Slingplayer Mobile for iPhone updated with better quality video and a new guide
SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone and iPod touch has been updated to version 2.0. The guide is improved, matching the iPad version, and video streaming quality is improved if you have a Slingbox SOLO or Pro-HD model.
Happily, older Slingboxes will still work with this update, but you won't get the highest level of picture quality. The update is free if you already bought the stratospherically priced (US $29.99) app previously. To get customers on the newer hardware, the Sling people are offering upgrades of $50.00 off on a Slingbox PRO-HD or SOLO or $150.00 off of a refurbished PRO-HD.

Advent Vega's Flash Player yanked due to missing Adobe certification
The Advent Vega was never the most polished Android tablet in the world -- after all, we had to rely on a custom ROM just to get native Android Market access -- but a reasonable price tag and NVIDIA's Tegra 2 has still made it hard to resist. Second-generation AppleTV gets minor update
Apple this afternoon released a firmware update for the current-model (black) Apple TV, keeping the same iOS version number (4.2.1, originally released on November 22nd) but bumping the build number from 8C148 to 8C154. No list or tech note detailing changes or bug fixes has yet been made available. The update will appear automatically for Apple TV owners.

Ubuntu meets Google Cr-48 laptop, keeps Chrome along for the ride
Inevitable? Perhaps. But there's still nothing like seeing Linux running on a device for the first time -- especially when it involves such a seemingly hacker-friendly device as the Google Cr-48 laptop. Gmail pioneer: Chrome OS will die or join Android
Gmail's core developer Paul Buchheit today said in a prediction that he expected Chrome OS to die in 2011. The former Google employee and FriendFeed creator expected that it would either be ended outright or else "merged" with Android. In a defense on FriendFeed, he noted that there was no point to Chrome OS and argued that even the Cr-48 netbook was a mistake.

Apple updates iOS 4.2.1 for Apple TV
We've gotten a few reports that Apple has released a minor build update for the new Apple TV. Users aren't reporting any obvious new features or specific performance upgrades with the brand new 4.2.1 update, so it's likely that this latest Apple TV update is just for bug fixes. Not all users are seeing the update quite yet, but it should propagate to everybody before long.
MacRumors notes that the Apple TV iOS 4.2.1 update is labeled Build 8C154. The previous Apple TV iOS 4.2 was Build 8C150. If you Apple TV owners see any differences, let us know in the comments.

Sixth Circuit rules that the government needs a warrant to search your email
Score another baby step for digital democracy: the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that the government must have a search warrant before it can obtain email from your provider. Specifically, the court held in U.S. v Warshak that "it would defy common sense to afford emails lesser Fourth Amendment protection" than traditional communications like phone calls and postal mail. Yes, you'd think that would be obvious, but the specific question had never actually been raised at the appellate level before, so the decision is critically important -- it's likely that other courts will take their cue from the Sixth Circuit when faced with similar issues. As the EFF points out, however, there are several legal exceptions to the warrant requirement in the Stored Communication Act that the organization is still fighting to have amended, but hey -- we'll take ever

Unreal Development Kit for iOS to launch on Thursday
The iOS version of Epic's Unreal Development Kit will become available on Thursday, says the Wall Street Journal. The kit is used to produce games based on the Unreal engine, and includes components for the likes of audio, rendering and physics, as well as editing tools. Court rules e-mail protected by Fourth Amendment
A US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday ruled that e-mail was legally protected by the Fourth Amendment. It determined in a 3-0 vote that e-mail was similar to traditional communication and thus that the government still needed a search warrant to intercept and read e-mail. Users still had a reasonable expectation of privacy online, the court said.

3 UK to uncap its 3G Internet access

Novatel MiFi 4082 with WiMAX tips up at FCC

Apple could sell record-breaking 4.3 million Macs this holiday
Sometime in January Apple will hold their FY2011 Q1 earnings call and you will be sure to hear these words: "The quarter that just ended was the best quarter in Apple's history." It's something many of us have gotten used to hearing as Apple has said it (or a derivative of it, adding "non-holiday" between "best" and "quarter") every quarter for at least the last seven years.
That familiar catchphrase shows no sign of stopping as NPD says Apple is on track to sell between 4.1 million and 4.3 million Macs in the December quarter. As AllThingsD points out, Apple's U.S. Mac sales are up 20 percent year-over-year for the first two months of the current quarter. Google Voice app now supports iPad and iPod touch, brings Click2Call
So, how exactly does a voice app work on devices without any cellular ties? Glad you asked! Google has just updated the iOS Google Voice app to include support for the iPod touch and iPad, but neither of them can make cellular calls directly. Instead, you can use the app to initiate GVoice calls with a nearby phone. The process is known as Click2Call -- users simply click any 'Call' button within the app and then choose which of their phones they want to ring. Nook Color to get Android 2.2 in January, turn iPad rival
Barnes & Noble should turn the Nook Color into a full tablet in January, a spokesperson said last week. The device will switch from 2.1 today and give many regular Android device features, including the home screen, Android Market access and multi-touch in the web browser. AirPlayer 0.01 weckt Hoffnung auf den Mac als AirPlay-Video-Empfänger (Video)

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone gets high quality streams
Sling today updated the SlingPlayer Mobile app for the iPhone and iPod touch to version 2.0 ($30, App Store). The revamp brings with it many improvements, some carried over from the recently launched iPad version, such as the new programming guide, but most notably include the ability to stream high quality video from their Slingbox Solo or Slingbox Pro-HD devices. AirPlay is a very, very cool technology. Unfortunately, if you don't own an Apple TV 2 or other capable receiving device, it's not going to do you much good. Novatel's MiFi 4082 is the WiMAX-capable hotspot the Overdrive has been dreading
Sprint's Overdrive from Sierra Wireless has been handling the WiMAX mobile hotspot duties on Sprint for most of this year, but it's been walking that road alone -- Novatel, which took the mobile hotspot concept mainstream with its venerable MiFi line -- has been absent from the 4G race so far, but it looks like that's about to change. Millenial Media: Apple still top manufacturer, devs heading to Android in 2011
Millenial Media has released its monthly report about mobile advertising, and while things haven't changed too much from the last time they released this kind of data, the usual trends are still in place. Apple is the biggest mobile device manufacturer around, representing 25% of mobile impressions across its iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad platforms. Flipboard rumored to launch web app
One of the more awe-inspiring iPad apps of 2010 was Flipboard. The free app is a beautiful way to read RSS feeds, see and respond to updates from friends on Twitter and Facebook and more, displayed in a format that looks more like a well-designed magazine than a reader app. It's so good that Apple named it the iPad App of the Year.
Now The Next Web is reporting that Flipboard may be coming to a much larger audience as a web app. The company has reportedly posted a job opening for a "Designer - Web Developer" for the purpose of designing a way to read content online. This move makes sense for Flipboard, particularly if they plan on offering the app in Google Chrome's Web Store

Google Voice app gains iPad, iPod touch support
The Google Voice app for iOS has been updated with iPad and iPod touch support, the company says. Although users are still unable to make cellular calls, various other features work, such as the ability to send free text messages. Imagination buys Caustic, may bring raytracing to iPhone
Imagination Technologies this morning said it had bought Caustic Graphics in what could be a major boost to the graphics on future iPhones and Android devices. The $27 million deal gives Imagination access to real-time raytracing technology and will improve the performance of PowerVR mobile graphics. Business Insider names iPad "Biggest Tech Winner" of 2010
It's December, and that means "Best Of" lists. Business Insider has published their "Biggest Tech Winners of 2010," and the "magical" iPad is sitting atop the heap, while the iPhone 4 is listed at number ten.
What's interesting is the number of other winners that wouldn't exist without the iOS. Flipboard is listed at number 15, Kleiner Perkins' iFund is number 8 and that bird game is number 3. Amazon MP3 app hits BlackBerry phones
It may not quite be enough to bring non-BlackBerry users into the fold, but RIM has finally scored one long awaited coup to keep its current users happy -- it's just announced that the Amazon MP3 application is now available for download from the BlackBerry App World. Apple releases "iTunes 12 Days of Christmas" app in UK
Apple has released an "iTunes 12 Days of Christmas" iOS app and companion site in the UK, all meant to treat their customers to seasonal goodies. Between December 26 and January 6, Apple will give away free apps, songs, books, movies and episodes of TV shows, one per day, via the app and the website. The app can be configured to send a push notification when each giveaway is ready, for those who just can't wait.
The app isn't available in the U.S. App Store, so you'll need a UK account to download it here.

Google Voice app update supports iPad, iPod touch
The Google Voice app for iPhone was updated today with support for the iPad and iPod touch. According to the official Google Voice blog, the update will let your iPod touch or iPad send and receive messages and enjoy other features of the service, except making calls.
However, you can use your iPad or iPod touch running Google Voice to initiate a call on your iPhone with something called Click2Call. The way it works is simple. Just select the number you'd like to call and then tap the phone you'd like to use. That phone will ring and when you pick up, Google Voice will complete the call. US Army may issue Android, iPhone to troops
The US Army's Capabilities Integration Center's head Lt. Gen. Michael Vane today said the military is planning to issue smartphones to combat soldiers that could improve their abilities to work out in the field. The Army at a minimum will have Common Access Card readers like those for notebooks on the iPhone in January and on Android in April, letting either check their e-mail and calendars with security intact. Mac 101: Securing your passwords after the Gawker breach
Thanks to questionable security practices at Gawker Media (publishing parent of many high-profile websites including Gizmodo and Lifehacker), a number of people are busy scrambling to change their passwords on a lot of different sites today. Gawker stored encrypted passwords on its servers instead of password hashes (and stored those passwords using the deprecated DES standard), so as a result of some weekend hacking, a lot of email addresses and passwords were stolen.

Apple, Toshiba to build $1.1B Retina Display factory
Toshiba is rumored to be building a factory to manufacture high-resolution LCD displays for Apple, according to a report in the Nikkei Business Daily. The Japanese company may spend 100 billion yen ($1.9 billion USD as of this writing) to build the factory which is expected to be ready for production in the second half of 2011. With this new plant, Toshiba will be able to double its current LCD production level, which now hovers around 8.55 million units per month. Apple is reportedly investing an unknown sum into the construction of this plant and will use it to produce retina displays for future iPhone models. This a switch for Apple as current iPhone models use a retina display manufactured by LG.

Best Buy sees steep drop in TVs offset by phones, iPad
Best Buy today reported a drop in profit for its fall quarter owed to TVs but countered by smartphones and the iPad. It still made $217 million in net income but saw its core home electronics business shed 10.6 percent of its revenue as it saw a low double-digit drop in TVs as well as matching home theaters and movies. However, it saw a comparable increase in smartphones as well as a single-digit boost to notebooks, which it credited primarily to "strength in tablet computers."

BMO up, Morgan Stanley down on Apple
BMO Capital's Keith Bachman has raised his price target for Apple stock from $330 to $355, based largely on increased iPhone predictions. The analyst now suggests that Apple will sell 16.5 million iPhones in the current quarter, whereas a previous estimate called for 15 million. Looking forward he suggests that Apple will sell 60 million iPhones in FY 2011, and 76 million in FY 2012.

Xserve no longer offers SSD option

Japanese publishers accuse Apple of breaking copyright
A consortium of Japanese book publishers are demanding that Apple stop selling pirated novels through the App Store, says Agence France-Presse. Investigative reporter Joshua Kors recently switched to the Mac then switched right back. It turns out that he and his iMac weren't a good fit for one another. That's potentially understandable; switching to the Mac is easier for some people than for others. If a switcher doesn't have anyone there to walk him through the process, he might get so frustrated by the little differences between Windows and Mac OS X that he may wonder why he bothered switching at all.

Nokia delays E7 slider into 'early 2011'
Oh dear. Like the N8 before it, Nokia just confirmed to us that the Symbian-powered E7 slider will be delayed. The official word has it launching in early 2011, not December 2010. We've been told that Nokia's holding up production due to a "minor durability issue" discovered in the E7 hardware. We can't blame Nokia for wanting to ensure the best possible user experience -- it's just a shame that it will require the holiday shopping season to sort it out.

Kaleidescape bringt Video-Server für 100 Blu-ray-Discs, Kopierschutz genau so tough wie das Design

Der Video-Server von Kaleidescape kann Blu-ray-Discs rippen und die Videos an Player ins lokale Netzwerk streamen, aber natürlich nicht so, wie wir uns das vorstellen: Das Teil funktioniert nur in Kombination mit bestimmten, vorher festgelegten Playern und ein Film steht auch nur solange zur Verfügung, wie die Blu-ray-Discs im Kasten steckt. Und dieses restriktive System funktioniert auch nur mit Blu-ray-Disc-Playern von Kaleidescape (M300 oder M500), von denen einer ab 2.500 Dollar zu haben ist, während der Server-Kasten mit 1.500 Dollar zu Buche schlägt. Schaut aber gut aus, die Kiste. Trotzdem wohl ein Fall von schade aber toll.

NPD: Computer prices on the rise, emphasis on high end PCs
Research firm NDP says that consumers are now paying more for PCs, reversing a downward trend over the past few years according to a report. Apple's looking for a Verizon iPad system engineer
In yet more news of increasing links between Apple and Verizon, a job posting for a Verizon iPad system engineer has recently surfaced. Although the "engineer" title might make it sound like Apple's looking for someone to direct, say, putting a CDMA or LTE chipset into the iPad, the job description tells a different story. Apple wants someone who "will be responsible for developing carrier relationships within the carrier technical teams" and "play a critical role in helping key corporate accounts develop confidence in the Apple solution." It seems to be more sales-oriented than engineering, but it's also a sure sign that Apple and Verizon's iPad relationship may soon go beyond merely selling the existing

HP updates latest LaserJet printers, adds mobile printing
Hewlett-Packard has sent out a new firmware update on six of its business LaserJet models, enabling mobile print and additional built-in print options, and promises more models will be supported as well. The HP ePrint compatible printers can now have print jobs sent to them by any email-capable device. Additionally the firmware update will add additional printing options, called "business apps" by HP, that users can interact with directly on internet-connected printer models with no computer required.

Toshiba dementiert Bau einer Fabrik für Apple-Panele
Für kurze Zeit kursierte ein Bericht, wonach Toshiba zusammen mit Apple mehr als eine Milliarde Dollar in eine neue Fertigungsanlage investiert, die in erster Linie LCD-Panele für Apple herstellen soll. And yet the pigs go marching on. Rovio's Angry Birds is just over a year old now, and in that time it's racked up 50 million in downloads, with 10 million of those from Android. I've been a trivia buff forever, and it seems like my brain has an endless capacity for relatively useless information while it has difficulty remembering important things -- like my name, for instance. With over 3,500,000 articles in the English version of Wikipedia, there's plenty of fodder for gathering information, whether it's real knowledge or just fun trivia.

11-inch MacBook Air review: Tiny awesomeness
Those TUAW readers who watched TUAW TV Live last Wednesday afternoon were treated to a live unboxing last week when an 11-inch MacBook Air arrived at my office. The Air was a replacement for a MacBook that I sold to a client, and since I had previously owned (and loved) one of the original MacBook Airs, I decided to go for the 11-inch model.
To be honest, I had a bit of cognitive dissonance after I ordered the little laptop, but that's gone now since I gave it a real workout last Friday and Saturday at the 360MacDev conference.

Dell 'Fractal' workstation designs revealed
Look, we don't normally get too stoked over workstations, they remind us too much of "work." Also, "stations." Still, a chance to see some unreleased workstations from Dell? That actually look pretty sweet? Sure, we'll go in on that. A tipster found these "Fractal design language" renders just floating helplessly around the internet and forwarded them over. Android's weak sales drive Verizon toward Apple's iPhone
An analysis of Verizon Wireless smartphone sales over the past year indicates why the carrier is suddenly demonstrating interest in Apple's iPad and iPhone: Android isn't working out as well as once hoped, with AT&T now selling 2.5 times as many iPhones as Verizon is Android models.

iPad leads gadget search queries in Google's 2010 Zeitgeist report
Surrounded by the likes of singer Justin Bieber, video chat site Chatroulette, and rapper Nicki Minaj, the iPad was was among the top Google search engine queries for 2010 according to the annual Google Zeitgeist report. The report is an indicator about what Google users were searching for throughout the year, and coming in second place among the "Fastest Rising" terms of the year and first for "Fastest Rising in Consumer Electronics," the iPad was definitely on everyone's mind.

Comcast 'Xcalibur' test program brings web video, unified search to cable boxes
There's not a lot of details available yet, but according to the Wall Street Journal, Comcast has begun testing features that rival what Google TV and TiVo are doing in the living room by letting cable set-top boxes access streaming video from the internet. Known to participants in Augusta, Georgia as Spectrum and within the company as Xcalibur it combines a DVR with unified search across cable VOD and the internet, plus social media tie-ins, but does not include a full web browser. PhotoStyler v5 released, adds batch processing
Corner-A has updated its photo-manipulation app, PhotoStyler/, to v5, bringing a new engine for better stability and performance that runs on 10.6 or later (a Leopard-compatible v4.6 is still available). Microsoft to demo new slate PCs, Windows 8 tablet functionality at CES?
The CES 2010 Ballmernote has become something of a black mark for Microsoft -- the company's delivered almost nothing in the year after Steve demoed the HP Slate and talked about future Windows 7 Slate PCs -- but as one would assume, Redmond's expected to pick up right where it left off in just a few weeks at CES 2011. iOS games: Monopoly, Need for Speed, Snood come to iPad
EA Games has released a trio of classic and new titles specifically designed for the iPad, starting with the venerable board game Monopoly, the computer classic Snood, and the fast-paced action game Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. All three feature enhanced graphics and Wi-Fi network play; Monopoly and Need for Speed can also use local Bluetooth connections, while Snood players can challenge each other from afar via the internet.

Analyst report: Why Verizon wants to sell the iPhone
Let's say straight out, this is just the opinion of one analyst, and the opinion is based on sales data assumptions that might or might not be accurate. Still, it's an interesting report, and it might help explain why Verizon, which originally rejected the iPhone, wants it back.

Gmail for Android and iPhone brings more desktop features
Google has introduced an updated version of its mobile Gmail utility for iPhones or Android-based smartphones. The mobile variant now brings a feature set closer to the desktop version, allowing users to take advantage of enhancements to features such as search, starring, labels and threaded conversation. The update also brings offline support, and smart links for Google Maps, YouTube and Google Docs content.

Microsoft to try iPad rival again with Dell, Samsung at CES
Microsoft will try to force itself back into the tablet market again in 2011 with a repeat of its HP Slate demo at CES this year, a new leak detailed today. CEO Steve Ballmer will once more demonstrate examples of Windows 7 tablets and is expected to highlight both an unnamed Dell example and the Samsung Gloria. The Samsung device depends on a slide-out QWERTY keyboard in landscape but uses an on-screen keyboard in portrait mode, the New York Times heard.

Shocker! Internet use now ties TV in time spent avoiding outdoor activity
Despite a huge dropoff in cable subscribers this year, Forrester Research's 40,000-strong survey pegs consumer TV consumption at about 13 hours weekly, same as it ever was. Toshiba and Apple working together on a display manufacturing plant
Toshiba and Apple are reportedly working together on a brand new manufacturing plant in Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture, specifically to build "low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels," to be used in Apple's iPhones. Toshiba will spend about $1.9 billion on the project, which is scheduled to start building in a month or so, and be done in time to start production by the end of next year. Toshiba already makes some 8.55 million units in its current manufacturing plant, but that production is supposed to double with this new facility.

NPD: PC sales down in November but Apple, Lenovo, Toshiba up
Apple, Lenovo and Toshiba are some of the few computer builders to see their sales go up in a harsh November, the NPD Group said Monday. PC sales in the US were down six percent overall last month, but Apple grew 19 percent, Toshiba 22 percent and Lenovo 69 percent compared to a month earlier. Dell and HP by contrast suffered during the period, as Dell grew just five percent while HP's results plummeted 15 percent.

Afghanistan moves ahead with plans for national electronic ID cards
It doesn't appear to involve the biometric IDs that were first proposed by NATO, but the Afghanistan government has just announced plans to issue electronic ID cards to everyone in the country -- an undertaking that it hopes will be complete in five years. That admittedly difficult effort got off to an official start today with the signing of a $101.5 million contract with Afghan company Grand Technology Resources, which will apparently be responsible for producing the wallet-sized cards themselves. Google buys Zetawire to get edge in NFC payments over rivals
Google today was discovered as having bought previously low-profile firm Zetawire to improve its support for near-field communications (NFC) in Android phones like the Nexus S. The Toronto-based company had barely begun but had a US patent for an end-to-end way to pay for goods in person with a mobile device like a smartphone. MacBrackets offers security option for older MacBook Airs
A team of German Mac enthusiasts have come up with an artful, elegant solution to the problem of (pre-2010) MacBook Air (MBA) security called the MacBracket. The MBA is one of the very few models of laptop made since 2000 that does not come with a Kensington security slot, making it difficult to secure the device to a desk as most public or educational institutions would want to do. BlueSLR allows iPhone users to remotely control DSLR cameras
If you happen to own both a Nikon digital SLR camera and an iPhone and have been looking for a way that the two could work together, you may now be in luck. blueSLR, which combines a Bluetooth accessory (dongle) that plugs into your SLR and an app you run on your iPhone (3G and up), iPod Touch (2nd generation or later) or iPad, enables you to remotely control your camera's shutter from up to 300 feet away.
