Apple has released an update to iMovie '11 that improves overall stability and fixes an issue that causes audio playback to be out of sync.

Verizon appeals FCC net neutrality rules
Verizon on Thursday said it would appeal the FCC's net neutrality rules in an attempt to force deregulation. Company deputy general counsel Michael Glover largely echoed the views of Republican FCC commissioners Baker and McDowell and hoped to spread fear and doubt surrounding the reach of the rules, which would prevent app blocking on all Internet access as well as service-specific throttling. It disagreed with the FCC's cited precedents and insisted that the rules were too broad.

HTC leaks suggest big, small, buttonless, and Brew MP-based phones are on the way

Apple seeds first Mac OS X 10.6.7 build to developers
Apple is already seeding the first beta of Mac OS X 10.6.7 to developers, reports say. Listed as build 10J842, the delta update measures 338.6MB, while the combo version is 992.9MB. Little else is known about the update so far except that several testing focus areas are listed. These include AirPort, Bonjour, SMB and the operating system's graphics drivers.

Ion's Concert Piano has a built-in iPad dock
A while back at CES, I got to check out Gear4's Pocket Loops, a little keyboard with a built-in iPod touch dock, but Ion's Concert Piano takes that idea and goes big. It's a full-sized, 88-key piano with an iPad dock built into it. Just like the Pocket Loops keyboard, there's a downloadable app that lets you play music right out of your iPad (though I couldn't find it on the App Store just yet), but unlike the Pocket Loops keyboard, the piano itself has a built-in speaker, so even without Apple's tablet, you can make some music.

Chinese green group ranks Apple last amongst multinationals
A non-profit Chinese environmental group, the Institute of Environmental and Public Affairs, is ranking Apple last in a list of 29 multinational technology companies in terms of responsiveness and transparency, according to Bloomberg. The director of the Institute, Ma Jun, says that Apple has refused to confirm whether or not some suspected polluters are amongst its suppliers. The company is also dodging responsibility for environmental problems it is causing, Ma claims.

In a surprise move, Google chief Eric Schmidt said alongside his company's financial results that he was stepping down from his position. Company co-founder Larry Page will take the top position as of April 4 while fellow founder Sergey Brin will be titled as a Co-Founder. Schmidt will stay on only as Executive Chairman.

Verizon appeals FCC's net neutrality rules
Verizon's gone to the US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC today to officially take issue with the net neutrality policy that the FCC laid out in the waning moments of 2010, saying that it's "deeply concerned by the FCC's assertion of broad authority for sweeping new regulation of broadband networks and the Internet itself." The company's extremely brief press release on the matter doesn't detail where their issues lie, specifically, but they'd said back in December that they had concerns, so the move doesn't come as a terribly big surprise. Schmidt: Google's pushes are LTE, money, cheap smartphones
Google CEO Eric Schmidt posted an editorial on Thursday that outlined a strong emphasis on smartphones for 2011. The company's drive would be "all about mobile" this year and would start with a focus on LTE-based 4G. He explained in the Harvard Business Review that the roughly 8-10Mbps real-world speeds would be key to "new and creative" apps in entertainment and social networking that Google wanted to spur along as quickly as possible.

Eric Schmidt stepping down as Google CEO
Looks like Steve's (former?) BFF Eric Schmidt is stepping down as CEO of Google, leaving co-founder Larry Page in charge of the company as the new CEO. A rather astounding re-arranging of the deck chairs, but also the logical progression of affairs. Larry and Sergey Brin (who either drew the long or short straw here) are the brains behind Google's mighty algorithm and there's little doubt they are smart guys who know how to get things done. Brin will be "has decided to devote his time and energy to strategic projects," including "new products." Neat!

iLife Update: iMovie in Version 9.0.2 veröffentlicht

Google's Q4 financial results press release contains a bombshell: as of April 4, co-founder Larry Page (on the far right, above) will replace Eric Schmidt as CEO. Apple is now the largest mobile phone manufacturer by revenue
Based on revenue, Apple is now the largest mobile phone provider in the world, surpassing even global leader Nokia. In the winter quarter of 2010, the iPhone and its accessories generated revenue of $10.47 billion for Apple. Nokia's Devices & Services group projects Q4 2010 sales of $11.7 billion, but this figure includes mobile computers, tablets and revenue from Ovi-branded services. Ovi offers email, music, navigation and an app store for Nokia handsets. When you add in just Apple's iTunes revenue of $1.4 billion, Apple jumps ahead of its biggest mobile phone rival.

Ex-SEC head claims Apple saying enough about Jobs' health
Apple has said all it needs to about the health of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, claims a former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Arthur Levitt. Jobs took a third medical leave on Monday, but apart from the executive's continued strategic involvement and Tim Cook's day-to-day control, the company has mentioned virtually nothing else. Unlike the prior leave, it is not known how long Jobs will be absent, and no hint to his medical condition has been offered.

Chinese groups slams Apple for environmental policies
Ouch. The Associated Press is reporting that three dozen environmental groups have jointly issued a report called "The Other Side of Apple" that accuses the company of ignoring their concerns about health and safety issues at Chinese manufacturing facilities. These plants that the company with components that are used to build iPads, iPhones and other apple products. iFixit releases iPhone 4 liberation kit for Pentalobe screws
The good folks at iFixit have noticed that iPhone 4s taken in for service often return without their original Phillips 00 screws. Instead, they're being replaced with Apple's own proprietary Pentalobular screws. These are the same screws that are in the current-generation MacBook Air.
Don't call them Torx screws because they most certainly are not. To get the rare, expensive tool that's meant to extract them, you'll have to be a certified Apple tech (or know one).
While you're meant to use a special driver to extract those screws, you can get them out with something else. That something else is a part of iFixit's "

FAA warns of ongoing GPS issues in southeastern US due to Defense Department 'tests'
Don't panic, but anyone planning on using GPS in the southeastern US for the next month or so will likely want to make sure they have a fallback option. That's according to a flight advisory just issued by the FAA, which warns pilots that their GPS signal "may be unreliable or unavailable" due to "GPS tests" that the Department of Defense will be conducting between January 20th and February 22nd. Details are fairly light beyond that, but the FAA does note that when the "tests" occur they will be active for 45 minutes, and be followed by 15 minutes of off time -- additional notices to pilots will apparently be issued at least 24 hours prior to any test. Firemint sells three million copies of Flight Control
Firemint has shared some sales figures about Flight Control over on its blog. The now classic line-drawing game was recently listed in the top paid apps of all time on the App Store, and so Firemint decided to reveal a little bit about how many copies it's sold and when. The grand total is exactly 3,881,634 copies as of their posting. The game currently sells for 99 cents, but that doesn't mean Firemint pulled in $3.8 million as Apple takes their 30% share as well.

Eric Schmidt lays out three priorities for Google: LTE, mobile money, inexpensive smartphones
He didn't exactly go on at length about them, but Google CEO Eric Schmidt has laid out three clear priorities for the company in a brief guest article for the Harvard Business Review -- and, not surprisingly, they're "all about mobile." Those include focusing on "developing the underlying fast networks," or what Schmidt notes is "generally called LTE," pushing the development of NFC-based "mobile money" and, last but not least, increasing the availability of inexpensive smartphones in the poorest parts of the world. Belgians, Dutch: Apple's iTunes-only subs anti-competitive
Apple's recent decision to ban print subscription tie-ins on iPads may trigger a European investigation into possible accusations of being anti-competitive. Belgium's economy minister Vincent van Quickborne said this week that he would have the low country's Competition Authority investigate whether Apple was overstepping its bounds by requiring that any subscription plans go through iTunes. Moves in both Belgium and the Netherlands could violate antitrust law by preventing publishers from using their own subscription methods, van Quickborne said.

Sorry, gents, but your conspiracy theories are wholly kaput -- not only is a Samsung Galaxy S getting Android 2.2 stateside, but the speedy software update will start rolling out tomorrow on T-Mobile USA. Apple patent suggests Magic Mouse with display panel
A newly revealed Apple patent has an interesting take on the Magic Mouse: the patent shows a display embedded in its touch surface, creating sort of a mini iPod touch-style interface. It's not clear just how much processing power the display-enabled mouse itself would have, but uses mentioned in the patent seem to involve the display working in conjunction with actual Mac apps, like showing a calculator when using the Numbers app on your Mac, or a magnification of text when using Pages.

Opera browser headed to Sony TVs and Blu-ray players
Opera has officially announced its much-loved web browser will be appearing on Sony TVs and Blu-ray players. China approves unknown Apple 3G device
China's State Radio Regulatory Center has approved an unknown Apple device supporting 3G, according to Dow Jones. Certification for an Apple "data terminal" was in fact granted on December 29th. The device in question is said to rely on WCDMA for 3G broadband, while supporting other wireless standards including GSM, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Fantastic transparent iPhone 4 case mod
We love a good mod, and this one is stellar. An enterprising iPhone user got his hands on a clear case mod kit for the iPhone 4, (Google translation) put it together and posted the fantastic results online. It's wicked geeky, and reminds us of the clear Newton MessagePad prototype, though not as cloudy.

iPhone receives push notifications from real-world mailbox
Sure, push notification is nothing new for iPhone users. But when was the last time that you received notification that real-live mail -- the kind made of atoms, not bits -- has shown up in your mailbox?
One of the new evil geniuses at Make Magazine online, Matt Richardson, decided he'd like to get notification when the flesh-and-blood mailman delivers something to his mailbox. Using a standard USPS-approved mailbox, he installed a snap-action switch that signals when the mailbox door has been opened. T-Mobile says 'ask Apple' on iPhone, hints it's more likely
T-Mobile during its morning media event today in New York City made further indirect allusions to possible iPhone plans. Carrier officials when asked about the option in the post-exclusive US environment didn't confirm or deny plans but instead told the media to "ask Apple." The need to adapt to T-Mobile's 1,700MHz 3G band was cited as one obstacle, although T-Mobile made allusions to 3G chipsets having "evolved" to support many more cellular frequencies and thus covering both AT&T and T-Mobile users.

Future Apple mouse could include multi-touch display
A newly published Apple patent application hints at the possibility of a mouse with a multi-touch display, notes Patently Apple. Titled Computer Input Device Including a Display Device, it depicts a mouse with the display mounted on top. Don't believe the icons: iPod 2 unlikely on February 9
9to5 Mac and others have suggested that the Calendar app icon in the iOS 4.3 beta hints at a release date for iPad 2. Unfortunately, it's not likely.
A Springboard preview image in the latest iOS 4.3 beta shows the Calendar app with a big number 9 front-and-center. Remembering that the original iPad showed a 27, and that it was released on the 27th, some wondered if that 9 was a bit of foreshadowing.

Apple switches to tamper-resistant screws
Apple is switching to a new kind of screw across its product lines, claims iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens. The company is specifically said to be migrating to a special "Pentalobe" screw, for instance replacing the Phillips screws used in earlier shipments of the iPhone 4. This creates a serious problem, Wiens suggests, as the screwdrivers needed to remove Pentalobes are not easy to buy, effectively blocking people from doing their own repairs or having a third-party company handle it.

iPad multi-touch gestures will be withheld from iOS 4.3
There's bad news for those anticipating multi-touch gestures in iOS 4.3. It seems that the feature won't be a part of the public release. Engadget and others have confirmed that the feature is just a developer preview, so no ninja-level pinching and swiping for us normals.

Apple late Wednesday sued Nokia again in an attempt to negate recent countering lawsuits. The new London-based complaint hoped to invalidate one of the touchscreen scrolling patents Nokia used to sue Apple in Germany in September. The two companies currently have a total of 37 patents in dispute.

Sony Ericsson loses market share in fall without new phones
Sony Ericsson said that it will have lost market share in the fall due to a poor lineup. Although it shipped 11.2 million phones in the last months of 2010, more than the 10.4 million from the summer, it determined that its share will have dropped to just three percent as the market grew faster. iDOS 2: The return of the emulator
Back in October of 2010, we told you about iDOS, a 99¢ software emulation of good old DOS. The universal app was able to even run an ancient version of Microsoft Windows (3.0), and came with a handful of "freeware / abandonware" applications like Ms. PacMan PC and DigDug. Unfortunately, the app was yanked from the App Store very quickly.
It's back in the App Store again, this time for free and with a vastly simplified setup. iDOS now comes with Wolfenstein 3D, the original Duke Nukem I and II, Major Striker, SuperNova, and Kingdom of Kroz II. Apple revives Reading store, plans new Portland space
Apple is once again hiring for a future retail outlet in Reading, England, a report says. Job listings were originally posted nearly four years ago, but then vanished. In particular Apple is now hiring for a store at The Oracle, a shopping center by Kennet River which opened in 1999. The outlet could be one of as little as two stores opening in the UK in 2011, the other being situated in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Average Apple salary is only $46k
John Cassidy of The New Yorker took a deep dive into the balance sheets of both Apple and Goldman Sachs to see which company offers the best return on the capital it employs. Using the latest earnings reports from the two American companies, Cassidy calculates that the two firms share similar profit margins but vastly different economic returns. Cassidy looked at each company's return on assets (ROA) and calculated that Apple is twenty times more profitable than Goldman Sachs.

Is slightly extending Ping hooks with iOS 4.3, code from the latter's second beta shows. IFPI sees digital music slowdown, still blames piracy
The IFPI tried to raise alarm on Thursday with a warning in its latest annual report that digital music sales were slowing down. Sales through iTunes and other outlets climbed by just six percent worldwide and made up 29 percent of their revenues. The slowdown came both from a maturing of the digital music market but was also blamed on piracy.

EU's Galileo sat-nav system's budget overruns continue, European Commission asks for an extra €1.9 billion
The European Commission has just completed its mid-term review of the EU's Galileo satellite navigation system and -- surprise, surprise -- they found that they need an additional €1.9 billion ($2.56 billion) to finish the system. Asahi intros strong glass for devices, won't name customers
Asahi Glass unveiled a new form of ultra-strong glass meant to take on Corning's Gorilla Glass for use in mobile devices. Dragontrail has the same near-scratchproof surface as its American rival, will survive most common drops and can take 16kg (35lbs) of concerted pressure that could bend the display without breaking. The survivability lets hardware manufacturers use thinner glass as well and can result in both slimmer and thinner devices.

Der DOS-Emulator iDOS*, der Programme des alten Windows-Betriebssystem aufs iPhone bringt, hat es zurück in den App Store geschafft. Oh look, even more evidence that the next generation iPad will be equipped with cameras. The image above showing the three new iPad apps was discovered in the iOS 4.3 beta 2 by MacRumors. DOS emulation app for iOS returns: plus games, minus files
Two months ago, a DOS emulator for iOS devices called iDOS from FastIntelligence appeared in the App Store that allowed users to run old PC DOS applications -- including Windows 3.1 itself -- under emulation. The free app was pulled after only a day, most likely for being in violation of App Store policies that forbid running external code. DOS applications were loaded via iTunes File Sharing, and commands were entered via a prompt and the virtual keyboard within the app.

As one reader just notified us (and verified by a number of staffers), Google Voice now lets you port your own phone number into its system -- as in, that 10-digit hometown relic you've been holding onto as long as you've carried a handset can now live in the cloud and grant you freedom to start afresh / forward to your many on-hand devices. Looks like the iPad might not have an exclusive on those new "multitasking" gestures unearthed in the latest iOS 4.3 beta, because BGR's got some shots up of an purported internal build that seem to indicate Cupertino intends to push them down to the iPhone line as well. Now, there are a couple of obvious red flags here -- using "four or five fingers" sounds pretty unreasonable for a 3.5-inch display, though it'd certainly tie in with recent rumors that Apple's turning sour on the physical Home button and might indicate that the

WSJ: Nokia X7 canceled for AT&T, but at Espoo's behest
Our subsidized Symbian superphone dreams remain squashed, but it looks like we might have a different party to blame -- the Wall Street Journal's anonymous sources say it was Nokia itself who decided to pull plans to launch the X7 exclusively on AT&T. Guardian iPhone app debuts, subscription available to UK customers
The Guardian has released a brand new version of its iPhone app on the App Store, this time featuring a subscription model for UK customers. Lots of publications have been trying to get Apple to approve a subscription model for apps but The Guardian went ahead and did it themselves, offering up a six-month subscription to the content for £3, or a full year subscription for £4. The full app will still have content even without the subscription, but the subscription offers features like offline browsing and search, as well as some extra audio and video content.

Seagate profit plummets amid weak demand for consumer PCs
Seagate has reported a significant drop in profits, which slid by 72 percent in the recent quarter. The lackluster performance was blamed on weaker-than-expected demand in the consumer computer segment. Verizon iPad+MyFi: Best Buy SKU mystery solved?
Unconfirmed reports may indicate that the mystery "placeholder" SKU and prices that showed up on Best Buy's inventory system earlier this week may ultimately be a bundle of Apple's iPad with Verizon's MiFi personal hotspot device. Under such an arrangement, Best Buy -- who already has relationships with both companies -- would offer Wi-Fi only iPads along with Verizon's cellular-to-802.11 converter, encouraging buyers to sign up for one of Verizon's data plans.

RBC ups its target price for AAPL to $425
It could be partly because of Apple's 71% year over year revenue growth reported in yesterday's first fiscal quarter 2011 earnings report or it could be the result of the 17 million iPads shipped in 2010. But either way, Boy Genius Report just let us know that RBC Capital Markets has revised their Apple stock estimated upwards from $395 just last week to $425 today following the earnings report, as they are expecting Apple's revenue for 2011 to come in at just a shade under $100 billion and 2012 to come in at $108 billion.

Samsung snaps up Liquavista for outdoor-ready displays
Samsung on Wednesday night confirmed that it had bought out Liquavista in what's likely a play for smartphones and tablets. The buyout gives it access to electrowetting, a technique that can give e-paper performance closer to that of an LCD. It can refresh 70 times faster than traditional e-paper and play color video but still has twice the light transmittance of an LCD and uses just a tenth of the power.

Music for Shuffle features music designed for the iPod shuffle
This is fascinating to me -- musician Matthew Irvine Brown has compiled a set of 18 musical tracks, about an hour of music total, designed to be played in random order on the iPod shuffle. There was a lot of care and thought put into this as he designed the music to be atmospheric pieces. Even when shuffled they'll work together no matter which order they're played. He also designed the sound of the music to fit with the iPod shuffle, hiding the glitch heard as the iPod switches tracks. As a final bonus, Matthew designed separate cover art for each track, so as a tune plays in iTunes the cover art shows a very rough "animation."

Northwestern University's curvilinear 'eyeball camera' is squishy, just like yours
We've seen gooey lenses before, the Varioptic variety already having found a home in an honest to gosh retail product. But, this is a little different. AOL Editions coming to take on Flipboard
AOL has taken its first concerted step into iPad apps with the tease of AOL Editions. The title takes a cue from Flipboard but, as teased in a video (below), may be more reactive. Instead of the user creating custom feeds, it would work based on interests and collate the content into a very stylized, magazine-like format with a clearer theme, such as music.

Lunchtime Clock mod offers false promises to beleaguered office workers
We've seen a lot of DIY clock mods in the past, but the Lunchtime Clock has to be the most useless. It's great in theory: the thing speeds up 20 percent starting at 11AM and slows down twenty percent at 11:48AM. So, at 11:48AM the clock reads noon, and by 1:00PM it's back in sync, giving you an extra 12 minutes to digest that chili dog you so hastily sucked down before returning to work. Intego: actual Mac threats still rare, "trickware" rising

IBM forms new partnership with ARM in hopes of developing ludicrously small mobile processors
We've seen IBM and ARM team up before, but this week both companies announced a new joint initiative to develop chips measuring 14nm. That's significantly smaller than the ridiculously tiny 20nm SoCs ARM hopes to create in partnership with TSMC, and makes the company's previous work with IBM on 32nm semiconductors look like a cake walk. The potential benefits, though, are faster processors that require less power, which both firm's hope will pave the way for a new generation of devices. iOS devices filling up? Try deleting some apps
This morning, my Apps runneth-ed over. This afternoon, after a brutal once-over, not so much. I just deleted over a hundred applications from my iTunes library, and storage-wise, my iOS devices are breathing a little easier for it. To delete an app in iTunes, you can select one in Apps, press the Delete key and click Remove when a dialog appears asking if you are sure you want to remove the app from your iTunes library (you can also right-click an app and choose Delete). Then you should get a dialog asking if you'd like to keep the file or move it to the trash. I keep these files so they no longer appear in iTunes because apps tend to be tiny and I've got plenty of storage. You can always trash them, howeve
