Google+ für iPhone: nüchtern, solide, gut
Noch ist uns ehrlich gesagt der Mehrwert von Google+ gegenüber Facebook nicht ganz klar. Aber keine Frage: Die Marktmacht und die Entwicklungskapazitäten des Suchmaschinenherstellers werden dafür sorgen, dass Google+ ein Facebook-Konkurrent wird. Die Browser-Anwendung von Google+ ist jedenfalls schon ganz ordentlich. Das Gleiche lässt sich auch von der heute im App Store gelandeten iPhone-App (kostenlos, App Store-Link) sagen. mehr

Lion launching tomorrow, Apple confirms
As part of its fiscal Q3 financial results call with analysts, CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirmed that Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") will debut tomorrow, July 20th. The company will make the upgrade available for $30 through its own Mac App Store, marking the first time it has offered download-only software for a system upgrade. Images of the OS will be used in Apple's retail stores to assist customers who would prefer not to download the 4GB file on their home connections.

Apple blows past BlackBerry with 20.34m iPhones, 9.25m iPads
Apple as part of its spring results saw its mobile device sales grow even further in a possibly significant blow to RIM and smaller rivals. It shipped 20.34 million iPhones, a nearly ten percent gain from the winter and 142 percent compared to a year earlier. A full quarter of Verizon iPhone sales, along with a kick from the white iPhone, have been credited for the gain in a period when iPhone sales usually drop and when no new model was imminent.

Apple stock surges past $400 in after-hours trading
Apple stock has surged past $400 per share in after-hours trading, gaining over six percent in additional value after the company announced yet another "best quarter ever" shortly after the markets closed for the day. Shares had already gained $3 to reach $376 earlier in the day, following a number of positive analyst forecasts ahead of the company's quarterly financial disclosures.

Mac OS X Lion launches July 20
Just confirmed from the earnings call: OS X Lion will launch tomorrow, July 20. This was an unusual way to announce the launch, but it confirms the week's rumors.
Lion will be available exclusively via the Mac App Store. There's no word yet whether it will be a rolling international launch across time zones (beginning in New Zealand and ending in Hawaii) or if the launch will occur simultaneously worldwide. Of note, it is already July 20 on half of Earth, but Lion is still not available.

Apple: Mac OS X Lion to hit the App Store tomorrow
Well it looks like the cat's finally out of the bag virtual box. Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer just confirmed during its earnings call that Mac OS 10.7 is due to hit the Mac App Store tomorrow, making Lion available as a 4GB download for $30. The new operating system packs 250 new features, including an iOS-like app launcher, multi-touch gestures, AirDrop for direct file sharing, and system-wide Resume. More enhancements that will feel particularly familiar to iOS users include a new version of Mail with conversation view, and reverse touchpad scrolling. We're here at Sprint's monolithic campus in Overland Park, and part of our day was spent speaking directly with CEO Dan Hesse. Amongst other things, the bigwig confessed that it had been awhile since his company (or Clearwire) had launched a 4G market. While Verizon Wireless has been pushing out LTE to new cities on what feels like a fortnightly basis, there's been nary a WiMAX deployment in the US during 2011. Apple posts $28.57 billion in revenue in record Q3
Apple has officially announced the results of its third fiscal quarter, which ended on June 25th. The company posted a record quarterly revenue of $28.57 billion, with an equally record-setting net profit of $7.31 billion, or $7.79 per diluted share. The numbers are compared against Q3 2010's $15.7 billion in revenue and $3.25 billion in profit. "Weíre thrilled to deliver our best quarter ever, with revenue up 82 percent and profits up 125 percent," reads a prepared statement from Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple Q3 2011 earnings released: Impressive, most impressive. (Updated)
Apple hit another home run in the third quarter of 2011. Total revenue for the quarter reached US$28.57 billion, as compared to $15.70 billion in the same quarter last year. Earnings per diluted share were $7.79, as compared to $3.51 last year. Net profit reached a staggering $7.31 B. All of these figures crushed the professional analyst estimates and even surpassed some of the more optimistic amateur AAPL watchers, as tracked by Phil Elmer-Dewitt.

If you've been waiting for Apple's earnings to come in shy of analyst estimates, you're about to be disappointed yet again. Cupertino just reported its best quarter ever, with earnings of $7.79 per share, revenue totaling $28.57 billion, and a net profit of $7.31 billion. We know you're probably more interested in sales figures, however, and as you might expect, Apple's continued to ship iPhones and iPads at a steady pace, with 20.34 million smartphones and 9.25 million tablets sold last quarter. Heute Abend nach Börsenschluss in New York veröffentlichte Apple den Geschäftsbericht (englische Medienmitteilung) für das dritte Fiskalquartal 2011. In der Zeitspanne zwischen April und Juni 2011 verbuchte Apple Einnahmen in der Höhe von 28.57 Milliarden Dollar (plus 82 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal). Der Gewinn stieg auf 7.31 Milliarden (7.79 US-Dollar pro Aktie, plus 125 Prozent). Apple verkaufte 3’947’000 Mac-Computer (plus 14 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahresquartal), 9’246’000 iPads (plus 183 Prozent), 20’338’000 iPhones (plus 142 Prozent) und 7’535’000 iPods (minus 20 Prozent). Apple's board discussing eventual Steve Jobs successor
According to The Wall Street Journal, some of Apple's board members have been informally discussing an eventual successor to Steve Jobs since the CEO began his latest medical leave earlier this year. 'End of life' for white plastic MacBook arriving in August?
Apple could be planning to discontinue the white plastic MacBook in August or shortly thereafter, claims Concord Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple board looks for CEO successor, Jobs says 'hogwash'
Part of Apple's board of directors has been actively talking to recruiters about long-term exploration of a successor to CEO Steve Jobs, insiders revealed Tuesday. While not an official move from the board, they were considering options and at one point had even talked to the CEO of a "high-profile technology company." Speculation: Apple website hints at iWork update for Lion
While working on a post about OS X Lion's full-screen apps, I stumbled upon something interesting. If you look at the image above, it shows Pages as a full-screen app. There's even a tag line -- "Never miss the fine print with full-screen for Pages." I'm running Pages version 4.0.5 (852) right now, and there hasn't been an update for a while. This version doesn't run in full-screen mode under the Lion GM.
It makes sense that Apple would update Pages, Keynote, and Numbers to take advantage of a

Isis gets major credit cards for NFC mobile payments
Isis on Tuesday said it had landed the top four credit card companies in the US for its mobile payment plans. American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa have all agreed to handle payments from NFC-based phones when the service goes live in the first six months of 2012. Briefly: Sparrow v1.3 update, Sleeve2 comes to Apple Stores
An updated version of Sparrow, a minimalistic mail client for the Mac, has been released in the Mac App Store. Version 1.3 brings full support for OS X Lion and adds several new features designed to simplify mail accounts. Dragging the sidebar to the left side of the window will now present users with an extend side bar that provides quick access to all labels and folders. Google's Eric Schmidt claims Apple litigates, doesnt innovate
Google's Eric Schmidt spoke at a mobile conference in Tokyo and addressed HTC's early loss to Apple in a patent infringement case. Schmidt believes HTC will prevail and is "not too worried about this" case. He also added that Google will "make sure" HTC does not lose this case.
Schmidt didn't say how Google would support the Taiwanese handset maker, but cash and legal counsel are the two obvious contributions. His response also suggests this umbrella of protection would extend to any manufacturer facing litigation over Android.

Judge Lucy Koh handed Apple a setback Tuesday by denying it an attempt at an early decision on a Samsung product ban. Lion recovery mode allows reinstalls via Internet
OS X Lion has a special recovery mode which includes the option to reinstall the OS over the Internet, an internal AppleCare document reveals. The mode is invoked by holding down Command-R during boot, and presents users with several options. On a basic level it lets people access online help, or run Disk Utility to scan, repair, partition or even erase volumes. Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt in a speech at his company's Mobile Revolution conference in Tokyo claimed that lawsuits and trade disputes from Apple and Microsoft were just the result of jealousy. ITC rules for Kodak in Apple patent infringement complaint
The ITC handed down its final judgment in a patent infringement case Apple filed against Kodak. In a setback for Apple, the panel let the initial decision stand and ruled in favor of Kodak.
On May 12, ITC Judge Robert Rogers found one of Apple's patents was invalid and that Kodak did not violate the other two cited in the complaint. This is a good one. To-Fu: The Trials of Chi is what's probably best described as a physics platformer, where you play, yes, a little piece of tofu. This To-Fu is much spicier than the actual thing, however -- you tap and drag on him to jump around a series of levels, and his jumps always go basically gravity-free in the same direction, so eventually you're bouncing off of walls, judging angles, and avoiding spikes and other dangers while bouncing from platform to platform.
It's actually a pretty big challenge, but that's tempered a little bit by the fact that your basic goal is just getting through the level. Samsung distances itself from Anymode Smart Case
Samsung has taken the unusual step of issuing a statement in response to the launch of a third-party iPad Smart Cover rip-off made specifically for its Galaxy Tab 10.1. Apple: Gute Quartalszahlen erwartet
Heute Abend um 22:30 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Sommerzeit wird Apple den Geschäftsbericht für das dritte Fiskalquartal 2011 (April bis Juni) veröffentlichen. Analysten gehen von einem weiteren äusserst starken Quartal aus. iPad 3 mit höherer Auflösung?
Wie die Tageszeitung The Korea Times berichtet, testet Apple mit seinen Technologiepartnern Samsung und LG neue Displays für das iPad 3. Apple hat die Anforderungen für den Bildschirm im Vergleich zum jetzigen Modell stark erhöht: so soll die Auflösung wie schon früher berichtet deutlich vergrössert werden, nämlich auf 2048 mal 1538 Pixel und die Unterstützung von HD Videos wird vorausgesetzt. Ausserdem soll die Pixeldichte auf mehr als 280 Pixel pro Zoll vergrössert werden. Zum Vergleich: das Retina-Display beim iPhone 4 bietet eine Pixeldichte von 326 Pixel pro Zoll.

So langsam können wir die Vorraussagen in Sachen MacBook Air auch nicht mehr hören, aber jetzt scheint es wirklich so weit zu sein: zusammen mit Lion, das laut Macrumors, AppleInsider und anderen bereits an die Apple Shops ausgeliefert wurde um die MacBook Airs damit zu bestücken. Die sollen wiederum mit 4 GB Standard und 128 GB SSD als Minimalausstattung, Thunderbolt und der zurückgekehrten Tastaturbeleuchtung kommen. Mac OS X Lion steht vor der Tür
«Lion», die nächste grosse Version des Mac-Betriebsystems Mac OS X ist nahe an seiner Marktlancierung: Mehrere Quellen — u.a. von AppleInsider — sehen ein Release des Löwen noch in dieser Woche. Im speziellen wurde der morgige Mittwoch als Erscheinungstag von Mac OS X 10.7 genannt.

Lion erreicht die Retail Stores

OS X Lion rumors: Do we want to believe 'em or not?
I don't know if you've noticed a trend, but at TUAW we've been trying to downplay a lot of the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion / MacBook Air refresh rumors that have been flooding a lot of other sites lately. The occasional one squeaks in, but for the most part we're trying to stay away from the daily "IT'S COMING TOMORROW!!!!" posts that have been so common over the last few weeks on some other Apple sites.
Why? Frankly, it's because we're bored to death by the same rumors that have been coming out day after day after day. Not to say that we're not wondering ourselves about Lion and those new MacBook Airs, but let's face it: is it really necessary to post rumors every day?

Star Wars Blu-Ray extras revealed through iOS app
Two months ahead of the formal release of the six-part Star Wars saga on Blu-Ray, a "sneak peek" app has previews of some of the 40-plus hours of bonus features and footage, and will be available for download from the iTunes App Store on Wednesday, July 20th, Engadget reports. The bonus material will include never-before-seen content from the Lucasfilm archives, and new interviews with the cast and crew.

Sony offers dual-USB bus-powered slim optical superdrive
Sony Optiarc America has brought out the DRX-S90U bus-powered USB2 slim portable DVD superdrive as a supplement to notebooks, netbooks and desktop computers. The unit can burn dual-layer DVD+R at 8x, regular DVD+R and RW media at 6x and CD-R and RW at 24x speeds (it can also handle DVD-RAM at 5x). The unit requires two USB2 ports to power the burning speeds, and works with both Windows (XP and higher) and Mac operating systems.

Apple's win against HTC driving some firms to Windows Phone
Apple's early win against HTC has sent some Chinese phone makers running to Windows Phone 7, a source said. Mainland Chinese paper 21st Century Business Herald understood that local companies were adding or improving their support for Windows Phone and would use the new Mango build alongside or in place of Android. Huawei and ZTE were already planning to add WP7 devices, although for them it was to diversify their lines more than a defensive strategy.

iPad Smart Cover clone for Galaxy Tab gets Samsung blessing
Korean company Anymode has produced a blatant copy of the iPad 2's Smart Cover for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. While it can't use magnets to wake the tablet like Apple's device, the Smart Case is otherwise a one-for-one imitation, complete with the folding, four-segment design and even five of the same colors. Its only difference is a basic shell to cover the Android tablet's back.

AAPL hits all-time record high
Perhaps because of optimistic analysis going into tomorrow's conference call, Apple's stock price has hit an all-time high today. While the Dow Jones average was down overall, AAPL rose $6 at one point, hitting $371.06 as a high. That's huge -- bigger a stock price than it's ever been before.

OmniPlan 2.0 project management app adds collaboration focus
The Omni Group is launching an update to its project management software, OmniPlan 2.0 today. The update adds collaboration capabilities, allowing managers to create and share projects with a team, and syncing over MobileMe, Omni Sync Server or a WebDAV server. Other added features include support for fiscal calendar years for scheduling according to business protocols, the ability to save filters for re-use in later projects, and new printing customizations, like flexible headers and footers and more margin control.

Apple aims at Chengdu, China stores, Californian reno
Apple has negotiated leases on two possible store locations in Chengdu, China, claims SinoCast Daily Business Beat. The first is at The MIXC, a development with retail and office space opening east of the city core next year. It should ultimately incorporate some residential space, including a hotel. ITC upholds view Kodak didn't infringe Apple patents
The US International Trade Commission on Monday upheld an earlier ruling that said Kodak didn't violate Apple patents. Officials reached the decision sooner than the original September 19 deadline. Details of the ruling were still forthcoming but rejected the idea that Kodak's camera and imaging technology borrowed from Apple.

Beliefs Apple will release Lion this week grew Monday night after scoops both at MacRumors and our own sources that stores were getting Lion installs. NPD data may point to 4.2 million Macs during Apple Q3
NPD's calculated US sales figures for the June quarter suggest total Mac sales between 4 and 4.2 million units, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. US numbers are reported to be up 12 percent year-over-year. The figure compares against a Street consensus for worldwide sales, estimating an increase between 15 and 22 percent.

NPD suggests Apple had another record Mac quarter
A new report from NPD says that Apple has probably done it again, racking up yet another quarter of record Mac sales. NPD puts the number of Macs sold at 4.2 million, which would be a year-over-year gain of 12%, and make for the best record Apple's Mac sales have ever had.
US Mac sales in general are down, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, but since the reasons for that are the impending Lion release, as well as a possible new version of the MacBook Air coming sometime this month, he expects sales to rebound as soon as both of those things actually happen.
In short, though these are still preliminary figures, it's looking like Apple will have a solid June quarter here, and M
