RIM shows PlayBook living in sweet harmony with BlackBerry Torch in new video
It's no secret that RIM's PlayBook is going to need a connection to a nearby BlackBerry phone to do much of its corporate heavy lifting, and a new video posted by the company today shows a little more detail on exactly how that'll look. BBC: Soviet-era films being sold illegally on iTunes
The BBC has reported that several Soviet-era films are being sold illegally through the App Store. The copyright holders of Russian-made films, including Gentlemen of Fortune, Assa, The Diamond Arm, Kin-dza-dza and Cheburashka have said they have not given consent for their films to be sold in the App Store.
The BBC spoke with one of the programmers, Vladimir Penshin, who said that he deliberately decided to offer the material for sale, despite the copyright.
"Of course, I do not have any license agreement," Penshin told the BBC. "This is all very simple. The companies, who can have complaints, submit them to Apple and Apple notifies me that they have to withdraw the application." Totally blow out the big game! Super Bowl XLV

Sprint starts up 4G world roaming with real unlimited data
Sprint today claimed a symbolic first by being the first US carrier with a 4G roaming deal. Those traveling to Jamaica or Taiwan will have the option of getting online through the WiMAX networks on Digicel and Global Mobile respectively. Unlike typical usage-based roaming plans, access will be genuinely unlimited and will give users a $15 day pass that supplies unlimited data.

Verizon's Pantech UML290 4G modem gets Mac support
The 4G LTE-capable Pantech UML290 USB modem introduced at the start of December for Verizon has just received a driver that would make it Mac-compatible. Available on the carrier's support page, the software marks the first time Mac users will get access to Verizon's LTE network. The LG VL600 modem introduced alongside the Pantech device doesn't yet offer a Mac driver.

PayPal hires 17-year Apple vet as new VP of global design
PayPal has hired a 17-year Apple veteran, Sarah Brody, as its new VP of global design, the company has confirmed. Some of her design work can reportedly be seen in the first-generation iPhone, as well as in an early version of the iPod nano. Other examples are said to be located on the webpages for Final Cut Studio, Logic Studio and the general "Pro" page marketing Apple products to corporations and freelancers.

NASA's Sustainability Building, the government's greenest building, opening in California this year
You may or may not have heard about NASA's project to build the most sustainable federal building in Moffett, California. The project began about two years ago, and will supposedly be finished this May. The experimental, earthly 'space station' cost $20.6 million to build, and includes 50,000 square feet of work space on two floors. The building also includes radiant ceiling panels, heating panels on walls, and radiant concrete flooring. When completed, the Sustainability Base will use 90 percent less potable water than a regular office building of the same size, and it will be able to create 22 percent more energy.

Report that iPad is losing share to Android tablets corrected
A circulating report falsely suggests the iPad is still the #1 tablet on the market, but is losing market share to Android. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, the iPad held on to a 75.3% market share in Q4 2010, while Android captured a respectable 21.6% share. This distribution differs greatly from the previous quarter, when the iPad dominated with 95.5% market share and Android took a small 2.3%. Much of this boost comes from sales of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which reportedly jumped to two million units by the end of the year.

Apple allowing service on iPods with tripped liquid sensors
Apple should be allowing warranty repairs on iPods even in some cases where the liquid contact indicator (LCI) has been tripped, documents found by a French website show. The LCI is a small sensor located in an iPod's headphone jack, sometimes used to disqualify a player from repairs. Apple terms normally invalidate warranties in cases where a device has been exposed to water or some other fluid.

iPad share said down to 75%, but Android share misleading
Strategy Analytics on Monday claimed that Android had carved deeply into Apple's market share of the tablet market despite new doubts. Devices like the Galaxy Tab had cut the iPad's share from a near-monopoly 95 percent down to 75.3 percent. Android itself claimed 21.6 percent of the market while the remaining 3.1 percent was split between Windows and every other minor tablet platform.

Angry Birds doing a movie tie-in as well
Hot on the heels of the announcement that Doodle Jump will be working with Universal to promote the upcoming Hop movie, Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile confirmed it will be producing a new version of Angry Birds set in Rio. This new version will be used to promote the upcoming movie Rio which is being produced by 20th Century Fox and developed by the folks behind the popular Ice Age series of animated children's movies.

Ericsson demos 168Mbps 3G
Ericsson on Monday showed off new record speeds for 3G. The network gear designer said it had successfully tested HSPA service running at 168Mbps downstream and 24Mbps upstream using a real "prototype consumer device" and practical networking hardware. Its speed, achieved by using bonding an unnamed number of channels together, was about four times the 42Mbps peak of the very latest cellular networks.

Windows Phone 7 gets 2% US share on launch, iPhone 4 on top
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 had just two percent of the US market in its first quarter on sale, new NPD data uncovered. A decision to ship in mid-quarter at the height of competition between Apple and Google left it with the same fall market share as HP's webOS. HTC Thunderbolt might be getting simultaneous voice and data on 3G after all
We won't lie: we've been pretty skeptical of the rumors so far that the HTC Thunderbolt would have support for simultaneous voice and data over EV-DO -- SVDO, as it's known -- turned on. Motorola Super Bowl ad tease: Apple has made 2011 like 1984
Motorola escalated the rhetoric surrounding the Xoom tablet on Monday with a new teaser video (below) for its upcoming Super Bowl ad. Droid Bionic appears on Amazon with $150 price tag, quickly disappears again
Something's seriously going on over at Amazon's Wireless store where the Droid Bionic, a Verizon sibling to AT&T's Atrix 4G, has today been spotted listed for sale with a $149.99 price. That matches the levy Amazon asked for the Atrix last week (before promptly yanking the page) and seems to confirm that the $150 price point is receiving some sincere consideration for these 4G-equipped handsets. Nintendo puts out keyboard add-on for DS, smartphones
Nintendo Japan has just announced it will bring out a Bluetooth keyboard for its portable DS gaming system. It will be bundled with the Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS game and the necessary Bluetooth adapter for the console itself, as it lacks Bluetooth support. The keyboard will also be compatible with smartphones that support wireless keyboards, including iOS and Android.

Notion Ink delays some Adam shipments to February 14th due to touchscreens damaged in transit
The growing pains of being a small company dealing with big demand have bitten Notion Ink again, as the company has had to dish out a disappointing email to some Adam buyers informing them their delivery has been delayed to February 14th. The culprit in this sad case is a shipment of damaged touchscreens, which company chief Rohan Shravan estimates will affect just over five percent of all orders. AT&T overbilling on iPhone, iPad accounts, lawsuit claims
AT&T is "systematically" overbilling iPhone and iPad users for data, a new federal class action lawsuit argues. "AT&T's bills systematically overstate the amount of data used on each data transaction involving an iPhone or iPad account," a document submitted on behalf of plaintiff Patrick Hendricks reads. The carrier's scheme is akin to a rigged gas pump that "charges for a full gallon when it pumps only nine-tenths of a gallon into your car's tank," the complaint continues.

Macworld Expo 2011: Freehands brings a warm feeling to iOS device users
This week a lot of the U.S. is going to be in a deep freeze. For people who want to use their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in the great outdoors, that generally means that your fingers are going to be left uncovered and numb with the cold since most gloves can't provide the capacitive touch that the user interface requires.
The son of a glove manufacturer, Freehands CEO Josh Rubin came up with a solution to the cold dilemma in late 2007 when he developed the first Freehands gloves. Many of the glove designs feature finger and thumb tips that fold back to uncover the bare skin of these locations, with magnets to hold the tips out of the way while you poke at your screen. Samsung says Galaxy Tab sales to consumers actually 'quite small'
When is a tablet sold not actually a tablet sold? When it's a Galaxy Tab, apparently. As The Wall Street Journal reports, those two million Galaxy Tabs that Samsung reported it had "sold" in the fourth quarter of last year were apparently not actual sales to consumers, but simply sales to distributors (which is a different matter altogether). Samsung reveals Galaxy Tab's real sales are 'quite small'
Samsung during the call for its fall quarter results admitted that its actual sales of the Galaxy Tab weren't nearly as strong as claimed. Although it had said it sold 1.5 million Galaxy Tabs in 2010 and two million by this month, company official Lee Young-hee when pressed said that these were only sales to carriers and retail stores, not real customers. She wouldn't say how many had shipped but was aware that it was "quite small" relative to the number reaching stores.

Active Storage outs ActiveSAN Xserve replacement for Macs
Active Storage has made its leaked XServe replacement officially known on Monday, calling the metadata controller appliance ActiveSAN. Apple's Xserve are discontinued as of today as well, and the ActiveSAN is being endorsed by Apple. Pirate Box: Filesharing anonym in portabler Lunchbox
Von David Darts stammt die so genannte Pirate Box. Damit wird es möglich, ohne übers Internet gehen zu müssen, Daten zu tauschen und zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Pirate Box erstellt ein eigenes WLAN-Netzwerk in das sich jeder, der sich in Reichweite befindet, einloggen kann und über den Browser Daten zur Verfügung stellt oder downloadet. Dadurch bleibt der User anonym und es werden keine IPs oder andere persönliche Informationen ins Netz übertragen. iPhone profits swamp competitors
Now that the flurry of earnings from the last months of 2010 have been announced by all the major mobile phone manufacturers, Horace Dediu of Asymco has summarized these figures in several stunning graphs. The market analysis company has compared the market shares, sales shares and profit shares of the top eight mobile phone manufacturers in the world. While Nokia and Samsung lead in market share and in sales share, Apple thoroughly trounced them all when it comes to profit shares.

Google speeds in-house mobile app work to counter Apple
Google is planning to rapidly accelerate the number of mobile apps it makes in a bid to counter the iPhone's more popular choice as an app platform, insiders claimed Monday. Soviet-era films being sold illegally on iTunes, say firms
A series of Soviet-era movies are being sold illegally on iTunes via the App Store, the BBC reports. These include titles like Assa, Gentlemen of Fortune, The Diamond Arm, Kin-dza-dza and Cheburashaka. Despite being produced under communism, both studio Mosfilm and the Joint State Film Collection are asserting copyright. Mosfilm is said to be preparing a formal claim to submit to Apple, which insists it will act when it receives a complaint.

Sony adds Mac softwaret to Bloggie Touch HD cameras
Sony recently released a software update for its Bloggie Touch HD cameras that will finally allow users to easily manage and upload their photos and videos. Active Storage uncovers ActiveSAN server tech
Putting an end to speculation, Active Storage has announced the ActiveSAN, a new rackmount server. The hardware can be used on Xsan and StorNext networks, and is described as a 1U device with a Nehalem Xeon processor, 8GB of RAM, a Fibre Channel link and quick-removable power supplies. A public demo is planned for April's NAB 2011 convention, with a release in the second quarter of 2011.

Intel finds hard flaw in Sandy Bridge chipset, delays PCs
Intel this morning warned of a serious bug with the Cougar Point chipset that would force it to delay desktop PCs using its Sandy Bridge processors. Those using the 6 series have a flaw that gradually degrades the performance of the SATA ports over time, eventually affecting the speed of hard drives and optical drives. The issue was in hardware and needed a reworking at the factory for a fix.

Intel finds Sandy Bridge chipset design flaw, shipments stopped and recalls beginning
A problem requiring a "silicon fix" is bad news in the chipset business, and sadly that's what Intel is announcing. Its new Intel 6 Series chipset, Cougar Point, has been found to have a flaw, something to do with the SATA controller. Intel is indicating that the ports can "degrade over time," leading to poor i/o performance down the road. Verizon drops some Android phones to $100 ahead of iPhone
Verizon today started up a sale on its smartphone lineup ahead of its iPhone launch. Some of its most important devices, including the HTC Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2, and both Samsung's Continuum and Fascinate, have had their prices drop by as much as half to $100. A number of popular Russian films from the Soviet era are being sold as apps without the consent of the copyright holders, according to a new report. Keep your iPad 2 display hopes reasonable
The iPad 2 will not have a "retina display." That's the realization that most people have been coming to for some time now. Not long after the iPhone 4 came out, I read an article which mentioned the very significant challenges in bringing such a high resolution screen to a display the size of the The iPad.
John Paczkowski over at AllThingsD cites a report originally from AppleInsider suggesting the iPad 2 "will feature the same 1024×768 resolution display as its predecessor."

Adobe's Packager to be updated for iPad support
Adobe is reportedly working to update its Packager for iPhone and will launch it in a new version of the popular Adobe Creative Suite bundle. Packager for iPhone is a utility included into Adobe Flash Professional CS5 and the Adobe AIR SDK that lets Flash developers export their Flash-based applications to the iOS platform. The updated version of Packager for iPhone is rumored to include support for the iPad as well as new Android devices. The tool will also improve touch support by including gestures such as pinch to zoom.

Researchers at Canalys suggested a historic milestone in smartphones today as it claimed Android had overtaken Symbian for the best-selling platform. Google's OS represented 32.9 percent of smartphones shipped in the fall and passed Nokia, whose slipping share brought it down from 44.4 percent to 30.6 percent. WikiLeaks: Julian Assange droht mit Megaleak als letzten Ausweg

Scientists stumble upon bomb-sniffing laser with a boomerang effect
You might think of a laser as light forced into a single, directed beam, but scientists have recently discovered that if you fire a laser in one direction, the air itself can fire another right back. Using a 226nm UV pump laser, researchers at Princeton University managed to excite oxygen atoms to the point that they emit infrared light along the same channel as the original beam, except this time pointed back where it came from. Since the return beam's chemistry depends on the particles in the air to generate the return beam, the "backward laser" could potentially carry the signature of those particles back to the source and help identify them there. HTC Thunderbolt rumored to be hitting Best Buy February 14th, sans mobile hotspot or Skype video?
The HTC Thunderbolt may have been officially announced way back at CES, but there's still quite a bit we don't know about the phone -- namely, a price or a release date. We now at least have what looks to be a fairly solid hint of the latter, however, courtesy of the above shot of a Best Buy inventory screen that lists an in stock date of February 14th. Woz backs white iPhone camera issue, compliments Android
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak during his time as a guest on the Engadget Show supported suspicions that the white iPhone 4's numerous delays might be blamed on the camera. Having bought the official but never shipped original parts from Fei Lam, he found that any photo taken with the flash on looked as though it were taken through cellophane from the spilled-out light. Earlier rumors had the white-painted glass both leaking light and possibly reflecting too much of the light.

Golden Gate Bridge plans to collect all tolls electronically by September 2012
San Francisco's world-famous Golden Gate Bridge looks much like this right now, but come September 2012 the last of those yellow "cash" signs are scheduled to wink out. That's because the bridge's board of directors voted 13-2 to approve a $2.9 million plan to replace the bridge's 30 full-time human tolltakers with an all-electronic system. Analyst: iPad 2 has 1.2GHz dual-core chip, 5m shipping Q1
The next iPad's hardware was given unusually detailed specifications through a new note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at Concord Securities. He supported beliefs that the Apple tablet would have a dual-core, ARM Cortex-A9 but suggested that it would clock in at 1.2GHz, a significant step up from the 1GHz single-core A8 used today. The performance would put it on par with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon and NVIDIA's upcoming Tegra 2 3D.

iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad owners who'd like to remotely control their Mac or Windows machine with full audio and video streaming now have another solution available in Splashtop Remote.
