision. If it's upheld, this could lead to a ban on the sales of HTC's Android devices in the US.
HTC is allegedly infringing on patents involving data transmission and the identification of phone numbers in an email. HTC was found not to be infringing on two other patents that focused on object oriented programming As expected, HTC is pleased with the board's decision to review the case. The

Samsung files patent claims against Apple in Australia
The Apple/Samsung patent war continues. This week the latest battleground is back in Australia where Samsung has filed a new claim saying Apple's iPhone and iPad infringe upon its Australian patents. In an email to Bloomberg Samsung said that it filed the claim with the Federal Court of Australia. Apple slips mention of 'late 2011' iMac in Thunderbolt docs
Apple in posting its Thunderbolt support details may have inadvertently revealed plans for a second iMac update this year. The document makes reference to a "late 2011" alongside the current mid 2011 edition. The all-in-one isn't referenced anywhere else, but the phrasing makes it clear the reference was deliberate, if not intended to go live so soon.

Developers get a new build of 10.7.2
As 9to5Mac reports, there's a brand new build of Lion 10.7.2 out there in the wild for developers, featuring focused work on iCloud, the Mac App Store, MobileMe, and a few other places like Mail, Spotlight, Time Machine, and even things like the AddressBook and graphics drivers.
This is build 11C57, coming only a few days after the last build, 11C55. We'd like to think that the increasing frequency of releases (along with the fact that there are no known issues in this build) means that a public release is right around the corner, but of course Apple is going to take its time. Mac App Store now warns customers buying pre-installed apps
Macworld points out that Apple has added a new drop-down dialog box to the Mac App Store (above). It alerts customers who are about to purchase an app they've already got installed. While it doesn't fix an ongoing issue, it's at least a nice heads-up.

RIM woes magnify with widespread BlackBerry mail, BBM outage
BlackBerry owners on Friday were dealt more unfortunate news Friday after many reported losing access to Internet services. Both BlackBerry Messenger and e-mail faced outages, primarily in Canada and Latin American countries. RIM was "investigating" as of Friday afternoon but didn't have a cause or an estimated time for a fix.

Obama signs America Invents Act into law, makes patent reform a reality
Patent reform's been bandied about on Capitol Hill for years now, and last week we finally got both houses of Congress to agree on the language to make it happen. Today, in what was a foregone conclusion, President Obama has finally made the thing official by signing the America Invents Act into law. Apple seeds second merged OS X 10.7.2/iCloud build

Apple reveals limits for daisy-chaining Thunderbolt Displays
A new Apple support document reveals restrictions on daisy-chaining the Thunderbolt Display, which is finally shipping to online buyers. Because Thunderbolt supports speeds up to 10Gbps, the obstacle to chaining multiple monitors is less networking than the video hardware in the connected Mac. Apple now shipping Thunderbolt displays
Apple is shipping its new Apple Thunderbolt Displays. The displays were first introduced on July 20 when Apple said they would begin shipping in 60 days. Today AppleInsider reported that some of its readers have been notified that their units have shipped. That shouldn't come as too much as a surprise, however, as just last week the displays were reportedly shipped out to Apple retail stores and resellers.

KCRW app launches music discovery
KCRW is a Los Angeles-based public radio station with a history of introducing new artists to listeners. Keeping with this tradition, the radio station now has an iPad app called Music Mine that'll let you dig deep into their catalog and find new music.

Samsung accuses Apple of violating patents in Australia
Samsung at last responded to Apple's wins in Australia by submitting cross claims of its own. The allegations maintain that Apple is violating seven patents for wireless technology through the iPad and iPhone. The Federal Court movement also hopes to completely overturn Apple's gains and invalidate its patents, including those that led to a preliminary ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Peking University students complain about Apple presence

RePro3D is a 'touchable' 3D interface that lets you poke pixies (video)
The illusion of 3D is kind of ruined the moment you reach out and try and grab whatever silly thing is supposed to be protruding from the screen. Windows 8 store apps to still take 30% cut; Metro iTunes OK
Microsoft in the wake of the Windows 8 unveiling has clarified its stances on apps. Despite claims that Windows Store apps would be free, a check of the developer terms mentioned in the Windows Weekly podcast has reportedly shown that the policy only applies to conventional Windows apps. Ngmoco buys out Facebook game maker Lionside
iOS developer Ngmoco has bought out a San Francisco-based firm, Lionside, reports say. The latter is best known for making Facebook sports games, including NBA Legend, which at one point is said to have had as many as a million players a month. The cost of the acquisition is unknown, but Ngmoco is more likely to take Lionside's properties and convert them into iPhone and iPad games, rather than build new Facebook titles.

Intel's 710 SSDs get announced, bit too rich for the Christmas list (video)
Owning a high-capacity SSD is a bit like having a butler -- it's a lovely option, but so damn expensive. Intel's announcing Lyndonville -- more modestly called the SSD 710, which replaces the less modestly named X25-E Extreme. The enterprise-level SSD's carrying 25-nanometer MLC flash memory and when tested, five of the drives were able to handle the same load as 90 x 15,000 RPM HDDs in Intel's data center. Gogo has unrolled a major upgrade to its in-air Wi-Fi access for 2012. Starting with Virgin America, its ATG-4 spec Wi-Fi promises to quadruple the practical speed, enough to where HD video streaming is an option. We've had plenty of QT with the Vita on the floor at TGS, but battery life is hard to judge when you can't take the device away with you. Back at our earlier hands-on in June we were told that longevity should be on a par with first-gen PSPs, which were all rated at 4-6 hours and -- with the PSP-1000 -- achieved around 3.5-5.5 hours in real-world tests. NYT: iPhone 5 announcement 'just weeks away'
According to Nick Bilton at the New York Times, an unnamed Apple employee has confirmed to him that the next-gen iPhone announcement is "just weeks away." Netbooks take further hit as Cedar Trail moves to 2012
Netbooks may have faced another crucial setback as Intel's Cedar Trail platform was moved back again. Once intended to arrive for end users in the fall, the next-generation Atom platform should now ship to partners in the fall but won't be in end user devices until 2012. Die digitale Universität kommt. Schade nur, dass sie erst mal auf so verschiedene Systeme zurückgreifen muss. In Schulen greift ja der iPad-Wahn um sich, in der Dublin City University hat man aber einen Deal mit Google verkündet, der dafür sorgen soll, dass Erstsemester jetzt mit Chromebooks versorgt werden. Vermutlich integriert sich das gut mit Google Apps die die Universität nutzt und hat obendrein den Vorteil, dass Filesharing nahezu ausgeschlossen werden kann, denn viel Festplatte ist nicht, und einen Torrent-Client als Chrome-App haben wir auch noch nicht gesehen. Multi-Touch finger paintings merge art with tech
Anybody can fingerpaint -- it's pretty much a standard part of kindergarten curriculum -- but artist Evan Roth took it a step farther with his Multi-Touch finger paintings. (Heads-up: some salty language on his site). But Merc isn't actually calling it a concept, rather a "research vehicle" that will help the company work toward a gasoline-free future. SiriusXM app needs updating or old version will stop working
That's a tactic that should get SiriusXM customer's attention. The new version of the SiriusXM app released this week has moved to version 1.6, but the app must be updated or the older version will stop working.
The satellite radio company says the app adds "required location awareness in compliance with new content provider policies". If the app is not updated, the older version will stop working, so to avoid any surprises it would be best to get the new version. In a past update, many SiriusXM apps lost the login information, but this version seems to protect it, so after you get the new one, and it downloads some graphics, you should be good to go.

Qualcomm will Quad-Core-ARM noch Ende des Jahres ausliefern
Wie aus einer internen Qualcomm-Roadmap hervorgeht, wird der Chip-Hersteller bereits zum Jahreswechsel mit der Auslieferung von ARM-basierten Snapdragon-Prozessoren mit vier Kernen beginnen. Die in 28 Nanometer gefertigten Prozessoren sind mit maximal 2,5 GHz getaktet und verfügen über einen Adreno-Grafikeinheit mit ebenfalls bis zu vier Kernen. HD-Videos und aufwendige 3D-Grafik sollen für Smartphones damit keinerlei Problem darstellen.

MasterCard zeigt Google Wallet und QkR App mit neuen Bezahlideen
Timing, wenn es um Geld geht ist alles eine Frage des Timings. PayPal war gestern, heute will MasterCard einen davon überzeugen, dass man mit dem Handy einkaufen muss. Die Google Wallet App, die schon im Mai präsentiert wurde, in der realen Welt aber bislang noch nicht angekommen ist, bekommt von MasterCard jetzt noch mal einen Anschub. NFC bedeutet auch hier, einfaches Antippen der Kasse und schon ist man wieder ein paar Dollar los. Zur Sicherheit bekommt man logischerweise einen Hinweis in der App oder auch SMS und kann seine Ausgaben gleich auch begrenzen. Die Sony Alpha NEX-7 mit ihren 24,3 Megapixeln mit ihrem XGA OLED Bildschirm und 1080p AVCHD Video, hat wirklich das Zeug zu einem DSLR Ersatz. Ihr Preis liegt aber eh in ähnlicher Liga. Report: Apple working on consolidating multiple Apple IDs
Apple is working on a way to merge multiple Apple IDs into a single login, MacRumors is reporting based on a claim from an Apple representative from CEO Tim Cook's office. Users who either accidentally or deliberately have more than one Apple ID have found the issue to be the cause of unexpected hassle, and the coming iOS 5 and iCloud updates will exacerbate the issue. Endlich. Hm. Denken wir noch Mal drüber nach. Skype für Windows spricht schon seit Ewigkeiten mit Facebook, Macs jetzt auch wenn man sich die neue Beta runterlädt. Aber erwartet nicht, dass sich diese kleinen Bildchen und Infos zu euren tausenden von Freunden irgendwie in Sekunden laden würden. Popular VOIP and telephony app Line2 has released a Line2 HD version for the iPad that lets users make or receive calls as well as text-message using Wi-Fi or 3G. New 'subconscious mode' could improve smartphone battery life, supress your WiFi id
Researchers at the University of Michigan have figured out a way to drastically increase your cellphone's battery life, at least while using WiFi. By using what they're calling E-MiLi, or Energy-Minimizing Idle Listening, professor Kang Shin (right) and student Xinyu Zhang have developed a proof of concept that could extend battery life up to 54-percent with the WiFi radio on. Even when idle, a wireless radio is actively checking for incoming traffic. E-MiLi scales back the wireless card's clock to just 1/16th of its normal operating speed, and only kicks back into full gear when it senses incoming data. LG now seen with job cuts, reorg at home to rescue mobile
Despite recent denials of job cuts abroad, LG is now believed to be reshuffling its mobile group at home in Korea. Sources claimed late Thursday that, as part of a restructuring, it would cut down on its mobile marketing teams. 360iDev: Getting ready for apps on the Apple TV
Developer Michael Gile took the stage at 360iDev in Denver to talk about the next generation of iOS development: Apple TV app development. Apple hasn't officially released or even announced iOS apps on the Apple TV yet, but that hasn't stopped Gile and a community of jailbreakers from diving in and getting code running on it anyway. Gile started his speech with a prediction: "Apple TV 2 will be the biggest game console in history," he said. Apple wins settlement in Queens counterfeiting case
Two stores in the Chinatown section of Flushing, Queens, New York have agreed to hand over to Apple a raft of counterfeit merchandise, promotional materials, records pertaining to the procurement of the counterfeit Apple products and change the name of one of the stores to prevent consumer confusion. The resolution settles a lawsuit filed in July that saw the iPhone maker accuse the two stores of selling unauthorized accessories for iOS devices.

TSMC deal with Apple said to last through 20nm A7 chips
More details of TSMC's deal with Apple have emerged that suggest it will at least be a two-generation pact. Insiders reported late Thursday that it would include both the 28 nanometer process chips widely reported as well as a smaller-still 20 nanometer process. Google faced a major setback to its defense against Oracle's lawsuit over Java in Android after Judge William Alsup tossed out most of Google's motions to dismiss parts of the case. iPhone mobile game publisher Ngmoco has confirmed that it has acquired Lionside, the San Fransisco-based maker of social networking sports games on Facebook. Ngmoco is the maker of over 20 popular iPhone games, including Rolando and Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid.
There's no word on how much the acquisition cost the iPhone game maker, but a Ngmoco spokesperson did confirm to InsideMobileApps that it did indeed acquire Lionside. Apple proposes settlement with Queens-area knockoff stores
Reuters reports that two Apple-knockoff stores located in the Queens borough of New York City have been offered a settlement agreement, currently under judicial review. Apple's proposed settlement mandates that the stores hand over all products bearing Apple's trademarks and branding; one store called Apple Story has also agreed to change its name to something a bit less infringing.
