mSpot brings iTunes streaming to the iPhone
TUAW has been watching users' need to stream music from the cloud for a while, especially since Apple acquired Lala some time ago. Understandably, we were a little disappointed when we found out that an official cloud-based iTunes would probably be limited in scope.

PhotoPal is a powerful but easy to use iPad photo editor
PhotoPal, on sale for US $0.99 until December 20th, is aimed at the novice photographer who wants to do some pretty serious editing of images on the iPad. Fortunately, Apple's tablet is well suited to this kind of work, simply because of the larger screen. FCC to auction off more 700MHz airwaves July 19
The FCC today slated a second auction of 700MHz frequencies that could help boost 4G access in the US. Agency officials are selling access to 16 licenses between 698MHz and 806MHz, grouped into a Block A of just two frequencies at the low end and a Block B that has the remaining licenses. The auction should take place on July 19.

HTC's Peter Chou says LTE handsets are coming next year, and the world keeps on spinning

Rush of illustrated titles accompanies iBooks 1.2 update
Over 100 illustrated books have been added to the iBookstore in tandem with the release of iBooks 1.2, says the New York Times. These are spread across several different genres, including cooking, photography and children's books. LED Cinema Display 27" Firmware Update 1.0 soll Audio-Probleme beheben

MS posts major Bing update for Android and iPhone, skips WP7
Microsoft at its Bing Search Summit posted major updates for its Bing mobile app on Android and iPhone (free, App Store) that both catch up with and move it past some of Google's own tools, primarily on the iPhone. The iOS app now has Streetside views and, like its desktop counterpart, builds on Google Street View's formula with a live list of businesses based on the direction. Mass transit is now finally official and will even include real-time updates in some cities to let users know if a bus might be early or late.

News: Man pleads guilty in iTunes fraud scheme
A U.K. man has become the first of a group of 11 defendants to plead guilty in a case relating to the use of iTunes and stolen or fraudulent credit cards to steal royalty fees. 19-year-old Lamar Johnson pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud, according to a BBC report. UA engineers develop 'invisible,' fiber optic border monitoring system

Apple wins claims on 19 US patents
Apple has won 19 patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office, reports say. Some of the more prominent ones document the iPhone's treatment of audio playback and conference calls, as well as display, sale and downloading of media at the iTunes Store. A call for more storage in iOS devices
Back in the olden days, when I bought my first Disk ][ to hang onto my Apple ][ Plus, I was amazed at how much the 140KB floppy drive could store. After using it for a while, I was sure that it was big enough to hold every program I'd ever buy, and most of the programs my kids would need as well. T-Mobile drops Samsung Galaxy Tab to $350 on-contract
Been waiting for a carrier to shave a bit off the price of the Galaxy Tab before you took the plunge? Well, you now have your first option to consider -- T-Mobile has just knocked $50 off the on-contract price of the tablet, bringing it own to $349.99 for those willing to sign a two-year term (the off-contract price unfortunately remains unchanged). Incidentally, T-Mobile has also dropped the price of the Samsung Vibrant down to $150, although that's not the first time a Galaxy S device has been discounted. Windows Phone 7 'Mango' may catch up with HTML5, Silverlight
Microsoft may be readying a major update to Windows Phone 7 that would help it catch up to its rivals, most of all in web browsing, Microsoft sources claimed on Wednesday. So far codenamed "Mango," the update would add HTML5 to the web browser and would add support for Silverlight outside of WP7's own foundations, possibly as a plugin. It would be much larger than the one or two minor updates expected in early 2011 and could be tantamount to a "Windows Phone 7.5," ZDNet understood.

TextExpander 3.2.2 available, fixes auto-capitalization bugs
TextExpander, a very useful application which will automatically expand various text macros for you, has been updated to 3.2.2. The release notes indicate that 3.2.1 was submitted to the Mac App Store, and that Dropbox syncing had been improved.
The Smile Software blog also notes that auto-capitalization has also been improved, solving many of the annoying issues with the recent feature. Notably, if you switched from one app to another and then back, TextExpander sometimes thought that was a new sentence and auto-capitalized it. Editorial: RIM seems to be as lost as my BlackBerry
The only way to open this editorial is to admit something I've been rather shy about on the pages of Engadget: I've been an avid BlackBerry fan and user for about six years now. I mean a real addict -- the kind who wakes up each morning looking for a blinking red LED, the kind who's refused to give up push email and BlackBerry Messenger in favor of more powerful, polished, and progressive mobile operating systems like iOS, Android, and webOS. Apple has released a minor update to iTunes for Mac and Windows machines. Version 10.1.1 addresses several bugs, including issues that had caused the software to quit when users attempted to resize the window or delete a playlist that had the iTunes sidebar showing. Study: 78% of corporate buyers want iPad so far, 9% PlayBook
Over three quarters of corporate buyers planning to buy tablets in early 2011 still plan to get iPads, ChangeWave said in a new study. About 78 percent of those committed to tablets in the first three months of next year were intent on getting an iPad. Nikon's taken criticism of its enthusiast-friendly P7000 compact to heart and has today announced a fresh firmware for that shooter. Windows Phone 7 said to be getting major 'Mango' update in August or September
We'd already heard that Windows Phone 7 is set to get an update of some sort early next year -- possibly coinciding with Mobile World Congress in February -- but ZD Net's Mary Jo Foley is now reporting that an even bigger update could be following in August or September. According to her sources, the update is codenamed "Mango," and it will effectively amount to Windows Phone 7.5, which she says might even be the actual name when it's released. TUAW TV Live at 5 PM ET -- EyeTV HD, one week with a MacBook Air, and more
Whenever I need to think of a topic for TUAW TV Live, I just look around my cluttered (or is it messy?) office and I usually find inspiration.
Today's inspiration comes from a device that should have been reviewed long ago -- Elgato's EyeTV HD (US$199.95), a Mac-based DVR / Tuner that works with satellite and cable HD boxes. Apple awarded patents for RF synchronization, Time Machine, and more
Yesterday was a busy day for the gnomes at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as they awarded 19 patents to Apple for intellectual property ranging from "RF Pulse Synchronization for Data Acquisition Operations" to a couple of ideas that are implemented in Time Machine. All were reported on by the eagle-eyed bloggers at Patently Apple.
The Time Machine patents cover navigation of backups and a method of resolving conflicts when restoring files from a backup. Google Fiber gets new leader, city picks slip to early 2011
Google on Wednesday said it was pushing back its decision on the cities for Google Fiber to early 2011. It had originally planned to detail the cities and areas getting 1Gbps Internet access but was "not quite ready" to say which ones. Apple climbs to 5th place in July-Sept. Japan cellphone market
The Mainichi Daily News and Japan Today are citing a "market research institute" which has ranked the iPhone fifth place in Japan's dense cell phone market. This is for the July-September rankings, as Apple was seventh in the April-June quarter. It was just two weeks ago that we looked at the Evernote for Mac beta. Today Evernote 2.0 for Mac is finally available, with a slew of new features like notebooks stacks and sharing, UI improvements and more. Here's a quick look at Evernote 2.0 for Mac.

Google attempt to buy Spotify said foiled by infighting
Google had tried to make buyout offers for Rhapsody and Spotify but was sabotaged by its own corporate culture, a rumor alleged today. The company had wanted a subscription music service to fulfill its own music store plans, but the three divisions jockeying for the deal couldn't agree and move ahead, the SAI sources said. iBooks 1.2 introduces collections, illustrated titles
Apple has pushed out a new version of iBooks, 1.2. The app's primary upgrade is support for fully illustrated books from the iBookstore, where previously titles were limited to inline images. Also new is the expected concept of Collections, which allows grouping books or PDFs together for easier browsing.

iBooks 1.2 now available from the App Store
Apple has released iBooks 1.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with some swell new features. First, it offers support for full illustrations (you know, just like real books). It will also create collections of your books and PDFs, which is quite nice. To create a collection, simply tap the collections button and choose a name. To add a book, tap Edit and then Move. Move between collections by swiping left and right.
AirPrint is also supported (as long as you're one of The Chosen with a compatible printer) for printing PDFs and notes in books, and Apple has even managed to fit more words on a page by automatically hyphenating text (that feature is restricted to iOS 4.2).

Toshiba denies rumor Apple will invest in display factory
Remember the factory that Toshiba and Apple are supposed to be building together? According to DigiTimes, it turns out that Toshiba is not actually on board with the idea. T-Mobile, Nokia Siemens working on 650Mbps 3G standard
Nokia Siemens Networks and T-Mobile USA today outlined early plans for an extremely fast 3G format that could let them and any other provider get better-than-4G speeds. Long Term HSPA Evolution (LTHE) would boost performance from the 42Mbps of HSPA+ today to 650Mbps. The speeds would fall short of the theoretical 1Gbps peak of LTE Advanced but should still reach a similar 100Mbps-plus in real conditions, giving future 4G speeds without the need to switch technologies altogether.

The addition of the iPhone to Verizon should increase Apple's total US iPhone sales by about 2.5 million next year, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Das dachte sich auch Erica Sadun von TUAW und hat flugs eine App gebastelt, die den umgekehrten Weg ermöglicht: AirPlayer tut so als wäre der Rechner ein AppleTV und erlaubt so das Übertragen von Videos vom iDevice auf ihn. Fossil's Watch Technology VP Bill Geiser in an interview with Robert Scoble posted on Thursday showed a pair of watches that would intelligently pull information from smartphones. The prototypes talk to the phone over Bluetooth and get information that would work on a small grayscale LCD, such as calendars, weather and notifications for unaddressed calls, e-mail and SMS. Even non-essentials such as Twitter mentions could appear, he said, although the limited resolution would cut off information on many updates.

T-Mobile already cutting Samsung Galaxy Tab, Vibrant prices

At the end of my review of Infinity Blade from Epic Games, I said that I liked the game, but I wished there was more of it. It looks like I'm getting my wish much earlier than I'd anticipated, because new content for Infinity Blade is coming next week. Daito Manabe's sensor-based drum machine might actually melt your face off

Rogers first to bring back post-sale iPhone unlocking
Canadian carrier Rogers and its sub-brand Fido have brought back a system that would let customers more officially unlock iPhones after the sale, a possible leak of its strategy has uncovered. As part of a broader move that would let any subscriber out when out of contract, Rogers has let users get an unlock by calling its help line and having them contact Apple. Google under fire for promoting own content ahead of competing websites
This isn't exactly a new allegation, but the idea's spreading fast: Google is tuning search results to favor itself, and perhaps that's not entirely fair. Apple wins Canadian gov't approval of iBookstore
The Ministry of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages has granted formal approval to the Canadian iBookstore, opening the door to a flood of new content from Canadian publishers and authors. While the iBookstore has already been operating and offering some -- mostly US-based -- paid titles along with the usual assortment of free public-domain and PDF texts, the approval is expected to boost both the offerings available to Canadian iOS device owners as well as help promote Canadian works in other countries.

Five men rob Apple Store in Greenwich, CT
Apple Store burglars have struck again, this time in Greenwich, Connecticut. Police say that at least five suspects, seen in the surveillance photo to the right, broke through the front door and helped themselves to a whole bunch of Apple products valued in the tens of thousands of dollars. The store obviously had security cameras in place to record the break-in when it happened, but I wonder if any employees also got to watch the robbery in real-time like this guy who watched on his iPhone as thieves robbed his house.

US Army Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications programs putting smartphones in soldiers' hands this February
Earlier this year, DARPA put out RFIs with an eye on developing military apps and an app store for iOS and Android, and now the US Army's Connecting Soldiers to Digital Applications (CSDA) program will put handsets, network equipment, and other equipment including tablets, e-readers, and pico projectors into the hands of the First Army Brigade this February. Nexus S in stock on Carphone Warehouse's site a little early
So this is how it was supposed to go: Best Buy would start selling the Nexus S in the States on December 16th, and Carphone Warehouse would follow on a few days later -- the 20th, to be exact -- in the UK. Looks like the British are going rogue here, though, because Samsung's Gingerbread-packed slate is showing "in stock" on Carphone Warehouse's site right this very moment, which should theoretically mean it ships the same day if you order it before 5PM local time. Dell: 'Venue Pros are being reworked in the factories,' ship schedule unclear
The Venue Pro delay situation certainly isn't getting any clearer with Dell's latest update on its support forums, but we know this much for sure: the new kid on the smartphone block still has a few things to learn about shipping handsets. Apple Store in Greenwich CT burglarized
Thieves smashed the glass front of the Greenwich Avenue Apple Store in Greenwich, CT early this morning and quickly made off with "tens of thousands of dollars" in merchandise before fleeing, according to police reports. The burglary, which occurred at just before 3 a.m., destroyed one of the glass doors, forcing the store to close Tuesday. In photos taken by the Stamford Advocate, employees were shown cleaning up broken glass and damaged displays.

Advent pulls Flash from Vega tablet due to unoptimized code
Advent later on Monday said (PDF) it would pull support for Flash 10.1 from its Vega tablet until early 2011. The decision was made as Flash did "not exhibit the optimal performance" of NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 2 chip with some Flash sites. Adobe hadn't certified Flash for the Android tablet and needed to optimize it for the Tegra 2 first, Advent said.

First iAd for iPad features Tron Legacy
The first iPad iAd has been released today and it's for Disney's upcoming film Tron Legacy. The iAd features video from the Tron movie, which leads to an interactive menu. The menu itself is designed to look like a light disc and allows the viewer to navigate to a photo gallery, movie trailer, theater finder, email notifier, story synopsis, and a preview of the movie soundtrack.
An Apple spokesperson told AdAge that the Tron Legacy iAd will be the only iAd to appear on the iPad this year. Best Buy sees big drop in TV sales, eases pain with beefy mobile revenue
Best Buy's stock took a 14.8 percent beating today on news that it earned $217 million in the third quarter -- a 4.4 percent decline year over year -- and felt compelled to revise its fourth quarter forecast downwards. LG at a preview ahead of CES today previewed a pair of new TVs and a home theater audio bar.
