LG G-Slate to have an 8.9-inch 3D display? Rumor mill says 'maybe'
If 3D and tablets are the two unstoppable forces of modern consumer electronics, doesn't it make sense to meld them into one, fearsome, trendsetting device? LG's T-Mobile-bound G-Slate might be doing exactly that, we're hearing, as a pair of different sites are reporting it'll come with a 3D-capable display. The most interesting things from Apple's Q1 earnings call
Perhaps, like me, you find most financial news and statistics boring. Perhaps, like me, when the AAPL liveblog came up yesterday, you decided it was probably time to go get some lunch instead. Fortunately, we have access to Business Insider, where they've compiled a quick and easy list of truly interesting items from the call yesterday, in plain English, with nary a mention of terms like "general allocation accounting" or "high-interest stock targets" (yawn).
The long and short of it: There was no mention of Steve Jobs' illness, but Tim Cook and Peter Oppenheimer impressed, as did the company's standing in general (not surprising -- that's been the case for

AT&T tweaking messaging plans, killing some upgrade discounts, raising fees and MicroCell pricing
How on Earth have Verizon and AT&T both decided to kill off their upgrade discount programs within a few days of each other? Hard to say, but we've gotten a little peek at some new policies designed to "streamline" things that are apparently coming into effect next Sunday, January 23rd -- and very few (if any) of them are going to bring a smile to your face. Here's the gist:
There'll be a new text package of 1,000 messages for $10 with overage at 10 cents apiece. This compares to 5 cents at the 1,500 / $15 level and 10 cents at the 200 / $5 level.

iOS 4.3 beta 2 released, iPad multitasking gestures just a developer preview
Apple just dropped iOS 4.3 beta 2 on world, and with it a big sad bomb: those nifty iPad multitasking gestures we discovered in beta 1 won't be enabled when 4.3 ships to customers. Instead, Cupertino says it's "providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps," Oh well, we suppose -- there's always 4.4, or even iOS 5, we suppose. Apple posts Top-Selling, Top Free app lists during contest
As Apple approaches its 10 billionth App Store download, the company has posted a page of top-selling paid and free apps to coincide with its 10-billionth-app contest. Apple will give away a $10,000 iTunes gift card to the person who downloads the 10 billionth app, with up to 25 app downloads counted for each user per day.

Nokia X7 for AT&T axed because of lack of carrier attention
Nokia's decision to cancel the X7's US launch came from a lack of faith from AT&T, insiders said on Wednesday. The Symbian^3 gaming phone would have been introduced for AT&T just ahead of Mobile World Congress in mid-February but was voluntarily dropped as it wasn't going to get "enough marketing and subsidies support" from the American carrier. The WSJ's informants said the X7 would still ship, but only to other countries.

Apple seeds iOS 4.3 beta 2 to developers
Apple has posted a second beta of iOS 4.3 for developers by way of the iOS Dev Center. Any new features and code references are so far undiscovered, but the release is accompanied by matching versions of Xcode and the Apple TV firmware. Still missing is support for running v4.3 on the iPhone 3G or second-gen iPod touch, suggesting that Apple is indeed leaving v4.2.1 as the last iOS update for the devices.

AT&T rumored to rework texting plan to counter Verizon iPhone
AT&T may enjoy inviting Verizon iPhone owners to life in the slow lane, but the latest rumor out of GearLive suggests AT&T may be modifying some of its pricing plans to entice customers to stick with the GSM iPhone. The leaked Best Buy screen grab suggests AT&T will be dropping its current messaging plans and replacing them with two plans that fit in with its K.I.S.S. (Keep it simple silly) philosophy.
The lower priced plan will provide customers with 1000 text messages for $10 per month, while the upper tier plan will offer unlimited messaging for $20 per month ($30 on a family plan). The soon-to-be defunct plan

Apple support company drops lawsuit against Greek customer
One of Apple's official support companies, Systemgraph, has dropped a lawsuit it filed against a Greek customer, reports say. Dimitris Papadimitriadis brought an iMac to the company to fix dark areas in the display, only to get worse results in return. The legal action came as a result of a public complaint in a web forum, which Systemgraph subsequently insisted was "an organised attempt to slander and insult" the firm.

Acer backtracks, says tablets not part of a netbook phaseout
Acer quickly stepped in with a response to a Taiwan sales manager's claims that Acer's tablet line was part of a strategy to phase out netbooks. The company claimed that its new slates were an expansion as the industry shifted. Both netbooks and tablets would exist side-by-side, it said.

Apple has released the second beta version of iOS 4.3 to its paid developers. Samsung rolls out five new ST series point-and-shoot cameras
Samsung just introduced a slew of new cameras at CES earlier this month, but it's now already back with another batch, which consists of five low to mid-range point-and-shoots in its ST series. Those begin with the $100 ST30 model, and move on up to the ST65, ST90 and touchscreen-equipped ST95, before topping out with the $230 ST6500 (pictured above), which packs a 16 megapixel sensor, a 5x optical zoom, 720p video recording, and the same touchscreen interface as the ST95. Journalists reveal Jerry York as source of Apple leaks
A number of journalists have revealed that former Apple board member Jerry York leaked secret information regarding Apple and Steve Jobs. Fortune's Doron Levin recently revealed off-the-record information about Jobs' trip to Switzerland to seek cancer treatment, a move that York mentioned but wanted to keep from the public.

Dear Aunt TUAW,
I've been hearing rumors that the next generation iPad might include a proximity sensor. Now call me dim, but I just don't get it. Proximity sensor? What the fudge? Are we supposed to be holding our iPads to our ears while we chat over Skype VoIP? Has Apple never heard of the (please imagine airquotes here) Bluetooth headset?

App review: SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Phone 7
As you might have heard a little while back, Windows Phone 7 is the latest smartphone OS to have joined the SlingPlayer gang, meaning WP7 fanatics like Ballmer can be couch potatoes wherever they are. Nikon rumored for mirrorless in April, P500 in February
Two leaks in the past day may have given clues as to Nikon's camera strategy year, including the first more tangible details of its mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. One hint puts the mirrorless camera's launch in April and explains Nikon's public aims to be different as a shift to the pro market. Moving to a more advanced model would both help separate camera from Nikon's entry-level DSLRs and entice those on existing mirrorless systems to upgrade, Mirrorless Rumors heard.

iOS 4.3 code hints at automatic lock function on iPad 2
The next-generation iPad could include a means of automatically locking or unlocking the system based on the presence of a case lid, the iOS 4.3 beta reportedly indicates. Buried in code for the Settings app are noted to be two unusual strings, "PAD_CASE_LOCK" and "PAD_CASE_LOCK_FOOTER." The value description for the former simply says "iPad Cover Lock / Unlock," while the latter's reads "Automatically lock and unlock your iPad when you close and open the iPad cover."

Boxee Box's Vudu update goes live along with fixes
Slightly later than planned, Boxee on Wednesday rolled out Vudu access on the Boxee Box. The firmware upgrade gives the media hub its first access to top-tier, commercial movies in the US, with many purchases and rentals coming the same day as they do on DVD. The Boxee's Atom chip is fast enough to decode Vudu's signature HDX format at its full 1080p and 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Plus surround.

iPad tops 17 million tablets shipped in 2010
The tablet market exploded in 2010 with vendors shipping over 17 million tablets in 2010, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC),Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker. The Apple iPad led the way with 87.4% market share. The remaining 12.6% is comprised of Android and other tablets. Among the Android devices, the Samsung Galaxy Tab takes top position with over one million Galaxy Tab units shipped in 2010.

Vudu arrives on the Boxee Box, along with a host of big fixes
Ah, there we go. After a bit of a false start, Boxee's rolling out Vudu to the Boxee Box today -- you can either hold tight for the auto update in the next 24 hours, or trigger the manual update in Settings. Vudu's offering new users who sign up on the Boxee Box a $5.99 credit, which is just one cent short of three $2-for-2-nights Vudu HDX rentals, so that's very clever. Vudu remains Vudu -- 1080p/24 video, 5.1 audio -- but we'll obviously give it a look on the Box to check it out. Photo Factory for iOS devices is powerful (and, for today, free)
I love passing on tips about free stuff. Today I'll give you a quick alert on Photo Factory. The app is free today only, and it has a lot of good features for the photo hobbyist.
There's a large collection of preset filters you can modify to taste and see the results instantly. You also get the ability to create a variety of frames. Effects are additive, so you could create a frame, vary the color and add a soft matte with color control of the frame and the matte effect.
I was most impressed with some of the black and white filters. For example, Photo Factory can find the sky in the photo and turn it into black and white, even if some parts of the image extend into the sky. Normally this would take some time consuming masking, but Photo Facto

Acer: netbooks will not be phased out, Sandy Bridge tablets not coming any time soon

Amateurs trump pros in predicting Apple's fantastic financial quarter
Now that Apple's 1st quarter financial performance has been revealed, it's time to revisit predictions made by amateurs and pros alike. Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt did just that, and found that the novices out-guessed several high-priced heavyweights.
Fortune has a system to rank the best and worst Apple analysts, measuring how accurately their predictions were across seven categories:

RIM exec talks PlayBook, App World, QNX on phones, and more

Best Buy to downplay Verizon iPhone while it's not in store?
Best Buy may try to push customers away from the Verizon iPhone as long as it's not on sale at the big-box chain, new memos may have uncovered today. Lifting some of its content from BGR, the store is reportedly telling floor workers asked to focus on the AT&T model instead. The GearFuse tip asserted that the iPhone 4 will "putter at EVDO speeds" and is at odds with a Verizon CES drive that saw it focus on 4G phones.

Is that count down or count up? In either case, visit 10billionapps.com for an unofficial countdown to the likely moment that the 10 billionth app will be downloaded from Apple's App Store. AMD announces Fusion-based Embedded G-Series platform
We've just seen what AMD's Fusion platform can do for a laptop, and it looks like we'll soon also be seeing it in a lot more devices -- AMD has just announced its new Fusion-based Embedded G-Series platform, which can be used for things like set-top boxes, in-car computers, small form factor PCs, and more. Microsoft's eighth store opening in Costa Mesa near Apple
Microsoft used Twitter to announce it will open up an eighth store in California this Spring. The location is set for the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, which also houses an Apple retail store and thus follows Microsoft's practice of shadowing Apple retail. AT&T reshuffling messaging in counter to Verizon iPhone
The first evidence of AT&T reworking its plans, possibly to give a better standing against the Verizon iPhone, has been made public through what's potentially a scoop from Best Buy. The carrier would drop its $5/200 and $15/1,500 messaging plans in favor of a new, $10/1,000 messaging plan. Two men charged in case of iPad data theft
As anticipated, two suspects have been charged in the matter of iPad customer data stolen from AT&T, according to a spokesperson for Paul Fishman, the US attorney for New Jersey. HP Opal, Topaz to have iPad resolution, OS cloud sync
More details have popped up for HP's Opal and Topaz tablets that in a leak that shows at least some parallels to the iPad. Both devices will be the only known mainstream tablets outside of the iPad to have 1024x768 screens. Engadget's contacts added that the 9-inch Opal's dimensions will be so close to those of the iPad that it will be just 0.04 inches smaller on average than its Apple counterpart.

TiVo app available on App Store
Roughly two months after announcing that a TiVo app was in development, TiVo Premiere for iPad was released on Tuesday. Users can browse program guides, schedule recordings, remotely control their TiVo and more. It joins a slew of other apps compatible with TV services such as DISH and DIRECTV.

Wheego's so-called Whip LiFe delayed, supposedly still coming soon
We'd thought the thing were on their way, scoring EPA certification back in December and, in theory, almost ready to roll. Turns out Department of Transportation approval is taking a little longer than anticipated, and so the $32,995, 65mph, 100 mile range cars still aren't fully road legal. Playboy Magazine to hit the iPad uncensored in March
We were surprised to learn that an uncensored version of Playboy Magazine will hit the iPad in March, including a complete back catalog. Hef shared the news on Twitter, saying, "Big news! Starbucks has expanded its limited trial run of letting users pay for their in-store purchases using an app on their smartphone. Stock targets rise in wake of strong Apple Q1 results
Some analysts are boosting estimates in the aftermath of extremely strong Apple Q1 results. UBS' Maynard Um has raised his stock target from $415 to $465, citing better performance than expected in virtually every area, including revenue, EPS and gross margin, as well as shipments of Macs, iPhones and iPads. App review: AirView
We just came across a neat little iOS app called AirView which, as you can probably tell from the name, transforms your iOS devices into AirPlay video receivers. And since iOS can also output video via AirPlay, this means you can use AirView to either grab AirPlay streams from your computer's iTunes, or you can stream videos from one iOS device to another (provided that they are both running iOS 4.2 and above, of course). Theoretically, little work is required to get the ball rolling -- just launch the app, then play your desired video clip from the source, and finally pick your client device using the AirPlay button.

Nintendo at its special event in New York City commited to the US launch details of the 3DS. The glasses-free 3D game console should ship on March 27 and will cost $250, roughly in line with expectations. Ever try to do multiplayer on a DS game? We're really sorry to hear that. It's a mess of lengthy friend codes that does more to discourage online play than enable it. That's going away with the 3DS. At Nintendo's 3DS press event in New York they announced a new system where there's only a single code, assigned per-console and registered only once. You'll have a single group of friends and, when they pop online in a new game, you'll see them there. No need for multiple multiple lists and less of a need for Tylenol, too.

Leak backs PSP2 showing January 27 to take on Apple
Swirling rumors of a PSP2 unveil on January 27 were supported on Tuesday with a corroborating story. Sony's console should be revealed that day and will be quickly followed by the Xperia Play in February, likely at Mobile World Congress. I seem to have started off the week with some quality experimental gaming on the iPhone, so let's continue that trend with this great title called Today I Die Again from indie developer Daniel Benmergui. I met Daniel at IndieCade 2009 in Culver City, CA, and this is one of a few "games" he's brought to life. I put quotes around "games" because they're more like interactive stories. Google-Chef Eric Schmidt versucht seit über einem Jahr, mit dem Begriff "open" sein Smartphone-Betriebssystem Android gegen das iPhone in Stellung zu bringen. Project Buran was the USSR's answer to NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia. Unlike its highly decorated American counterpart, however, this child of the 1970s produced only one unmanned space flight during its operation and was ignominiously shut down by Russian authorities in 1993. The remains of this most ambitious (and expensive) effort are still around, however, and have now taken on a layer of rust, weeds and general decay that would make any post-apocalyptic set designer swoon with admiration. HTC ThunderBolt will support simultaneous voice and data in LTE areas
At CES, Verizon had mentioned that "some but not all" of its first LTE handsets would support the simultaneous use of voice and data. Bloomberg: Sony PSP2 to debut next week, PlayStation Phone at MWC

Linksys E4200 packs 450Mbps, high speed at long range
Cisco undertook a major rethink of its Linksys home Wi-Fi routers on Wednesday through the E4200. The design is a major restyling with a more upscale, conservative look but also focuses much more on performance. T-Mobile Netherlands offers unlock after one year
Beginning February 1st, T-Mobile customers in the Netherlands can get their iPhones officially unlocked after as little as one year on contract --- considerably quicker than any other country that offers the service. The company said they were making the service available at no cost because they were no longer the exclusive provider, so SIM locks were no longer necessary.

Samsung Vibrant 4G for T-Mobile gets FCC clearance?
A new Sammy christened SGH-T959V just passed through the FCC, and we've got a good feeling this is the Vibrant 4G that we know is on its way to Big Magenta before too long. Why's that? Well, most notably, SGH-T959 is the model number for the original Vibrant -- and like the Vibrant, this device has support for AWS, which any T-Mobile 3G / 4G device would need. Furthermore, take one look at that outline up there -- certainly looks like a Galaxy S of some sort, doesn't it? More on this soon, we suspect.

Buying a Samsung Galaxy S sounded like a fantastic decision when Android 2.1 was hot stuff, but now that Gingerbread's out of the oven, Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant and Epic 4G owners are starting to get a little tired of getting stuck behind the curve. Microsoft releases OneNote app for iPhone, free for a 'limited time'
Well, here's something of a surprise -- Microsoft has just brought its OneNote app to the iPhone, and it's made it available as a free download "for a limited time" to boot. As with the Windows Phone 7 app (previously the only mobile version), the iPhone app will let you manage notes and shopping lists (and even add pictures taken with the iPhone's camera), and then sync those with Windows Live SkyDrive so you can access them in either the Windows desktop application or its web-based counterpart. iPads and Retina Displays: Doing the math
Over the weekend, we saw the swirling rumors around the specs for the (presumably inevitable) iPad 2 start to come together. One of the most intriguing suggestions, which Engadget claim to have a reliable source for (and MacRumors some corroborating evidence to boot) is a higher resolution screen to match the iPhone 4's Retina Display -- specifically, doubling in both directions, changing from 1024x768 to 2048x1536.

Galaxy S Android 2.2 stalled by Samsung asking upgrade toll
Samsung's withholding of Android 2.2 upgrades in the US may be due to an attempt to extract what amounts to an "upgrade toll" on carriers, a purported insider leaked this weekend. Unlike HTC and Motorola, Samsung considers new Android revisions major and demands that carriers pay a fee per device to get a feature upgrade. US carriers have reportedly disagreed and effectively triggered a stand-off, refusing to pay for an OS update that costs Samsung almost nothing and which others deliver for free.

Apple's invested in a 'very strategic' $3.9b component supply agreement, but what is it?
Here's an interesting little note from Apple's record-breaking Q1 2011 financial sales call: according to CFO Peter Oppenheimer and acting CEO / COO Tim Cook, the company's made a two-year, $3.9 billion deal with three suppliers to secure a "very strategic" component for its products. Feds charge two in June 2010 iPad 3G hacking
Two men have been charged with stealing the email addresses and personal data of over 120,000 iPad users last year. A 26-year-old from San Francisco and a 25-year-old from Fayetteville, Arkansas were charged with hacking into AT&T's servers and stealing the data, scraped from AT&T's website.
Both were charged with one count of identity fraud and one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization, and were caught in part due to IRC chat logs in which the hackers bragged about the theft, and talked about trying to spin it as a statement against

Jobs debunked OS X Server rumors last month
Yesterday, rumors began floating around the Mac community, initially published by HardMac, that Apple was in the process of deciding whether to phase out all of its "enterprise" offerings, eliminating the XSan and Final Cut Server products as it had done the XServe hardware (which will be discontinued as of this month). The report went on to speculate that OS X Server itself may be cut. By coincidence, a customer had asked Jobs in an e-mail in December if OS X Server was on the chopping block, and received a single-word answer: "No."

Microsoft releases OneNote app for iOS
Microsoft has released a OneNote app for iOS, designed to sync with the company's OneNote software, which is a part of Microsoft Office for Windows and has a web version that Mac users can take advantage of.
The OneNote app allows you to create notes and sync them with the Windows Live SkyDrive cloud storage. The app will allow use of the iPhone's camera to add pictures to your notes, but doesn't have all the features of its web-based sibling or the Windows desktop version. As Macworld points out, some of those advanced features will not sync to the iPhone app.

Jobs to remain on Disney board amid medical leave
Steve Jobs will reportedly remain a member of Walt Disney's board of directors, despite taking a medical leave from his typical duties at Apple, sources have told Dow Jones.
