Siemens creating portable sensor to warn about asthma attacks, breathe deeply until it ships
We all wheeze a little from time to time, at least we do when we've fallen off the fitness wagon and are trying desperately to climb back on. For some it's a little more serious than that, and for those prone to dangerous bouts of asthma Siemens AG has a bit of hope. It's developed a portable sensor that can detect minute increases of nitric oxide in a patient's breath, particles that serve as a sign of an impending asthma attack. BGR: Verizon iPhone sales not burning hot
Boy Genius Report did a little digging around to find some concrete numbers for Verizon iPhone sales, and while these probably aren't wholly representative of the larger picture, they did release numbers purporting to be from five different Apple stores of the sales of iPhones on both AT&T and Verizon. You can see the day-to-day-breakdown on BGR, but the totals are a little surprising. Over the five-day period, Apple sold 3,009 iPhones with AT&T service, and 3,992 with Verizon service. Obviously, the Verizon iPhones are selling better, but when you consider that this is the first few days of the phones on sale (and the expectations

Capcom denies rift with Apple over Smurfs' Village in-app purchases
Did Apple take Capcom to task over the in-app purchase fiasco in the company's Smurfs' Village game for iOS? That was the rumor going around earlier today, after Pocket Gamer reported that it had heard from a "well placed source" who said that Apple had some "strong words" for the game maker. Capcom has now come out and denied any such rift, however, saying in a statement that "we are in frequent communication with Apple, and at no point have they expressed any displeasure to any representatives of Capcom Mobile in regards to our handling of in-app purchases within Smurfs' Vill

Budget model could raise iPhone revenue ceiling by 2.5X
The rumored budget iPhone model could fix an Apple blindside, argues Bernstein Research's Toni Sacconaghi. The analyst estimates that Apple could increase its addressable phone market by six times, and potential revenue by as much as two and a half times. The company is limiting itself with its current strategy, which means the iPhone sells at high cost through select carriers, says Sacconaghi.

Windows Phone 7 camera settings keep going to default, Microsoft says it was 'a decision by the team'
"It's not a bug, it's a feature" is one of the time-honored mantras of computer engineering, and Microsoft is using it to full effect with a behavior occasionally cursed by users of Windows Phone 7 devices: the camera settings return to their defaults every time you load the camera app. Responding to a comment in the official Windows Phone Blog, a Microsoft rep says that the settings reset was actually "a decision by the team," noting that if you need to pull out your phone for a quick shot, you'd rather not have to fiddle with whatever wacky settings you had set up on the prior use. Apple expected to have strong Q1 2011 shipments despite Intel's glitch
Intel recently had a kerfuffle with its upcoming chipset lines, finding a defect in the 6 series and causing production of certain models to be delayed by as much as a few months. But if you're waiting to buy a brand new MacBook Pro, don't worry -- because Apple is careful about when it upgrades its hardware, Digitimes says that shipments of new laptops designed in Cupertino won't be delayed at all. The delay may affect other brands, simply because they play their profit margins a little closer to the bottom line, but because Apple's prices already have so much profit built into them, it won't have a problem even if it is affected by delays.

New York City turns to sewers for energy solutions
Listen up New Yorkers, those hot nuts you just swallowed could be used to light the signs on Broadway. Okay, so that's a stretch, but the city's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) just issued a plan to turn the stuff you flush, along with rest of its wastewater, into renewable energy. New York City produces about 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater daily, yielding 1,200 tons of biosolids that can be harvested to procure methane -- already accounting for 20 percent of the city's energy -- and butanol, a clean gasoline alternative. Android tablets bring touchscreen connectivity to Indian bus riders -- still no $35 slates in sight (video)
That's right, that little green blob in the upper left hand corner of that built-in touchscreen is indeed the Android logo, and that display does indeed belong to a tablet of unknown origin, currently riding around on the back of a headrest on a bus somewhere in India. MobileMe may clone Ustream, Foursquare, Facebook Places
Apple's future plans for MobileMe could involve more than just the media locker, a source rumored on Wednesday. The company would center it on a unified profile page that would merge social networks with media services. Among the plans caught by Cult of Mac would be status updates, including Foursquare-style location check-ins; it would not only host photos and videos but even offer live video streaming like Ustream or Qik.

SmartLab's Recon 6.0 Programmable Rover is an interesting little toy-gadget we found while perusing the floor at the International Toy Fair. Designed as a teaching tool for basic programming skills, this little bot comes with an owner's manual that'll teach your little tyke basic programming concepts in an easy-to-use package. All coding is done right on the front panel itself using easy-to-understand arrows and symbols, and you can make it do things like deliver sodas, guard a bedroom, or recite pre-recorded messages to unknowing family members or pets. Apple outlines differences between CDMA and GSM phones
Apple detailed the differences between the GSM and CDMA iPhone when it comes to voice calling and its associated features. The document confirms the Verizon iPhone is unable to hold a conference call with more than two attendees as well as put a call on hold. The Verizon iPhone can also use a manual method to toggle call forwarding, call waiting and caller ID instead of using the settings within iOS. Though not earth shattering, these shortcuts and, in certain cases, limitations may be helpful for folks with either version of the iPhone.

Review: Photo Delight for iPad
MacNN has reviewed Photo Delight for iPad, an app that restores colors to photos it converts to black and white, creating a "splash of color" effect. Restoring colors in a working image is done with finger gestures. The app supports unlimited undos and redos, and an eraser tool can be used to make fine repairs. Brush sizes, hardness/softness and opacity can adjusted as necessary.

Nokia Plan B was just a hoax all along
There's been a lot of chatter about a "Nokia Plan B" over the past 48 hours -- the site was put up by "nine young investors" who outlined an audacious plan to rally shareholders, get themselves elected onto Nokia's board, and radically change the company's direction by firing Stephen Elop and committing massive resources to MeeGo. Needless to say, it resonated with many of Nokia's now disenfranchised fans and employees, and it made some serious waves -- enough so that Plan B was picked up by several major news outlets, including this morning's print edition of the Wall Street Journal.

Review: Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300
MacNN has reviewed the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300, a semi-portable, sheet-fed document scanner. It can scan up to 600 dpi and do duplex color scanning, with automatic document feeds and page size detection. It also corrects skewed paper feeds and can output to PDF or JPG. Warner Brothers sells movies as apps, skirts iTunes
In an interesting move, Warner Brothers has released two movies as apps -- including extras -- semi-skirting the iTunes Store. The idea is to offer movies to customers who live in countries without movie sales via iTunes. Of course, Apple still gets the 30% cut of the in-app purchase cost.
Interestingly, this technique goes directly against one of the clauses in Apple's current App Store guidelines, 2.21: "Apps that are simply a song or movie should be submitted to the iTunes store. Apps that are simply a book should be submitted to the iBookstore." Apparently not all apps-as-movies are created equal.

Desk Pets TankBot hands-on (video)
Although we've only gotten a glimpse of a TankBot as a render, we were more than interested to see this robot toy doing its thing in the real world. We spotted these tiny desk pals at the International Toy Fair and got to take a look at some working prototypes. As we reported earlier, the TankBots have three functioning modes -- autonomous, maze solving and iOS controlled. The bots feature LED eyes and two infrared transmitters -- that's how it solves the mazes. Charging is done by plugging in the USB dongle found on the rear of the tank and you'll get 15 minutes of battery life after a 30 minute charge. News: Verizon iPhone sales slower than expected?
Sales of the Verizon iPhone have been slower than what Apple and Verizon expected, according to a new report. AT&T chief wants cross-platform mobile app sales
AT&T chief Randall Stephenson in an event at Mobile World Congress on Tuesday called for a system that let users keep app ownership across platforms. He argued it was frustrating that buying an app on one platform didn't give you the rights to the app on another. He saw solutions such as the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) or HTML5 as being better models, although few phones actually support WAC or use HTML5 in a major way for apps.

AT&T CEO says App Store is bad for consumers
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson must be eating some sour grapes since his company lost its exclusive hold on the US iPhone market. During a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Stephenson said that platform-specific app stores like the ones run by Apple and Google are "bad for consumers," as they require a customer to purchase an app multiple times if they want to run it on different platforms.

Confirmed: Samsung will launch an 11.6-inch 9 Series laptop
We had a feeling the 11.6-inch version of Samsung's 9 Series laptop was the real deal when it popped up on Provantange's site yesterday, and the company just confirmed for us that it does in fact have a smaller model waiting in the wings. Sadly, our Samsung contact wouldn't confirm anything on the pricing front, but he did tell us that it will be available with a Core i3 processor. We didn't get any information on that rather interesting listed USB 3.0 port, either. Sure, we've still got a few question marks here, but hey, at least we know it's real.

Sony releases statement on PS3 hacking, surprisingly comes out against it
In the wake of recent developments in Sony's war on Geohot, the company has released an "Official Statement Regarding PS3 Circumvention Devices and Pirated Software," which reads, in part:
Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.
To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

Rdio music service iPhone app updated, gives better offline controls
The social music discovery service Rdio has gotten an iPhone facelift; the company's app has a bunch of new features in version 1.0 (released today), including a key improvement for users who sync their music from Rdio down to their phones for offline access.
Much like Apple's Ping social layer for iTunes, Rdio gives music recommendations and listings based on what your friends like to listen to -- but it also gives you direct access to the music, letting you play it on the company's website or on your mobile device.

Borders files for bankruptcy, plans to keep operating but close 30 percent of its stores
We heard the news was coming, and now it's official -- Borders, the second-biggest bookstore chain the U.S., has filed for bankruptcy. As expected, the company will continue to operate while it restructures, but it will hardly be the same company it once was. It's being forced to close around 200 (or 30 percent) of its stores, and it may need to close another 75 if it's not able to gain some concessions from landlords, according to Bloomberg. This is news on Engadget, of course, because Borders has also been trying to compete with Amazon

Twitter adds inline App Store previews
Social networking site Twitter is now hosting inline previews of iOS App Store links. The site has offered inline previews of images and YouTube videos for some time, reducing the need to launch a separate program or browser tab. Well, that's just Smurfy! Apple reportedly talks to Capcom about Smurfs' Village
We reported last week on how kids playing with the Smurfs' Village iOS app was racking up hundreds of dollars in charges, prompting a variety of responses regarding how Apple and parents should treat such apps. Now PocketGamer.biz is reporting that Apple has taken game publisher Capcom to task for making it so easy for kids to go on a Smurfberry-buying binge. Intel's Otellini insists company is committed to MeeGo, says he 'understood' why Nokia moved to Microsoft
We've already seen some evidence that Intel was still pushing strongly ahead with MeeGo despite Nokia's deal with Microsoft, and now CEO Paul Otellini has chimed in on the matter to reassure folks that the company is still committed to the mobile OS. Orange not happy about closed system from Nokia-Microsoft
European cell carrier Orange said on Wednesday that it disapproved of what it calls a closed mobile system from the recent Nokia-Microsoft tie-up. Chief marketer Jean-Paul Cottet said providers prefer to offer open systems that give its customers choice. They have a say in the popularity of phones as they choose how much to subsidize them.

Everyone's other favorite spinoff from the XBMC family tree has some major news this week, as Plex has released a Media Center app for Android that mirrors most of the functions already available for iOS devices. Verizon iPhone sales below expectations, still outpace AT&T
Verizon's iPhone 4 launch was slightly disappointing but still outsold AT&T's model, according to leaked sales data. The overall sales are reportedly a "little under" predictions but, during the first five days, consistently outsold AT&T at five different retail stores. The information supplied to BGR showed "very prominent" Apple stores cooling down to between 660 and almost 796 a day a few days later, but AT&T stores at these areas usually sold roughly 100 fewer phones, with the gap sometimes wider.

Demolition underway on Jobs' Woodside mansion
The demolition of Jackling House -- a Woodside, California mansion owned by Apple CEO Steve Jobs -- is well underway, says local newspaper The Almanac. Efforts are reported to have begun on February 14th, and are expected to take about two weeks to finish. The house is already effectively flattened, a source connected to the demolition claims.

Intel ad: Is this the new MacBook Pro? We don't think so
The Maciverse is all a-twitter this morning with speculation that an Intel promo photo is showing off the next-generation MacBook Pro. As you can see in the photo at right, there's a very thin laptop powered by the new Intel Sandy Bridge processor.
We reported about a month ago that Spanish Mac site FAQ-Mac.com had found an Intel promo showing an alleged Core i5 MacBook Pro that was to be given away. Somehow, people seem to be comparing that photo with the laptop seen in today's advertisement.
Most likely, this is just a lot of breathless anticipation by a lot of MacBook Pro owners who wish their computer was as thin and sexy as a Mac

Warner launches Inception, The Dark Knight in app form
Warner Bros. has taken the unusual step of launching "App Editions" of some its movies. The only titles on the App Store so far are Inception and The Dark Knight, but each is a universal app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and presents the option of either downloading the movie or streaming it over Wi-Fi or 3G. Motorola Xoom price official: $799 unsubsidized on Verizon, $600 for WiFi-only
There you have it, folks -- the exhausting saga of the Xoom's pricing has finally been laid to rest by Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha. Reuters reports a $799 levy for the 32GB Honeycomb tablet when bought with 3G (which will be upgraded to 4G) connectivity, while Jha has said a WiFi-only version will set buyers back only $600 -- that's a price that matches the 32GB iPad directly, however the 3G version is $70 more epensive than the Apple alternative. In all the Microkia hub-bub of late, as the best of Redmond and the pride of Tampere hold hands and blaze a trail to smartphone domination, the word "Zune" never once came up. Google One Pass gives publishers open e-book pricing
Google provided a possible out for publishers critical of iTunes subscription rules today by introducing One Pass at a Berlin event today. The subscription system gives readers a single sign-on to get access to digital magazines and newspapers while also deliberately loosening the restrictions on publishers. Unlike on Apple's store, publishers will still have the option of giving away free digital access with print subscriptions or using more varied options like metered access and "freemium" where the content is a mix of both free and paid.

iPad helps push Apple past HP to be top portable 'PC' maker
Apple may have wrested the top spot from HP in portable computing if its surging iPad sales are factored in, DisplaySearch said in an estimate. The combination of the tablet and Macs saw Apple ship 10.2 million portables of some kind in the fall to claim 17.2 percent of the market. Samsung Captivate on AT&T gets Android 2.2, all that Froyo hasn't melted yet
It took about two months for Samsung to roll out the much-needed GPS fix for the Captivate, and now, a mere seven months after Google pulled a handle on the machine and twirled up a big cone of Froyo, that phone is finally getting a spoonful. Google may introduce a new in-app purchasing system to compete with Apple's controversial model. Similar to Apple, the Google system would let users purchase upgrades and other content within an application using Android's built-in payment system. Der Designer Vil Tsimenzin spinnt die universelle Funktionalität aktueller Smartphons/Tablets konsequent weiter und erfindet damit eine neue Geräteklasse namens "Practical Apps Optimization Enabled Devices", die auch Hardware-seitig multifunktional werden. Konkret hat Tsimenzin dazu die PRAX-Serie entworfen, in der das Tablet auch zur Kochplatte wird oder das Handy als Mixer bzw. Bohrer fungiert. Das ist SciFi nach unserem Geschmack!

Analyst: iPhone mini could increase Apple's market reach by 6X, revenue 2.5X
Analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research predicts Apple could increase its addressable handset market by 6X in unit volume and 2.5X in revenue with the launch of a smaller, less expensive iPhone model, says Forbes. These projected numbers come from his analysis of handset market share and Apple's current market reach. Sony finally entering tablets with 9.4in, Android 3.0 model
A major leak on Wednesday has unearthed Sony's plans to finally join the mobile tablet space. So far only called the S1, the 9.4-inch tablet would run a customized version of Android 3.0. The device spotted by Engadget would be focused heavily on Sony's Qriocity media service and would come with games from the PS1 era likely using PlayStation Suite, the Bravia remote app and some form of PlayStation integration.

Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac OS now in the App Store
Finally out of beta, Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac is now available in the Mac App Store. The app lets those with a Windows Phone or a Zune HD and a Mac (an odd mix indeed) move photos, music and video between their devices and Macs running iTunes and iPhoto. Also, Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac can be used to update your Windows phone.
Note that, when syncing music, only unprotected (non DRM) tracks are supported. The app is free and, like we said, available right now.

Rapider Preissturz bei AMDs Radeon HD 6870
Als Reaktion auf den Launch von Nvidias gelungener GeForce GTX 560 Ti hatte AMD Ende Januar die Radeon HD 6950 mit halbiertem Speicher (ComputerBase-Test) gebracht sowie den Preis der HD 6870 auf 190 Euro gesenkt. MacBook Pro refresh to land in March with new product enhancements
Another report suggests Apple's MacBook Pro refresh will land in early March. This latest leak from AppleInsider claims volume production is underway, and assembled units will begin shipping the first week of March. The source of this information also hints that the MacBook Pro will see new product enhancements besides the Sandy Bridge processor. Details on which aspects of the notebook will see an upgrade were not provided, but we could easily see some of the popular features of the MacBook Air, such as a standard SSD drive or instant-on capability, coming to the MacBook Pro line.

Japanische Schulkinder haben es einfach besser: Statt eines umweltbewegten Strickpulliträgers kriegen sie ihre Lektionen in Sachen Umwelt und Recycling von einem netten Oldschool-Roboter namens RURO vermittelt. Der 60 cm große RURO wurde jedenfalls gerade auf der "Yao Robot Fair 2011" in Osaka vorgestellt, ob er wirklich zum Einsatz in Schulen kommt, bleibt also noch abzuwarten. Exclusive: Sony 'S1' brings Qriocity to 9.4-inch Honeycomb tablet
Think for a second, what major consumer electronics company doesn't have a tablet to show? Right, Sony. In fact, the rumor womb has been conspicuously barren of salacious Sony tablet tattle ever since Apple's iPad was announced back in 2010. Oh sure, Sony's owned-up to the development of prototypes that fill a "very important position" somewhere in between its own Vaio PC lineup and the Xperia Play byproduct of its Ericsson commingling. But beyond that: zilch, nada until today.

Nokia shareholders fail in attempt to revive MeeGo, Symbian
An attempt by Nokia shareholders to revolt against the switch to Windows Phone 7 died quickly on Wednesday. The project, Nokia Plan B, said a call on shareholders to vote against the board at Nokia's May 3 shareholder meeting had failed. NEC uses active noise cancellation for quieter zooming into your future memories
NEC just injected a little Bose up in some digital cameras, adding what it calls "noise suppression technologies" to Casio's new EX-ZR10 and promising that it will be deployed "throughout the digital camera and video camera markets" soon. AT&T expects 4G voice a year later than Verizon
AT&T in a talk on Tuesday said it too would have 4G voice calling. CTO John Donovan anticipated his carrier supporting the official Voice over LTE (VoLTE) standard in 2013, or about a year after Verizon. We've been hearing rumors of a Motorola Droid X 2 for a few days now from The Mobi Zone, complete with specs and pictures (above). Supposedly, it's the successor to the Droid X, with a similar appearance, Android 2.2 with MOTOBLUR, and the same 8 megapixel camera. iPad overheating lawsuit tossed
A lawsuit filed by three plaintiffs in US District Court last July alleging that they were "duped" into buying iPads that overheat "too easily" and that Apple claimed that reading on one was "just like reading a book" has been thrown out for lack of specificity, a ruling by Judge Jeremy D. Fogel revealed. Watson soundly beats the humans in first round of Jeopardy
Well, there's one more round of Jeopardy to go, but the round that began yesterday and ended today was a major win for the silicon contingent. After starting the day tied with Brad, Watson barely let his opponents get in a word edgewise during Double Jeopardy, and broke the $36k mark before Final Jeopardy. Both Brad and Ken were able to double up on the Final Jeopardy question, at which Watson failed miserably, but he appended his answer (Toronto) with plenty of question marks, and bet less than a grand. The final result was Watson at $35,754, Brad at $10,000, and Ken Jennings with $4,800. This round's scores will be added to the scores of tomorrow's round to determine the overall winne

AT&T airs new ad for iPhone 3GS

LG Optimus 3D's OMAP 4 benchmarked, pulls ahead of Exynos and Tegra 2
Which dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 system-on-a-chip rules the roost? It's probably too early to tell, but if you're looking for a preliminary verdict, AnandTech has benchmarked all three of them now. Kindle for iOS updated, adds page numbers and progress meters
The Kindle app for iOS (my personal reading app of choice) got a nice update yesterday that brings "real" page numbers into the app. Now, as you read along in some ebooks, you'll get to see where you'd be in the printed version, so if you're reading Kindle books along with a class or book club, you can find the same pages you're all reading together. The update also adds information on the homescreen that shows your progress through the books on your iPhone, and you can now look up words using Google or Wikipedia directly within the app itself. Pretty groovy -- like I said, this is my reading app of choice on the iPhone, and the update only makes it better.

Visualized: 37 years of Roland synths in one awesome animated GIF
You know how much we love our vintage MIDI gear, and apparently our friend Ronny from Das Kraftfuttermischwerk is every bit as big a fan as we are. To that end, he's taken Music Radar's recent guide to all-things Roland and turned it into an awesome (and headache-inducing) animated GIF. New MacBook Pro in two weeks, MacBook Air still a hot seller
Apple's new MacBook Pros should ship in just half a month, sources divulged on Tuesday. Backing a Danish slip, contacts for AppleInsider said that they should be ready by early March. Intel's Sandy Bridge chipset flaw may have been a factor, but production is already underway.

Ittiam shows off four-way 720p HD video conferencing using Android, OMAP 4 (video)
Being Mobile World Congress, quite a few software vendors found themselves tucked into corners of bigger booths, eager and willing to showcase their latest work. Ittiam is one of those companies, relying on Texas Instruments' OMAP 4 platform to power its new HD video conferencing system. The demo shown here at MWC involved a foursome of TI development boxes, but the underlying platform was most certainly Android 2.2. NVIDIA Kal-El official as first quad-core mobile chip
NVIDIA tonight unveiled Kal-El, a chip it claims is the first quad-core mobile processor. Likely to be called the Tegra 3, its two extra processor cores plus a 12-core graphics engine help it get into greater-than-HD resolutions in mobile. The system on a chip with the Superman-inspired name can smoothly play 1440p (2560x1440) video and has enough power to drive a Retina Display-like 300DPI image on a 10-inch tablet.

Jetstar airline to offer in-flight iPads in April
Back in June 2010 we first reported on a pilot program by Qantas Airways' low-cost airline Jetstar to offer iPad rentals as in-flight entertainment, and now we have learned that Jetstar will finally start offering them in April for AUD $10 per flight. According to Australian Business Traveler, the in-flight iPads will come loaded with "movies, music, magazines, books and games" and will be available on Jetstar's A320 flights in Australia and Asia.

Report: Verizon holding up to iPhone 4 influx so far
Tests gauging the performance of Verizon's network just before and just after the official availability of the iPhone 4 show that the network has been able to handle the rush of new users with no real change in performance quality, GigaOm reports. Citing research from web application performance firm Compuware Gomez, an esimtated 500,000 to 700,000 new users were added to the system in the days following the iPhone 4 launch, but the firm says there was no noticeable degradation on the network, measuring only a four-tenths of one percent drop in network averages.

Solowheel self-balancing unicycle is as easy to ride as it is to afford (video)
If a company makes as bold a statement as "we reinvented the wheel" when introducing a gadget you know we've gotta check 'em out and see what the hubbub's about. Well, at the International Toy Fair in New York, Inventist has introduced its "Solowheel" product, which is essentially a self-balancing unicycle for personal mobility. We've seen similar products before, but the convenient carrying handle and lack of seat make it decidedly more portable than the competition.

Overheating iPad suit dismissed
Shortly after the first iPad shipped last April, there were some allegations from users that the device overheated quickly in warm weather or direct sunlight. By July of 2010, three disgruntled iPad owners -- John Browning, Jacob Balthazar, and Claudia Keller -- had filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple. Due to the alleged shut down problem from overheating, the trio stated that they felt that they had been taken in by Apple marketing claims that said that "reading on iPad is just like reading a book." Since books never overheat and shut down, the group accused Apple of fraud, deceptive advertising, and violating State of California consumer protection laws by producing, advertising, and selling defective tablets.

Apple updates iWeb to 3.0.3, minor fixes
Apple has issued a minor update to iWeb, bringing it to v3.0.3 and addressing issues when using the iSight Movie widget on certain Macs, FTP uploading and improving compatibility with Mac OS X. The update's file size is 177.12MB. The program is part of iLife '09 and was not updated for iLife '11. The update requires either the last version of Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) or 10.6.3 or higher.

Rhapsody says Apple subscriptions anti-competive, may sue
Rhapsody today said Apple's new iTunes subscription rules were likely to force it out of the App Store and could lead to more. It called the plan to mandate iTunes in-app purchases "economically untenable" as it couldn't afford giving Apple 30 percent on top of its existing service. The music streaming service said it planned to collaborate with "market peers" and hinted it might sue to force Apple to compete fairly.

NVIDIA announces quad-core Kal-El SOC, promises it in tablets by August
So it turns out that NVIDIA roadmap we saw last month was as true and pure as driven snow. The barely conceivable quad-core Tegra chip that it listed has now been made official by none other than NVIDIA itself, with the company also informing us that the new silicon is already sampling out to prospective clients. Rhapsody won't sing Apple's subscription tune
Hit the fight bell, because here we go -- Harry McCracken reports that Rhapsody is the first company to pass on Apple's new subscription rules, saying in a statement that Apple's arrangement is "economically untenable." Typically, they say, a Rhapsody subscription only costs them a 2.5 percent credit card fee, but with Apple asking for 30 percent of any subscription payments accepted through the app, it just wouldn't work for Rhapsody to offer that service. The in-dash tape deck is dead, mixtape memories will live forever
The rattling of naked cassettes in the glove box. The crunching of plastic cases in the footwell. That satisfying clunk when a tape got pulled down into the dash. For those who drove in the '80s and '90s those are memories of in-car audio, the ubiquitous tape deck, and it's now dead. Well, dead as a factory option, anyway. Samsung 9 Series laptops to include 11.6-inch model?
Samsung managed to impress us back at CES with its ultrathin 9 Series laptop but, as far as we knew at the time, the company was only planning to produce a 13.3-inch version of it. If a listing from online retailer Provantange is any indication though, it looks like there could also be a 11.6-inch model in the pipeline. A first-hand look at the next iPad's PowerVR graphics chip
Most now expect the next iPad to have Imagination Technologies' dual-core PowerVR SGX543 at the heart of its graphics. DiskRadar debuts, focuses on disk health
Following a three-month beta testing period, Binary Fruit today formally introduced DiskRadar for Mac OS X -- a combination disk visualizer, file remover, and drive health evaluator that works with all standard internal and external hard drive types, including RAID setups, thumb drives, network share and FUSE drives and even Time Machine volumes. It goes beyond just reporting S.M.A.R.T status and also looks at reallocated bad sectors, CRC errors and other factors -- including a compiled history of such tests -- to improve its ability to predict impending failure.

Aperture 3.1.1, iWeb 3.0.3 updates released
Software Update calls your name the latest versions of Apple's iWeb site editor (part of the iLife suite) and pro photo management tool Aperture (mentioned today in Ask TUAW) are both available now.

Skype intros Skype Access service for connecting to hotspots
At the Mobile World Congress, Skype introduced new partners in its Skype Access program. This partner program lets Skype users pay for access to Wi-Fi hotspots from a number of partner companies from their Skype accounts.
