2.8 million downloads for Gun Bros, 7.8 million for Zombie Farm
I am anxiously awaiting some stats on this past week's releases in the App Store -- over the past two weeks, we've seen some gigantic games released for iOS, and yet familiar names like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, and Fruit Ninja are still topping the charts (along with some big EA titles benefiting from that price drop). RIM beats earnings estimates, falls just shy on subscriber growth; co-CEOs now co-chairmen, too
For now, RIM's looming mindshare problem is more theoretical than it is practical -- as far as Wall Street's concerned, at least -- on today's news that they've beaten the consensus estimates for fiscal Q3 revenue and income with $5.49 billion and $911.1 million, respectively. The company also shipped a record 14.2 million units in the three-month period, up a whopping 40 percent year-over-year, but subscriber additions fell a bit short -- 5.1 million versus the 5.2 million that analysts had counted on. Investigations of HP bribery expand to Europe
Investigations into HP bribery for government contracts have expanded into Europe, HP revealed in an SEC filing (PDF late Wednesday. Both the SEC and the Department of Justice were looking into allegations that it paid kickbacks not just to Russia but also Austria, the Commonwealth of Independent States, Germany, the Netherlands and Serbia. Two "former HP executives" were involved as far back as 2000, HP said, one of which was known to be HP's sales head in Russia.

Apple Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.5
Apple today released another Digital Camera RAW Compatibility update. Version 3.5 provides RAW format compatibility for imaging applications like Aperture and iPhoto for these new cameras:

Nikon COOLPIX P7000
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2
These cameras have been added to the list of digital camera RAW files supported by Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and are in addition to those currently listed on Apple's Support website. You can view the list of supported cameras here, or download the update from MacUpdate.

Opera 11 now available for download
There's no Scandinavian-themed video this time around, but Opera Software has just released the final, non-beta version of its Opera 11 web browser, which promises a couple of big changes and a slew of other more minor refinements. Among the biggest additions are what Opera calls "tab stacking," which lets you create groups of tabs to manage dozens of open web pages a bit more effectively, and "visual mouse gestures," which is sort of like mulitouch gestures but -- you know -- with a mouse. The second Humble Indie Bundle has gone public, offering buyers five games at a price of their own choosing. The bundle includes Braid, Cortex Command, Machinarium, Osmos and Revenge of the Titans. Each title is DRM-free, and can run on Mac, Windows, or Linux systems. As the bundle is mainly a charity deal, buyers can pick where the money they send ends up. Dell Venue Pro arriving before Christmas if you ordered by the 14th

JP Morgan ups Apple price target to $420
JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has assigned a new, higher $420 price target to Apple stock, suggesting that the Mac will once again play an important or even dominant role in Apple growth. China launches state-sponsored, Twitter-esque Red Microblog, Kanye West already has the most followers
China has launched a state-sponsored micro-blogging site which is apparently identical to Twitter, except that it's run by the Chinese government, of course. The brand new social network, named Red Microblog, is run by a local propaganda department in Chongqing and its purpose is to promote the official revolutionary spirit of the Chinese government. Nexus S torn asunder, its curves laid out on display
You've already seen ninjas take on the Nexus S box, now see the device laid out component-by-component, thrashed by some sick and twisted individual. Nothing too crazy to see here, except perhaps the awesome curves of the front display laid out (another shot after the break). It's interesting to note that only the front panel is actually curved -- "the rest of the components are flat as a board, just as any other phone on the market." PlayStation app comes to Android and iPhone, no games inside
Sony in a minor surprise today showed an official PlayStation app in the works for Android and the iPhone. Despite the name, the app doesn't include games themselves and is primarily to track a PSN account. Gamers will see their PSN friends' status and check both their own trophies as well as compare against friends.

iPad hits 50,000 apps in eight months
MacStories points out that according to the listings in the iTunes App Store, the iPad has reached an unofficial total of 50,000 apps in just the eight months since software started selling for the device. An executive at Flextronics, a parts supplier to Apple, passed on secret information about the iPad and iPhone 4 before their announcements, according to a new report. iPhone, iPad info plays role in insider trading sting
Apple secrets are playing an essential role in an FBI sweep directed at insider trading, notes Business Insider. Four people have been arrested in the case, while a fifth has already plead guilty and is a cooperating witness. One of the newly arrested people -- Walter Shimoon, Flextronics' VP of business development -- was caught sharing information about the iPad and the iPhone 4 back in 2009, when both were highly safeguarded.

New Sharp LCD factory may focus mostly on iPhone
Sharp is spending the equivalent of $1.2 billion on an LCD factory that will primarily serve Apple, reports from Japan's Nikkei maintained on Thursday. Similar to a Toshiba plant mentioned by the same business paper, the Sharp plant would focus on small and mid-size LCDs but focus primarily on serving the iPhone. Apple would even take on most of the cost of establishing the factory, the paper claimed.

Apple, Microsoft, others acquire Novell patents for $450 million
Software company Novell recently had to reorganize after an acquisition by Attachmate, and as a result, a number of patents held by the company went up the air for grabs. Apple has decided to team with Microsoft, and picked up the patents along with a few other partners for $450 million. It's not quite known what will happen with these, but the company formed by the partnership, CPTN Holdings LLC, now owns 882 patents originally filed by Novell. Filing papers show that this company was "a consortium organized by Microsoft," so presumably the patents will simply be held by the company to protect certain technologies if necessary, or Microsoft and its partners (including Apple) will split them up according to some agreement.

Apple patents CoverFlow-like spiral interface
Patently Apple has unearthed a new patent that shows off a CoverFlow-like interface for browsing icons or album covers, only instead of CoverFlow's linear layout, this one organizes content in a spiral. We've seen rotating menus in Apple's patents before, but this looks more involved. It's described as a "receding spiral in a virtual 3D space," and you would use your finger (so probably in an iOS interface) to spin the spiral around and browse through whatever you were looking for. Windows Phone 7 outnumbered 100:1 in web traffic
Windows Phone 7 has yet to garner enough web traffic to be meaningful compared to its rivals, Chitika said today. While overall on the increase, the platform so far has never passed 0.45 percent of requests on Chitika's ad network. Android outnumbers it by a ratio of 100 to one at about 40 percent.

Opera 11 for Mac is finally available with all sorts of cool features for you to play with, like "tab stacking," mouse gesture support and extensions. Here's an initial run-down of the major features available in Opera 11 for Mac.
Tab stacking is pretty cool. I'm "one of those" people who typically has a huge number of tabs open at once. Opera reinforces my bad habit by allowing me to drag tabs on top of one another, creating a pop-up window of all the tabs in a stack. Each window displays a thumbnail of its pages' contents, and a click brings it forward.

Apple reportedly adds touch screen suppliers for iPad 2
To add to our growing stockpile of iPad 2 rumors, DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has added two new touch screen suppliers,
Chimei Innolux and Cando, with those shipments to begin in January or February. The article says that expected orders of the iPad 2 will be more than 6 million per month. This follows up the rumor that backlighting units were shipped to Chimei Innolux and LG Display.

Super Talent shows USB 3.0 Storage POD
Flash memory device maker Super Talent this week introduced a USB 3.0 portable drive, the Storage POD. It has a data capacity of 500GB and has the headroom with the new port to run up to 10 times faster in burst speeds. Motorola 'Stadia' trademark application hints at device with gaming / fitness features
It's not exactly a ton to go on, but a trademark application recently filed by Motorola for the word "Stadia" has at least opened up a few interesting possibilities. While the (as yet nonexistent) device in question is seemingly phone-related given the goods and services Motorola is hoping to have covered, the application also specifically mentions a "game device in the nature of handheld units for playing electronic games for use with external display screen or monitor," along with a number of fitness-related functions like heart rate, speed, and calorie monitoring. Skyfire submits iPad browser to App Store
Skyfire has submitted the iPad version of its iOS browser for approval by Apple, the company says. The new app should mostly provide a larger viewing area for both Flash videos and webpages. Most of the improvements are targeted at the iPhone app; the title now supports Retina Display resolutions, and should load as much as six times faster than before. Patent battle continues between Nokia and Apple with 13 more disputed patents
The fun doesn't stop in the ongoing Nokia/Apple patent dispute; the Finnish cellphone manufacturer has now filed claims in three European countries alleging Apple infringement on 13 additional patents, beyond the 24 patents already covered in the existing US and International Trade Commission filings.

International launch of Google TV cast into doubt
The international release of Google TV has been thrown into uncertainty today as remarks from those involved have backed away from a release date. Following hints from Logitech back in May that it might have a British release in January, both Logitech and Google have since told the Inquirer they have no concrete information as to when it would launch in the UK. Sony hadn't commented whether it would port its Internet TV and Blu-ray player models over.

Apple files for patents on new Cover Flow, fiber concepts
Two notable patent applications by Apple have been published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The first, User Interface for Media Playback, relates to the Cover Flow interface used in iTunes as well as iPods and iPhones. The filing is in fact critical of the technology's current implementation, commenting that because of the size of icons, it's only possible to see "about one or two files before and after the selected file."

JVC LSI tech brings high-speed, 3D, 4K recordings
JVC this week announced it will soon introduce the first LSI chip technology in its consumer camcorders. The 40nm chip will bring with it high-speed processing of HD video, the ability to shoot in HD in 3D, and high-resolution 4K images that are nearly four times higher than 1080p images. Neue MacBook Pro und iMacs bis Mitte nächsten Jahres

DigiTimes prescht schon mal mit Computersegen Neuvorstellungsgerüchten für Apple vor und verspricht uns für 2011 im ersten Halbjahr gleich vier neue MacBook Pros an. Group getting Novell patents includes Apple, Microsoft
The acquirer of 882 Novell patents as part of Attachmate's buyout of Novell includes Apple, EMC, Microsoft and Oracle, Germany's antitrust regulator Bundeskartellamt revealed in a notice for the deal. While created by Microsoft, the organization includes some of its competitors and suggests the buy wasn't intended solely or primarily for Microsoft's attempt to discourage Linux use through patent lawsuits. Firemint releases free, ad-supported Flight Control to App Store
Firemint confirmed today that it is launching a free, ad-supported version of its popular Flight Control game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app has received the rubber stamp of approval from Apple and should appear in the App store in the upcoming days. The free version has the same gameplay as the paid version but limits several salient features. Multiple maps are not available in the free version, but you can play on the original map without any time or score limits. Multiplayer, both local and online, are missing from the free version as well.

iPods, MacBook Air continuing to see high demand
Apple is continuing to see "spot shortages" of iPods and limited supply of the MacBook Air, even following Black Friday, says Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu. Police hunt down stolen iPhone in chopper
Police in Australia take iPhone theft seriously; so seriously, they will not hesitate to employ the use of a helicopter to nab a thief who has made off with one of Apple's prized mobile devices. The story begins in a hospital in Heidelberg, Australia where an iPhone was stolen from an unsuspecting woman. The woman's iPhone presumably had the now infamous Find My iPhone app installed and the police used the app to track and locate the iPhone in the neighboring suburb of Greensborough.

HTC bestätigt Tablets und LTE Smartphones für nächstes Jahr

Peter Chou hat es in einem Interview zum Mobile World Congress bestätigt. Es wird Tablets geben von HTC. "Die Konsumenten mögen Windows oder Android haben wollen, kleine oder große Bildschirme, Keyboards oder Tablets. HTC wird den Konsumenten entscheiden lassen". Details sind allerdings mehr als vage. Das glaubhafteste Gerücht aber spricht von Gingerbread-Tablet mit NVIDIA Tegra 2. Windows 7 wird nach dieser Ansage natürlich auch kommen müssen. Das gestern Abend veröffentlichte Update für iTunes auf Version 10.1.1 brauchte neben zahlreichen Bugfixes auch zumindest einen großen Update-Bug mit. Bei manchen Usern schien das Update so fleissig beim Löcherstopfen gewesen zu sein, dass iTunes nach dem Update nicht mehr gestartet werden konnte. Der Junge hat definitiv kein Talent für Langstrecke. Junge? Vielleicht wegen der Schuhe, ansonsten hat dieses Wesen nun wirklich nicht viel Menschliches an sich. Obwohl es technisch gesehen genau darum geht, denn wie ihr im Video nach dem Break sehen könnt, funktionierten die frühen Prototypen des Robo-Athleten weniger "menschlich" und damit weniger gut. Obwohl das arme Ding ja nach wie vor nicht sehr weit kommt, aber die paar Schritte vor dem Sturz meistert es mit Stil. Es ist doch gleich viel interessanter, wenn sich ein Roboter benimmt wie wir ohne dabei auch so aussehen zu wollen

Julian Assange auf Kaution frei

Best Buy allegedly drops Droid phones in Verizon spat
Best Buy was reported today as having pulled both the Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro in what might be a dispute with Verizon. Several Best Buy workers were told the phones would no longer be sold but have conflicting explanations. Some blamed fears over the 'exploded' Droid 2, but others said there was a pricing dispute between Best Buy and Verizon, BGR heard.

We've been anticipating the Mac App Store's arrival and now there's an official date. Apple will open the Mac App Store on January 6, 2011. The store will be available in 90 countries and feature games, productivity apps and a whole lot more. Speaking through a press release, Steve Jobs said, "The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can't wait to get started on January 6."

Nokia sues Apple again in Germany, Netherlands, UK
Nokia on Thursday refused to back down in its patent dispute with Apple and sued the American company in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The Dusseldorf, Hague and London complaints accuse Apple of violating 13 extra patents beyond the 24 already leveraged against Apple in the US. Unlike past complaints, Nokia this time was counting on the age of its patents to avoid prior art and covered basic touch interfaces, app stores, messaging and signalling technology that in some cases have existed for years.

Nokia ups the ante on Apple, adds 13 more patents to the 24 already asserted
We told you that this would likely go on forever. Nokia just announced that the company has filed claims in the UK, Germany, and The Netherlands alleging that Apple's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad are infringing upon Nokia's patents. This adds 13 more patents to the 24 already asserted in the ITC and US federal claims. Here's a particularly snippy remark made Paul Melin, vice president, Intellectual Property at Nokia:
"The Nokia inventions protected by these patents include several which enable compelling user experiences. For example, using a wiping gesture on a touch screen to navigate content, or enabling access to constantly changing services with an on-device app store, both filed more than ten years before the launch of the iPhone."

Hitachi today claimed a minor record by shipping the TravelStar Z5K500. The 2.5-inch, 5,400RPM disk is the first drive 7mm thick to reach 500GB, bumping up from the earlier 320GB peak. BMW uses bright lights, subliminal messages to sell motorcycles (video)
The BMW S1000R is fast enough and sexy enough (other than that one lazy eye) to sell itself, and you'd think a commercial showing World Superbike rider Ruben Xaus flogging one around the track would be quite enough to get people inclined to buy the things. Not enough for BMW. The company used the optical illusion of afterimage to temporarily imprint "BMW" onto the retinas of theater-goers. Intels Marktanteil bleibt konstant bei 80 Prozent
Im letzten Quartal blieben die Marktanteile von Intel und AMD nahezu konstant. Im Bereich Mikroprozessoren hält Intel 80,1 Prozent, AMD 11,3 Prozent. Auf alle anderen Hersteller entfallen 8,6 Prozent. Für Intel bedeutet das ein Minus, für AMD ein Plus von jeweils 0,2 Prozentpunkten im Vergleich zum zweiten Quartal des Jahres. Rumor: New iMacs and MacBook Pros in the first half of 2011
This rumor is like saying it will rain somewhere in the world during the first half of 2011, but DigiTimes reports that Apple will launch new MacBook Pros and iMacs in the first half of next year. The iMac was last updated in July 2010, and the MacBook Pros last received an update way back in April 2010, so updates to both those lines in the next six months shouldn't come as a shock to anyone.
As for details, DigiTimes doesn't have many except there will be "at least four upgraded MacBook Pros," and the new iMacs will feature "a new panel size and a price point for the mainstream market." Personally, I'm hoping Apple drops the optical drive from at least

USAF to receive the last of its Predator drones in early 2011
While the controversial (and deadly) use of combat drones certainly shows no signs of abatement, the Air Force has announced that a recent purchase of 268 Predators will be its last. Apple releases LED Cinema Display firmware update
Apple has released a firmware update for the 27-inch LED Cinema Display. The 957 KB download "addresses intermittent audio issues some users have experienced while using the 27-inch LED Cinema Display." To install the update you must have Mac OS X 10.6.4 or later, plus the confusingly similarly-named LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0 (released in September). Alternatively, an installation of Mac OS X 10.6.5 will do, as the previous display update was bundled with the 10.6.5 updater.

Iconic Stand is seemingly still a concept, but an interesting one for sure. Korean-designed iPhone stands, they're made of birch and have a serious natural feel to them. The makers have seen fit to design the stands with various famous logos for properties such as Twitter, Facebook, and Blogger built right into them. Apple is planning refreshes of the iMac and MacBook Pro for the first half of 2011 that should include redesigns, part suppliers said Wednesday night. The iMac will reportedly get a "new panel size" and a "mainstream," presumably lower price to reach more users. Countdown for iOS gives a highly customizable view of deadlines
I've used a countdown widget in OS X for ages, but recently wanted a program which could keep track of several events to count down to, and something specifically for my iPad, not just for my Mac.
I found a universal app simply called Countdown, and figured that for $1 I'd give it a try. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for, plus a little more.

Apple updates LED Cinema Display firmware
Today Apple issued a firmware update for the 27-inch LED Cinema Display (the model introduced on July 27th) which addresses intermittent audio dropouts some users have experienced while using the display, which had been previously addressed in a technote on Apple's support site. Under certain cirumstances, audio would cut out, and require unplugging the display or restarting the computer. This is not the same update as the LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0, issued this past September.

Android Dreamcast emulator nullDCe gets early video preview, still a work in progress
Never underestimate the power of Dreamcast to live on long past its intended expiration date (which, if you ask Sega, would have been around September 2007). The final flagship console from the Haus of Sonic is survived by a multitude of emulators propagating across a multitude of platforms and well, here's another. Drk||Raziel has posted some videos showcasing the work in progress of nullDCe for Android (on what we make out to be a AT&T Samsung Captivate). The footage ranges from buggy (Soul Calibur) to pretty smooth (Crazy Taxi), but again, no one's calling this a finished product. See it for yourself after the break.

iPhone 101: Save extensions in Contacts
Having friends with an office job in the typical corporate environment often times means having to dial a desk phone with an extension. As Lifehacker points out, this usually results in having to memorize a contact's direct extension for use after dialing the office's main line.
The difficulty comes from the fact that simply dialing someone's extension immediately after the main line number will not work. The internal phone system of the company you are calling will not recognize the extension has been dialed until there is a connection between the caller and the system.

iPhone app processes images for colorblind users
Security researcher Dan Kaminsky has introduced a mobile app that processes images for users who suffer from red-green colorblindness. The utility, titled DanKam and available for iOS and Android, attempts to overcome the condition by processing images through several color-shifting schemes. Images can be taken in real-time from the device's camera.

Sifteo Cubits launching next year; still really cute
We've been tracking the MIT-originated Siftables so far with grudgingly bemused expressions on our cynical, internet-hardened faces. Now we find out they're called Sifteo Cubits, and they've got a slated release for the first quarter of next year. Sure, sure, we can keep it together. But then we saw this adorable press shot, and the callouses just fell right off our hardened blogger hearts. Evernote for Mac v2 launches, adds shared notebooks
Evernote, an cloud-based document-store-and-sync system, has upgraded its Mac application to v2, bringing the ability to share notebooks either publicly (even to non-Evernote users) or to groups and individuals. Users can link public notebooks to their account so that it is automatically updated, and Evernote Premium members can allow others editing privileges on the notebook in question, making collaborative work easy.

TechCrunch reports that payment processor Visa has released an iPhone app in the US* that gives shoppers access to some 50 merchants. Visa's new app comes with two services you can use, Offers and Locator.
Offers: Receive merchant discounts and special offers directly on your iPhone. The offers are stored on your iPhone and can be redeemed at physical retail locations, online, or by telephone. You can select your preferences for the types of offers that are sent to your iPhone.

FCC to auction off deadbeat bidders' 700MHz spectrum on July 19th, 2011
If there's one thing we've learned from our stratospheric rise in smartphone adoption over the past several years (with no end in sight), it's that we can never have enough spectrum to run data services for them -- just ask the chairman of the FCC, the president of the CTIA, or pretty much anyone who's ever tried to load Engadget on an iPhone in Times Square. BlackBerry desktop software for Mac adds Wi-Fi music sync
RIM has released a major update to its BlackBerry desktop software for Macs. In a bid to generate some interest from upgrading Sierra Club members, Seagate has just introduced the Barracuda Green, described as the world's highest performance eco-friendly desktop hard drive. US spending as much time on phone as all paper news combined
Americans are spending as much time on their phones as they do on all forms of reading, eMarketer discovered in a study tonight. Mobile use each day has jumped from 39 minutes every day just a year ago to 50 minutes a day as of December. Much of that time was taken away from reading, with newspapers now read for just 30 minutes on average and magazines for 20 minutes.

Band streams concert live via iOS app
A band named Everything, Everything is streaming a concert live today from London, and they're sharing that content on the App Store. NME says that the Manchester band has released a free app for iOS that will not only stream the show live, but will eventually have an archive of the show available, along with information about the band and backstage pre- and post-show access.

iPhone up to fifth place in whole Japanese phone market
The iPhone is now the fifth best-selling phone brand in the entire Japanese market, IDC Japan found on Wednesday. Owed mostly to the iPhone 4 launch and shipping 1.06 million phones, Apple climbed from seventh place in the first half of the year to 12.2 percent between July and September. It had never been above 10 percent in the past, the study said.
