Samsung preps NFC chip for phones with built-in flash
Continuing on its technolgy launches today, Samsung has revealed a new near field communications (NFC) chip designed for smartphones. The design is the first to have built-in flash memory and can be upgraded on the spot. Making the change would let phone creators adapt the chip to new formats and prevent them from being locked in.

Google Reader gets native Android app
We're surprised it took this long, but what good would it do to live in the past? Google Reader is now available to download as a native app for Android, care of Google Inc. itself. Multiple accounts are supported, preferences are synced, search is enabled, and since it's native, you can send to other apps (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, Bluetooth). TrueHDR for iPhone updates and improves photo quality
HDR (high dynamic range) photos are getting a lot of buzz now, especially since Apple built HDR capabilities into the iPhone 4. While the official Apple implementation is pretty good, I still suggest photographers take a look at third party offerings which have more options, and in my opinion, some of which do a better job.

Computer Engineer Barbie now available, and her phone has been upgraded since we last saw her
We were fairly impressed with Computer Engineer Barbie's Linux laptop and cellphone when we last saw her at the Toy Fair in New York City. Well, the doll is available now, and her gear has gotten an upgrade for the retail version. The pink laptop now boasts some kind of custom Barbie operating system, and yes, she seems to be sporting an iPhone these days. We assume this is a tie in with Mattel's Barbie 'I Can Be' iPhone app, but we also remember from our childhood that Barbie is an intense tech geek who always has to have the latest gear, so we can't say that we're surprised. BBC confirms plans for international iPlayer on iPad
The BBC is working on international access to iPlayer via the iPad, according to the Financial Times. iPlayer allows Internet-based consumption of BBC TV and radio shows, stretching back as far as seven days. Samsung PLS improves on IPS displays like iPad's, costs less
Samsung today unveiled a new form of LCD technology that could improve image quality even beyond existing IPS displays. Known as Super PLS (Plane to Line Switching), it changes the shape of the pixels to emit more light from the sides. The technique doubles the typical viewing angle with a bright picture but also improves the overall brightness by 10 percent.

OpenFeint announces in-app content service, infrastructure to support freemium games
Social gaming network OpenFeint has finally unveiled its OpenFeint X service, which will allow developers on the App Store (and a few other mobile platforms) to add cloud-based microtransaction content to their games on top of Apple's own in-app purchase service. This is apparently a system that lives outside of Apple's own store, and allows developers to quickly and easily add in-app content without having to go through Apple's approval system. If that sounds confusing, it's because the system is still so new -- only a few developers have worked with it so far (though we're supposed to see it running in popular titles like Fruit Ninja soon), and the updates for providing virtual currency and goods aren't out yet. Pocket Frogs hits 3 million downloads, 350k daily active users
NimbleBit developer Ian Marsh tweeted a link to a promotional infographic about popular app Pocket Frogs yesterday, and the title has apparently reached a whopping three million downloads in just ten weeks on the App Store. Daily active users have peaked at 350,000, which is a pretty sizable number for an app of this scale (you can also see on the graphic that it's been developed by a team of 2, and less than $500 has been spent on marketing the app).

Intel, NVIDIA in settlement talks that may help Apple
Intel and NVIDIA are in discussions to try and settle their dispute over system chipsets in a move that could give a major boost to Apple, leaks revealed Wednesday. Most of the details are still secret, but NVIDIA is most likely pressing to get back rights to make system chipsets for Intel processors with integrated memory controllers. The talks were private, Bloomberg said.

Apple has won a US patent on a form of 3D display technology, says IDG News. Documents describe what is called an "autostereoscopic" method, in which the 3D illusion works without glasses. Verizon LTE / 4G preview with the LG VL600 modem

BBC to launch subscription iPad player in the US
The BBC's iPlayer was made Mac compatible in 2008. Now, The Financial Times (FT) is reporting (subscription required) that the network intends to make the on-demand service available to iPads, using a subscription model.
Don't hold your breath while you wait, however. BBC Worldwide said that this isn't going to happen until "the middle of next year," and even then only in "certain target markets." RIM sues Kik for allegedly copying BlackBerry Messenger
RIM late Tuesday sued Kik for allegedly infringing on three patents relating to BlackBerry Messenger. The exact details of the lawsuit aren't public but include accusations that Kik chief Ted Livingston used knowledge when he worked at RIM in 2007 and 2008 to copy BBM. iPhone, Android "most desired" smartphones for upgraders in the U.S.
Here's a little analyst-based hint for those of you not sure what to get your smartphone-obsessed loved one this holiday season.
According to a survey released by Neilsen, 29.7 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers now have smartphones (with Apple, RIM and Android taking the lion's share). Android's market share certainly has been growing, though, with RIM apparently loosing out the most.

RIM sues Kik in Canada for patent infringement

Verizon takes credit for making Android popular
Verizon as part of its 4G launch claimed itself directly responsible for the popularity of Android and also clarified its device plans. Google's mobile OS "took off" when it launched on Verizon with the Motorola Droid, the carrier said, and 4G was likely to do the same this Sunday when the LTE network when live. Verizon 4G official: December 5, two USB modems
Verizon as promised today confirmed the launch of its LTE-based 4G network. The service will go live in all of the planned 38 initial cities, including 60 airports, on December 5. Average speeds should be about 10 times faster than Verizon's 3G, at between 5Mbps and 12Mbps; the performance is enough that 20 typical photos could download in one minute or a single song in four seconds, Verizon said.

Cinema Displays dropping audio, show slow volume control
The 27-inch Cinema Display is suffering from serious audio problems, some owners say. AppleInsider notes that complaints first began in October, but have persisted without any solution from Apple. In worst-case scenarios Cinema Displays have been losing built-in audio entirely, although the glitch can be temporarily solved by unplugging and reconnecting the monitor, or in some instances changing audio settings.

And here we go: Verizon just announced its 4G LTE pricing and full list of coverage areas. BlackBerry unusually overtakes iOS in US web share
The BlackBerry saw a rare recent victory today after StatCounter showed the platform overtaking the iPhone in web use in the US. After steadily narrowing the gap over the past year, RIM just slightly overtook Apple in traffic, accounting for 34.3 percent of American traffic where iOS slipped to 33 percent. Yamaha has just announced its latest iPod dock, the TSX-140. Its unique feature is said to be the IntelliAlarm that gradually fades in music as to not jolt sleepers awake. JPMorgan iPad distribution confirmed, says Bloomberg
According to an email obtained by Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase & Co will be handing out free iPads to all associates in its global investment banking division (that's investment bankers for you and me).
In a pilot program to last until May 2011, the bankers will trial the device to see how well it fairs as an additional mobile tool as well as being allowed to take advantage of the device for personal use.
"We believe there are real benefits in our working environment that can be realized using this device - as well as the personal productivity and enjoyment that come as part of the package," said two New York-based JPMorgan managing directors in the email.

FCC details neutrality rules, sets wireless no-block rule
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski today outlined a new set of net neutrality rules that would be put to a vote at the agency's December meeting. The rules will guarantee a "right to know" for Internet access that focuses on transparency, including a "meaningful" transparency rule that tells users and developers what would be blocked or throttled. Flock 3.5 browser for Mac moves to speedy Chromium 7 engine
Flock, the free combo web browser / social networking tool / dessert topping, has been updated on all platforms to version 3.5, but the newest version for Mac OS X has really received a boost.
In the past, Flock for Mac OS X was based on Gecko, the web browser layout engine from Mozilla that powers the Firefox browser. Unfortunately for Mac users, Flock was a bit on the slow side.
Flock 3.5 for Mac OS X has replaced the Gecko engine with the shiny, speedy new Chromium 7 engine, which is based on WebKit. I downloaded the new Mac OS X edition yesterday and it feels much faster than the previous version, although I have no benchmarks to validate that claim.

iPad coming to Thailand on December 3rd
Apple will launch the iPad in Thailand on Friday, December 3rd, reports say. Prices should range between 15,900 baht ($528) for a base 16GB Wi-Fi tablet and 25,900 baht ($860) for a 64GB 3G version. People will be able to buy from at least two sources: local reseller iStudio, or Apple itself via the company's online store, which already has an order page.

Nielsen: Android makes huge gains in US smartphone marketshare, RIM takes a backseat, Apple leads in desirability
Nielsen's just released a report finding that 29.7 percent of mobile users in the United States now own a smartphone. Of that 29.7 percent (which you can see in the pie chart above), 27.9 percent of them have iPhones, 27.4 percent are BlackBerry users, and 22.7 percent have an Android device. Windows Mobile, Symbian, Linux and Palm are left to divide up the remaining chunk -- about 22 percent -- of the market. That's a massive shift from the beginning of the year, when the iPhone boasted 28 percent of the market, BlackBerry had 35 percent, and Windows Mobile about 19 percent. HP drops Windows Home Server in favor of webOS
Microsoft was dealt a hit late Tuesday as HP confirmed that it was dropping Windows Home Server. The company will phase out its MediaSmart home servers at the end of 2010 and will switch to Palm's webOS for future devices. iPhone still edging out Android in US share, desirability
Despite claims to the contrary, Apple may still have the lead not just in US smartphone market share but also in demand, Nielsen said today. As of October, the iPhone had 27.9 percent of share of those asked, which was not just ahead of Android's 22.7 percent but just ahead of RIM's 27.4 percent. Google e-book store finally close to launch
Google's long promised Editions e-bookstore is near launching, both official and unofficial sources said today. Project management lead Scott Dougall confirmed that the bookstore was on track to launch in the US by the end of the year and internationally in early 2011. While this would give Google four weeks to go, publishers told the WSJ that they were already uploading books and thus that Editions could be ready sooner in that timeframe.

This one's interesting -- it's a Korean RPG that's been translated over to the iPhone. If you've ever played any of the old 16-bit Super Nintendo RPGs like Secret of Mana, you'll know how this one works. You can level up and fight enemies in real time while using various abilities and gearing your way up through a sizable story. Playstation Phone taucht in Griechenland auf (Video)

Passt irgendwie für ein Gerät, dessen Codename Zeus ist, dass es zuerst in Griechenland auftaucht. So geschehen mit Sony Ericcssons großem Crossover aus Handheld-Konsole und Android Phone, dem Playstation Phone. Leider gibt es im Video den Slider nicht zu sehen, aber wenn man sich das Design sonst so ansieht, scheint es schon das Echte zu sein. Anders als die Konkurrenz will man alle beliefern und sehr webzentriert sein: so sollen die Ebooks auch direkt im Browser lesbar sein und ohne jede Bindung an Hard- oder Software auskommen. Bei den Preisen soll sich Google Editions hingegen an Amazon und Barnes & Noble orientieren. Open Internet Order: An Order adopting basic rules of the road to preserve the open Internet as a platform for innovation, investment, competition, and free expression. These rules would protect consumers' and innovators' right to know basic information about broadband service, right to send and receive lawful Internet traffic, and right to a level playing field, while providing broadband Internet access providers with the flexibility to reasonably manage their networks.

Adobe Flash Player 10.2 beta arrives, expands hardware acceleration
Adobe's ubiquitous Flash Player has a new beta version out today that promises to finally complete the move to hardware acceleration of video played back using the format. You'll already be aware that the current, non-beta Flash already does some offloading of video tasks to the GPU, but the new Stage Video API permits the entire workload to be shifted over, resulting in "just over 0 percent" CPU utilization when playing back 1080p clips. For those who crave being on the bleeding edge of browser plugin technology, this is your lucky day -- Adobe's Flash Player 10.2 beta is now downloadable for the Mac, as well as for Windows and Linux machines.
The big advance in this build is preliminary support for Stage Video, the new playback infrastructure that is intended to further reduce Flash's performance impact while playing back video content. While previous versions of Flash Player 10 leveraged GPU acceleration for video decoding, 10.2 offloads nearly all the video pipeline tasks onto the GPU to alleviate most of the CPU load.

Delta expands WiFi access to select regional jets
Good news, frequent (and not so frequent) fliers. Nokia Siemens says iOS 4.2 reduces iPhone network congestion
iOS 4.2 has new technology to reduce the overhead of the iPhone on cellular networks, Nokia Siemens Networks revealed today. Although unpublished by Apple, the update brought a technique known as Network Controlled Fast Dormancy that helps a smartphone go quiet without going completely idle. The method keeps the iPhone in a limbo state that saves it from having to reconnect to the network, not only eliminating the flood of traffic from a reconnect but improving its battery life by limiting the necessary traffic.

Late leak has Verizon 4G live Dec. 5 with two modems
A late leak this evening has provided some details of what will show at Verizon's 4G press conference. The LTE network is now due to go live on December 5 and will start out with the twoUSB modems leaked earlier. Black Friday sees lots of new devices, record app downloads this year
Flurry's analytics blog has a new post up about the bump that the App Store got last weekend. As I said in last week's talkcast, app developers have noticed that the holiday shopping season not only brings a slew of new iPod touches and iPhones into the mix (and this year, the iPad as well), but a resultant flood of customers seeking to buy and try out new apps. Delta to add Wi-Fi to all Delta Connection regional flights
Delta Air Lines -- which began installing Wi-Fi on its domestic main-route aircraft in 2008, and have offered service on some regional flights as well -- will add Wi-Fi service to all Delta Connection carriers throughout 2011, making it the first US carrier to provide Wi-Fi on all flights, including Delta Shuttle flights such as the Boston-NYC and Chicago-Washington DC routes.

Report: In-app purchases to overtake download revenues by 2013
Here's an interesting report from Juniper Research. According to their work, mobile app revenues will reportedly grow from the current US $6 billion to a whopping $11 billion by 2015. And the majority of that revenue will come not from the standard download fee, but instead from in-app purchases, according to Juniper. The firm claims that in-app purchase revenue will top one-off download fees by 2013. That seems hard to believe, given my current anecdotal usage, but there's no question that in-app purchases are growing by leaps and bounds as a form of sizable revenue for app developers.

UBS: Verizon will gain from iPhone, but AT&T won't lose
A report from UBS Securities analyst John Hodulik makes some surprising predictions about how AT&T will fare once its exclusivity on Apple's iPhone ends, Barron's is reporting. Hodulik has raised his estimate on AT&T for 2011 (maintaining a "Buy" rating) and lowered his Verizon estimate ("Neutral") for the same period, despite his belief -- which is unverifiable -- that Verizon will finally gain the ability to sell iPhones in the first quarter of 2011.

Apple's Director of Global Data Center Operations passes away at 41
We regret to report that Olivier Sanche, Apple's Director of Global Data Center Operations, passed away on Thanksgiving from a heart attack at the young age of 41. As DataCenterKnowledge notes, Sanche was "a thought leader in data center energy efficiency, and used his expertise to streamline operations at many of the world's largest technology companies, making a major collective impact on the industry's carbon output in the process."

Apple patent teases convertible laptop / tablet
Seen any of those rumors over the years about Apple making a tablet/laptop combo for the masses? Well it seems at least part of the rumor has gone and gotten itself a patent for itself.

iPhone outselling Nokia N8 by six to one in Europe
Apple is outselling Nokia's N8 by a wide margin in Europe, Morgan Stanley analyst Patrick Standaert found in an investment note today. Checks with 150 phone stores across five European countries showed iPhones selling by a ratio of six to one. Customers were also reportedly happy with the N8 in most areas except for the app count on the Ovi Store, which was well behind the iPhone's catalog.

Steve Jobs says AirPlay video will work in Safari and third-party apps next year
MacRumors is reporting that one of their readers emailed Steve Jobs to ask if Apple was ever going to enable AirPlay to stream videos from third-party apps or those embedded in a web page in Safari. Jobs answered:

Last week, we reported that Apple's Phil Schiller has gotten a verified account on Twitter, and since then, his popularity on the short form social networking service has apparently skyrocketed. Rather than just retreat to the shadows, he's stepping up into the limelight, sharing insights and answering questions of all kinds from Apple fans. Microsoft reiterates copy and paste is Windows Phone 7's first update, 'additional updates delivered in the future'
Chris Walsh -- one of the forces behind the ChevronWP7 app sideload hack for Windows Phone 7 -- went on record earlier this week saying that the first platform update coming early next year would be "massive" with so many improvements and new features that "they could have called it Windows Phone 8." Motorola mobile group split to take place just before CES
Motorola today provided more details of its promised mobile division split. The new company, Motorola Mobility, will separate from its parent on January 4, just ahead of its CES presence a day later. A reverse stock split as part of the deal will give one share of the new company's stock for every eight owned in the original Motorola company, which will now be called Motorola Solutions.

Survey: Apple iPad catching up to Kindle
There is a big price difference still, but the iPad is challenging the Amazon Kindle as a preferred device for reading e-books in ownership and satisfaction.
That's according to a ChangeWave survey of more than 2,800 U.S. consumers. Of iPad owners, 75% said they were "very satisfied" with their devices, while only 54% of Kindle owners could say the same. When the "somewhat satisfied" numbers are added, it's a tighter competition, with the iPad scoring 96% and the Kindle getting 92%.

FCC looks into Comcast/Level 3 spat, opens 120MHz wireless
FCC chairman Juilus Genachowski today said he was looking into Level 3's allegations that Comcast was charging extra for video. Speaking at a press conference, the official said it was "premature to comment" but promised that his agency was "looking into it." He didn't have an estimate as to when the FCC might have an answer.
