iPads now helping food charity feed the hungry
Just last week we wrote about iPads being given out to doctors in Australia, and now we are seeing another hospitality-based use for them -- tracking food donations and pickups for Melbourne's FareShare food charity.
An iPad app developed by volunteers and employees of FareShare acts as a data-entry point for their drivers, who enter the amount and ingredients of donated food they have collected on their routes. This information is then accessed by the chefs who can plan their meals according to what food will be arriving back at th

Barnes and Noble Nook firmware version 1.5 now available
Barnes and Noble's just made version 1.5 of its Nook e-reader's firmware available. What can Nook owners expect from this latest upgrade? Well, the company says it boasts improved page refresh rates about 50 percent faster than the previous version -- which is good news as we found it to be slower than its competitors. MacTech Boot Camp gives IT Mac mavens pre-Macworld day of workshops
Hopefully, if you're headed out to Macworld Expo next year, you've already made some hotel and air travel plans, as reservations in San Francisco are already filling up if not filled up completely. FAA gives SpaceX the first-ever commercial license for spacecraft reentry
Well, SpaceX just scored a huge milestone in space travel for the proletariat: we get to come back now. The FAA just gave SpaceX's Dragon capsule a reentry license, paving the way for it to make round trips to the International Space Station and eventually even take people up there. NASA, who already has some hefty contracts with SpaceX for launches, has congratulated SpaceX over Twitter on the good news, though we're sure the few billion dollars in future business speaks volumes already. Bislang 600.000 verkaufte Galaxy Tabs

iPhone 4.2 how-to: Setting custom SMS alert tones
One of the less-heralded new features in iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone is the addition of a slew of new SMS message tones, along with the ability to assign text tones to particular contacts. The expansion of choice is welcome, and I hate to look gift text tones in the mouth, but there are still some frustrations in the mix.

Kinect lightsaber, and other inevitable milestones for the open-source robot eye (video)
What, you didn't think the Kinect open source community would just take a break for the weekend, did you? Microsoft certainly wouldn't want that, and after seeing how much shadow puppetry warmed our hearts, we wouldn't want it either! Thankfully, someone in this world can now track a wooden stick to emulate a lightsaber in real time, bringing one classic meme that much closer to actuality (and the promised Star Wars Kinect game not even parsec closer to release).

Just in case you missed it, here's a resolution to the whole question of where those iPads at TJ Maxx came from. A high tech tablet isn't really the usual fare for the discount clothing retailer, and Steve Jobs himself confirmed that the chain wasn't an "authorized reseller" of Apple's magical, revolutionary device. But TJ Maxx says in an official statement that it has its ways: "Earlier this week, a small number of T.J.Maxx and Marshalls stores received a very limited quantity of first quality electronic tablets that were sourced from a retailer," the chain tells Fortune.

Apple retro-fitting iPhone 4s with tamper-proof torx screws
Apple has begun retro-fitting iPhone 4s brought in for service with proprietary torx screws, meant to keep customers out. Similar to those used to keep the new MacBook Air sealed, these screws are of Apple's own design and send a clear message: Do not enter.
What would prompt such a move? No doubt the cottage industry of after-market conversion kits of white casing parts has something to do with it. The anti-tampering screws are showing up on recently-purchased iPhone 4s as well.

Samsung says it's sold 600,000 Galaxy Tabs worldwide
Samsung said it expected to sell a million Galaxy Tabs this year, and it looks like it may not be far off that mark, if it doesn't exceed it -- the company has apparently told The Korea Herald that it's sold 600,000 of the tablets worldwide so far, less than a month after launch. That includes 30,000 units sold in Korea since its November 14th launch there, but Samsung doesn't seem to be dishing out specific numbers for the rest of the world just yet. UK iPad subsidy plan to be announced later today
Everything Everywhere is the UK's largest mobile network operator, and it owns the UK telecom brands Orange UK and T-Mobile UK. According to Marketing Week, the two telecom brands are expected to issue a formal announcement on November 22 that they will sell the iPad at their dual-branded stores. iPad will hit Korea on November 30
Earlier this month we reported the iPad had cleared governmental hurdles in Korea and was about to begin taking pre-orders. Today, Electronista reports that over 60,000 pre-orders for the iPad have been taken. KT Corp. is offering the iPad in Korea with a subsidy if you sign up for their data service, bringing the 16GB version to less than US$200. You can still buy a Wi-Fi model without a subsidy for around US$559.
Competitor SK Telecom, meanwhile is selling the Galaxy Tab with some success,

Amazon releases Price Checker app just in time for holiday shopping
Amazon has released Price Checker, a free app that allows you to do some comparison shopping. You start by saying the name of your target product, scanning its bar code, typing its name or snapping a photo. You'll get several results; tap one to see who's offering it with prices and shipping costs listed. Of course Amazon hopes it has the lowest price, but it doesn't always win.
I tried the app in a local store and found the bar code scanning and voice recognition worked well. I took a picture of some DVDs and the app figured out what the movie was and offered meaningful price comparisons to other retailers.

Nicht ganz aus Eis - weitere Komponenten sind ein Projektor und eine Reihe Nahinfrarot-Kameras, die mit einem PC verbunden sind - aber der Bildschirm selbst ist aus Eis. Wozu das gut sein soll? Nokia selbst spricht von einem "spielerischen Experiment", welches zeige, dass "interaktive Computer-Interfaces nun überall gebaut werden können". It only makes sense: the AirPlay video streaming features of iOS 4.2 on the iPad are all well and good, but there's no way to use them effectively if the Apple TV doesn't get a version bump along with the mobile devices. Apple hat vor wenigen Minuten eine neue MobileMe Startseite online gestellt.Sie symbolisiert durch einen Sparks-Effekt die Daten,die über die Wolke (MobileMe) zu allen i-Devices synchronisiert werden.Momentan funktionieren die einzelnen MobileMe Services wie Mail, Kalender und FindMyiPhone nicht mehr, da Apple sie gerade auf Veröffentlichung von iOS 4.2 vorbereitet.Benutzbar wird die Seite wohl erst wieder wenn iOS 4.2 veröffentlicht wurde, und damit auch die Find My iPhone-Funktion für alle iOS 4.2 Devices kostenlos zu benutzen ist.Schön anzusehen ist auf der neuen MobileMe Startseite auch der MouseOver Effekt mit dem man die "Datenströme" aus der MobileMe Wolke ablenken kann. :-)

Von seinem jüngsten Besuch in Samsungs Heimat Südkorea hat Dmitri Medvedev offensichtlich ein Galaxy Tab mit nach Moskau genommen. Die Kamera des Samsung-Tablets ist beim russischen Präsidenten glatt durchgefallen, soviel ist klar, denn das Urteil auf seinem offiziellen Twitter-Account fällt deutlich und damit für ein Staatoberhaupt ziemlich undiplomatisch aus: "Winter kommt nach Moskau. News: KT to launch iPad in Korea on Nov. 30
Korean iPhone carrier KT has announced that it will launch the iPad on November 30. The Korea Times reports that KT will offer all six models of the iPad, but that iPad 3G models will be available on a subsidized basis, with the 16GB 3G model selling for the equivalent of $345 with a two-year contract for 2GB of data per month. KT said it has received 60,000 pre-orders in the past week; it expects to sell 200,000 iPads this year.

iWork suite gains iOS 4.2 support on iPad
The iWork productivity suite for iPad is receiving significant upgrades to coincide with the release of iOS 4.2, Macworld reports. Most significantly, the three iWork tools (Numbers, Keynotes, and Pages) will support multitasking on the iPad.
Multitasking in 4.2 will already be familiar to many iPhone users. When you switch away from one of the iWork applications, the iPad will save the state of your work in iWork. When you come back to that application later, you'll be able to resume right where you left off.

Houston will be home to America's largest car charging network, identity crisis

As more people get fed up with the poor performance and security flaws of Adobe's Flash Player, they are uninstalling the Flash plug-in from their computers. Verizon launching LTE network in December 2010 (video)
Verizon's been talking details on LTE deployment for some time now, but even at CTIA earlier in the year, the carrier insisted that it would be the first half of 2011 before the next-gen network was active in the US of A. Now, it looks as if the engineers have been working triple-time in order to get Long Term Evolution live in the States under Big Red's branding, as a new VZW commercial (embedded after the break) has affirmed that the first LTE waves will go public here in December 2010. TiVo outs iPad remote app for Premiere DVRs
TiVo this morning unveiled a new iPad remote control app (not yet ready) for its Premiere DVR boxes. The app provides full control over all of the features of the set-top, including a direct replication of TiVo's hardware remote controls if needed, a program guide and interfaces for both Amazon VOD and Netflix. Steve Jobs dislikes buttons, which is why one of the most premier gaming devices in the world has no tactile feedback whatsoever. But there's still a call for finding buttons on the screen by feel alone, and Tactile+Plus is designed to let you do just that. It's a little plastic sticker sheet that you can place on your iPhone or iPod touch's touchscreen, and it will provide touchable, raised bumps where buttons go in certain games. According to Macworld, Apple will release iOS 4.2 to eager customers at 10:00 a.m. PST today. The much-anticipated update was supposedly delayed several days ago due to Wi-Fi issues with the iPad. A new gold master was subsequently released to developers and it would appear that the rest of us will get the final version within a few hours.

Verizon triples FiOS speeds to 150Mbps
Verizon today added an ultimate 150Mbps tier to its FiOS fiber optic Internet access. The speed is three times the previous 50Mbps peak and also boosts the upload speed from 20Mbps to 35Mbps. Orange set to offer 3G iPad on contract in UK, £200 price rumored
Orange has just dropped a rather enigmatic note in our inbox letting us know that it plans to offer Apple's 3G iPad on "one of [its] great new plans," resulting in what the company promises will be "more affordable prices." Current rumors making the rounds place that expenditure at the £200 ($320) mark, should you be willing to commit to a two-year data plan to go with your 10-inch tablet. TiVo Premiere UI gets a shot in the arm with iPad remote control

South Korean carrier KT today said it would sell the iPad on November 30. Bundesregierung setzt ELENA vorerst aus
Der Koalitionsausschuss von CDU/CSU und FDP hat beschlossen, den Start der nächsten Phase des elektronischen Entgeltnachweises (ELENA) um zwei Jahre zu verschieben. Die durch ELENA gesammelten Daten sollen - wenn überhaupt - nun frühestens ab dem 1. Januar 2014 an Sozialbehörden übermittelt werden, wie Regierungssprecher Steffen Seibert nach Angaben der Nachrichtenagentur AFP in Berlin mitteilte. Sophos Mac anti-virus report sparks controversy
Sophos has released its first report for its free Mac anti-virus software. The reports submitted from 50 000 users indicates that Macs are vulnerable to a range of potential threats, largely from Java-based cross-platform attacks and which were found in the internet cache of users hit by a drive-by-attack. Video: Audi Quattro bezwingt den Pike Peak, kein Fahrer weit und breit

156 Kurven muss man auf der Bergstraße von Pike Peak überwinden, ein Audi Quattro hat die jetzt ohne Fahrer zustande bekommen. Schon im September fand dieser Versuch statt, Audi jedoch hat das nicht unmittelbar an die große Glocke gehangen, weil währenddessen ein Helikopter-Pilot, der die Fahrt filmen sollte, einen Unfall hatte. Der ist mittlerweile wieder wohl auf und so können wir jetzt die Bilder der Fahrt sehen. Nach dem Break wartet das Video. Is the Apollo News Reader defunct?
I liked the Apollo New Reader for iPad. It allowed you to read RSS feeds full screen, something that the Pulse news reader doesn't do. Another advantage was that it could usually play video from within the app. Alas, good things come to an end; the Apollo News Reader is no longer listed in the App Store, and the freshest stories are 6 days old. Verizon runs 4G TV ad, commits to December launch
Verizon tonight ran the first TV ad (below) for its promised LTE-based 4G network with a more definitive plan for a December launch window.
