Motorola may foist custom UI on Xoom post-launch
Motorola may make Xoom users get its custom Motoblur interface after the tablet launches. European Android product manager Jonathan Nattrass said in an interview that the tablet would use pure Android 3.0 to start but get a "social aspect" from Motorola in an update later on. He didn't tell CNET whether this meant a full customized interface, if it would be limited to widgets or if it would be strictly optional.

AGF adds to list of available Verizon iPhone 4 cases
AG Findings has announced that its Vandelay cases and Beetle cases are fully compatible with the iPhone 4 variant that will soon be sold through Verizon. The company tested the two cases after Verizon's iPhone 4 launch and found both lines to be fully compatible with the slightly different design, with the added bonus of being on the market ahead of the phone's launch.

Apple patent application details magical mouse with a built-in display
Could the Magic Mouse be replaced by an even more "magical" input device? It might, if a just-published Apple patent application ever results in an actual product. Described simply as a "computer input device including a display device," the application clearly details a mouse that would have both a touch-sensitive surface and a built-in display. That, the application suggestions, could open up a whole range of new input possibilities, including using the mouse as numeric keypad, a phone, a personal digital assistant, or a graphics pad, to name just a few. Vintcase: An iPad case Indiana Jones would want to own
Here at TUAW, we see an endless parade of iPad and iPhone cases. I mean, seriously -- if I see another carbon copy plastic or silicone case for an iPad, I may toss my breakfast. So when someone sends me something a bit out of the ordinary, I'll usually take notice.
That was the situation when I received an email a few weeks ago from a gentleman who pointed me to the website for his company, Vintcase. In his email, he said that they made "the most beautiful, awesome, gorgeous, amazing, classy and wonderful iPad case made on Earth (and beyond)." All hyperbole aside, a look at the website revealed a very beautiful leather case that reminded me of one of those satchels that Indiana Jones might carry his travel papers in.

An HD version of Agile Messenger, a mobile instant messaging client, has been released for the iPad. The multi-protocol client provides access to a variety of messaging networks included ICQ, AOL, Yahoo, MSN, Facebook and GoogleTalk. iCADMac launched with DWG file support, 2D/3D CAD capable
ProgeCAD has announced iCADMac, positioning the new software as an alternative to Autodesk's AutoCAD. The new software is capable of both 2D and 3D CAD functionality and fully supports the Autodesk DWG file format. It is based on ACIS and supports ACIS Solid Modeling libraries, while PDF to DWG conversion and PDF export are also supported.

Samsung Vibrant's Android 2.2 update now available, it seems
As promised, it seems that T-Mobile's version of the Vibrant is getting Froyo today after a brutally long wait. The good news is that you won't need to wait for a staggered rollout, apparently -- but the bad news is that currently you'll need to get it using Samsung's Kies Mini PC app, not over-the-air. iOS 4.3 beta suggests 1-megapixel camera for iPad 2
Adding to the growing collection of iPad 2 rumors, 9to5 Mac has done a bit of digging into the latest SDK to find a listing that says the iPad 2 will have a back-facing 1-megapixel camera. This is only slightly higher quality than the camera in the current-generation iPod touch. The front is suppose to be a VGA camera, just like the one in the iPhone 4 and iPod touch.
Sources have told the site that K94, the name of the folder where the listing was found in the SDK, is the iPad 2's codename.

HTC profits leaping and bounding up, Peter Chou promises tablet and production expansion

Apple Canada offers deal on refurb iPads
Apple Canada's online store is now offering a "special limited time" price on refurbished iPads. Only 16, 32 and 64GB Wi-Fi models are available, at prices of $479, $549 and $649, respectively. The deal is however substantially cheaper than buying new, which would normally cost between $549 and $749 despite parity between the US and Canadian dollars.

Apple responds to critics of Chinese working conditions
Apple has reiterated company policy regarding the use of Chinese component suppliers and said it is "committed to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility throughout our supply base," according to Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu quoted in Macworld today. The company says it requires all suppliers to agree to Apple's code of conduct before any contracts are signed.

Toshiba launches Flashy tablet teaser site, still doesn't have a name for said tablet
Nope, Toshiba's recently announced Android 3.0 tablet doesn't have a name yet, but it does have its own Flash-based website. The site doesn't reveal anything all that new about the device -- we already knew it had a Tegra 2 processor, replaceable battery, and a 1280 x 800-resolution, 10.1-inch display -- however, it does provide a pretty nice tour of the tablet with a 360 view of the hardware. AT&T giving out free MicroCells, may tier LTE by speed
Two leaks on Friday have detailed some of AT&T's plans both to accommodate oversaturation on its 3G network and to segment its 4G network. One slip has revealed that AT&T will hand out free 3G MicroCell routers to the 7.5 percent of customers likely to have poor indoor reception. The only limit Engadget noted was a one-year contract specific to the femtocell; breaking the term would cost the newly raised $200 price minus $16.67 per month for every month the user remains with AT&T.

Apple's iPad strategy: Cutting off competitors, or just learning their lesson?
Falling into the "no, duh" category, Business Insider, citing a 9to5 Mac article, says that the main reason the forthcoming iPad 2 will undercut the emerging plethora of Android-powered tablets is because Apple has already cornered the market on manufacturers and has enlisted more to produce the tablet. The number of PCB suppliers, according to reports, has risen from three to seven. Business Insider points out that Apple did the same thing with the iPod just a few years ago, making it harder for competitors to get their hands on supplies.

Evidence of Duke Nukem Forever's existence continues to mount with new trailer, release date
Gearbox Software promised last fall that they'd finally, really finish and release Duke Nukem Forever, and it's starting to look like they're actually going to come through. The studio has just released a full trailer for the game, and it's announced something that many though they'd never see: a release date. Assuming nothing goes horribly awry in the next few months, you can expect the game to hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on May 3rd in North America, and May 6th worldwide. Health care and aeronautics industries agree that FCC should set aside bandwidth for dedicated remote patient monitoring system
Mobile body area network (MBAN) technology has the potential to be a boon to the healthcare system of the future by enabling remote patient monitoring through disposable wireless devices -- meaning less doctor visits for everyone and great news for latrophobes. Tennessee school requires iPads of all 4th-12th grade students
Starting next year, fourth to 12th grade students attending the Webb School in Knoxville, Tennessee will be required to have an iPad for classes. Jim Manikais, technology director at the private school, said this new policy was designed to let students "use that technology whenever they need it." Currently, students have to "check out a cart, a laptop cart, or schedule lab time to take a class to a lab" which made it difficult for both teachers and students to use technology regularly in the classroom. The school has a three-year rental plan for parents who are unable to purchase an iPad. This payment plan will cost about $200 per academic year or $20 per month for the ten-month school year.

Labels, stores make world copyright base for digital music
Music labels including EMI and Universal said on Friday that they were working on an international copyright licensing base that would significantly accelerate the spread of online music. The consulting group Deloitte has been tasked with creating a global repertoire database that would show which individual or label owned the rights to a given song. New Cydia release makes re-jailbreaking easier
Saurik released a major update to Cydia that includes a new Manage Account feature. Though it won't help you jailbreak your device, the new version of Cydia will make it easier when you need to re-install your favorite jailbreak applications. Similar to the Mac App Store, this Cydia account lets you keep track of both downloaded and purchased applications. This is a much-needed feature that iOS 4 unfortunately still lacks.

iOS devices hit 65 percent of Apple sales
iOS devices now account for approximately 65 percent of Apple's sales, says Asymco's Horace Dediu. He remarks that together, just the iPhone and the iPad generated about $15 billion in revenue during the company's fiscal first quarter. Where Apple's money comes from
According to a report of Asymco, the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch collectively generated sales of about US$17.3 billion which accounts for 65% of Apple's overall sales in its latest reported quarter. Of the three iOS devices, the iPhone and iPad combined for $15 billion in revenue while the iPod generated $2.3 billion. Spotify reportedly signs US deal with Sony
Just a week ago, we covered a New York Post story indicating that Spotify, the ad-supported or subscription based all-you-can-eat music streaming service, was about to sign a deal with Sony Music in the U.S. -- taking Spotify a step closer to the U.S. market.
Now, according to MediaMemo, that deal has now gone through. Though both Spotify and Sony have declined to comment, it's reported that a deal -- similar in terms to Spotify's European music label deals -- has been reached.

Logitech unveils couch-ready M515 mouse
Logitech on Friday rolled out a mouse aimed chiefly at the home theater computer audience. iOS 4.3 code suggests iPod touch-level cameras on next iPad
The second-generation iPad may use cameras closer to those on the fourth-generation iPod touch than those on the iPhone 4, code in the iOS 4.3 beta is said to imply. Within an AVCaptureSession PLIST file is a string referring to a "Back Facing 1MP Photo." The front-facing camera is listed as using VGA resolution, in keeping with both the iPhone and the Touch.

XBMC comes to iPad, iPhone, Apple TV
The team behind the Xbox Media Center has released two versions of the software for jailbroken iOS devices. XBMC is a more flexible media center platform, for instance supporting audio and video formats either omitted or deliberately blocked by hardware manufacturers. In the case of iOS devices users are also no longer limited to sharing via iTunes; the second-generation Apple TV becomes capable of streaming video in 1080p, suggesting that the standard 720p limit is artificially imposed.

More evidence shows Google may have copied Oracle in Android
Oracle's claims that Google copied Sun's Java code without permission in Android may have gained fuel on Friday. A separate search by Florian Mueller of the code (ZIP) has found more files than Oracle itself cited that appear to lift code directly. Among them, six files attached to Android 2.2 and 3.0 appear to have been extracted from Sun's Java source code using a decompiler and simply grafted into the just-in-time Dalvik engine Android uses at its root.

HTC surges 160% thanks to Android, to ship 8.5m phones in Q1
HTC on Friday said its profit jumped 160 percent in the fall as part of record business it expected to accelerate this year. Its decision to focus on Android for almost all of 2010 saw it reach a net profit of $501.2 million. AT&T to start up phone trade-ins on January 23
New details of AT&T's service plan revamp have leaked on Friday and now point to a trade-in program. Under the terms, customers could turn in a phone from any carrier either for direct credit on a new phone or else get a check, donate the credit to charity or recycle the device. The only condition spotted by BGR was that the phone had to be in working order to qualify for some deals.

There is a new trend starting in interactive children's media: books that don't really tell a fully formed story, but are meant to teach a lesson. As with many new ideas, the first ones are pretty rough and may not be worth bothering with, but the potential is vast.

Oops: Android contains directly copied Java code, strengthening Oracle's case
Florian Mueller has been killing it these past few months with his analysis of various tech patent suits on his FOSSpatents blog, and today he's unearthed a pretty major bombshell: at least 43 Android source files that appear to have been directly copied from Java. That's a big deal, seeing as Oracle is currently suing Google for patent and copyright infringement in Android -- which isn't a hard case to prove when you've got 37 Android source files marked "PROPRIETARY / CONFIDENTIAL" and "DO NOT DISTRIBUTE" by Oracle / Sun and at least six more files in Froyo and Gingerbread that appear to have been decompiled from Java 2 Standard Edition and redistributed under the Apache open source license without permission. Das kommende iPad 2 könnte mit einem Annäherungssensor ausgestattet sein, um zum Beispiel das Display an- bzw. auszuschalten, wenn man den Deckel des Cases öffnet oder schließt. Es ist bald Mobile World Congress. Und ufern natürlich die Gerüchte aus, um neue Smartphones. Auf der CES völlig abwesend fehlt uns vor allem ein Überblick über Nokia. Die kommen, so jedenfalls Prosessori auf Finland, endlich mit dem N9 und das soll eine Überraschung haben: ein 1,2GHz Intel Atom Prozessor. Asahi Glass zeigt mit Dragontail massive Gorilla Glas Konkurrenz (Video)

Zur Zeit scheint Gorilla Glas noch unbestritten erste Wahl zu sein, wenn es um unbrechbar scheinendes Wunderwerk zur Bildschirmschonung geht. Aber Asahi Glass will es damit aufnehmen und bringt Dragontail. Da kann man drauf rumscratchen wie man will, es lässt sich mit 60 Kilo biegen ohne zu brechen, und mit einem Hammer kann man auch mal rangehen um seiner letzten Smartphonefrustation Ausdruck zu geben. Sony Ericsson: Rundum erholt dank Android und mit großen X-Plänen

Sony Ericsson hat seine Tiefphase überwunden und in im 4ten Quartal zumindest wieder Plus gemacht. Aber es gab mehr zu berichten. Windows und Symbian sind vergessen und es wird wohl nur noch Android Handys geben. 9 Millionen Xperia sind sind in den letzten 9 Monaten über den Ladentisch gegangen und x-mal mehr soll es 2011 geben, sowohl High-End als auch in billiger, was auch einen weiteren Ausbau der Mini-Linie bedeutet. Dual-Prozessor-Handys werden kommen, ein weiteres Tablet wie so viele andere wagen sie aber nicht anzukündigen. HTC Leaks: Die nächste Generation drängt ans Licht

Es scheint so als wäre das tastenlose Honeycomb HTC, das wir vor einer Woche entdeckt haben, nicht allein. Immer mehr Leaks aus dieser Serie tauchen auf, die einen guten Überblick über die kommende Serie der HTC Smartphones liefert. MSI Wind Tablet mit integriertem Projektor (Video)

Wir haben die ganz große Tablet-Schwemme ja gerade erst hinter uns, dank CES, aber eins hatten wir übersehen. HTC auf Erfolgskurs: 24,6 Millionen Handys in 2010

Satte 160% hat sich der Gewinn von HTC im letzten Quartal 2010 im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum gesteigert. Und das mit dem Verkauf von 24,6 Millionen Handys im ganzen Jahr, wodurch sie sich gegenüber 2009 mehr als verdoppelt haben. Es scheint jetzt auch in Zahlen klar was wir eh schon lange vermuten: HTC ist definitiv der neue Star am Android-Himmel. So wie oben soll übrigens die neue Firmenzentrale in Taipeh aussehen. Für dieses Jahr sieht es ja auch schon spannend aus.

NVIDIA schon zum MWC mit dem Tegra 3?

In einem Interview mit Hexus hat Mike Rayfield von NVIDIA erklärt, dass sie ihrem geplanten Releaseschedule von einem neuen Tegra pro Jahr recht nahe kommen und verspricht damit, dass es nicht mehr lange sein kann, bis wir Details vom Tegra 3 hören, denn Tegra 2 wurde zur CES vorgestellt, wir rechnen mit dem MWC mitte Februar. Tegra 3 soll schon in Produktion gehen, wenn die Konkurrenz mit ähnlichen Doppel-Prozessorchips auf den Markt kommt wie Tegra 2. Gorenje iChef: der ultimative Touchscreen-Ofen

Ein Backofen wirkt im Vergleich zu einem iPad ja irgendwie martialisch. Zumindest war das so, bis Gorenje auf LivingKitchen iChef vorgestellt hat. Dessen Touchscreen kann sich durchaus mit unseren Smartphones messen und erledigt mit ulkigen Programmen (SIMPLEbake, MYbake, etc.) alle Aufgaben eines Ofens mit ein paar lässigen Sweeps. YO! PALRO kann jetzt auch sprechen

Fujisofts PALRO-Roboter macht schon seit einiger Zeit lustige Gesten und interagiert, dass er aber, oder der Stimme nach zu beurteilen eher eine Sie, nun auch fließend Englisch kann, überzeugt. Nun kann man mit PALRO auch kommunizieren, aber nun bloß keine Kantianischen Diskurse über persönliche Maximen erwarten. Apple seeds first Mac OS X 10.6.7 beta to developers
Apple Insider reports that Apple seeded the first beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers on Thursday. The beta is Build 10J842 and weighs in at 338.6MB for download.
According to those familiar with the build, Apple indicates that there are no known issues, but developers have reportedly been encouraged to specifically test AirPort, Bonjour, SMB file sharing, and graphics drivers.

Mitsubishi launching eight electrified vehicles by 2015
Mitsu's i MiEV may be getting off to a slow start, but it's just the beginning. Camino, the open source web browser for Mac OS X, has released Camino 2.1 Alpha 1 -- the first preview release of the forthcoming Camino 2.1 update.
It's been just over a year since version 2.0 was released, and we can expect to see some great new features and improvements in the upcoming update. Most notably, version 2.1 comes with an enhanced location bar with auto-complete and an offline mode, too.
Other new features to expect are as follows:
Improved Plug-in Control: Camino now disables Java by default, and a new hidden preference allows disabling arbitrary plug-ins.
Status Bar: The status bar can now be hidden by choosing "Hide Status Bar" in "View" menu.

Apple sues Nokia in London over touch-screen scroll patent
Apple has sued Finland's Nokia over claims that one of its European patents for scrolling on a touch screen is not valid. The suit was filed in London's High Court earlier this week, and is the latest in the legal back-and-forth between Nokia and Apple.
In December of 2010, Nokia filed claims in three European countries, alleging that Apple infringed on 13 additional patents, in addition to 24 patents already descried in the existing US and International Trade Commission filings. We're finishing up our week of minimal game experiences with an app that's probably the "most game" of the lot. Shibuya is actually a puzzle game, but it's also pretty trippy.
The idea is that you must organize colors into stripes as they drop down the screen, and whenever two stripes of the same color touch, they get cleared off the board. The difficulty is that you aren't given the colors in the same order, so as the spikes drop, it's up to you to lay them all out correctly so that two like colors actually touch. It's a little tough to explain, but just playing it will allow you to figure it out. You basically have to think ahead about how you lay the colors out before they drop down to match themselves up.

Based on the number of active users of the official Windows Phone 7 Facebook app, The Next Web has estimated that Microsoft has notched up two million sales of Windows Phone 7 phones. 9 to 5 Mac hat in den Tiefen der neusten Developer Preview von iOS 4.3 weitere Hinweise zur iPad-Kamera entdeckt. Alles deutet darauf hin, dass Apple das iPad 2 mit den gleichen Kameras ausstatten wird, die schon beim iPod touch zum Einsatz kommen. Letzte Woche wurde bekannt, dass nun auch in den USA künftig mehr als nur ein Anbieter das iPhone vertreiben wird. Seit der iPhone-Einführung im Jahr 2007 waren iPhones in den USA offiziell nur mit dem Provider AT&T erhältlich — ab Februar dieses Jahres kommt nun auch dem seit langem in der Gerüchteküche hochgehandelte Provider «Verizon» in diesen Genuss. Doch neben dem neuen Provider gibts auch eine Neuerung beim iPhone 4 selbst, dieses gibt’s bei Verizon in einer neuen Ausführung — nämlich mit CDMA. Mit CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access — ein Codemultiplexverfahren) können, einfach ausgedrückt, verschiedene Datenströme gleichzeitig über die gleiche Frequenz benutzt werden, wodurch eine grössere Bandbreite/«Netz»-Qualität erreicht werden kann. Nikon rumor mill spins tales of manual superzooms this February and EVIL in April

Apple adding PCB suppliers to boost iPad 2 production
New tips have revealed that Apple is expanding the number of companies supplying printed circuit boards (PCBs) even ahead of the actual launch timeframe for the next iPad. Originally going with just three, Apple is thought to be adding four more that include Compeq Manufacturing, Gold Circuit Electronics, Meiko and Nan Ya PCB. Rep. Giffords' recovery includes the iPad
As reported by Reuters earlier today, the ongoing recovery and rehabilitation of wounded Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has progressed very well since the tragic and deadly assault at her event 12 days ago. Dr. Michael Lemole, the chief of neurology at Tucson's University Medical Center, noted that Giffords has demonstrated several key skills: "She is beginning to stand with assistance, she is scrolling through an iPad -- these are all fantastic advances for her. They do show higher cognitive function," he said.

Warner Music looking to sell itself off, still buy EMI
Warner Music is consulting with Goldman Sachs to at once sell itself off and looking into a buyout of its rival EMI. Sources said on Thursday night that it had reacted to multiple buyers, including professional acquirer Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, making offers by having Goldman start a formal look into the process where it would sell all or just of the company, such as its Warner/Chappell publishing wing. Apple today issued two upgrades via Software Update: a fix for iMovie '11 that resolves an issue where audio playback can fall out of sync, and updated drivers for Brother printers called "Brother 2.5 Printer Drivers for Mac OS X 10.6." Rose reverses himself, says iPad 2 won't change resolution
Digg co-founder and Revision3 head Kevin Rose earlier today posted a picture on Instagr.am (since removed) showing an incoming SMS tip that the iPad 2 will -- contrary to his own earlier claims -- have the same resolution as the current model, according to a report from 9to5Mac. The great Catan iOS game has added in its first expansion, available via an in-app purchase, and it's based on the Seafarers of Catan expansion from the original German board game. The expansion introduces ships and shipping route to the kingdom-building simulation, and includes 10 different scenarios to build ships in, as well as pirates, a Gold River tile, and some extra victory cards with different bonuses.

AMD mit Umsatzplus und dreistelligem Millionengewinn
