GMC's SATIMO ATS system spins a Denali right round to ensure proper antenna placement (video)
As a certain company knows quite well, finding the right place to put an antenna can be harder than it looks. Rather than just slap one on the roof and call it a day, General Motors has created the SATIMO ATS, a near-field antenna testing system of the sort we're used to spying in all those FCC photos. USA Today sees iPad app as "real positive" for industry
While many newspapers are struggling financially and trying to figure out how to move from paper and ink to digital content, it appears that Gannett's USA Today is doing quite well on the iPad.
Last August, the paper was in the midst of a restructuring and cut 130 staff members. At that time, USA Today made a commitment of resources to the iPad app. Now The Telegraph is reporting that the app is turning out to be a boon to USA Today. Gracia Martore, COO of Gannett, said on Monday that "The iPad has been a real positive for USA Today," and will "translate into a much more significant improvement" in revenues.

The Beatles just 'LOVE' iTunes
The Beatles/Cirque du Soleil collaborative "LOVE" is available for pre-order through iTunes. The $12.99 album will be released on February 8 with two bonus tracks, and based on the page for the album, none of the tracks will be available for individual sale. The documentary behind the show, "All Together Now," will also be sold for $9.99. As with the previous Beatles digital releases, this appears to be exclusive to iTunes.

iTunes gets exclusive Beatles LOVE album, documentary
Apple has announced that the iTunes Store will soon be carrying two exclusive Beatles titles, the LOVE album and a documentary called All Together Now; pre-orders begin today. On iTunes LOVE will include previously unreleased versions of "The Fool on the Hill" and "Girl," as well as iTunes LP features like a gallery of the Beatles and the album's namesake stage production. Cirque du Soleil has been performing LOVE in Las Vegas since 2006.

Some Toyota car audio systems not working with iPhone in Australia
Australian newspapers are reporting today that Toyota is contacting more than 200 dealers to let them know that iPhones and iPod touch models running iOS 4.1 are locking up the audio systems of 2009 and 2010 cars. Models having problems include the Yaris, Corolla and Prius.
The glitch is somewhere between the iOS software and radios supplied by Fujitsu Ten. When drivers plug their iOS device in, the screen gets stuck on the word 'load' and then the radio locks up and will no longer operate until the iPhone is removed. Owners can listen to their Apple device using the headphone jack, but using the custom Apple USB interface simply won't work.

Airlines give out free in-flight Facebook for a month
Seven major airlines have teamed up with Gogo Inflight Internet to provide free access to Facebook during flights. Accessing other pages on the web, however, requires payment, ranging between $5 for short flights or $13 for long ones. Facebook is the most popular place visited on the Gogo network and is being used as a promo to drive adoption of in-air Internet use.

Lawsuit claims AT&T "systematically" overcharges iPhone, iPad owners
A lawsuit filed in California federal court claims AT&T "systematically" overcharged iPhone and iPad owners by inflating the amount of data downloaded by each customer and tacking on "phantom traffic" to the month-long tally. The lawsuit was filed by Patrick Hendricks who asserts AT&T charged him a $15 overage fee that was the result of this artificially inflated data. Hendricks cites AT&T's alleged practice of overestimating data traffic by as much as 300% in what is described as "a rigged gas pump that charges for a full gallon when it pumps only nine-tenths of a gallon into your car's tank."

Comcast, Time Warner deal ensures TNT, TBS shows for VOD, live streaming
Comcast announced live streaming to its iPad and (upcoming) Android Xfinity TV apps was not far off last month, and now it's announced a new long term deal with Time Warner that brings more content to all of its TV Everywhere-related efforts. That means shows from TNT, TBS, CNN, HLN, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim on Xfinity TV.com, cable VOD and mobile apps and the addition of live streaming video later this year as part of a larger agreement between Time Warner and Comcast. Apple pushes iOS 4.3 beta 3 to developers
Apple has released a third beta of iOS 4.3 via the iOS Dev Center. As anticipated, the new code is listed as build 8F5166b. Developers can download a bundle of Xcode 3.2.6 and the new SDK, as well as separate firmware distributions for the iPad, the iPhone 4 and 3GS, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch.

News: Apple sued (again) over iOS privacy concerns
Apple has been sued yet again over the alleged sharing of Unique Device Identifiers (UDIDs) and user information, according to an InformationWeek report. Hunting for open GameKit solutions
On iOS, GameKit offers a simple way for applications to connect to each other using ad-hoc peer-to-peer communication without having to be connected to a common network. Despite its name, GameKit has been used for many non-gaming purposes as well as for games. These include contact information exchanges, media sharing, device-to-device presentations, and so forth.
It's surprising, therefore, that Apple has not introduced a computer-based standard to allow Mac and Windows computers to participate in this information exchange (let alone Android and Blackberry devices) using the common GameKit programming frameworks.

Nielsen: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone in rare three-way tie
Nielsen in its US smartphone market share update called a rare three-way draw. The iPhone barely maintained its recent lead at the end of last year with 28 percent but was virtually even with Android and BlackBerry, both of which had 27 percent. The trend supported notions that Android was often cannibalizing BlackBerry sales as RIM had fallen over 10 percent from a year ago where Android grew from virtual non-existence in the same time frame.

It's been a busy day for App Store watchers. With a New York Times article last night citing in-app book purchasing as a key issue in the rejection of the Sony Reader app, and Apple's later non-clarifying clarification of the company's policy on parity for purchasing in and out of apps, we're all left a bit confused. Google Latitude received a major update that saw it hop on the bandwagon mostly created by Foursquare. The feature now has check-ins to help locate friends and allows attaching photos with captions. No change in App Store guidelines, Apple insists
The rejection of the Sony Reader app does not represent a change in App Store rules, an Apple spokeswoman claims. A New York Times report suggested that the ban represents a "further tightening" of Apple's control of the App Store, blocking access to purchases made outside of the store's ecosystem. Google said to be hiring 'dozens' to boost Android app development
We've already heard of some changes that Google's planning to make to boost app purchases in the Android Market, and it looks like it's now also undertaking a considerable in-house effort to increase the number of quality apps that are available. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google is planning to hire "dozens" of software engineers, product managers, user-interface experts and "others who have ideas for mobile apps," and it's apparently already shifted some of its current employees to work in this new "apps lab." Schmidt dodges talk of becoming future Apple CEO
Google chairman Eric Schmidt is sidestepping discussion of whether he might become the next Apple CEO. "In the first place, it's not appropriate. Google accuses Bing of 'cheating,' piggybacking off its search results
You could say Bing is taking a cue from its competition, but it seems to be more literally taking search results as well. Google Fellow Amit Singhal is claiming so much and has provided some amusing (if not totally clever) results from its "Bing Sting." Panasonic prices its CES compact cameras, camcorders
Panasonic on Tuesday revealed pricing for its HD still and video cameras introduced at CES, including the 3MOS HD camcorders and FH-series point and shoots, among others. The 3MOS sensor-equipped HDC-HS900 will have a $1,400 price tag, the TM900 $1,100 and the SD800 $850. Sony's Bloggie Touch software now available for Mac
To the delight of Mac users out there who own Bloggie Touch pocket camcorders, Sony has just released a Mac version of the camera's onboard software which was previously only available for PCs. It allows you to view and edit video, as well as upload it to multiple online platforms like YouTube, Facebook, or Flickr.

Visa kündigte heute in einer Presseaussendung den Start eines NFC-basierten Bezahlsystems fürs iPhone in Europa an, was wir natürlich spannend finden, denn ums coole Wedeln mit dem Nahfunkchip-Handy an der Kasse beneiden wir die Japaner insgeheim schon lange. Leider hat die Geschichte eine Reihe von Einschränkungen, beginnend mit dem iCard-Dongle von Wireless Dynamics, den man aufs iPhone stecken muss, weil das Teil ja selbst keinen NFC-Chip besitzt. Und am dicken Ende lauert dann noch die Ansage, dass Europa in diesem Fall bedeutet: Italien, Frankreich, Polen, Schweiz, Türkei und Großbritannien. Pffff.

Samsung experiencing a 16 percent return rate on the Galaxy Tab?
Just a few days back, Samsung announced it had moved around 2 million Galaxy Tabs in the latter part of 2010. According to new data released by ITG Investment Research using tracked point-of-sale info, however, the story is a little more complicated. The company tracked about 6,000 retail stores in the United States from the November date of release of the tab through January 15th, and the return rate hovered around 13 percent, rising even further -- to about 16 percent -- with holiday sales returns. Samsung insists misquoted, Galaxy Tab sales 'quite smooth'
Samsung on Tuesday disputed claims that it had said its Galaxy Tab sales were well below shipments. Third iOS 4.3 beta due later on Tuesday?
Apple is already planning to release a third beta of iOS 4.3, which should come out later today, a source at Apple claims. Although the code is allegedly using the build number 8F5166b, nothing is so far known about the content of the update. Boy Genius Report suggests that Apple will be releasing iOS 4.3 beta 3 today to developers. According to their sources, the release will be build number 8F5166b and, as BGR mentions, will be the third release in so many weeks if it appears today. Apple must be keen to get this update out the door.
Beta 2 was released on January 19 and is rumored to have a PhotoStream service, iPad FaceTime support, PhotoBooth apps for iOS. Here's hoping Apple's rapid development gets this OS into out hot little hands soon.

Absatz von Grafikchips bricht zum Jahresende ein

iOS now two percent of web traffic, Chrome cracks 10 percent
Mobile Apple hardware reached a milestone today as new findings showed iOS cracking two percent share of the web for the first time. The iPad, iPhone and iPod reached 2.06 percent of Net Applications' traffic study worldwide and were in even higher use in certain areas. In English-native and other more mobile-driven countries, the share was disproportionately higher, ranging from 3.4 percent in the US to almost 10 percent in Singapore.

The CEO of Netgear, Patrick Lo, has apologized for some remarks about Steve Jobs made in the midst of criticizing Apple business practices. "Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform," Lo said at one point during a lunch in Sydney, Australia. Modder adds FPS-style ammo counter to automatic weapon
It may not be the first time than an actual weapon has been equipped with an FPS-style ammo counter (or Aliens pulse rifle-style, if you prefer), but this add-on device built by the DIY-minded Michael Ciuffo is certainly still plenty impressive enough to garner some attention on its own. It simply uses an accelerometer to detect the recoil from the gun, and it can apparently be adjusted for use on a variety of different weapons. Galaxy Tab return rate as high as 15 percent
The fallout surrounding the Galaxy Tab has been compounded as a new study has suggested Samsung is losing a significant number of its customers. Tracking by ITG since mid-November suggests that the return rate for the Android tablet is as high as 15 percent. Apple's iPad in contrast saw just a two percent return rate and hinted that there was brewing dissatisfaction with the Galaxy Tab.

Motorola's Atrix 4G HD Multimedia Dock spotted online next to a $60 price tag
We can't say we make a habit of checking out Fommy.com or Mobile City Online's digital shelves when searching for our mobile gear, but these obscure retailers look to be the first to come out with pricing for the Atrix 4G's HD Multimedia Dock. Fommy lists it as a straight up $59.95 charge, whereas its direct competitor is already discounting the cradle down to $49.99. Zyxel this morning gave fresh competition to the MiFi with the MWR211. The pocket 3G router is a carrier-independent option and should share most any USB modem over 802.11n Wi-Fi. TUAW's Daily App: Legendary Wars
I got to see Legendary Wars at Macworld last week, and it's a fun title. It has a good mix of many different game genres and a lot of solid game content to explore. At its core, Legendary Wars is a fantasy-based real-time strategy game, but there's a Plants vs. Zombies feel to it as you summon various fantasy creatures and send them off to fight against the bad guys. That's the core gameplay, but there are lots and lots of different variants on it, from a tower defense spin-off to some more action-based levels, and even a Canabalt-style running level.

Another firmware update grants Roku owners USB channel, MKV containers come along
If you have a Roku player with a USB port, like the XDS above, you've been able to play media directly from USB storage for some time now using third-party channels. For whatever reason it's taken Roku this long to get an official USB playback channel on there, allowed in the latest firmware (2.9 build 1529) and finally available for download in the Channel Store. We're told that MKV playback has also been added, which might make watching those downloaded Top Gear episodes a little easier.

Boxee's Netflix update delayed due to security issues
Boxee delayed its Netflix update a second time today over technical issues. The streaming movie service was already running on the app and the Boxee Box but hadn't yet met Netflix's "security requirements" for copy protection, the company's Andrew Kippen said. Intel Sandy Bridge chipset flaw pinpointed
The Intel Sandy Bridge flaw that is affecting the Cougar Point chipset variants has been pinpointed. A phone call between Intelís VP and Director of Intel Client PC Operations and Enabling, Steve Smith and Anand Lai Shimpi of Anandtech has revealed that this issue lies with a transistor in the 3Gbps PLL clocking tree. The transistor is leaking current, which can cause the 3Gbps SATA ports to lose performance or fail completely. The 6Gbps ports are unaffected by the issue as they have independent clocking trees.

According to the New York Times, Apple has rejected Sony's Reader app from the App Store, and the Times speculates Amazon's popular Kindle app may also get the axe in the near future. The supposed reasoning behind this move is that Apple has decided apps can no longer sell content or allow access to content sold outside the App Store or via Apple's in-app purchasing mechanism.
If true, this is a highly questionable move on Apple's part, and one that seems pretty difficult to justify. Apple could potentially paint this as protecting consumers from malicious content (i.e., viruses) or unscrupulous app developers looking to bilk users out of money, then say that it's just applying the same rules to everyone by disall

Apple has locked out the Sony Reader app from the App Store for violating its store rules policy, according to a report. The Sony Reader app has already made its debut on the Android Market and was expected to appear on the iOS platform. The reason for the rejection, according to the New York Times, is that the Sony Reader app would have directed users outside of the Apple ecosystem allowing them to purchase their content directly from Sony. IntoNow identifies TV shows by sound, connects fans
Using a technology called SoundPrint, a company called IntoNow has launched a free iOS app that identifies what TV show you are watching, tells you more about it, publishes a notice to the social network of your choice and lets friends or strangers who are watching the same show connect. The information can also be used to help guide viewers to other shows they would enjoy based on what they are already watching, and easily add shows to a Netflix queue or buy through iTunes.

Visa tests iPhone payment system in Europe
Visa has reportedly started testing a trial deployment of its iPhone-based payment system for a limited number of customers residing in Europe. Boxee delays Netflix integration again, cites security requirements as the culprit
We hoped Boxee would surprise us at the eleventh hour and announce it had finally added Netflix to the service -- technically making good on its end of January deadline. Instead, the company's blog is now reporting that the service is "anticipated soon." In addition to a demo of the software on our livestream, we also chatted with the developer about how SuperSync (which allows you to share and view multiple iTunes libraries across PCs and platforms) was doing lately. APX Alarm becomes Vivint as it expands into Z-Wave home automation
Heard of APX Alarm Security Solution? Probably not. But that's ok, it's par for the course when discussing home automation, a market segment mostly ignored by the big boys of consumer electronics. Today APX is making a grand entrance into home automation thanks to a $443 million investment by Goldman Sachs. According to Macgasm, Netgear CEO Patrick Lo has clarified his earlier statement about Steve Jobs's ego. On Monday, Lo made reference to Steve Jobs "going away" soon, which most commentators (including us) found to be a fairly unsavory remark given the Apple CEO's health issues. "I deeply regret the choice of words I used in relation to business decisions Apple must grapple with in the future in relation to open vs. closed systems, which have been construed by some to be references to Steve Jobs' health and which was never my intention," Lo said. Apple posts Verizon iPhone firmware 4.2.6
Apple has released an updated iPhone firmware for Verizon iPhones only -- despite the fact that this model isn't even available yet, reports MacRumors. The company demonstrated iPhone 4s running iOS 4.2.5 at the public launch earlier this month, but this is the first general release of software specifically for the Verizon iPhone. The download does not include any notes about what, if any, changes have been made since the 4.2.5 version, and speculation continues on when Apple will release iOS 4.3, currently at Beta 2, for both AT&T and Verizon iPhones.

Best Buy discounting 3G iPads by $30
North American retail chain Best Buy has begun discounting 3G iPads on their US site, taking $30 off the $130 premium those units normally cost over the Wi-Fi only models. All three capacities (16, 32 and 64GB) are affected by the sale, which has no set end-date, reports 9to5Mac. Due to Apple's advertising guidelines, the iPads are listed at their normal price on the item-description page, but with the extra moniker of "on sale." We've had a feeling that LG was going to tackle 3D smartphones heads-on sometime in February, and after a spat of rumors today purported to be showing off the Optimus 3D (pictured above, via Phandroid), the company's flat-out confirmed its Mobile World Congress debut. New Apple Store window display "floats" MacBook Air
A clever new window display at one of the New York City Apple stores (and perhaps elsewhere) appears to show a MacBook Air hanging from a helium balloon with the tagline "so light, it floats." While the ballon is of course suspended by thin clear wires, the illusion has been effective at fooling at least some commenters on YouTube, where the standard-definition version of a video of the display (below), shot by Courtney Boyd Myers of The Next Web makes it difficult to see the suspending wires.

Hackers increasingly using telnet for attacks, port 23 looking younger than ever
You can't always just hang around waiting for the next big Microsoft security update. Sometimes you have to go and make your own destiny -- even if it means probing a few dusty ports. That's apparently the mantra of modern hackers who are, according to Akamai, increasingly looking back at telnet as a means to gain unapproved access to systems of all shapes and sizes. Admins of course should be relying on SSH for such remote shell access, far more secure, but apparently many like to keep port 23 open for old time's sake. Green-screen nostalgia is, apparently, a dangerous thing.

iOS Safari receiving Google instant preview support
Formerly only for desktop browser searches, 9 to 5 Mac is reporting that Google "Instant Previews" is being rolled out for mobile Safari users as well. This new service allows iOS Safari users to get a quick visual preview of sites within their search results without having to actually click through and wait for the pages to load. Previews of search results are displayed like a slideshow, allowing users to flick through the different pages in typical iOS fashion. Google has not formally announced the new feature yet and not every device has it as of this writing -- my own iPhone included.

TrueHDR adds Geo-tagging and drops to $0.99 for a limited time
As a frequent landscape photographer, I've enjoyed exploring HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging for quite some time. With HDR, your camera takes multiple images, usually at different shutter speeds, to capture both bright and dark areas at their best. Then the images are combined with software. Although most of my work is with a Canon DSLR, I've been impressed with some of the iPhone HDR apps that can help you get some really nice pictures under difficult lighting conditions.
Although Apple includes HDR software in the iPhone 4, I've found that both Pro HDR and TrueHDR can give superior results.

Galaxy Tab: Verkaufszahlen an Kunden deutlich geringer
Als Samsung Anfang Dezember bekanntgab, dass man eine Million Exemplare des Galaxy Tab binnen sechs Wochen verkaufen konnte, wurde das Android-Tablet schnell als „iPad-Killer“ betitelt. Vor wenigen Wochen dann gab das Unternehmen bekannt, dass bis Ende Dezember zwei Millionen Stück verkauft wurden.
