Apple devices seen everywhere at the LA Auto Show
Tech blog Cosby Sweaters noticed something interesting at the recent LA Auto Show: Apple was there in force. Not officially -- there is no iCar being sold just yet. But iPads and iMacs were used for a surprising amount of the kiosk displays by manufacturers. Lexus even had a 15-iPod touch display (as seen above) set up to demonstrate features and functions of its new cars.
When it comes to functionality, security, and usability, Apple's devices are actually relatively cheap to set up, create as a kiosk and then use at a show. This is probably far from the last time we'll see iPod touches and iPads used in this way at conventions.

Angry Birds hits 10 million iPhone downloads, coming to gaming consoles
Angry Birds creator Rovio has announced that the game has fetched a whopping 36 million downloads so far, including ten million paid downloads on the iOS platform alone. Those are some pretty incredible numbers -- there's no question at all that Angry Birds is as legendary an app on the iPhone as they come. In the larger mobile picture, Rovio still has a way to go -- the company itself wants to do 100 million downloads on the Android platform (where the game is a free download, and allows for premium purchases within the app), and even then will have to go a bit further to match up with Tetris' 100 million paid downloads on all mobile platforms.

Richard Branson launching Project magazine for iPad
It must be "iPad publishing by billionaires" week but I think they forgot to notify me so I could prepare my own app. British entrepreneur Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Atlantic airlines and the burgeoning commercial space travel program Virgin Galactic, will formally announce next Tuesday that he is releasing an iPad-specific digital magazine named "Project." ChangeWave study sees leap in MacBook interest
A surge in MacBook demand is responsible for an overall increase in notebook interest, a new ChangeWave Research survey proposes. Of a group of 2,812 Americans, 10 percent said they were planning to buy a notebook in the next 90 days. The figure is two points higher than last month, and said to match the highest level in a ChangeWave survey in three years.

Multitasking on your iPad: a quick guide
iOS 4.2 finally introduced multitasking to the iPad, boosting its usefulness significantly. Here's a brief overview of how it works and what you can expect from this exciting new feature.
The Multitask Bar
The iOS keeps a running tally of recently-used apps for you and displays them in the Multitask Bar. To bring it up, just double-tap the iPad's home button as you do on the iPhone. The main screen slides out of the way to reveal the list. There are two main differences between the Multitask Bar on the iPad and the iPhone.
First, the iPad lists the six most recently-used apps while in portrait orientation and seven while in landscape. The iPhone always lists four, regardless of orientation. Also,

Google unlikely to have music store up by holidays
Google's music service is still facing troubled negotiations that will probably push its launch into 2011, according to purported insider tips on Wednesday. A conventional per-track deal may be mostly settled, but Google's insistence on a widely rumored online locker for music is still triggering opposition. Labels still want additional payment for artists, the New York Post's contacts claimed, but also note that Google refuses to separate the locker from the regular store.

iPad patent suggests landscape dock connector ... again
We've heard about this before, but a new patent illustration hints again at a second dock in a future version of the iPad, one that will enable you to both charge and sync your iPad from a landscape setup. Honestly, it seems a little redundant to have two dock connectors on there, since you'll never use more than one at a time anyway.

Kids 6-12 want iPads and iPod touches, survey says
Go figure -- this holiday season, kids want the priciest, hottest consumer electronics going. That's according to a new Nielsen survey, which says that across the demographic of kids 6-12, the iPad is the hottest gift in town, with 31 percent angling for a future purchase of Apple's tablet. The iPod touch is another big gift want as well, topping both the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP this year. And the iPhone is also on the list, with 20 percent of those polled hoping to see a smartphone under the tree.

iPhone-Kunden laut Umfrage am zufriedensten
Keine besondere Überraschung für Apple-Fans bringt heute das Ergebnis einer Umfrage des US-Marktforschungsunternehmens ChangeWave an den Tag. Issuu abandons iOS app after three rejections
Document and publishing service Issuu has abandoned plans to launch an iOS app, following a third rejection by Apple, according to founder Martin Ferro-Thomsen. "Based on the latest rejection we donít think itís realistic that we can get it approved," he says. "We would have to make some changes weíre not comfortable with. Virgin chief to launch Project magazine for iPads next week
Virgin founder Richard Branson today sent out invites to a launch event for an iPad-specific magazine on November 30. Rogers mulls charging extra for data quality on smartphones
Canadian carrier Rogers is considering a plan that would let it charge extra to give quality 3G service in the event its cell towers are overloaded, Electronista readers have learned. The company is asking some customers how they would react to a feature, tentatively called the Data Priority Service, that would prioritize a subscriber's data packets over others for a monthly fee. It would help guarantee important or real-time data that would otherwise be choked off, the company said.

Iceland Express adds iPad to in-flight options
Iceland Express says it is now offering iPads as a form of in-flight entertainment. The rental option costs $13, £9 or 1,500 ISK per flight. The airline is only currently offering tablets on transatlantic trips, but says it plans to offer them on all aircraft within the next few months.

U.S. ITC will investigate Apple's patent infringement claims of Motorola
Just about a month after Apple filed patent complaints against Motorola, Bloomberg reports that the U.S. International Trade Commission is set to review the claim.
Apple's complaints were filed on October 29, just a few days after Motorola sued Apple over 18 alleged patent infringements on October 6. In this case, it will be the ITC's job to determine if Motorola is indeed infringing on Apple's patents. It must also decide whether to block the import of Motorola phones made overseas running Google's Android OS.

Nokia hires MS, Verizon veteran to revive its marketing
Nokia today left its comfortable area to bring on a new Chief Marketing Officer as part of its restructuring efforts. iPad keyboard has broken shift-drag capitalization under iOS 4.2.1
The iOS 4.2.1 update for my iPad brought many welcome features -- and one unwelcome one. Since upgrading, I have found myself unable to use the handy shift-drag trick to type capitals. iOS 4.2 CoreMIDI apps begin to arrive on the App Store
When we got word a few weeks ago that Apple was introducing CoreMIDI into iOS 4.2, our minds began to ponder the new possibilities it would present. Since the release of iOS 4.2, however, with all the buzz surrounding the latest iOS software update, we forgot all about CoreMIDI. And that's because we hadn't seen any apps on the App Store taking advantage of it, until now.
Apple has now begun to approve apps for the App Store that take advantage of the CoreMIDI API. Interestingly enough, one of the first apps to take advantage of CoreMIDI isn't a music app at all.

Sony working on same-screen 3D multiplayer, holographics for PS3?
Don't go knockin' Sony for resting on its laurels. The company that has spearheaded the 3D gaming push (NVIDIA notwithstanding) is apparently not even close to finished, with SCEE studio director Mick Hocking taking the time to get our juices flowing in an interview with Develop. Google may ship in-house Chrome OS netbook by December
Google's determination to have Chrome OS out this year should include a limited hardware release under its own name based on a rumor this afternoon. Similar to the approach taken late last year for the Nexus One, the PC would be limited to "friends and family" willing to try the beta version of Chrome OS, according to Engadget. Sources reportedly corroborated most of a recent production rumor, where Inventec would build about 75,000 units.

11 percent likely to buy iPad by February, says NPD
Some 11 percent of people surveyed are likely to buy an iPad by February, says the NPD Group. The tablet is expected to be a popular gift during the holidays, particularly as Apple has allowed sales to branch out to several major retail chains. The NPD figure is thought to represent high demand, and also appears to reveal no concern for an iPad refresh anticipated early next year.

SlingPlayer for iPad now available
Just a week after the teaser video was released, SlingPlayer for iPad (US$29.99) is officially available. This app lets you stream anything that comes from your Slingbox SOLO, PRO, or PRO-HD to and iPad via Wi-Fi or 3G. Thirty bucks is kind of high, and the app isn't universal so you're looking at sixty bucks if you want to toss an iPhone into the mix.
Note that the Slingbox Classic, AV, and TUNER are not supported for use with SlingPlayer Mobile. If you own one of those you're not completely out of luck; you can take advantage of an upgrade offer to save $50 on a new Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD.

RIM encountered a symbolic loss today as longstanding BlackBerry app UberTwitter reached the iPhone. Ubertwitter hits iPhone
Because we don't have enough Twitter clients for the iPhone, ÜberTwitter is now available for the device. It's been extremely popular for BlackBerry users for some time, and now iPhone users can get a taste of that ÜberTwitter goodness. It offers the features you'd expect, like direct messages, retweeting, link shortening, etc.
What's new is what they're calling "ÜberView," which lets you view information shared in a tweet, like a link or a photo, without leaving the app or opening a new window. To try it out, either tap the link or tilt the iPhone on its side. That forces a new pane to open next to the stream of tweets.

FCC delays December meeting a week to settle on neutrality
The FCC late Tuesday said it would institute an unusual delay its monthly meeting in December, pushing it back a week from December 15 to 21. Agency officials wouldn't explain the setback, but it's believed to be an attempt to buy time for a deal or proposal touching on network neutrality. An agenda would have had to be ready this week without the delay.

China Unicom, Telstra struggling with Chinese iPhone demand
Carriers serving Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland are having a difficult time dealing with the country's iPhone 4 demand, a report suggests. Apple I sells for $210K at Christie's auction in London
One of the first Apple computers ever made, the Apple I, has been sold at a Christie's auction in London on Tuesday. The Apple I, one of only 200 of its kind to have been made, was won by the Italian businessman and private collector Marco Boglione for $210,000.
The Apple I was released in 1976 and originally sold for $666.66.
The computer came with its original packaging, a signed sales letter from co-founder and current CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, as well as an autographed letter by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who was present at the auction. Wozniak said of the Apple I, "It really was an important step, [even though] I didn't feel that way when I designed it." Wozniak added, "I'm very delighted for the gentleman who purchased it."

Photofast AP1000 brings AirPlay audio streaming to your car
Now that iOS 4.2 and AirPlay are officially available for our Apple portable devices, we're starting to see third-party devices that can take advantage of the new capability. Among the first of those is the AP1000 from Japan's PhotoFast. The AP1000 is a Wi-Fi host that gets wired into a car audio system to receive AirPlay streams.

Acer steigt mit Android in den Tablet-Markt ein

Firemint's Flight Control has long been one of my favorite iPhone games; it was one of the first apps I bought. When I first heard the game was being ported to the Mac, I wondered how well the game's control scheme would work. LG preps 240Hz IPS-based LCD for desktops
LG Display today unveiled a new 23-inch IPS LCD that can refresh at 240Hz. A combination of a fast-updating 120Hz panel with a rapidly flashing scanning backlight lets it produce an update speed normally reserved for much larger TV sets. A copper bus line helps keep the display updating quickly, at 8ms, while still giving the deep color and wide viewing angles inherent to IPS.

Android data theft hole fixed in 2.3, leaves most vulnerable
A recently discovered significant data exploit in Android might only be patched for a handful of devices. The attack found by Thomas Cannon uses a malicious website to deliver a payload to the user's SD card slot and can use JavaScript to automatically access and possibly forward information along from locally stored files. Although it needs to know the file name, Android's file structure could let it reach whole photo libraries, system files and apps.

SEC targets analysts over channel checks
The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating whether channel and supply chain checks represent a form of insider trading, says the Wall Street Journal. Analysts regularly talk to sources with knowledge of how many units a company may have sold, or where the firm's production is headed. The problem, the SEC suggests, is that some of these sources may have an obligation to protect the information being divulged.

Mac shipments are outpacing the market 3 to 1
An interesting article over at CNN talks about the growth of Mac inside the worldwide market for personal computers. The original report was created by Charlie Wolf, who pointed out that Apple's growth is three times that of the overall, worldwide market for computers. The article itself is concerned that Wolf might have been too fair to Apple, since Macs only represent about 5% of that total market in the last quarter.

Intel has started full production of its Oak Trail platform for Atom-based tablets, insiders said Wednesday. The first processor to ship in the Atom Z600 series should be a Z670 running at an unknown clock speed with one Oak Trail chipset, SM35, to keep it running. Criminals constructing ATM skimmers from DAPs
A recent article from Brian Krebs highlights a new trend in ATM skimmers: by using parts from cut-rate audio players and spy cams, criminals are able to construct something called an audio skimmer that records the data from the magnetic strip for later playback. SAP muss Rekordzahlung an Oracle leisten

Acer stellt Doppelbildschirm-Falttablet Iconia vor
Acer hat eine Mischung aus Tablet und Notebook mit zwei berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirmen zum Ausklappen vorgestellt. Das dem Toshiba Libretto W105 ähnelnde, aber mit 14 Zoll Displaydiagonale deutlich größere Gerät heißt Iconia. Seine beiden Bildschirme lösen 1366 mal 768 Pixel auf.

UberTwitter kommt aufs iPhone

UberTwitter allein ist für täglich etwa zehn Millionen Tweets von BlackBerry-Usern verantwortlich, nun hat es den Weg auch aufs iPhone geschafft. Die Macher von UberTwitter begründen das mit der "wachsenden Dominanz" der Plattform und stellen ihre Open Beta gratis in den App Store. Alleinstellungsmerkmal soll ein Feature namens UberView sein, mit dem man auch Links in den Tweets öffnen kann, ohne die App zu verlassen oder ein neues Fenster zu öffnen. Noch gibt es ein paar Bugs, aber die fertige Version soll Mitte Dezember online gehen und dann der offiziellen Twitter App Konkurrenz machen.

Exploit-Code für ungepatchte Stuxnet-Lücke veröffentlicht
Ein Hacker namens "WebDEVil" hat im Internet Beispielcode für einen Exploit veröffentlicht, der eine ungepatchte Windows-Lücke ausnutzt. Die Anfälligkeit in der Windows-Aufgabenplanung wird auch von der Stuxnet-Malware verwendet. Acers gestern in New York vorgestelltes Iconia ist mit seinen zwei Screens schon etwas Besonderes: beide sind Multitouch-kompatibel, der untere dient gleichzeitig als Tastatur und Trackpad. Mit fünf Fingern gleichzeitig wird eine Art Jogwheel-Widget aufgerufen, das diverse Aktionen anbietet und natürlich kann man den unteren Screen auch als Tastatur benutzen. LightFrame photo-framing software updated to 2.0
LightFrame, a drag-and-drop oriented picture framing application, has been updated to v2, completely overhauling the rendering engine for improved performance, along with introducing Frame Stacks and a new user interface. The new version, which now requires 10.6 or higher, also includes matte cardboard and fabric textures along with new and improved effects. The program uses a combination of preset frames, borders, materials and brushes to create unique frames for photographs or other images that can be exported in a variety of standard formats.

Nielsen: 31 percent of kids want an iPad, other stuff
Hey look, a chart with the iPad on top. Aren't statistics fun? And yet, this chart may not mean quite what you think it does. The Nielsen Company presented a cadre of individuals with a list of nice, shiny gadgets and let them cross off anything and everything they'd like to buy in the next six months, and 31 percent of kids 6-12 picked the iPad as one of them. That doesn't mean these youngsters wanted the iPad any more than a game console, mind you, it just means more of them picked the tablet than any other single game console on the list. Also, it turns out that the iPad was the only tablet PC available, so it could well ave served as a proxy vote for other slates --

Analyst: Mac growth outpaces industry 3:1
A new report from Charlie Wolf, analyst at Needham & Company, indicates that Apple is enjoying unprecedented success in its Mac business, with triple the growth rate seen by the rest of the industry. Needham estimates the industry has a whole grew 9.7 percent in the September quarter, while Apple saw 28.5 percent growth. More significantly, the Mac became the dollar-share leader in the US home market, with a 29.4 percent dollar share.

RIM pulls BlackBerry app Kik while Apple, Google OK
RIM stirred controversy today when it pulled the real-time texting app Kik from BlackBerry App World. The company both removed the app and disabled push services for having "breached contractual obligations" but without saying what those were. Both its own issues and the "broad scope" of customer worries demanded action, RIM claimed.

St. Clair expands patent infringement claims against Apple
St. Clair Intellectual Property Consultants has filed yet another lawsuit accusing Apple of infringing several tech patents. The lawsuit lists seven patents relating to computer bus systems, power management, power switching, activity monitors, power consumption reduction, and processor functions.

50 year-old remote-controlled robot made from scrap parts makes a dramatic, beautiful comeback
This is George. He's a six-foot tall robot handmade from the aluminum scraps of a crashed bomber in 1950. George is remote controlled, and was built by Tony Sale, the same man who recently resurrected the nearly forgotten robotic darling from the storage shed where he's spent the last 45 years or so. Some oil and batteries were all it took to get George up and walking again, and he'll now have a permanent home at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire, England. And that's the next museum we'll be visiting, because we cannot get enough of this giant. Tear-inducing video is after the break.

HTC, Samsung deal with patent firm to steel vs. Apple, more
HTC today joined earlier sign-up Samsung in reaching a deal with Intellectual Ventures in a move meant to gird itself against patent lawsuits from rival smartphone makers. The agreements give both companies access to 30,000 patents and other intellectual property assets to "reduce [the] risk of litigation." Neither phone designer disclosed the terms, which for Samsung were reached last week.

The US Patent Office awarded Apple a range of patents today, including ones for iCal and iChat, the design of the iPhone 4 and iPad, the Point-of-Sale system used in Apple Stores, multi-touch gestures and a method for applying liquid metalonto semiconductor dies or cooling devices to increase their ability to disperse heat.

AT&T-branded BlackBerry Bold 9780 spotted by way of eBay

Mac sales growth continues to surge ahead of PCs 3 to 1
In a pattern that has become very familiar to watchers of the computer market in the last few years, sales of Macs have grown at three times the rate of computers powered by other operating systems. According to a report issued by IDC, Apple computer sales jumped 28.5 percent in the July-September 2010 quarter compared to the same period in 2009. Sales of other personal computers only grew by 9.7% in the same period.

Hands on: AirPlay for audio streaming in depth
My colleague Mike Rose has already taken a long look at video streaming via AirPlay and found it a rather mixed bag. Although it works well as far as it goes, it doesn't support non-Apple apps -- even video streaming ones such as Netflix -- and can't even manage to stream video footage shot on an iPhone from the iPhone to an Apple TV. Meanwhile, Victor Agreda wasn't at all impressed that AirPlay doesn't offer the ability to stream his iTunes library to an iOS device.

HTC and Samsung license entire Intellectual Ventures patent portfolio, gear up for war
Looks like HTC and Samsung are taking some aggressive steps to protect themselves from Android patent litigation -- in the past week both companies have entered into long-term patent licensing agreements with Nathan Myhrvold's Intellectual Ventures. RIM: Kik was pulled from App World over 'breached contractual obligations'
Looks like RIM has made a final decision on the Kik situation after having pulled the wildly popular upstart instant messaging app from the BlackBerry App World a few days ago -- and for current and hopeful Kik users, the news isn't good (bold added by us):

Rare Apple I computer sold at auction: $174,000
A rare Apple I computer assembled by Steve Wozniak -- of which only around 50 are thought to exist -- has sold at Christie's auction house for £133,250 ($213,600), slightly below what the company had seen as the high end of its estimate but nonetheless a record price for the machine. Wozniak himself was on hand to autograph the machine for the winning bidder, and called the original Apple "an important step" that put "the whole formula [for how personal computer work] out there for the world to see."

iPhone demand in China still exceeds supply
We've heard some crazy stories out of China about the call for Apple products there, both that Apple is trying to increase supply as quickly as possible, and that they're still not living up to the demand. And here's more news that Apple is racing, and probably failing, to keep up with all of the demand there. China Unicom says that Apple is still falling short of orders in that country. So far, 600,000 iPhone 4s have been ordered, but there's no word on how many of those have been delivered yet.

Kids below 12 want iPad over PCs, Nintendo DS
Children 12 and under want an iPad even more than the game consoles that have almost always topped their lists for several years, Nielsen said today. About 31 percent of those aged six to 12 wanted an iPad, trumping both computers and the iPod touch at 29 percent each. Nintendo's DS line was stopped at 25 percent, while the PSP was well behind at just 14 percent.
