Silver Tesla Model S Alpha hits the road, carves some corners (video)
We've seen it inside and out. We've seen it naked. Now we're seeing it do its thing. Tesla has just released a tasty video of the Alpha version of the Model S carving some corners, and while this isn't the first time we've seen the car in motion this is the best taste of the Alpha we've yet been given. Check out the video after the break and, no, your speakers aren't broken, it is that quiet. Oh, and if you'd like to know more about what's going on under all

T-Mobile Netherlands starts offering free iPhone unlocks
We know exactly what Canada's Rogers is thinking right now: "c'mon, T-Mobile, you guys are leaving money on the table!" Though Rogers and its Fido subsidiary are charging CAD $50 to unlock an iPhone, T-Mobile's Dutch division is now willing to do it gratis, citing the fact that multiple Dutch carriers now offer the iPhone and they no longer feel the need to keep it SIM-locked. Refreshing attitude, isn't it? As of January 12th, newly-activated iPhones on T-Mobile Netherlands are unlocked automatically; existing customers can call into customer service to get an unlock now, or wait until February for a do-it-yourself method. Of course,

Apple on iPad competition: Windows is 'big and heavy,' Android is 'just a scaled-up smartphone'
Apple's COO (and current Steve Jobs stand-in) Tim Cook thinks "there's not much" competition to the company's iPad tablet. When queried about Apple's view on what the rest of the market offers, Cook was brutally candid in describing Windows-driven machines as generally being big, heavy and expensive, while current generations of Android-based slates are in his opinion merely "scaled-up smartphones." While we agree that Windows 7 isn't a terribly touch-friendly affair, we don't know that Cook's comments

Apple releases updates for iDVD, MacBook Air
Apple has dropped two new updates that you'll see in Software Update right now (if indeed you have the specific components they're designed to update). iDVD is first -- it's now upgraded to version 7.1.1, and the upgrade improves overall stability, as well as compatibility when bringing in slideshows directly from iPhoto.
And the MacBook Air has nabbed a (very) Late 2010 Software Update, which supposedly fixes some issues with the system going to sleep. I'm not 100% sure this MacBook Air update is new (not only is it listed as a "late 2010" update, but I don't have an Air to check on, and everyone on staff who does is currently

HP 7- and 9-inch webOS tablets leak with 4G, September debut
HP's webOS tablets were finally uncovered for the first time in a leak that has given some of their first concrete details. In addition to the nine-inch Topaz, a seven-inch counterpart known as the Opal is due to arrive with a heavy focus on e-reading. Both of the Palm-designed slates were identified by Engadget as having front facing cameras, micro USB for docking and what may be a unique "premium audio" focus with three speakers.

FCC approves Comcast's purchase of NBC, Justice Department up next
No huge surprise here, but the FCC just approved Comcast's purchase of NBC Universal by a 4-1 vote. Details of the ruling aren't out yet, but FCC chairman Julius Genachowski had been pushing for strong regulations forbidding Comcast from cutting itself sweetheart deals on NBC content or prioritizing its own video traffic on its pipes, so we'd assume that's part of the agreement here. The only nay vote was from Commissioner Michael Copps, who said the deal "opens the door to the cable-ization of the open Internet." Ouch. We'll let you know when we find out exactly what the FCC's actual condi

Two arrests have been made connected to the security breach that exposed thousands of iPad users' email addresses and other info last year. Article: On iPad 2 Cases: Here’s Why The Holes Keep Changing
Here’s one of Apple’s surprising little secrets: despite the company’s official position that every upcoming product must be shrouded in mystery until it’s officially unveiled on stage (or, rarely, in a press release), Apple’s retail arm has a somewhat different agenda. Since new hardware releases inevitably lead to sales of new—and highly profitable—accessories to customers who already have their wallets…

Apple: The undisputed leader in the tablet market
This might not be a surprise to anyone. Research firm IDC reports that the iPad represented nearly 90% of media tablets shipped in the third quarter of 2010. This is a fairly big deal because the tablet market itself picked up by a whopping 45%, going from 3.3 million tablets shipped in the second quarter to 4.8 million tablets shipped in the third quarter. With an increase of 1.5 million units being shipped in just three months, that's a sizeable increase in a growing market.
IDC restricts its study to tablets with screens larger than 5 inches but smaller than 14 inches. It also restricts the idea of "media tablets" to devices that run a "lightweight" operating system like iOS or Android. That's a

YikeBike review
Want to meet a bunch of random strangers everywhere you go? Start riding around on a neon green electric bicycle that looks like nothing this world has seen before, something tossed out of a passing UFO that some New Zealand shepherd found glowing slightly as it rested in the middle of a smoking crater. This $3,595 electric bicycle with a 15mph top speed and six mile range does come from New Zealand, but the YikeBike is very much a product of human ingenuity, or so creator Grant Ryan claims, but that doesn't stop it from giving us a riding experience that is nothing short of other-worldly. Unfortunately, that doesn't necessarily equate to a entirely perfect experience.

Sonos recounts its successes, dishes on future plans but not Android support
Amid the doom and gloom of the economic whatever it is we're stuck in at the moment, it's nice to look at a success story. Sonos is such a story and GigaOm has taken the time to profile the upstart, which started in 2002 and has gone on to produce a series of high-end docks, networked audio players, and an iOS controller app that ties it all together. Sadly, users of non-Apple devices have been left

Researchers at Harvard University's Center For Brain Science have successful manipulated nematode C. elegans worms by genetically modifying a select few of their 302 neurons. Not to be confused with magnetically controlled invertebrate, these creepy-crawlies are controlled by the CoLBeRT system (a nod to the comedian but no other relation), controlling locomotion and behavior in real time. Sprint hikes smartphone data rates by $10
Sprint today said it was raising the prices of data on all smartphones by $10. The "Premium Data" fee it had previously charged only for 4G phones like the Evo 4G and Epic 4G will now count against 3G smartphones for anyone activating a phone after January 30. It raises the minimum cost of using voice and data with a smartphone on Sprint to $80 per month, making it the most expensive.

Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu has raised his price target for Apple stock from $395 to $415, in spite of Steve Jobs taking a medical leave from the company, and the impending delivery of Q1 financial results. The figure is based on a higher gross margin prediction for the quarter, using different assumptions including new data suggesting "benign" component price trends. Wu is now calling for a margin of 37.5 percent, up from an estimate of 37.2, and Apple's own guidance of 36 percent.

Sprint increasing 3G data plan pricing by $10/mo, calling it 'premium data'
Oh, Sprint, you sneaky devil. The nation's third-largest carrier just announced that it's tacking on an extra monthly $10 "premium data" charge to its 3G Everything data plans -- in effect, charging 3G phone owners the same total price that Evo and Epic owners pay now for 4G service. It's especially weird because Sprint's hidden the price increase in a press release entitled "Smartphones Drive Wireless Data Explosion" that initially appears to be about increased use of data before shifting abruptly into a defense of the additional charge and potshots at tiered data plans -- we know no one wants to talk price increases, but let's hav

Rapunzel 3D and Goldilocks 3D are two US$1.99 interactive children's books from Bacciz Apps. I'm sorry to say that they're also not very good. They are complicated, inconsistent, and neither provides a satisfying story. Both titles use elements often seen before in other interactive children's books, but this time they are used seemingly at random. I don't believe children will enjoy either of these apps; instead, kids will likely become confused and frustrated at the "everything but the kitchen sink" design approach and the total inconsistency of the implementation.

Apple's demand "continues to stay strong" and forced Pegatron to step up its efforts, Digitimes understood.

Investors: Apple should give us their cash stockpile
While fund managers and other high-profile investors can't stop raving about the performance of Apple's stock, apparently it's not enough: they are increasing pressure on the company to divest itself of more of its staggering cash stockpile (now over $50 billion) in the form of returns to shareholders such as higher dividends and stock buybacks, the Wall Street Journal reports. Investors feel that the cash is not being leveraged or earning enough interest to merit Apple's hoarding -- particularly given that the firm has no real debt to speak of -- and analysts are sur

Dan Lyons, "Fake Steve Jobs," says goodbye -- for now
Dan Lyons of Newsweek has had a good run -- and made no small amount of capital -- off his "Fake Steve Jobs" character, featured on a satiric blog called The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs. Today, Lyons signed off "for now" on the blog, and wrote an article for The Daily Beast that claimed he's done. Problem is, he's made this claim before -- each time Jobs has taken a leave of absence, in fact -- making this new, humbler claim of wishing to respect Jobs' call for "privacy" (and lambasting his colleagues in the press who fail to do so) subject to a dose of skepticism.

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the term RAID, it stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives. In this review, I'll talk about RAID 0, which stores information on two or more drives that are linked together. RAID 0 is usually a much faster storage solution than just a single hard drive. RAID 1, on the other hand, just mirrors data written to one of the drives onto a second drive. It's great for creating a fairly bulletproof storage solution.
