I get tons of people emailing me asking if they could send me samples of their product to review. Nowadays a lot of those requests come from people or companies that make some form of iPad stand or another. And lets be honest here: there's not much difference between one iPad stand and the next. Some are lighter than others, some have a sexier design, but they all do basically the same thing: they let you prop your iPad up on a flat surface. Apple data center head dies following heart attack

The director of Apple's data center team, Olivier Sanche, died of a heart attack last Thursday, news has emerged. Prior to his last job, Sanche is said to have worked on streamlining operations at several major technology companies like AT&T and eBay, with a particular emphasis on energy efficiency. Virgin founder Richard Branson's iPad-focused magazine Project has received both a placeholder page and an iTunes link (App Store) ahead of its release tomorrow. It's kind of amazing how the iPad and iPhone have crept more and more into my digital life, slowly encroaching on my laptop use. Of course the iPad isn't very good for Photoshop or some of the high end programs I need to use at times, but I've noticed that over the holidays with time at home the iPad is getting about 90% of my computing attention. Checking the web, email, weather, flight info, you name it, the iPad is doing it all quite nicely, backed up by the iPhone. PwnageTool update unlocks iPhone 3G, 3GS

The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of PwnageTool, one of its hacking utilities for iOS devices. The updated software promises to unlock some models of the iPhone 3G and 3GS for unsupported carriers when using iOS 4.2.1. It works because the original iPad firmware, iOS 3.2.2, has been discovered to contain the v06.15.00 baseband, which is still vulnerable to an old exploit.

iPhone owners uniquely loyal to Apple

A survey of over 2,600 mobile phone users in Brazil, Germany, Spain, Britain, the United States and China shows that only about 25 percent of smartphone owners are loyal to their current operating system. The survey by German firm Gfk found that 56 percent of smartphone owners were open to trying a new OS with their next phone, with only Apple bucking the trend with a 59 percent loyalty rate to iOS. Microsoft users were the least loyal to their OS with a 21 percent loyalty rate, while Blackberry came in at 35 percent, Android at 28 percent, and Nokia/Symbian at 24 percent. Windows Phone 7 devs complain of broken analytics, no pay

Early Windows Phone 7 developers have reported mounting problems with a lack of proper tools and even pay. GoVoice app writer Nick Yu recently said that Microsoft's analytics tools for the mobile OS aren't working, making it impossible to track how many copies had been downloaded or most other details. Analyst: Apple Stores kept full over Thanksgiving weekend

At least some Apple Stores were kept busy well past Black Friday, says Ticonderoga analyst Brian White. He notes that despite Apple only offering discounts for one day until Cyber Monday, Apple Stores in his neighborhood were crowded as late as Sunday evening. The iPad is believed to have had the greatest buzz, owing to a $41 price cut. White also suspects that the MacBook Air did well, but unlike other analysts does not quote hard figures.

Apple has garnered yet another win in a customer satisfaction survey -- this time it's PC World conferring the honors onto Cupertino, as Apple has topped both the laptop and desktop categories for most reliable and well-supported computer products. PC World says that Apple also did well in its smartphone category (with, of course, the iPhone), but that the antenna issues and a few other problems with the iPhone kept it from being listed at the top of the category. Meka, UT Austin researchers show off 'sociable' Dreamer robot head

The folks at UT Austin's HCR Laboratory have been working on a Meka humanoid robot for some time now, but they've only just recently added one pretty significant component to it: a head. This so-called "Dreamer" isn't just your ordinary robot head, though -- described by the researchers as a "sociable humanoid head," the head is modeled on anime and comic characters, and promises to establish an "organic link to its biological counterpart, creating feelings of quasi-affinity in response to gestures and synthetic emotions." US Surpreme Court agrees to hear Microsoft appeal in Word patent case

It's been quite a few months since we've seen any major developments in Microsoft's patent battle with Toronto-based i4i Inc over Microsoft Word, but it looks like things are now about to change in a big way. Study: few smartphone owners loyal, iPhone the exception

Only a quarter of smartphone owners plan to stick to their existing choice of OS for their next models with only Apple showing significant loyalty, GfK found in a new study. Swedish iPad due to launch tomorrow

Apple will finally launch the iPad in Sweden tomorrow, November 30th, several media outlets have confirmed. The tablet should be available from third-party vendors like Elgiganten and Media Markt, the latter of which is holding a midnight launch event. HTC HD7 may also suffer from 'death grip'

HTC's HD7 may suffer the same "death grip" issue with its antenna as claimed for the iPhone 4 and other modern smartphones, owners have been finding this weekend. A YouTube poster (below) has shown the T-Mobile version of the phone dropping from four bars to just one after gripping the phone firmly in a natural position. A quick follow-up test from WPCentral (also below) has shown that the signal is low enough to drop calls and bring data to a halt.

iPad, MacBook Air sell well on Black Friday

I visited an Apple Store last Friday and the place was packed -- we had to wait just for a chance to enter the store and once inside, employees were frequently dipping into stacks of MacBook Airs and iPhones. My experience wasn't unique as Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. Along with anecdotal evidence like mine, Piper Jaffray polled 100 Apple Stores by phone to come up with some real numbers. They found that Macs were selling at the rate of 8.2 units per hour per store, down from 8.3 last year. iPads were selling at 8.8 per hour. Apple is bringing on some prominent outside lawyers to help in upcoming lawsuits, says Bloomberg. The company has for instance hired Ropert Krupka of Kirkland & Ellis, who previously helped Apple negotiate a $100 million settlement with Creative. Gartner: PCs shipping in smaller numbers due to iPad effect

The iPad's influence on the market has led to a direct drop in the estimated sales for this year and next, Gartner said today. It lowered its estimates for PC shipments in 2010 down to 352.4 million as a direct result of tablets; the number was still up 14.3 percent from last year but down from a 17.9 percent jump estimated as recently as September. Comcast internet down across parts of the eastern seaboard, fix on the way

Twitter's abuzz with angry Comcast customers tonight, as internet service is down in Boston and parts of the eastern United States, a situation the company's since confirmed at its official Twitter account. Comcast's calling it an unexpected outage and says that "engineers are finalizing the correction" as we speak, though it's admittedly been a couple of hours since that tweet. Meanwhile, Twitter at large seems to have figured out it's a Comcast DNS issue, and have had some luck switching to alternate servers like Google's at 8.8.4.4. and 8.8.8.8.
