Snyderphonics Manta controller takes on Ableton Live, looks (and sounds) great doing it (video)

We sure do love our obscure instruments here at Engadget. Even something as simple as the Monome, with its grid of 64 pads (and little else) can get the creative juices flowin' when partnered with the right software. Well, we just received word that SevenUpLive, the driver that gets Monome to play nice with Ableton Live (via Max / MSP), has just received support for Snyderphonics' handsome Manta controller. What's this all mean? Well, besides looking great, Manta features velocity sensitive plates and polyphonic aftertouch, which means a higher level of control than many of your boutique controllers.

AT&T, Microsoft push Windows Phone 7 hard with BOGO deal

AT&T and Microsoft today hoped to keep Windows Phone 7 sales and today unveiled a Buy One Get One deal (BOGO) for Black Friday. Those who visit an AT&T store and buy the HTC Surround, LG Quantum or Samsung Focus can get another one of the devices for free. All of them cost $199 and need a two-year contract on each of the two lines for the deal.

Phil Schiller's Twitter account gets verified

Apple's Phil Schiller has joined Scott Forstall (though not Steve Jobs) over on Twitter -- he now has a verified account to tweet from, and is following a few celebrity and official company accounts so far. The account's actually been around for a while (Schiller tweeted from France while there and mentioned 500 million app downloads when it was announced last January), but only recently got verified, which means there's one more official Apple voice on the networking service. Intego updates Mac antispam software for Outlook 2011

Intego has updated Personal Antispam to v10.6.5. The program previously offered support for Mail and Entourage, and can now operate in conjunction with the newly-launched Outlook for Mac 2011, part of Microsoft's Office 2011 Mac suite. Apple snagging RIM execs for enterprise iPhone push

A new discovery today on LinkedIn has confirmed that Apple has been 'stealing' RIM's BlackBerry enterprise sales staff to improve corporate iPhone sales [reg. required]. Starting with Strategic Sales lead Geoff Perfect, who left in April 2009, Apple has been acquiring an increasing number of staff over the past 1.5 years. Civilization 5 launches for Mac

Aspyr has launched Civilization V for the Mac, porting Firaxis' turn-based strategy game two months after the debut of the Windows version. Beatles sell 2 million tracks via iTunes already

Has it really been only a week since the day we would never forget? In that short amount of time, Apple has sold 2 million Beatles tracks and generated 45,000 album downloads via iTunes, Billboard magazine said today. Mit Firmware-Update 4.0 begann das iPhone 3G sehr langsam und träge zu werden;Apple hat daraufhin Firmware 4.1 veröffentlicht, welche die gewohnte 3.X-Firmware Geschwindigkeit mitbringen sollte. The Beatles's first appearance on a digital store has managed a dramatic resurgence in sales, data from Apple said. About two million individual tracks and 450,000 albums were sold on iTunes in the first week. OpenFeint has doubled community since Game Center's launch

When Game Center was first announced way back in April, the first question everyone had was about all of the third-party networks that had already built up in the space. Kingston's HyperX Max external SSD packs 195MBps, USB 3.0

Kingston today entered the external solid-state drive arena with a new drive under the HyperX badge it normally reserves for RAM. The HyperX Max External USB 3.0 drive gives users a mid-range SSD that can transfer much faster than current rotating hard drives. A firmware update for the Apple TV, v4.1, should be released at about 10AM Pacific time today, a report suggests. Although not yet announced by Apple, he update is expected to coincide with the rollout of iOS 4.2. iWork iPad apps set to gain update later today

To help back today's iOS 4.2 update, Apple is also planning to launch simultaneous v1.3 updates of the Pages, Keynote and Numbers iPad apps, a news story claims. Thieves smashed a plate-glass door at the Apple Store on Walnut Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania early this morning, making off with over $10,000 worth of merchandise, police say. FCC may revamp 911 to allow live streaming, texting

The FCC today proposed major changes to 911 that would bring smartphones and other devices into the mix. Foxconn ramps up extra iPad factories, may make 40m a year

Foxconn's recently launched Chengdu factories have turned tor producing iPads to help cope with demand, part makers claimed on Tuesday. The lines for the Apple tablet would start out at 10,000 per day, but at 300,000 per month would help keep up with holiday demand and beyond. Insiders for Digitimes said it had already started shipping iPads this month and could be a "major supply base" by early 2011, in time for the next-generation iPad.

Apple's rumored decision to avoid embedded SIMs may have only been for the 2011 refresh, sources argued Tuesday. iOS 4.2.1 users reporting missing music glitches

Some users of the new iOS 4.2.1 firmware are having problems with music playback, Apple's support forums indicate. Affected people note that opening up the iPod app on an iPhone may show no content whatsoever, even though the files are actually on the device. Acer unveils 4.8-inch smartphone, seven- and 10-inch tablets

Acer at its special event in New York City today brought out three Android-based devices launching in the future. Highlighting the range is a 4.8-inch smartphone; one of the largest not badged as a tablet, it will have a wide 1024x480 display and should sit at the high end of smartphones with both an eight-megapixel back camera and a 1.3-megapixel camera in the front. TuneLink Auto tech intros BT/FM transmitter for iOS devices

A company called New Potato Technologies just introduced a new audio streamer, the TuneLink Auto. An unspecified update will allow iBooks users to organize PDFs into folders, says Apple CEO Steve Jobs. A Greek iPad user recently wrote the executive suggesting that storing PDFs in iBooks can be somewhat cumbersome. Why I'm skipping AirPlay

It's pretty simple: I want to stream music from my Mac to my iPad or iPhone. Why? Because I sometimes connect one of those iOS devices to a home stereo. Those devices do not contain my entire iTunes library. Unfortunately, AirPlay won't let me stream my iTunes library to my iOS devices. Thus, I'm not able to use AirPlay in my home. Use Dropbox to backup a few folders every day

There's a nice little tutorial on Justin Schwalbe's blog for using a simple script to backup a few folders to a Dropbox backup folder every day. Why would you do this? Well, let's say you aren't always able to connect to a hard drive for Time Machine, but you have a couple of document folders you want to make sure are backed up off site every day. Acer Iconia first hands-on!

Acer's dual-screen Iconia laptop is bold, for sure, but its LCD panels are also mighty glossy. If you've got a light in the vicinity above you, there's gonna be glare -- we saw it on stage, and we just saw it now in person. That said, the screen is clear and the touch functionality is pretty clever. The keyboard, on the other hands, is pretty hard to use -- even the rep admitted there's a learning curve. If a report from Digitimes is to be believed, Foxconn is adding iPad production at a second factory in Chengdu, China to help meet demand for the Apple tablet. Acer introduces 7-inch and 10-inch Android tablets, shipping April 2011

Shocker of shockers, folks -- Acer's getting into the tablet game, too. With the holidays too close for comfort, the outfit's giving everyone pause that was considering that janky Android tablet on sale for Black Friday. All jesting aside, the flagship 10.1-incher looks quite interesting, boasting a dual-core 1GHz processor, an HDMI output and a native 1280x800 (!) screen resolution. You'll also get a 5 megapixel rear camera, an "HD" front-facing camera for video calling and full multitouch support. Hard to say how many clams it'll cost ya, but at least there's an April 2011 ship date to mark down. M

Acer reveals 4.8-inch Android smartphone with 1024x480 screen resolution

Acer may be calling this "100 percent smartphone. 100 percent tablet.," but something just doesn't add up there. That being said, we have to agree that a 1024x480 screen resolution on a 4.8-inch smartphone is downright drool-worthy. Apple teases Black Friday specials but don't expect much

Apple has sent out emails and posted a page teasing a Black Friday sale on November 26, 2010. If history is any guide the Black Friday deals at your local Apple Store won't be that spectacular. Last year's Black Friday sale consisted of MacBook Pro models reduced by $101, a slight discount on the iPod touch, the nano and Apple TV plus a decent discount on the iMac. I wouldn't expect the already low-cost new Apple TV to be discounted this year, but a push to sell new iPods would definitely make sense -- they make terrific presents. The Dev-Team Blog was just updated with a new redsn0w version 0.9.6b4 jailbreak (based on Geohot's Limera1n bootrom exploit) for iOS 4.2.1. Unfortunately, iPhone 4, iPad, and newer iPhone 3GS and iPod touch owners won't find jailbreaking as easy as navigating to a website -- the 4.2.1 jailbreak is currently "tethered" so you'll have to reattach to a PC or Mac to boot into a jailbroken state each time your device loses power or needs a reboot. Those of you who rely on ultrasn0w unlock should hold off for now. Good advice for anyone not comfortable

Die seit einigen Jahren verfügbaren Blu-ray-Laufwerke für PCs sind noch immer die Ausnahme. Laut einem Bericht der DigiTimes macht die Anzahl der Laufwerke mit dem violetten Laser in diesem Jahr bei den beiden größten taiwanischen Laufwerks-Herstellern nur 1,5 Prozent (1,17 Millionen) aus, 2009 war es ein Prozent.

Fifth Ave. Apple Store recreated in Minecraft

The Minecraft Mac was cute and all, but if you think that was the pinnacle of Mac-related creations in Minecraft, you're underestimating our readership. Reader Simon sent along this set of Flickr pictures, which shows off an entire recreation of the Fifth Avenue Apple Store, complete with glass cube on top and a store full of products down below. Unfortunately, there's no way to model out iPads or iPhones in Minecraft, so there's just a whole bunch of what looks like Mac minis on sale. But then again, that sounds like a great store, too. World of Goo coming to iPad, Gunstar Heroes out now

Here are two good pieces of news for iOS gamers. First up, World of Goo, the practically classic indie game that has you building little structures out of blobs of goo, is headed to the App Store just as soon as Apple approves the app for iPad. The app will feature one-screen multiplayer, with up to 11 fingers building up and drawing goo paths out on the screen.
