US tablet sales to more than double, says Forrester
US tablet sales should more than double in 2011, says Forrester analyst Sarah Epps. Even though the firm's estimate for 2010 is being increased to 10.3 million units, Epps suggests that 2011 will be still more impressive with sales of 26 million. The trend is in fact predicted to accelerate well beyond the rate of PC sales, resulting in 82.1 million tablets in 2015. By contrast, only 44 million PCs are expected that year.

Macs coming back to Capitol Hill Senate offices
For years, members of Congress who wanted to use Macs in their offices were discouraged from doing so. That's all changing, and Thomas Burr of the Salt Lake Tribune now reports that freshman Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) will have his big screen iMac in his new office. His staff will be using Macs as well.
In previous years, senators' Macs were virtually eliminated by the office of the Senate Sergeant of Arms (where the chief administrative and IT management functions reside for the legislative chamber). ASUS Eee Pad MeMO tablet takes a pen out of the Courier's book
Yeah, we're in full-on tablet overload mode, but that doesn't mean there isn't any room for innovation. In fact, ASUS's Eee Pad MeMO is surprisingly fresh in its take on this already-so-worn subject. The 7-inch, 1024 x 600 tablet runs Android 3.0 (which doesn't exist yet, but we won't tell ASUS if you won't), with a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm 8260 processor under the hood and dual cameras (1.2 megapixel front, 5 megapixel rear with LED flash). That's all very nice, but the highlight is a capacitive stylus and two included apps to make the best use of it. ASUS Eee Pad Slider and Transformer are here for those that can't imagine using a tablet without a physical keyboard
Here they are: ASUS's duo of Tegra 2-powered, 10.1-inch tablets with unique physical keyboards. Lenovo goes back on its word and shows off an IdeaPad Windows 7 slate, we go hands-on
Remember when Lenovo said it wasn't going to do a Windows 7 slate product? We do too, but apparently the company has had a change of heart regarding Microsoft's operating system for tablets and has brought a 10.1-inch Windows 7 slate to CES. The IdeaPad tablet, which doesn't have a name right now, will be powered by Intel's forthcoming Oak Trail Atom processor and will run Windows 7 Home Premium with Lenovo's own application skin. Exclusive: LG Optimus Tab revealed?
Would you look at that. The device above could very well be the long rumored Optimus Tab we caught hanging out in the LG booth here in Las Vegas just moments ago. It certainly looked to be running Android 2.x beneath an 8.9 inch display but there's obviously no way to confirm the Tegra 2 processor. Whatever it is, LG was not very happy to have it on video judging by their quick "hey buddy!" request to shut down our camera. Sharp and Samsung's CES posters preview Smart TV apps, 70-inch Quattron LCD
Samsung and Sharp couldn't help but tip their hands regarding CES announcements with some of the posters wrapped around the Las Vegas Convention Center. While Sharp is advertising its largest Quattron LCD ever at 70-inches (up from a mere 68-inch version before) Samsung is taking the opportunity to invite everyone to "join in" its Smart TV platform. No word on whether that encompasses its expected Google TV efforts or just existing Samsung Apps, but icons listed included the already available Google Maps, Facebook, Twitter and more, check out a few more pictures after the break.

Lenovo LePad tablet and IdeaPad U1 Hybrid return with Android 2.2 in tow
Remember last year at CES 2010 when Lenovo made a huge scene with the tablet / netbook U1 Hybrid, which ran Windows when docked and Lenovo's Skylight Linux in tablet mode? And then Lenovo killed Skylight in favor of Android and put everything on hold? Well, it's back -- and we just got some serious hands-on time with production-ready Chinese versions of what's now being called the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid with LePad tablet. Things have substantially changed for the better in the past year -- in addition to Lenovo's skinned version of Android 2.2 (called LeOS, sigh), there's now a newer 1.3GHz Snapdragon in the LePad and an 1.2GHz Intel Core i5-540UM in the U1 base. HP to make major webOS announcement on Feb. 9th
HP is sending out press invitations to a special webOS event on February 9th, reports say. The event will take place in San Francisco, and is being advertised with the slogan "Think big. Think small. Think beyond." Notably missing from the invitation graphic is Palm, which was bought by HP and originally created webOS; HP may be phasing out the Palm name.

Fujifilm's 16 megapixel CES debutants leaked early: 30x superzoom and 1080p-recording compact
Nobody is immune from a CES leak, it seems, as even the relatively tame waters of high-end compact and superzoom cameras have been ruffled up today with the emergence of two 16 megapixel Fujifilm models. Both sport an EXR-CMOS sensor, with the bigger brother HS20EXR boasting a 30x zoom (equivalent to covering the 28mm to 720mm range in old school photography parlance) zoom lens along with a 3-inch LCD on the back and an electronic viewfinder. Samsung announces three new external drive lines
Samsung has announced two new portable drive lines and one desktop external hard drive line for the consumer market. The new drives use the USB 3.0 interface, which can provide data transfer rates up to five gigabits per second. Samsung's premium portable drives offer up to 1TB storage capacity, 256-bit hardware based encryption, and can perform automatic or continuous backup. The premium portable drives also ship with software to perform encrypted backups. The drives will be available in Onyx black, Sapphire blue, and Coral pink.

Verizon Wireless nixing early upgrades and New Every Two program?
Fan of the early upgrade? Hope you're not on Big Red, then. Android Central's obtained what's purported to be a slide from Verizon's training material, one that says customers on a two-year contract "will no longer be able to upgrade in months 13 - 20 of their 24 month contract as a standard policy" after January 16th. As for the the New Every Two deal, pared down once already in February 2009, new customers won't be enrolled if they activate or upgrade a line, also after the 16th. Eye-Fi's Direct Mode transfers images from camera to phone
Eye-Fi has debuted a new feature for its X2 cards, Direct Mode (website not updated). The option blends Eye-Fi cards and Eye-Fi mobile apps to allow direct transfer between a camera and an iOS device or various smartphones. Navigon offers free Nevada nav app for CES attendees
If you're headed to the big CES show (and we know a lot of our readers attend), Navigon can at least keep you from getting lost in Las Vegas.
For just a few days, you can download a special Audi-branded version of Navigon's GPS app that covers the whole state of Nevada. The special version includes Google local search, weather and location sharing. A pedestrian mode gives you walking directions, which is a big deal during CES. The app supports several languages, so visitors from outside the US will be well served.

Sony poster at CES shows off unannounced, extremely slim-looking phone
Sony's CES banners have been unfurled around the Las Vegas Convention Center here and one of them has a particularly alluring, and particularly skinny, handset to show us. The above image of half a touchscreen handset (more closeup photography of which you'll find in the gallery below) shows a Sony Ericsson brand and what looks like a 3.5mm headphone jack -- the latter of which would suggest that this phone is no more than six or seven millimeters in width. Verizon's Palm Pre 2 gets teased on Walmart's site... in case someone still cares
With the next big thing out of Sunnyvale just weeks away, it's hard to believe anyone much cares about about the Pre 2 at this point -- but for what it's worth, Walmart's now pimping the Verizon-flavored version of the phone on its LetsTalk-powered website for a release at some indeterminate point in the future. Kodak outs ESP C310 all-in-one printer
Kodak has announced it will display the new ESP C310 color multifunction printer at CES2011. The printer uses Kodak's new 30 Series ink cartridges, which company claims the provides the lowest total ink replacement cost. AirStash brings Wi-Fi WebDAV media storage to iPad, iPhone
Wearable has announced a new companion drive, the AirStash with WebDAV. iOS handheld owners can transfer files to and from the device via wireless or USB connections. Wireless support allows it to stream music, photos and videos, effectively expanding the maximum memory available to an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

Logitech's HD Pro Webcam C910 now ready for Photo Booth, iChat and FaceTime
Although Apple includes an iSight or FaceTime webcam in almost every Mac, the low resolution (640 x 480 pixels for most machines, 1280 x 960 resampled to 640 x 480 for new MacBook Pros) of the cameras has lagged behind the webcams available from other computer manufacturers. Logitech markets a large number of HD webcams, but few of them have been compatible with Mac OS X. Until now, that is.

Firefox beats Internet Explorer in Europe, according to at least one Statcounter
Measuring browser use is an inexact science, we all know that, but at least one traffic monitor is reporting that Firefox has managed to beat out Internet Explorer as the most popular browser in the fine continent that is Europe. Griffin kicked off CES with a bang today by introducing several new products including the new CarTrip hardware and CleanDrive app for iOS or Android.
CarTrip is a Bluetooth-enabled monitor that plugs into your car's OBD-II port and compiles the data logged by the car's onboard computer. Data accessible to the Griffin device includes car acceleration, top speed, fuel consumption and diagnostic codes. Japanese government urges Apple to add content filtering to the iPhone
The iPhone is climbing up the ranks in the crowded Japanese mobile phone market, recently reaching the number five position behind Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu and Kyocera. It's hardly a done deal when a relationship is described as in "talks." Nevertheless, D-Link and Snapstick are definitely working together to evaluate Snapstick's SplitMedia technology. Snapstick, as you'll recall, lets you snap any web content (with a focus on video services from Hulu, YouTube and the like) over WiFi from your smartphone to a D-Link box connected to a TV. Deutsche Bank analyst: Holiday Mac and iPad sales higher than expected
We've been speculating about just how popular iPads were during the first Christmas season with the revolutionary device, and we're also wondering how other Apple products did during the holidays.
In a report cited by AppleInsider, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore says that sales of both iPads and Macs were better than expected, based on spot checks made by the company. Atheros at CES brought out a combination wireless chipset that could significantly improve the speed of smartphones and tablets. Its AR6233 merges both 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 and reportedly provides the extra features of both without an extra hit to the battery. You know Atheros, right? The company known for its various wireless networking products has just announced a little something called the AR6233. Billed as "the first SIP solution to support the new Bluetooth 4.0 standard," this system-in-package (that's what SIP stands for -- but you already knew that) sports the aforementioned Bluetooth radio, as well as 802.11n "with a near-zero impact on the battery life of portable devices." Google is developing its own NFC-based wireless payment system that could go head-to-head with not just possible options from Apple but also upcoming industry standards, a pair of insiders said Tuesday. The approach would let users buy goods at stores with an Android 2.3 or later phone like the Nexus S just by getting close to an NFC transceiver. As we mentioned in our 3D roundup, the advantage of Mitsubishi sticking to DLP technology for its HDTVs is easily seen in square inches per dollar spent, and they're going to push that even further by introducing a 92-inch HDTV in 2011. Sony is quietly adding bonus feature content to select iTunes releases including the Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg action comedy The Other Guys, Salt and Resident Evil: Afterlife. Here are some facts we know about this subject:
This is a tablet called the Multimedia Novel, built by Pandigital.
It's very much like another Multimedia Novel tablet Pandigital sells at CVS for $214, except now it's $280 because there's a 3G radio inside.
We really disliked the 7-inch version.
It's on AT&T but it's contract free -- you pay as you go.
The 9-inch screen is resistive, which sucks even if there's contract free AT&T on it. That's just our opinion, though.

Ford installs Sync in more than 3 million cars, takes a moment to congratulate self
Ford and Microsoft's little voice control in-car connectivity project seems to be doing pretty well for itself, judging by the latest milestone it has passed. Sync has just been announced to have crossed the three million mark when counting the cars it's installed in, with recent data suggesting takeup for the $395 optional extra is growing. Nearly 80 percent of purchases of current 2011 Ford models include Sync, while over 80 percent of those already using it say they'd recommend the service to others. Apples Marktkapitalisierung überstieg am gestrigen Handelstag an der New-Yorker-Technologiebörse NASDAQ die Hürde von 300 Milliarden US-Dollar. Mit einem Kurs-Schlusswert von 329.57 US-Dollar beträgt die Marktkapitalisierung derzeit 302.32 Milliarden US-Dollar. Mit einem Kurs von zwischenzeitlich 330.26 US-Dollar, stellte die Aktie von Apple gestern zudem ein neues Allzeithoch auf. Mit dem neuen Marktkapitalisierungswert ist Apple zum zweiten Mal nach Oktober 2010 wieder das zweit-wertvollste Unternehmen der Welt — noch mehr Wert auf dem Markt hat nur Exxon Mobil. Exxon Mobil liegt aktuell bei 375.92 Milliarden US-Dollar.
Zum Vergleich: Microsofts Marktkapitalisierung liegt aktuell bei 239.38, Googles bei 193.26 und HPs bei 93.62 Milliarden US-Dollar.

Wow. Color me surprised on this one -- I've been joking around lately about iPhone company acquisitions and buyouts, but here's two companies that never occurred to me. Firemint, creators of the popular Flight Control and Real Racing 2 games on iOS, has outright purchased Infinite Interactive, the company behind a bevy of console and handheld console titles, including the very popular (and personal favorite of mine) Puzzle Quest series. Samsung's new 9 Series LED-backlit 3DTV goes for asymmetric beauty with a Touch of Color
We might already be here at CES in Las Vegas, but that isn't stopping Samsung from doing some very last minute teasing. Apple senkt Schweizer iPod-Preise
Per 1. Januar 2011 wurden die SUISA-Gebühren für DVDs und digitale Musikabspielgeräte gesenkt — dies zeigt sich nun auch im Apple Store, denn Apple hat die Preise aller iPod-Modelle (ausgenommen iPod shuffle) gesenkt. Der «Gemeinsame Tarif 4 c» der SUISA beträgt neu 30 bis 70 Rappen pro Gigabyte. Damit wird die «iPod-Steuer», wie die Gebühren auch genannt werden, erstmals seit eineinhalb Jahren wieder gesenkt. Lenovo IdeaPad Y470, Y570 boot faster than MacBook Air
Lenovo's PC updates on Tuesday were headlined by two IdeaPad notebooks that claim to be more responsive than even the MacBook Air. The 14-inch Y470, as well as the 15.6-inch Y570 and Y570d, each have the option of a 32GB or 64GB SSD for the OS alongside a regular hard drive. Along with Intel's new Sandy Bridge processors and optimizations to the boot process, they can start in as little as 10 seconds, versus Apple's 15 seconds, while still holding as much as 1TB of regular space.

HP puts out desktop LCDs with 1,000,000:1 contrast
HP today brought out four Compaq desktop displays aimed at business but with a view to features normally reserved for the home. At the top, the 20-inch LA2006x, 21.5-inch LA2206x and 23-inch LA2306x all have LED-backlit panels that, while lower color TN panels, produce very high 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. HP updates Envy 17, dv6, and dv7 with Sandy Bridge, gives Mini 210 some new threads
No surprises here -- HP just updated a bunch of its consumer laptops here at CES, and the biggest change is that the Envy 17 and Pavilion dv6 and dv7 have been kicked over to Intel's Sandy Bridge second-gen Core processors. Disney commits to 'at least 15' Blu-ray 3D releases for 2011 including Tron: Legacy
Even though Blu-ray 3D officially hit the streets in 2010, actually finding any discs available at retail was easier said than done, but that may be turning around this year starting with Disney announcing it plans "at least 15" releases this year. Apple's UK prices rise after VAT increase
Several European countries saw their online Apple stores go down for several hours earlier today, with the familiar yellow sticky note greeting customers in the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and others. Some speculated this meant a new product launch, but stores in Asia/Pacific and North America remained up all day. It turns out that in at least one country, the UK, something new did debut on the Apple Store today: higher prices. The increase in the UK's value-added tax (VAT) from 17.5 percent to 20 percent went into effect today, and Apple has raised its UK prices to account for the difference.
In some cases the price rise is relatively modest. A 16 GB iPhone 4 now costs £11 more than it used to, while a 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad costs £10 more. However, MacBook Pro and

Opera for tablets teased on video, bringing first public preview to CES (video)
As if building a top notch browser wasn't hard enough when having to develop for both desktop and mobile, here comes Opera with a third category: tablet-specific browsers. Opera for tablets has just been teased on video, exploiting a Galaxy Tab to show off slippery smooth pinch-to-zoom functionality plus a finger-friendly landing page for all your favorite websites when opening a new window. Microsoft may compete with Apple TV, Google TV at CES
Microsoft may to compete with Apple and Google in the TV media hub front at CES if a claim this evening is accurate. The hardware would ship with a custom version of Windows Embedded with Windows Media Center on top. News Anchor 2 reads RSS feeds aloud in "news show" style
Basil Salad Software will be releasing a new version of their hands-free RSS feed read-aloud program, News Anchor v2, in the forthcoming Mac App Store. We've already heard that Sharp was planning to bring its Galapagos tablets / e-readers to the US, and it looks like they've now crossed one key hurdle on that path -- or one of the tablets has, at least. AliveCor case turns iPhone 4 into high-quality ECG
Seattle-based AliveCor is unveiling a wireless casing for the iPhone 4 called the iPhone ECG that, combined with an accompanying app, turns the device into a hospital-quality electro-cardiogram measuring instrument (ECG) at the Consumer Electronics Show later this week. As reported by MacStories and created for Italian magazine Panorama by Tsevis Visual Design, this picture of Apple CEO Steve Jobs is entirely made up of Apple's white products laid out to create a visually arresting portrait. Chrome closes out the year with ten percent browser share, gains at expense of IE
It may not exactly look like a huge shift in the chart above, but 2010 did represent something of a milestone year for Google's Chrome web browser. HandBrake updated, drops PPC version
HandBrake, a free video transcoding tool that works in combination with VLC to rip and convert videos for personal use, has been updated to v0.9.5, the first update in over a year -- bringing updated libraries, better subtitle support, more presets, AC3 encoding support and universal audio down-mixing, among other features. Blu-Ray disc structure support has been added (though there is still no decryption support), and Mac users gain a new Audio Panel that supports more than four audio tracks -- though PPC Mac support appears to have been dropped.

Citibank: Apple could pull in $2 billion in App Store revenues in 2011
Right before the year switched over, Citibank released its "US Internet Stock 2011 Playbook," and in there was an interesting prediction about the App Store. Despite what seems like constantly falling prices, and the rise of "freemium" apps, Citibank expects Apple to pull in $2 billion in gross app revenue in 2011 alone. That's comparable to gross revenue for the entire online video advertising market, according to TechCrunch. And presumably this is just the iOS App Store -- later this week we'll be seeing the first fruits of the Mac App Store arrive, and it's likely that market will pull in a nice chunk of change for Apple as well.

iHome announced that it will demo several new products in its line of audio accessories for the iPad at CES. The iDM70 Sound Sleeve integrates its own rechargable lithium-ion battery into a into a premium iPad case with NXT flat-panel speakers. As the name implies, the iDM70 includes a faux leather case with a protective inner silicone inner sleeve that has cutouts for headphone jack, dock connector, on/off and volume controls. Apple patent describes touch gestures on iPod nano
Could "no-look" touch gestures be coming soon to the iPod nano? Recently discovered by ipodnn, a 2009 patent application by Apple shows that it is looking into letting users control their devices using no-look gestures which only require a touch-sensitive surface like a trackpad and not necessarily a graphic interface as Apple currently employs on the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
Diagrams filed with the patent application show different methods that owners could use gestures on their device, such as a single tap to play and pause media playback, a double tap to skip forward

iHome intros iDM12 micro-soundbar, iDM15 Bluetooth speakers and iDM70 'Sound Sleeve'

HandBrake 0.9.5 released, adds presets and more for easier DVD ripping
It's been over a year since the amazing free DVD ripping software (also known as a "video transcoder"), HandBrake, has been updated. Life is good, and Handbrake 0.9.5 has now been released.
There are a ton of changes in this release, and you can get into the details in the change release notes. For the Mac version of the software, the biggest news is that PowerPC is no longer supported. If you're still holding on to an older Mac, it's time to either consider a hardware upgrade or you'll be using HandBrake 0.9.4 for the rest of eternity.

Casio shows off multi-hinged TRYX camera outside CES, prematurally outs press shots
Well, would you have a look at this? Details are scarce right now, but by the looks of these ads outside CES, this Casio TRYX imager sports two hinges for the sake of versatility: one for the frame that doubles as a handle or a stand, and one for swiveling the display -- presumably a touchscreen since there are just a couple of buttons on the body. Coincidentally, Google also led us to the TRYX's stash of press shots which have now been pulled, but we've got you guys a screenshot for the time being -- it's not like it'll be long before all is unveiled, anyway.

Intel announces Core 2011 processor details; hackintosh fans post benchmarks
Intel, the company that makes the processors used in every Mac currently being manufactured, officially announced the details of the new Sandy Bridge processors, otherwise known as the Intel Core 2011 processors. These are the second generation of the Core processors found in many of Apple's products (i.e., the Core i3, i5, and i7 CPUs), and the new silicon could herald good news for future Macs. The Sandy Bridge processor family uses Intel's 32nm microarchitecture and is the first to put the processor, memory controller, and graphics on the same die. In a nutshell, this means more performance and better energy efficiency.

Kinect hack turns you into a punching, waving MIDI controller (video)
If you're looking for an awesome, impractical way to make music with your computer (and who isn't?) please direct your attention to the following Kinect hack. Shinect, the brainchild of a YouTube user named Shinyless, uses motion detection to turn you into a MIDI controller! The current implementation gives the operator two virtual pads that can be activated by the old Jersey Shore fist pump -- and if that ain't enough, the sounds can be pitchshifted by raising / lowering the other arm. MiLi to debut iOS-to-HDTV docking station at CES
Apple mobile device accessory maker MiLi Power, celebrating 2011 with a new management team and other new products, will debut the MiLi HD docking station specifically aimed at iOS devices at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) convention, being held January 6-9. Study: 40% of iPad owners have Kindles too
Despite stereotypes, almost half of iPad owners also have a Kindle at the same time, JPMorgan found in a new study. About 40 percent have Amazon's e-reader, and another 23 percent still plan to buy one in the next year. Only 23 percent have no plans, and 14 percent didn't know what a Kindle was.
