The Pioneer Press out of St. Paul, Minn. ran a feature today showcasing tactics that both Apple and Microsoft are using to lure business customers into investing money in their products. This includes a sneak peek into an Apple briefing room in Apple's new Uptown location in Minneapolis -- one of only five in the world that blends a conference room with high-end Mac gear. MagicWand mount pairs Wireless Keyboard with Magic Trackpad
Twelve South has launched MagicWand, an accessory that combines the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the Magic Trackpad into one unit. The tube-shaped device snaps to the underside of the keyboard and trackpad, securing both to the same base. The trackpad can be positioned on the right or left of the keyboard, allowing the unit to accommodate both right- or left-handed users. Spotify locks EMI deal for US, may be kept off of iPhone
Spotify may now be as little as one more label deal away from a US launch but could by stymied by Apple's subscription rules, sources said Thursday. EMI would join Sony and could see it clinch a deal for music streaming if it gets at least Universal. AllThingsD's contacts didn't know how close either Universal or its smaller rival Warner might be to reaching a compromise.

Skype hints at video calling for Android users on AT&T, promises improvements to Qik
We haven't heard a ton out of Skype since its acquisition of Qik last month, but executives from the two companies have finally done a bit of talking at Mobile World Congress this week. As you might expect, any actual merger of the two applications is still a ways off, but Skype has revealed that it plans to share some of its technical expertise to improve the quality of Qik video calls on Sprint and T-Mobile devices, and Skype exec Rick Osterloh also said that we should "watch out for some announcements" when it comes to AT&T. Elle, Pop Sci among few magazines with in-app subscriptions
Only a relative handful of magazines are so far adopting Apple's in-app subscription scheme, an Advertising Age report claims. The major obstacle is said to be demographic data, which publishers normally use to sell advertising space. Because turning over the data is strictly voluntary in iOS apps, however, magazines are said to be resistant. "Without the demographics, which iTunes [Apple] won't release, the print world is castrated," says Gary Armstrong, a consultant on branded content and former Wenner Media executive.

nVidia CEO see the MacBook Air as the future of laptop design
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has seen the future, and it is Apple's present. He believes that in a few years you'll have trouble finding a computer that doesn't look like today's MacBook Air.
At the risk of offending the power users out there who can't imagine using such a "weak" machine as the Air, let me respond to Huang's words with a resounding "Duh." I fully expect Apple to move the rest of the MacBook line towards the Air: lighter, thinner, and with SSDs, becausewell, what else would they do? Thicker, heavier, and with the same drives that we had in 2008? Of course they're going to move in that direction.

Box.net adds VGA out, AirPrint to iPad app
Good news for fans of Box.net. The cloud-based service has added support for video out and AirPrint to its iPad app. Version 2.4, released today, lets users print any file to an AirPrint-capable printer and project documents to a projector or TV.
To project a document, just connect the iPad to a projector, LCD display or TV with Apple's Dock Connector to VGA Adapter and pull up the Box.net document you'd like to display.
Additionally, Box.net for iPad version 2.4 offers security lock and auto log-out. You can protect your stored files with a 4-digit passcode and set the app to log out completely when closed (

Apple, others lobby for tax holiday
Fortune is reporting that Apple is one of many major multinational corporations that are banding together to lobby the U.S. government for a one-year "tax holiday" on foreign cash that is repatriated back to the country.
At the present time, repatriated cash is taxed at a 35% rate. The companies, which include Cisco, Duke Energy, and Pfizer and many others in addition to Apple, are looking for a one-year window in which the rate would drop to 5%. Cisco CEO John Chambers has advocated the idea for years, saying that allowing the cash to be repatriated at a lower rate would stimulate investment in the U.S. and allow shareholders to reap the rewards of their investments in the form of higher divide

Sprint talks seriously about LTE, suggests it could complement WiMAX
We've already heard Sprint do some talking about LTE at Mobile World Congress this week, but the company's Senior Vice President of Networks, Bob Azzi, has now gone even further in an interview with PC World, where he seems to have suggested that a switch to LTE is all but inevitable. Apple patent suggests MagSafe connector that supports data
Apple recently filed a patent for a product described as "Magnetic Connector with Optical Signal Path." The patent filing describes a MagSafe-style cable that would provide both data and power to a device. The power cable would connect magnetically and contain additional internal pins allowing for the transmission of data as well as audio and video signals. Downstream, the cable would include the appropriate adapters for each device you want to connect.

Apple nearing iPhone deal with China Telecom, says analyst
Apple and China Telecom appear to be closer to signing an iPhone distribution deal, says Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White. The analyst points to a NetEase claim that one branch of China Telecom has started accepting pre-orders for a CDMA iPhone. Motorolas Xoom kommt bei der Telekom

Es ist noch nicht ganz klar wo genau die Telekom das Xoom vertreiben wird, aber in Deutschland ist schon mal höchstwahrscheinlich wie Heise meldet. Welchen Preis das Honeycomb Tablet hierzulande bekommt und in welchen Versionen es erscheint (4G ist ja noch immer Testphase) ist allerdings nicht bekannt. Dafür wissen wir aber jetzt, das abgesehen von der Netz-Einheit die Spezifikationen bei allen Xooms gleich sind. Egal ob mit G3 oder nur mit WiFi. Promovideo zur Vorfreude noch mal nach dem Break.

Pixelfari browser lets you surf like it's 1982
Not every app on your Mac has to be useful -- sometimes you just want to have a little retro fun. That's the idea behind Pixelfari, a free "pixely, 8-bitty" version of the Apple Safari web browser.
The browser was the brainchild of Neven Mrgan, who brought us The Incident, a game for iOS and Mac that is also an 8-bitter. Sources say next iPhone will have 'twist' on NFC
The next-generation iPhone will indeed have NFC (near-field communications) support, but with a "twist," according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. Citing sources, White claims that the phone will use a "unique" approach differentiating itself from competitors. Another treat you'll find is an additional $5,000 rebate on cars that are rated AT-PZEV -- that's Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle, those having very low emissions and hybrid-like technology. Mozilla Firefox 4 soll erst im März erscheinen

I want to relate an interesting story my brother told me the other day about one fascinating -- and negative -- way Apple is affecting children in the classroom. My brother is a grade school teacher, and recently he's noticed an alarming trend in his students' grammar, specifically capitalization. It started a few years ago. My brother would review a sentence one of his students wrote, and it would read, "i went on a walk with my mom." He'd see this lowercase I and would mention to the student that he forgot to capitalize it. These lowercase I's would show up occasionally, but my brother always assumed it was just a case of forgetfulness on the student's part.

Not all doctors are created equal
We all know that a US shock tabloid is running with a story involving Steve Jobs' health and his possible ongoing treatment (no, we're not linking it). Plenty of news outlets have quoted chunks of this story verbatim, including the grim assessments of several physicians who base their comments and presumptive outcomes on pictures of Steve printed in this paper.
We're not going to comment on the 'substance' of the story except to say that we hope everyone will give Steve and his family the privacy we all would want for ourselves or our loved ones while dealing with health issues.
However, it's worth considering the doctors quoted in this matter. An oncologist contacted by a British paper was circumspect about Jobs' prognosis -- he only reiterated the obvious, that if Jobs is photographed leaving a treatment center it is rea

Redbox confirms subscription service, may team with Amazon
Redbox at an analyst presentation said its tentative movie streaming would follow the subscription model. In confirming the plans, President Mitch Lowe said it would follow a strategy similar to Netflix, where members would get the Internet streaming along with access to physical copies. Sony denies rumored plans to exit iTunes
Sony is preparing to launch its Music Unlimited service in the U.S. today and has used this occasion to debunk the rumor that it was pulling out of iTunes. A recent interview with Michael Ephraim, chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, hinted that Sony may leave iTunes if its own Music Unlimited service saw widespread adoption. Apple is buying up touchscreen displays for the 40 million iPad tablets it intends to sell in 2011, and it has scooped up 60 percent of the global touchscreen inventory. Apple has secured most of the touchscreen displays coming off the production line of panel makers Wintek and TPK and has created a shortage among second-tier tablet makers. The report suggests RIM, HP and Motorola are competing for the remaining inventory, a situation that makes it difficult for smaller manufacturers to compete in this growing market.

Apple skips Mobile World Congress, wins Mobile Device of the Year anyway
Apple doesn't do trade shows anymore, even popular ones that contain names of its products, so it's not surprising that the company skipped out on the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. What's the difference between a WiFi-only Xoom tablet and one equipped with EV-DO Rev. A or HSPA bands? Just $200 and the radio chip within. Motorola just released the full spec sheets for its full lineup of Android Honeycomb tablets, and they're otherwise exactly the same inside. That goes for the Tegra 2 SOC, of course, but also surprisingly the GPS, which is often baked right into the cellular radio in mobile devices like these. Motorola defends Xoom's $800 price, details Euro carriers
Motorola along with confirming its Xoom launch plans has defended the $800 price and said which carriers and companies would pick it up. CEO Sanjay Jha noted that the Xoom's 4G was built into hardware and that the software upgrade was 'free.' Having the LTE access, which could reach up to 50Mbps on the Xoom, meant it was "at least competitive and in a number of ways better" than Apple's iPad, he said.

According to AppleInsider, President Obama's West Coast field trip is going to kick off in San Francisco with dinner.
Not just any dinner, mind you. This happens to be dinner with the outgoing CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, Mark Zuckerberg (who built some sort of newfangled website) and our own Uncle Steve. Das mit h.264 kodierte Filmchen läuft auf dem Pearl-Display, also der technologie, die auch auf der aktuellen Kindle-Generation zum EInsatz kommt. Der Przessor bei diesem Experiment ist ein OMAP3621 von Texas Instruments und der Stromverbrauch liegt ungefähr auf LCD-Niveau ohne Hintergrundbeleuchtung. TUAW's Daily App: Volcano Escape
Here's another day-and-date release for you -- Volcano Escape is brand new on the App Store today, and it's an interesting take on the Canabalt-style genre. It asks you to run up a series of platforms inside a volcano rather than across rooftops like usual. The controls are a little floaty, unfortunately, but I think it's designed that way, as you can basically double and wall jump your way up the various stages. There's a button for shooting, and shooting various enemies will turn them into stone that you can then jump off of on your way up. Aiming is pretty tough, though, so sometimes it's easier to just dodge the baddies and move on.

Let's hope Sony's new streaming music service -- just launched today for the US, Austrlia, and New Zealand -- isn't as unwieldy to use as its "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity" moniker suggests. Mobclix finds the monthly value of an app user
Mobile advertiser Mobclix put together this infographic supposedly showing the "monthly value of an app user." It's the monthly advertising revenue for each app category listed, divided by the average number of users in a given month. As you can see above, iPhone apps are clearly generating more revenue per user than Android apps across the board, and Utilities apps top the list in terms of monthly value per user, as compared to Entertainment and Games apps.

Apples Marktanteil in der Schweiz 2010
Das «Weissbuch 2011» ist dieser Tage erschienen: Die Marktstudie der Firma Robert Weiss Consulting erscheint jährlich im Februar und enthält detailiertes Zahlenmaterial über den gesamten ICT-Markt der Schweiz. Weiter werden Marktprognosen sowohl für das laufende als auch für die folgenden Jahre aufgestellt. Die im Weissbuch enthaltenden Umsatzzahlen liegen den von der Computerworld erhobenen Zahlen zugrunde. Die Studie kann bei Robert Weiss Consulting erworben werden. Weiss veranstaltete am vergangenen Donnerstag in Zürich das Weissbuch Seminar 2011. Das Weissbuch gibt unter anderem auch Aufschluss darüber, wie Apples Marktanteile in der Schweiz aussehen. Dieses Jahr zudem erstmals ebenfalls mitberücksichtigt wurde der Schweizer Smartphone-Markt.

Kno says some tablets will ship within 60 days, doesn't explain pre-order delay
We were somewhat taken aback when Kno confirmed its textbook tablet had been delayed without a word on when production would resume, but the company now says pre-orders will experience up to two months' delay before they ship out, and not all of them will. eBookNewser and CrunchGear report that shipments could be delayed until as late as April 14th, and that the first shipment will be restricted "to a limited number of students and teachers." In case you missed it, Watson won again tonight. He even got the Final Jeopardy question correct this time, a multi-layered reference to Bram Stroker that he bet $10k on. His final score over the two rounds ended up at $77,147 (Watson has this thing for betting strange amounts that usually end in a 7), while Ken Jennings got $24,000 and Brad Rutter did $21,600 -- both humans saving a bit of face after last round's stunning defeat. Acer chair insists iPad damage to netbooks will end by March
Acer chairman JT Wang attacked the iPad again today in commentary that reflected the fallout from earlier denials. He acknowledged that the iPad damaged Acer portable sales in the past three to five months but insisted that it was simply a question of buyers waiting for the next wave of tablets to decide whether or not to buy. Rumor: Jobs in treatment at Palo Alto cancer center
The National Enquirer is preparing to publish photos next week that show Apple CEO Steve Jobs outside the Stanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, celebrity gossip site RadarOnline reports. The photos are said to have taken just a day after Jobs was spotted working on the Cupertino campus of Apple, shortly after announcing his latest medical leave, the tabloid alleges.

Bookeen shows off FMV on a standard E Ink Pearl display (video)
The details are few with this one but really it's the highlights that matter here: Bookeen has managed to get smooth full-motion video to play on an E Ink Pearl display. Yes, the same sort that delivers agonizingly slow refreshes on the latest Kindles and such. Nokia says it can customize the heck out of Windows Phone, won't do anything that would delay updates
In an interview with Nokia VP Niklas Savander at Mobile World Congress, Phone Scoop probed a bit more on the company's plans to rework the Windows Phone user experience -- a user experience that's been essentially closed to OEMs thus far apart from the occasional tile here or added menu item there. Qualcomm's FlashLinq long-range peer-to-peer communications tech demoed at MWC (video)

Qualcomm's FlashLinq is a quasi-extension of AllJoyn, but unlike the latter, this is a proprietary solution that actually requires Qualcomm hardware to run (for now anyway; licensing deals could be in the works). Basically, this wireless technology allows FlashLinq-enabled devices to sense up to 4,000 other FlashLinq devices within a radius of up to 1km, which puts things like WiFi and Bluetooth to shame. RationalPlan project management updated to 3.21

Qualcomm demos AllJoyn peer-to-peer sharing / gaming technology (video)
It's simple, but highly complex. You dig? Qualcomm's AllJoyn demonstration here at MWC was quite the eye-opener, but it's hard to say how much traction it'll gain in a world already inundated with short-range transfer protocols. Bluetooth, Infrared, Wi-Fi Direct the list goes on and on (and on). LightSquared says it has signed up five companies for its wholesale LTE service
LightSquared has faced something of an uphill battle in getting its wholesale 4G LTE network off the ground -- even including accusations that it's a threat to national security -- but it looks like it's having fairly good luck attracting some customers. According to Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben, LightSquared has signed agreements with five companies so far, including two carriers, one website, a national retailer, and a device manufacturer -- none of which it's able to name, of course. In the App Store, they all have (or would have, if Sony's app had been approved) one thing in common: they're represented by free apps that serve as profitable storefronts to their digital content. Warner packages movies as iOS apps, starting with The Dark Knight and Inception
Online rentals and purchases of movies is still just a tiny fraction of the overall pie, but Warner's latest effort to expand that is coming from an unusual direction, offering its highest profile flicks as apps for iPhones and iPads. The Dark Knight and Inception are the first two releases out of the gate, offering free apps with some bonus content and the first five minutes of the movie, then charging $9.99 and $11.99, respectively to unlock the rest. Motorola CEO hints Google Music to surface with Android 3.0
Motorola Mobility's CEO Sanjay Jha may have spoiled plans for Google Music in his discussion at Mobile World Congress. He blurted out that "there will be a music service" and tied it closely to the launch of Android 3.0. He didn't say whether it would port over Android phones, but Android 2.4 is likely.
