Venue Pro makes brief appearance on Dell's website: $150 on-contract, December 14th launch?
There's no sign left of it now, but it looks like none other than the Venue Pro made a brief appearance on Dell's website earlier today, complete with a few key details about the device. Namely, that it will apparently run $150 on a two-year contract or $500 off-contract (which is a bit different than the asking price was at Microsoft stores), and that it will start shipping on December 14th. Of course, it's entirely possible that Dell pulled the page in order to make some changes to those details -- and considering the Venue Pro launch

Motorola split wraps up on January 4th
Just in time for CES, eh? We knew it was happening at some point in January, and Motorola has just announced that it'll formally be split into two companies as of January 4th, 2011. Actually, that's not technically accurate: Motorola Mobility -- the phone guys -- will be spun off into their own entity, while the parent company will change its name from Motorola to Motorola Solutions, responsible for the company's other businesses including infrastructure and set-top boxes. MySpace kicks out new mobile site for Android, iPhone
Social networking site MySpace on Tuesday announced it has launched a new site optimized for mobile devices with modern WebKit browsers. This includes iOS devices, Android, Palm and modern Symbian^3 and BlackBerry 6 devices from Nokia and RIM, respectively. The site features music and celebrity news and offers video content, but there is no music streaming.

Bell Mobility launches Netgear Turbo Hub, sends juicy HSPA+ to your WiFi and Ethernet gear
Canada's Bell appears to be taking advantage of Netgear's partnership with Ericsson on this one, putting its 21Mbps HSPA+ network to good use. Not to say that phones aren't a great use for high-speed data, of course, but that's enough bandwidth to realistically replace a home internet connection or two -- and that's exactly what the so-called MBR 1210 Turbo Hub sets out to do, spreading an incoming Bell data signal over up to 15 devices connected via WiFi and Ethernet. SpeedUp Mac 1.0 removes extraneous files
Stellar has launched a new system optimization utility for the Mac, SpeedUp Mac 1.0. The program removes redundant files, for instance locating and deleting extraneous language files, unneeded universal binaries and temporary content. Game Center terms of service updated, real names shared on invitation
Apple has quietly tweaked the Game Center terms of service to add in the rule that whenever you first invite a friend to join your friends list in the gaming social network app, your real first and last names (as entered in your iTunes account) are shown to them. You still use a nickname as a full ID (and Game Center will still show your nickname when you log in to browse achievements or see what people are playing), but when you first "friend" someone, they get to see your real name.

Samsung releases 'GPS Restore' app for Captivate and other Galaxy S models
Seems Samsung still hasn't solved the GPS woes on many of its Galaxy S models to the satisfaction of every user -- complaints of inordinately long (or impossible) lock times continue to trickle into our inbox to this very day. To that end, folks might be interested in the news that Samsung Mobile is tweeting about a "GPS Restore Application" that it's thrown together for wiping the GPS subsystem and making it factory-fresh. JPMorgan is handing out iPads to its staff in what could be a major upset to RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, a handful of leaked e-mail has uncovered. Plans for Bologna, Italy Apple Store move forward
Contractors will start work on the construction of a fifth Italian Apple Store next month, says La Repubblica. The outlet will be based in the northern city of Bologna, and occupy a former Stephanel clothing shop at Via Francesco Rizzoli 16. TUAW's Holiday Gift Guide: 10 iPad apps for seniors
Our favorite Wall Street analyst, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray, called the iPad "the Mac of the masses" in a weekend analysis of how the iPad was selling in the pre-Christmas shopping runup. That was based on an unscientific observation that the iPad was apparently making inroads among demographics that normally don't buy Macs.

Acer confirms plans for Windows Phone 7
We saw the briefest whisper of an indication a couple months ago, but now Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci has come out and said it: Acer's working on Windows Phone 7. In an interview with Ina Fried, Gianfranco touched briefly on the company's plans for Microsoft's new OS, after an ill-fated stint with Windows Mobile not so long ago. Daily iPad publication reportedly delayed until 2011
The Financial Times (FT) is reporting today (subscription required) that Rupert Murdoch's forthcoming iPad publication, The Daily, may be delayed until 2011. Quoting "people familiar to the project," FT says that the joint venture between News Corp and Apple is likely to debut next year. Neither Apple or News Corp supplied FT with a comment. Lawsuit pins Connecticut housefire on MagSafe adapter
A new lawsuit accuses Apple of neglecting the safety of its MagSafe power adapters, according to AppleInsider. At the core of the dispute is a fire that hit a Connecticut family's home on May 23rd, 2008; the plaintiff cites the Glastonbury town fire marshal as tracing the incident back to the "external system components" of a MacBook Pro. The case is being pursued by an insurance firm, the Great Northern Insurance Company, which paid the fire victims over $75,000.

iPad closing gaps in ownership, reading habits with Kindle
The gap between iPad and Kindle ownership is closing fast not just in ownership but in the way owners actually use their devices, ChangeWave found today. Of its current pool of respondents, 32 percent claimed in November to have an iPad as their e-reader. The portion was still lower than Amazon's 47 percent but is much closer than in August, when 62 percent claimed to use a Kindle and just 16 percent pointed to their iPads.

Apple chief Steve Jobs reassured those worried about limited AirPlay support in iOS 4.2 today with word that it would be available next year. Not content with hacked implementations, a MacRumors reader asking about support in Safari and third-party apps was given a simple confirmation by the CEO. Here's a great piece of Apple history. In this video (check it out after the break), Steve Jobs gives a demonstration of a NeXT computer. You'll remember that Steve formed NeXT in 1995 after being ousted from Apple. Years later, in 1996, Apple purchased NeXT after Steve's return. Much of the current Mac OS X system is built on the OPENSTEP foundation.
You needn't look too closely to see the predecessors of Mac OS X, like the dock, the services menu, the home directory and windows that display their contents while being dragged. iPhone URL display potential security threat
Security research specialist Nitesh Dhanjani has demonstrated how mobile Safari's ability to hide a web page's URL can be used to trick users. Specifically, his proof-of-concept site shows a "fake" URL filed once the real one has been hidden, preventing users from realizing that they're not looking at the site they intended to see.
Dhanjani goes on to note that, in situations where a URL filed should be visible, a hacker could simply present the fake one, tricking most users. He offers more detail on his blog, and says that he's been in communication with Apple about the issue. You can check out a brief video of how the trick works after the break.

Barnes & Noble plans to get 'well beyond' 20% of e-books
Barnes & Noble plans to claim a large part of the e-book market in the near future, it said when discussing its latest results. Apple kills PhotoFast 256GB MacBook Air upgrade kit
Easy come, easy go. Apple has reportedly asked (politely, we assume) PhotoFast not to sell the 256GB MacBook Air SSD upgrade kit we were so eager to get our hands on. In fact, the product page is throwing a 404 this morning.
The kit looked great, and included the 256GB upgrade chip as well as a USB 3.0 housing for the 64GB chip currently in the 11.6-inch Air. Plus, it could read and write at 250MB/s while Apple's SSD clocks in between 150MB/s and 160MB/s.
PhotoFast is currently licensed with Apple to make Apple accessories through the MFi Program, a privilege that would be a bummer to lose, to say the least. Cheer up, MacBook Air users, and

Apple changes Game Center terms to show full names
Apple has sent out an e-mail notification, warning Game Center users of a change to the service's terms and conditions. As with Microsoft's Xbox Live network, Game Center users can send out friend requests to other gamers in order to track them and join up for multiplayer matches. In a significant difference however, Apple says it is now including real full names when requests are sent out, taken from Apple IDs.

Palit leaks NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 ahead of launch
Video card maker Palit late today spoiled NVIDIA's plans for its next 500-series graphics chipset with details given out days ahead of launch. Sales sheets sent out early have shown the GeForce GTX 570, a more mainstream alternative to the GTX 580, that would potentially outperform the older GTX 480 flagship while still costing less. The design would have a lower 1.28GB of RAM and a narrower 320-bit bus, according to Kitguru's copy, but would boost the main clock speed from 700MHz to 732MHz while also using faster individual shaders and video memory.

One of the most asked-for features for the second generation of the iPad is for a front-facing camera that can be used with Apple's FaceTime video chat app. After all, with FaceTime available on every iPhone 4 and downloadable in beta form for Mac OS X, the ability to engage in video-enhanced conversations with friends and family on future iPads is a foregone conclusion.

Auch wenn es sich bei diesem Gerät um einen Fake handelt, die Idee ist wirklich nett: Der Roboter WheeMe verspricht Rückenmassagen durch munteres Herumrollen auf dem Nutzerrücken, wobei die speziell gestalteten Räder für den Massageeffekt sorgen sollen, während eine Sensorschar aufpasst, dass der Bot nicht vom Rücken plumpst. Im Video sieht der Stopp- und Wendevorgang allerdings ein bisschen so aus, als würde da jemand an einer unsichtbaren Schnur ziehen, aber wie gesagt: Die Idee ist entzückend. Einen Preis für WheeMe gibt´s noch nicht, im Januar soll das Teil aber im US-Onlineshop zu haben sein.

The European Commission today said it would investigate Google following antitrust allegations. Officials would check whether it abused a "dominant market position" in both search and in ads. In the latest sign of a trend that has been ongoing in the tech industry for more than a decade, Apple has gobbled up another big chunk of land in Cupertino, CA that is being vacated by Hewlett-Packard. Game Center: Nickname in Kombination mit Realname ab sofort Standard
Apple hat die Nutzungsregeln für das iOS Game Center angepasst: Ab sofort wird bei jeder Kontaktanfrage sowie jeder Kontaktbestätigung der Realname zusammen mit dem Game Center-Nickname übertragen.
Bisher wurde bei Anfragen sowie Bestätigungen lediglich der Gamername vermerkt, jetzt wird dieser mit dem vollständigen Namen ergänzt. Dies dürfte mittelfristig für eine kompletten Umschwung im Onlinegaming sorgen.

TUAW's Daily App: Flickr HD
Flickr HD (or flickr hd, as it's styled in the App Store) just got a nice update recently to version 6.0, and it's quite an excellent way to browse and view the popular photo-sharing site Flickr on an iOS device. The latest version brings a feature called "Instaswitch," which will automatically change the picture shown on the app every single minute, right on the minute (I guess it loads up in the background). The app can also display a clock and the photo information on the screen, so you can use your iOS device as a digital photo frame and bring shots in directly from your Flickr account, public photos from someone you know or even Flickr's own favorites feed.

Nikon, SanDisk, Sony team on 500MBps CompactFlash cards
Nikon, SanDisk and Sony today proposed a format to the CompactFlash Association that would dramatically increase the performance of CF cards. The revamp would switch from an internal Parallel ATA interface to PCI Express, giving as much as 500MB per second of headroom. It would be three times faster than the 167MB CF 6.0 spec finished just this month and still faster than the 375MB per second CFast standard, which uses SATA.

PC-Markt wird langsamer wachsen

Geselliger Roboterkopf ist supercute, mit Glatze erst recht (Video)

"Super cute" nennt ihn ein Forscher der UT Austin, und das stimmt. Der Dreamer genannte Roboterkopf, Resultat einer Zusammenarbeit der Uni mit der Firma Meka, ist sogar noch herziger, wenn er von Haut und Haaren im Manga-Stil befreit mit seinen Riesenaugen direkt unter dem Kabelhirn hervorblinzelt. So sehen wir das, aber checkt das Video nach dem Break und urteilt selbst. Dreamer ist übrigens kein gewöhnlicher Roboterkopf, sondern ein "geselliger Humanoidenkopf", der mit seinem menschlichen Gegenüber im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes liebäugelt. Wir sind entzückt.

OK: Es handelt sich um Werbung, aber wenigstens kommt diese Werbung mit einer wirklich drolligen Idee daher: Schrauber haben im Auftrag von Conrad Electronic ein Fahrradschloss ausgetüftelt, das mitsam Drahtesel Laternenpfähle heraufklettern oder herauffahren kann, um das Vehikel vor Langfingern zu schützen. Die Kletterei wird per Fernbedienung gesteuert, für das Kletterschloss gibt´s dann auch eine Bauanleitung, natürlich samt Einkaufsliste. Praktisch ist das Schloss aber wohl kaum: Zum einen dürfte es ordentlich was wiegen, zum zweiten sind passende Masten (zylindrischer Querschnitt ohne Noppen oder andere Hindernisse) wohl gar nicht so oft zu finden. Way back in February, the European Union announced its intention to look into allegations made against Google that the search leader wasn't ranking its competitors fairly in the results it delivered. Well, that fact-finding mission seems to have unearthed at least some hint of impropriety on Google's part, as it's now shed the "preliminary" label and has become a full-on antitrust probe. They may not be the first vacuum shoes to emerge in concept form, but these so-called Foki shoes from designer Adika Titut Triyugo are certainly the most stylish -- at least in an ASIMO chic sort of way. They also boast a few new tricks not seen before, including an LED display on top that indicates how much dirt you've picked up, and a unique deign that allows them to be completely folded up when not in use. Google Earth wird noch realistischer: In der neuen Version 6 wachsen 3D-Bäume in den Himmel. Achtzig Millionen Bäume hat Google bisher nach eigenen Angaben in einigen Städten wie Berlin, Athen, New York City, San Francisco oder Tokyo gepflanzt. WIchtiger ist aber, dass die Street View verbessert wurde. Sie wird nun wie in Google Maps mit dem sogenannten Pegman, einem orangen Männchen, angesteuert. Adobe gives the sack to Project Rome design app
Just over a month ago we told you about a new content and website creation app called Project Rome that Adobe had released for a public trial. We just got a note from Adobe and a link to a forum post saying in essence never mind. Based on feedback from users, Adobe has decided to abandon development of the product after just a few weeks of public availability.

Dell Vostro V130 updated with more ports, fancy 'Hyperbaric' cooling
Back when we reviewed the Dell Vostro V13 we had a few complaints, including the fact that it lasted less than three hours on a charge and lacked of an HDMI port. Well, Dell's gone and taken care of at least one of those issues with its new Vostro V130. The original thin and light chassis has been kept in tact, which means there's still the same old battery issues, but Dell's freshened up the 13.3-inch magnesium alloy laptop with an HDMI port, extra USB socket, a SIM card slot, new Core i3 / i5 ULV processor options, and some new Intel "Hyperbaric Cooling" technology. We don't know much about that new cooling stuff, but apparently it will help the .65-inch thick system stay cool and quiet. Oh, and did we mention it now comes in that bright red hue?! The

Illumination Software Creator intros v3 beta, adds iOS
Radical Breeze has brought out the first public beta of its visual software creation program, Illumination. Version 3b1's biggest single change is the new ability to build iPhone apps from the same "code-free" base that already creates apps for Android, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows and Flash. We already knew the Nook Color was capable of something a bit more than its initial offering, having seen Angry Birds run fairly smoothly on a dev unit. Infinity Blade hits App Store December 9th for $5.99
Chair and Epic Games' extremely impressive Infinity Blade title has gotten a final release date and price: you'll be able to hack and slash your way around the medieval RPG on December 9th for a purchase price of $5.99. The app will be universal and will run on iPhone 3GS and above, up to and including the iPad and the latest iPhone and iPod touch. Players will be able to level up and gear up their characters as they fight through the world towards the game's big boss, a character called "the God-King."

No doubt about it: Microsoft Office is the 800-pound gorilla of productivity suites, both on the Mac and on Windows. In the latest version, Office 2011, the product teams have added lots of zing both in performance and features.

Sans Digital has released two new five-bay RAID towers in its TowerSTOR series. The 2.5-inch drive oriented TS25CT and its 3.5-inch counterpart the TS35CT have built in hardware RAID processors, supporting RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 and JBOD (just a bunch of disks) or CLONE options. BlackBerry Empathy design concept feels bad that you're stuck using a BlackBerry

Mongoliad apps out now on iPhone and iPad
We've been following the Mongoliad project by author Neal Stephenson ever since it was announced last May, and the iOS apps for the project have finally been released on the iOS App Store. The apps are free, but you'll remember that the project is actually a subscription-based universe of fiction, so while there are some free things to read in there, you'll have to buy a membership or a subscription if you want access to everything. You can do so from directly within the app -- it's about seven bucks for more than a novel's worth of material, so it's not a bad price at all.

Level 3: Comcast now has a 'toll booth' fee for online video
Level 3 today raised alarms with claims that Comcast was engaging in anti-competitive behavior with a new charge for online video. The Internet backbone provider said that Comcast had suddenly started charging extra for video to its customers and threatened to block video traffic from Level 3, which supplies streams for Netflix and other major providers. It agreed to pay the fee to avoid a disruption but accused Comcast of setting up a "toll booth" deliberately designed to prevent competition with both cable TV and its own Internet features

27" iMac gets an SSD, process is not for the faint-hearted
There comes a time in a boy's life when his latest toy no longer thrills him as it did when it was shiny and new. Engadget blogger Richard Lai found that his Core i7 27" iMac was slowing down as it neared its first birthday, so he decided to liven things up by popping a 240GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD into the box.
Watching Richard tear apart his baby was a bit unnerving to me. I recall opening a iMac G5 about five years ago to swap out a noisy power supply and fan assembly, and I still shudder to think about that.

iMac turned ant farm for sale on eBay
We've seen lots of interesting ways to use old Macs, including the great Macquarium that pops up every now and again. But I think an ant farm is a new one -- that's what this 17" G5 iMac has been turned into. An ebay seller in Hawaii says he emptied out the Mac's insides and built a custom habitat to slide in and out of the unit, and then filled it up with a special gel designed to grow and support a colony of ants. The only issue? He can't get the ants he'd need for the farm in Hawaii, so he's selling the whole kit and caboodle, ants not included.

Tesco begins selling iPad in the UK
Tesco, the massive global grocer and merchandising retailer, has today begun selling all six models of the iPad on its Tesco Direct website and in select Tesco stores. While the iPad has been available in the UK since May, the addition of Tesco as an iPad reseller is significant, because it is the largest retailer in the United Kingdom and provides yet another local for UK customers, specifically those not close to an Apple Store, to buy an iPad.

Zalman's SandForce-based N Series SSD drive gets reviewed, patted on the back
Zalman's making an SSD? You betcha, and it's embedding a SandForce SF-1222 controller in its N Series line. That controller has proven to be the go-to one for loads of solid state drives, but Zalman's joining the party a touch late. Unfortunately for it, the MSRPs affixed to the 64GB ($169) and 128GB ($289) versions aren't exactly class-leading, but the benchmarking gurus over at Legit Reviews took it upon themselves to test a 128GB model anyway. After running the gauntlet, the conclusions drawn were fairly predictable: scores were right in line with every other SandForce drive they had tested in recent months, with words like "speedy, resilient, and reliable" detailing the drive. Acer: Android 3 will 'fix' what iPad lacks, Meego in 2H 2011
Acer chief executive Gianfranco Lanci in an interview published today provided extra insight into its tablet strategy. The company's decision to ship its Android tablets only in April was a deliberate one to wait for Android 3.0, or Honeycomb, which should provide the tablet optimizations it wants. He agreed with Apple that 10 inches was the ideal tablet size but also explained to AllThingsD that the variety Android 3.0 would allow would build on things Apple couldn't or wouldn't do in the category.
