Not to be outdone by its Samsung successor, the Nexus One's getting a miniature over-the-air update as well, sending users on a mind-bending ride from Android 2.2.1 (version FRG83D) to the FRG83G build of Android 2.2.2. Apple hires Navy, NSA expert as global security lead
Apple has quietly hired David Rice as its Global Director of Security, multiple insiders said on Saturday. The now former Monterey Group executive director built most of his experience as a cryptology officer in the US Navy and was also a Global Network Vulnerability analyst for the NSA. AllThingsD noted that he might be best known in public for Geekonomics, a 2007 book that argued computer security vulnerabilities represented genuine threats to US infrastructure and that companies should be liable for the damage done by unpatched exploits.

Mac.com email addresses getting the boot? Signs point to 'No.'
On Friday, we got a rather nervous tip from reader Jools (echoed in this MacStories post) pointing to an Apple Discussions thread about the future of @mac.com addresses. The thread cited a conversation with an Apple support chat representative that seemed to indicate an imminent end-of-life for the vintage mac.com emails, with all incoming and outgoing mail being forced over to the equivalent me.com address.

BMW working on electric 5-series sedan for China, we still can't get a diesel
Surely it'll come elsewhere eventually, but for now an electric version of BMW's generously proportioned 5-series sedan looks destined exclusively for China. As part of the company's partnership with Brilliance China Automotive, BMW Brilliance Automotive is planning to create a pure EV 5-series and to show it off this year -- at some point. Visualized: the state of the smartphone wars
As AT&T's iPhone exclusivity reluctantly teeters on the brink of oblivion, it seems a good time to take one last look at the smartphone playground, the way it is before V-Day. The New York Times has handily done that job for us with the above chart, which simultaneously gives us a sense of scale when comparing US carriers and lays out the concentration of Android devices across those networks. Apple hacker digs up Qualcomm baseband proof by decompiling iTunes?
We're a little short-staffed on Qualcomm chipset engineers at the moment, so forgive us if we can't immediately confirm this tale, but we're hearing iPhone hacker Zibri has discovered proof of the Apple / Qualcomm collaboration in his very own build of iTunes. Zibri claims that by tearing apart the latest version, he found the chunk of code above, which contains files that are allegedly the exclusive "building blocks" of Qualcomm radio firmware. Shogun Bros. Chameleon X-1 review: the mouse that's a gamepad, too
Peanut butter and jelly. Gin and tonic. Peaches and cream. Some strange combinations make perfect sense paired, but how about the mouse and the PC gamepad? Test: Calvetica für iPhone
Alternativen zum integrierten iOS-Kalender gibt es im App Store zuhauf. Dabei gibt es solche, die der App neue Funktionen wie eine erweiterte ToDo-Verarbeitung oder eine Wochenansicht hinzufügen, und solche, die einfach nur das Aussehen ein wenig verändern. Calvetica kann ein bisschen von beidem, vermag aber vor allem, Fans von gutem App-Design zu überzeugen.

Apple overnight said it had reached 10 billion downloads on the App Store. The milestone came just over a week after the countdown began and saw Apple accumulate about 250 million downloads in just the past week. Ten billion apps downloaded!
If you think back to the first year of the iPhone, when the OS was only identified as iPhone OS and Steve Jobs claimed web apps were perfectly adequate, it's amazing that Apple just concluded their "Ten Billion App Countdown" promotion. This means a whopping 10 billion app downloads have coursed through the mighty veins of iTunes (as opposed to the Mac App Store, which could take a bit longer to reach this milestone). Angry Birds-Spezialversion kommt am Valentinstag in den App Store
Der Bestseller Angry Birds wird am 14. Februar in einer speziellen Valentinstags-Version im App Store erscheinen. Das haben die Angry Birds-Entwickler Rovio dem Fernsehsender Deutsche Welle TV verraten. Vermutlich wird die Version in der dafür gedachten App Angry Birds Seasons (0,79 Euro, iPhone App-Link; 1,59 Euro, iPad App-Link) erscheinen. AirPlay video support comes to Linux courtesy of Totem media player plug-in
This one's about as unnofficial as it gets, but Linux users do now have a relatively easy way to receive and play video streamed to their PC via Apple's AirPlay. To get things going, all you have to do is download a plug-in for the Totem media player (which ships with most popular Linux distributions), install it in the usual Linux fashion, and then start streaming video to your Linux PC with AirPlay just as if it were an Apple TV. Da haben wir hier schon einiges gesehen, aber der sogenannte Turnstyle ist das vermutlich reduzierteste Modell bisher - mal abgesehen vom wundersam schwebenden Void LP-Konzept von Rhea Jeong. Die 1394 Trade Association — welcher neben Apple auch SONY, Texas Instruments und IBM angehört — vermeldet 2 Milliarden ausgelieferte FireWire-Anschlüsse. Die Entwicklung an FireWire wurde auf Initiative von Apple hin 1986 in der «IEEE 1394 Working Group» gestartet — der serielle Anschluss heisst eigentlich offiziell «IEEE 1394» — und wurde 1995 abgeschlossen (FireWire 400). 1999 kam mit dem Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) dann der erste Mac mit serienmässig verbautem FireWire auf den Markt — bereits ab 2001 wurden dann alle Macs mit einem FireWire-Anschluss versehen. Die erste iPod-Generation liess sich zum Beispiel nur über FireWire mit Liedern bestücken und aufladen. Verizon Leak: Motorola Xoom kostet etwa 800 Dollar

In den internen Systemen von Verizon findet sich neuerdings ein "Minimum Advertised Pricing" fürs Motorola Xoom. Mit dem sogenannten MAP wird ein Mindestpreis festgelegt, zu welchem der Händler das Produkt verkaufen muss, damit sich der Hersteller an den Marketingkosten beteiligt. Apples App Store hat die Grenze von zehn Milliarden Downloads überwunden - das sind deutlich mehr als es Menschen auf der Erde gibt. iTunes decompile shows pre-existing Qualcomm chipset support
A teardown of iTunes' code has given strong hints that Apple already has support for Qualcomm cellular chipsets in its software. AMSS.mbn and partition.mbn files found in the decompile are both unique to Qualcomm's baseband hardware and reportedly a telltale sign that they're being used. Analysis: Android files likely to worsen Google's case
A dispute erupting over the legitimacy of claims that Google more directly copied Oracle code in Android may have been settled on Friday with a study. Following assertions that the files were just for testing and in some cases had already been deleted, Engadget's Nilay Patel argued that the technical issues were irrelevant and the files' very existence could make Google liable. Even if removed from the current code tree, inserted automatically or absent from current phones, the attempts to change the licenses may have violated Oracle's copyrights.

IP theft in iOS apps: Should Apple do more?
It's one thing to "borrow" a broad concept -- for example, the falling block puzzle game familiar to many as Tetris -- when creating an iOS app, and it is quite another to directly steal or copy "style" elements such as wording, graphics, titles and so forth. McSweeney's revamps iOS app, now universal with a bookstore
I've said before that I'm a huge fan of McSweeney's, the publishing group founded by author Dave Eggers. The company has had an iPhone app for a while, but it recently updated to a universal version, so now all of that great content (from daily posts to various blogs, books, and the eponymous quarterly) is available to read on the iPad any time you want.

Motorola Xoom may cost $800, HTC Thunderbolt $250
Prices unearthed in Verizon's retail system may have given away steep pricing for the Motorola Xoom. The device is listed as costing $800 unsubsidized, or about $70 more than an iPad equipped with the same 32GB of storage. Kinect meets Minecraft, animates a giant statue in your honor (video)
This isn't the first time Kinect and Minecraft have crossed paths -- scavenge the 'nets and you'll find plenty of user interface examples. What Nathan Viniconis has done, however, is different. What you're looking at above is rendered instantly by way of using what the Kinect sees and constructing an in-world monument in real time. Not only that, but the project has now evolved into a sort of stop motion animation. It's pretty impressive, even for those who have little to no idea what Minecraft is. Zynga acquires Drop7 developer Area/Code
Area/Code's Drop7 was one of the first big games on the App Store, and it was even recently featured in the iOS indie bundle sale over the holidays. Wow, insider tipsters are getting efficient! Verizon appears to have only just added Minimum Advertised Pricing for the Motorola Xoom to its internal systems, but already it's been leaked out by more than one source. Android Central has the damning evidence, which lists an $800 levy for any prospective owners of the flagship Android Honeycomb device. Toshiba tablet site jabs iPad, iPhone users' lack of Flash
A discovery on the teaser page for Toshiba's future Tegra 2 tablet has shown that Toshiba is actively chastizing iPad and iPhone users that visit the site. Anyone using iOS is told that it's "such a shame" they couldn't see the Flash page. Rather than present an alternate version, the page simply notes that Android 3.0 would have let them see the Flash presentation as it was originally planned.
