Toshiba to release its Windows 7 tablet in the second half of the year
We know, from the side that tablet up there looks a lot like Toshiba's still unnamed 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, but it's actually the company's future Windows 7 slate, which we were told today won't be hitting the market until the second half of 2011. The model Toshiba had on display was behind glass and wasn't actually powered on, but we did confirm that it will have an 11.6-inch display and will be powered by Intel's Atom Oak Trail processor. Instagram photo sharing service reaches two million users
Picture-sharing service Instagram (driven only by the popularity of its free iOS app) has hit a whopping two million users already. As TechCrunch notes, the service hit its first million users in just three months, and six weeks after that, has doubled that number. That's pretty astounding growth -- even other popular sharing services usually don't hit those milestones until a year or more after they start operation.

Vor wenigen Minuten hat Apple ein kleines Update des im iLife-Paket enthaltenen iWeb veröffentlicht.Version 3.0.3 ist nun via der Apple Softwareaktualisierung verfügbar.Lediglich zwei kleine Fehler wurden behoben und die Mac OS X Kompatibilität verbessert:• Behebung eines Problems, wenn Sie das Widget „iSight-Film“ auf einigen Macs verwenden.• Behebung eines Problems beim Veröffentlichen von iWeb-Sites mithilfe von FTP iWeb 3.0.3 ist rund 186 MB groß und steht kostenlos zum Download bereit. AT&T gets a $49 iPhone 3GS - and a new ad to sell it (video)
It looks like someone's realized that simultaneous voice and web will not be enough to keep kids away from the Verizon iPhone. But where technical details fail to entice, perhaps a good deal will. Because, really, what's better (or at least as good) as retaining your current customers? Bringing in a slew of new ones with a $49 iPhone 3GS (8GB); at least that's what AT&T is banking on. We'll have to wait and see how this works out for the carrier, but in the meantime feel free to check out the latest commercial after the break. Fashion and trends magazine Nylon has updated its iPad app to v1.2. The primary addition is support for in-app subscriptions, making Nylon one of the first publications to gain the billing option after The Daily. Was sich mit der Markteinführung der iPad-Tageszeitung „The Daily“ bereits ankündigte, hat Apple heute in einer Pressemitteilung bestätigt: Anbieter, die ausserhalb ihrer iOS-Apps Abonnements verkaufen, müssen diese zum gleichen Preis oder günstiger auch als In-App-Abos anbieten. App Store guidelines updated for subscriptions, more
Apple's guidelines for developers who place their wares in the App Store have been updated, with a few key bullets. Changes to accommodate the new subscription models are there in section 11, along with a stern warning up front to developers who might game the review system or steal other devs' work: "[Y]our apps will be removed from the store and you will be expelled from the developer program."

Sprint evaluating switch to LTE over the next four to six months
Sprint has had an on again / off again relationship with LTE for some time now, but it looks it may finally be nearing a commitment one way or the other. Nexus S suffering from random data loss, reboots?
Lots of people have lots of problems with lots of things, but to say that we've been getting lots of complaints about Nexus S issues would be an understatement. Hundreds have chimed in on the Google Mobile Help forum indicating that their handsets are frequently losing data signal and, once lost, a reboot is required to reconnect. Researchers calculate the amount of information in the world, move on to calculate how much time they wasted on silly calculations
Have you ever wondered how much information there is in the world? No? Well, someone has. In fact, new research by a team at the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, led by Martin Hilbert, has gone ahead and done some calculations to that effect, and the results, while seemingly trivial, are rather interesting. Turns out that there's a ton of information in the world, and the rate of its production is ever-increasing. A few fun tidbits: the current capacity for information, including digital and analog devices, is 295 exabytes, and by their metrics, 2002 is considered the start of the digital age. By 2007, around 94 percent of information was stored digitally. The full research is in the February issue

Apple's subscription model is boon to consumers, bad for publishers
As we reported earlier, Apple announced the arrival of new subscription services for apps in the App Store today. According to the press release, subscriptions purchased from within the App Store will utilize the same billing system currently employed for app and in-app purchases. Publishers are free to set the length and price of the subscriptions, which can be weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly. Then with one click, customers choose the length of their subscription and are immediately charged for it.

Motorola exec nearly rules out Windows Phone completely, laments 'closed platform'
Motorola may have once said that it was "open" to developing Windows Phone 7 devices, but it looks like that possibility is now a whole lot less likely than it already was. Apple führt In-App-Abonnemente ein
Seit der Einführung von «The Daily», der ersten nur auf dem iPad verfügbaren Tageszeitung, testet Apple ein neues In-App-Bezahlverfahren speziell für Abonnemente. Dieser Abo-Service steht ab sofort auch allen Herausgebern von inhalte-basierten Apps wie Zeitschriften, Magazine oder Streaming-Apps zur Verfügung, wie Apple heute in einer Pressemitteilung bekannt gab.
Im Gegensatz zu den bestehenden In-App-Purchases, welche als einmalige Bezahlung beispielsweise für neue Levels in Games funktionieren, kann ein Kunde mittels dem Abonnement auch über längere Zeit gebunden werden – wie dies bei einem klassischen Zeitungsabonnement auch der Fall ist.
Zu Kontroversen bei namhaften Verlegern führte im Vorfeld die Bekanntgabe, dass Anbieter von bezahlten Inhalten gezwungenermassen den neuen Abo-Service anbieten müssen. Dem Herausgeber bleibt es allerdings selbst überlassen, ob dieser neben dem Apple-Abo-Services auch noch eine eigene Bezahlmethode anbietet. Twitter CEO shoots down talk of a Twitter-branded smartphone before it starts
Think Twitter's going to follow Facebook and lend its brand to a smartphone? Think again. Twitter CEO Dick Costello said during his Mobile World Congress keynote yesterday that while he does see a need to better integrate Twitter into existing platforms for phones, he sees no need for a Twitter-branded smartphone. AT&T highlights $49 iPhone 3GS in new TV ad
AT&T is wielding a new weapon in its fight against Verizon Wireless: the iPhone 3GS. In the carrier's latest advertisement, the almost 20-month old handset and its $49 price tag is dangled in front of customers as a cheap alternative to the iPhone 4. Price-wise, the iPhone 3GS lets customers jump on the iPhone bandwagon for $150 less than the 16 GB iPhone 4 and $250 less than the 32 GB model.

Washington Post extends free iPad app subscription
The free ride on the Post iPad app was supposed to end in mid-February, but the Post app has been updated and the iTunes Store description says that the full access subscription is still "provided for a limited time."

Apple MacBook Air survey gets chatty about 3G
Apple isn't much of one for customer surveys, but this recent missive to select MacBook Air owners has all sorts of goodies inside it. Most notable is the large amount of questions on 3G data connectivity, a feature that Apple has so far avoided adding to any of its laptops, even though it sells a tablet computer with the functionality. Google demos Android Movie Studio for Honeycomb
Google won't let anyone take pictures during its MWC 2011 keynote, so you'll just have to trust us when we say Eric Schmidt just demoed a new video editing application called Movie Studio for Honeycomb tablets. The app was built from the ground up for tablet devices, and it features everything you'd expect: a timeline-style editor, picture effects, soundtrack and audio support, and of course, HD support with uploads to YouTube. Verizon network reportedly handling iPhone traffic well
Verizon's vaunted network is handling the onslaught of new iPhones very well, according to a report published by web application performance firm Compuware Gomez. The report states that Verizon's mobile data performance seems untouched by the addition of hundreds of thousands of data-hungry iPhones to the network. There was virtually no change -- about four-tenths of one percent slower -- in the performance of the Verizon network in terms of browsing and page load times.
The firm made measurements of data performance on the Verizon network on the first four official days of iPhone availability -- February 10 - 13. Based on estimates from Wall Street analysts, upwards of 500,000 Verizon iPhones may have been purchased during pre-sales, with a

Qualcomm zeigt auf dem World Mobile Congress in Barcelona den Prototyp eines Ultraschall-Stifts, mit dem handschriftliche Notizen direkt ins Handy oder Notebook gespeichert werden können. Dazu übersetzt der Stift die ausgeführten Bewegungen zuerst in Töne aus dem Ultraschallspektrum, die dann über das Mikro im Handy mitgeschnitten werden und von einer Qualcomm-Software wieder in Linien übersetzt werden. Von da aus übernimmt bei Bedarf eine Handschrifterkennungs-Software, um den Text zur Weiterverarbeitung zu generieren. Das System klingt erstmal genial einfach und idiotensicher, die praktischen Haken werden wir dann bestimmt erleben, wenn Qualcomm ein Produkt daraus macht.

ZTE outed several new sets -- and a tablet -- at MWC 2011, so we went to grab some specs and pics of the Blade, Skate, and the Amigo (from left to right). The ZTE Skate is the top of the line product in this group with Android 2.3 -- though, the placard at the stand has been blanked out -- triple-band GSM, HSPA in 1900 / 2100Mhz range, a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive display, 5 megapixel cam, and likely the smallest keyboard we've ever seen, seriously, have a peek at the gallery. Sparrow gets AppleScript support, immediately put to use with OmniFocus
Sparrow, the sleek new email client for Mac OS X, was updated yesterday to improve speed, fix some minor bugs, and add some limited AppleScript support. While the changes might not be apparent to many Sparrow users, they were apparently an inspiration to Don Southard, who immediately figured out a way to use the AppleScript support with OmniFocus.

Deutsche Telekom pegs Apple as supporting NFC payments
Deutsche Telekom has identified Apple as one of the companies which will be supporting NFC (near-field communication) payments this year, reports say. In slides handed out today during a presentation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Apple was listed as a company participating in the rollout of NFC payment systems across several cellphones. Deutsche Telekom claims Apple will support near-field communication e-wallet
Fun things are afoot at the Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona, Spain.
Today's news comes from Deutsch Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile here in the U.S. and around the world. The corporation announced that it's rolling out the ability to make payments with a near-field communication (NFC) enabled smartphone starting this year. Throughout 2012, the full payment system will be rolled out in the U.S. through a previously announced joint venture with Apple and Verizon.
The system, to be known as T-Mobile's Mobile Wallet, will let users make payments simply by waving an NFC-equipped phone near a payment kiosk. The company believes that mobile payments that replace cash, such as buying a 72-ounce Slurpee at the

Die Kinderzimmerversion des Audiogeschmieres soll in den USA im Sommer für 40 Dollar zu haben sein, allerdings legt das Mikro den Effekt nicht in Echtzeit aufs Eingangssignal, statt wird erst aufgenommen und dann verfremdet abgespielt. Deutsche Hightech-Exporte steigen

When Apple's Eddy Cue, Rupert Murdoch and others launched the iPad-only newspaper The Daily, Cue promised that its subscription model would be made available to other iOS publications soon. Today, Apple has officially launched App Store subscriptions.

The College was one of several educational establishments that tested the Kindle DX when the eReader was launched in 2009. iOS 4.3 Update am 28. Februar?
Leider hat uns Apple gestern nicht mit einem iOS Update beschenkt. Die Gründe könnten verschiedener Natur sein. Eigentlich war man sich sicher, dass am 14 Februar das ausgebebaute iOS in der 4.3 Verlängerung kommen wird. Crystal Soul is another puzzle/RPG mashup that features yet another take on mixing up the two genres. At its heart, the game is a new kind of puzzler, where you play as a character wandering a board of hexes. Every time you step into a hex with a monster (or a mana stone in it), you clear all of the monsters of the same color that are touching it. So, the basic goal is to wander the game board and clear out monsters as quickly as you can.
There are RPG elements, though -- you can play as a Swordsman, Ranger or Mage, and each class has its own spells that will help you clear the board by attacking in certain patterns or in special ways. Hands on: HTCs erstes Tablet Flyer liegt solide, aber auch etwas schwer und sperrig in der Hand

Unsere Kollgen beim World Mobile Congress in Barcelona haben sich HTCs gerade vorgestelltes Tablet namens Flyer prompt geschnappt, um zu festzustellen, wie sich das Teil so anfühlt. Fazit: Der Aluminium Unibody sorgt für einen wertigen, soliden Eindruck, leider fühlt sich das Tablet aber auch sperrig an und seine 415 Gramm wiegen auch nicht gerade leicht in der Hand. For most of us, ZTE's only known for its budget Android devices in the cellphone market, but this ever-expanding company's aiming to change its image with a slightly more powerful flagship device come May. DigiTimes: next iPhone to sport A5, four-inch screen?
Taiwanese industry paper DigiTimes, which has a very mixed track record on Apple reporting, has come out with a claim that the next version of the iPhone will come with an all-new, Cortex A9-based multi-core chip called the A5 -- as well as include a larger, four-inch screen as opposed to the current 3.5-inch one. Apple sits as top mobile maker, but no. 2 in OS presence
Apple is the top mobile manufacturer, but faces a growing threat from HTC, January data from Millennial Media suggests. The mobile advertiser notes that Apple grew 24 percent month-over-month to sit at a 26.07 percent share. HTC settled for second place, but did so by rising 36 percent to achieve 20.98 percent. A Taiwanese Mac news site with a history of accurately predicting future Apple products says Apple is currently testing three different prototypes of the next iPhone. From what can be gleaned from the Google translation, tw.apple.pro says one of the iPhone 5 prototypes features a a slide-out physical keyboard -- a form factor that Steve Jobs and Apple have never seemed too keen to embrace.

HTC Revolver: a flagship 'Honeycomb' phone for AT&T?
Well, this is certainly curious. If the tipster who sent us the image above is to be believed, you're looking at HTC's new flagship smartphone, the Revolver, which is supposedly headed to AT&T in the third quarter of this year. Porsche unveils fully-electric Boxster E, a drop-top EV we can get behind
They're just prototypes at this point and number only three, but the trio of Boxster E convertibles Porsche has produced could be a sign of very good things to come from the company. Of course there's the 918 RSR and 918 Spyder, but the former of those two is intended only for the track and the latter only for the incredibly wealthy. ASUS still considering Windows Phone 7 device, carriers 'key factor'

Tired of waiting for Google and its algorithms to filter content farms and other shady sites out of your search results? Radiohead releasing new downloadable album, MC Hammer releases new iPad single
You may remember, about four years ago, Radiohead raising a stink over the digital release of its album In Rainbows. The band decided to "sell" the album on its website, asking fans to pay whatever they wanted, while at the same time shunning Apple's iTunes service, claiming they wanted to sell the album rather than individual songs. Back then, Radiohead's statement was pretty amazing, if only because there weren't a lot of other digital channels besides Apple's store.

Legend has it that the ViewSonic V350 is one of the few dual-SIM Android 2.2 phones on the market. We got a chance to play with a pre-release unit today, and it works as advertised, serving simultaneous quadband GSM plus dualband UMTS (900 / 2100MHz HSPA) on the first SIM, and quadband GSM on the second. YouMail provides an option to Google Voice for your voicemail needs
YouMail is a voicemail replacement for your iPhone, but is also available for Android and BlackBerry phones. It aims to give you a more efficient, share-able voicemail system across platforms. I've been testing YouMail for a couple of days and I think the first thing people will want to know is: How is this different than Google Voice? Like Google Voice, there's a web interface for checking your voicemails. Also like Google Voice, it can "take over" voicemail from your built-in provider (in my case, that's AT&T). BMW to show a pair of EVs at Geneva, one rather more futuristic than the other (video)
The next major auto show is nearly upon us, and BMW is tipping its hat to reveal a few of its plans. The pride of Bavaria will show off a pair of EVs at the show, starting with the official debut of the ActiveE, an electrified version of the 1 Series coupe that has three battery packs (under the hood, in the transmission tunnel, and under the rear seats) for proper weight balance. Share links between Mac and iOS with Dropbox trickery
It's beginning to look like the holy grail for any Mac user that also totes around an iPhone or iPod Touch -- being able to open URLs remotely so that one can view them later from the comfort of their big, delicious Mac screen. Thanks to MacStories and their readers, we now have a workaround that fits the bill quite nicely.
There are a number of apps and services that let one send links to the iPhone easily, but no one seems to have truly mastered sending links the other way. Obama's 2012 budget includes push for 'mini-nuke' reactor development

Apple issues 2011 Sustainability Report
Apple has published their annual sustainability report, now titled the "2011 Supplier Responsibility Progress Report" that focuses on two areas the company has come under fire for neglecting: worker treatment and environmental stewardship. The Matrix app turns iPads into a video wall
I spoke with someone from Anywise Enterprises at CES this past year, and they told me about The Matrix, an iPad app (that's now out on the App Store) that will network a bunch of iPads together to create a video wall of whatever size you want. We've seen this idea custom implemented in art installations and design ideas before, but this is a one-touch implementation for broadcasting a multimedia installation across a set of iPads.

Rumor floats iPhone prototype with slider keyboard
Apple has reportedly been more experimental with iPhone prototypes based on a rumor from Taiwan on Monday. The company is believed testing an iPhone with a "sliding cover" that would hold a keyboard. Apple.pro in the claim also mentioned a second model that would resemble an iPhone 4 with an eight- or 12-megapixel camera and longer battery life.

Apple issues report on supplier workplace audits and standards
Over the past several years, reports about alleged mistreatment of contract workers building Apple devices at plants throughout Asia have been rampant. Apple has not taken these reports lightly, and today the company issued a new report on supplier responsibility that outlines the efforts that have been made to make life better for the people who make our shiny toys.
According to the report (link to PDF), Apple conducted 127 workplace audits in 2010 -- 97 at locations that had not been previously visited, and 30 repeat audits. Briefly: Mac language petition, CafePress VZ iPhone cases
A new website, multiApple, has been established to petition Apple for changes to its Mac language policies. The site observes that while some languages are commonly supported by Apple apps, a number of European languages like Czech or Icelandic are still dependent on separate localization files, which may sometimes be released weeks after their mainstream counterparts. The petition demands that all official European languages be integrated into standard installations, and that manuals be translated for every European country.
