Borderlands Game of the Year edition for Mac gets a release date
2K Games has announced that the Game of the Year edition of the great "Diablo shooter" game Borderlands is on its way to the Mac. It'll be out on December 3rd, and like other versions of the special edition, the game will include all of the title's downloadable content packs, including The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx and Claptrap's New Robot Revolution. All that gaming for just US$49.95, running natively on our favorite platform -- pretty sweet.
I was a huge fan of Borderlands when it came out last year -- you'll probably need to enjoy the FPS genre to really get into it,

Amazon introduces Kindle book gifting just in time for the holidays
It's not the Kindle lending feature that Amazon has in the works, but the company has just rolled out another fairly big Kindle feature for those feeling a bit generous this holiday season. That comes in the form of a new "give as a gift" option now present on Amazon.com, which will let you send an e-book to anyone with an email address, who can then read it on the Kindle-friendly device of their choice (or an actual Kindle, of course). As Amazon is all too happy to point out, it's the first major bookseller to offer such a service, but we've got to guess it won't

Sony Ericsson averts WP7, Android may pass iPhone in France
Sony Ericsson is currently passing on Windows Phone 7 because it doesn't give enough control, the company's French CEO Pierre Perron said today. In a talk with Les Echos, he acknowledged that his company was talking with Microsoft about Windows Phone 7 but that it liked the customization of Android more. Google's OS allowed for "more product differentiation" in software where Microsoft's insistence on a consistent interface for WP7 would force Sony Ericsson to compete mostly on phone quality and price.

Briefly: Leopard Security Guide, FileWave to add iOS support
Security Generation has released a new security guide for Mac users. The guide, which is currently available online for free, includes five different sections: Creating and Managing Accounts, Networking and Services, Security, FileVault and Firewall, Privacy, and Securing Safari. A sixth chapter, Additional Security, is also in the works and will be uploaded in the coming weeks. A Securing Leopard Checklist has also been made available, allowing users to document which changes they decide to implement.

Magellan updates RoadMate with free traffic and iOS 4 support
It was almost exactly a year ago that I reviewed the first version of the Magellan RoadMate app for the iPhone. Over the last several months the price has dropped, and features have been added.
In the latest update of the app, released this week, RoadMate USA now fully supports multitasking and fast application switching. If you are listening to music, it fades it for voice announcements, and voice guidance continues if you switch to another app. There is also an option to pause audio, which is nice if you're listening to an audio book and the voice guidance needs to interrupt.

Altec Lansing Muzx Ultra MZX606 earbuds review
We've always had a soft spot for Altec Lansing's wide array of speaker docks -- these guys have been embedded in that space for an awfully long time, and the quality has always seemed up to snuff in our eyes. Lawsuit docs show Dell told staff to keep PC flaws secret
More documents have been unsealed in a lawsuit over defective Dell workstations that have revealed the company directly told staff to hide the extent of the problems. Presentations from 2003 to 2005, and even sometime later, told workers to not only avoid telling customers "proactively" about capacitor problems with Optiplex workstations but to "emphasize uncertainty" and cloud the issue. Staff who questioned the wisdom of replacing broken systems with known flawed parts were told that this strategy, rather than a permanent fix, was ultimately the most helpful.

TUAW interview: SAP CIO Oliver Bussmann on iPads in enterprise
A while ago SAP's CIO Oliver Bussmann made some waves in the Apple news-o-sphere by commenting that SAP was to deploy several thousand iPads within the company. I spoke to Mr. Bussmann this week to discover that his employees are now using over 2,000 iPads at SAP and they have plans to buy many more.
However, the iPad is not the only tablet in SAP's sights. As Mr. Bussmann explained, the possibilities of thin-client, fast-startup, tablet-form computing devices are enough for SAP to consider the Galaxy Tab, the PlayBook and possibly any Android tablet that meets their needs and specifications.

webOS 2.0 coming to 'all' Palm devices in the coming months
We're hoping he wasn't speaking out of turn here, but for what it's worth, Palm developer advocate Josh Marinacci has said on stage at webOS Developer Days today in New York that webOS 2.0 will be coming to "all" Palm devices in "the coming months." Sony Ericsson France CEO says Windows Phone 7 handsets aren't likely, neither is a tablet

RIM's Jim Balsillie says 'you don't need an app for the web,' rejects Apple's appification of the internet

Sanyo intros four new portable projectors
Sanyo has expanded its line of projectors with four new portable models geared for education and business use. Each of the projectors features long-life lamps claimed to run for approximately 6,000 hours, while the high-efficiency filters are said to last approximately 5,500 hours before requiring replacement.

iAd highlighted in new Apple video
Apple has updated its iAd advertising site with a show-reel showcasing some of the early advertisement adopters. Of course the best of the best have been selected, and all of the campaigns featured look great. We've only seen a few here at TUAW, like the Nissan Leaf ad at pictured at right, but those were memorable.
Releasing this video is a good move on Apple's part, especially as iAd begins to launch internationally. It's an opportunity to show off some choice examples and gives a little reward to the program's early adopters.

News: Doom creator says iPad more powerful than Wii
Doom co-creator and co-founder of iD Software John Carmack has said that the iPad is more capable graphically than the Nintendo Wii. Verizon's Droid lineup available at Amazon for a penny per handset with no activation fee
Yeah, retailers are always undercutting carrier pricing, sometimes pretty dramatically, but Amazon's taking things to the limit this weekend. Google to scrub Street View Wi-Fi data in UK
UK deputy information commissioner David Smith today said that Google had agreed to delete Wi-Fi data collected by its Street View cars. The search firm would purge the data in the next nine months and would avoid threatened legal action since the data remained in Google's hands. There was no reason to fine the company, Smith told the BBC.

iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken, compatible Cydia store ready
Redmond Pie reports today that iOS 4.2.1 has been successfully jailbroken, and that a compatible version of Cydia will be available as soon as 4.2.1 reaches the public. This build of iOS can be jailbroken with Redsn0w version 0.9.6b2, the same used with iOS 4.1.

Amazon opens up Kindle book gifting
Amazon has announced that customers are now able to give Kindle books as gifts to anyone with an e-mail address. Customers can take advantage of the new program even if they, or the gift recipient, do not own a Kindle reader. Jobs: TJ Maxx not authorized iPad dealer
TJ Maxx is "not an authorized reseller" of the iPad, an e-mail from Apple CEO Steve Jobs is quoted as saying. The message comes in response to a person asking why a near $100 price difference exists between TJ Maxx's iPads and those sold by Apple and other official vendors. GeForce GTX 595 tritt gegen Radeon HD 6990 an?

3DMark 11 wird am 30. November veröffentlicht

Study: iPhone 4 users happier than Android, BlackBerry users
iPhone 4 owners are noticeably happier with their devices than owners of recent Android and BlackBerry phones, ChangeWave found in a new study. Of those asked in November, 84 percent of iPhone 4 32GB owners and 78 percent of 16GB owners were "very satisfied." The approval was only higher than for the 3GS but was eight points higher than the next-best ranking for a rival, HTC's Evo 4G, which scored 76 percent.

Hon Hai denies workers selling white iPhone parts
Workers at Foxconn are not selling white casings and other iPhone parts, a spokesman with associated firm Hon Hai insists. The refutation was made through a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, as a response to claims that an American college student was able to tap connections at Foxconn to obtain white parts, then used to convert existing black iPhone 4s. Apple has so far failed to ship its own promised white iPhones, and is rumored to be abandoning the concept entirely.

id Software: iPad power can beat Wii, some Xbox 360 games
id Software co-founder John Carmack in a talk today characterized the iPad as having enough power to trump some modern consoles. He agreed with initial Rage HD players that the Apple tablet can produce better results than any Wii game and about a quarter of Xbox 360 titles. Analyst says Apple is working on thinner CDMA-GSM iPad
With speculation about suppliers for the 2nd generation iPad already flying about, we're also hearing that Apple is working on creating a "World iPad" that would contain both GSM and CDMA capabilities making it compatible with phone carriers around the world.

Analyst pegs higher iPad production, lower CDMA iPhones
Apple has escalated its iPad production plans for the fourth quarter of 2010, according to RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. The analyst suggests that this means Apple is expecting large holiday sales, in spite of new competition from Android tablets, and the risk of the new MacBook Air cannibalizing some sales. Abramsky estimates that Apple will build about 40 million iPads in total during 2011.

iPhone as a company worth more than all but 10 companies in the world
Once a company's worth gets into the stratospheric range that Apple now inhabits, financial analysts start to play with the numbers and find all sorts of fascinating things. Stock analysis firm Trefis looked at Apple's product mix and estimated that the iPhone line accounts for about 53.5% of Apple's stock value. By comparison, the Mac weighs in at a paltry 18.3%.

Real white iPhone 4s supposedly sold on Chinese grey market
Website Giz-China has published photos of what appear to be genuine white iPhone 4s on sale in China. The boxes are marked with a label describing them as being "for internal use only," and certainly look more convincing than many of the knock-offs we see from that area.
Prices start from around 5500 Yuan (about $828 as of this writing) and climb to 8000 Yuan ($1204) for the 16GB model. The cost is even higher for the 32GB and 64GB models.

Canadian law would require phone unlocks after contracts
A proposed new law in Canada could lead carriers and phone manufacturers to have a mandatory unlock in place under certain conditions. Bill 133 in the province of Ontario would require that carriers unlock a phone for free if users either pays full price for the device or their contract expires. Carriers would at the same time have to let customers end a contract in 30 days and could only make changes mid-contract with permission.

Yahoo! releases Sketch-a-Search for iPad, update for iPhone
Yahoo has released an iPad version of its popular iPhone Sketch-a-Search app. For those not familiar with the app, Sketch-a-Search lets users simply sketch a line around an area of the built-in Google map to find restaurants within the sketched area. The app on the iPhone is great, and it's something I've always thought Apple would be smart to build in as a feature to iOS's Google Maps app. Searching a map by drawing a line with your finger is much faster and user-friendly than typing in search queries. The only drawback to the app is that it only searches for restaurants and not other points of interest.

Foxconn workers protest pay, relocation plans
Some Foxconn workers in Foshan, China are protesting their treatment at the hands of management, says Reuters. Thousands of people are said to have gathered outside the Foshan factory this week, complaining about two major issues: low pay, as well as plans to relocate people to factories further inland, where companies tend to pay less for both labor and real estate. Flight Control HD now available on Steam for Mac
Would-be air traffic controllers can now get their flight control fix on the Mac or PC. Flight Control HD, the addictive line drawing game that lets you drag aircraft to their landing zones with your finger on iOS, is now available on Steam for US$4.99.
The game, from game house Firemint, was a bona fide hit on the iPhone early on, and then migrated to the iPad earlier this year in the HD format. Flight Control HD has also hit the PS3 in a stereoscopic 3D version that supports the PlayStation Move gesture-based controller.

New Apple patent addresses iPad's weight
Spend some time reading on the iPad and you'll notice it starts to feel heavy. Apparently Apple is aware of this, as a new patent describes novel materials meant to reduce its weight.
The current model has an aluminum body, but the patent suggests carbon fiber reinforced plastic, or CFRP. According to Engineers Paradise, CFRP offers high impact resistance and extreme rigidity, and is often used on high-stress products like bicycle frames and robot arms.

At least some TJ Maxx outlets are now selling iPads, accounts say. Although a number of stores across the US have denied carrying any, some in Ohio, New Jersey and New York are claiming to have stock. Next-generation iPad parts suppliers supposedly named
While we wait for iOS 4.2 to drop, Apple is supposedly busy lining up parts suppliers for the next-generation iPad. DigiTimes reports that Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies will be the initial Printed Circuit Board (PCB) suppliers. Their sources say that these companies have received "certification from Apple" and will begin shipping parts in December. They also expect additional suppliers to be added in February.
DigiTimes' track record is hit-and-miss, so keep that in mind. Here's what you can bank on: Apple will update the iPad's hardware. It will include parts, and those parts will be made by someone. The current iPad models will be a year old as of April 3rd, 2011, so it's reasonable that Apple will release an update near the beginning of next year.

Cox starts up cellphone service, gives cash for unused time
Cox today switched on its long promised cellular service with an aim to undercut its rivals on price. The service will hinge on a concept known as MoneyBack Minutes that rewards light users. Apple patent may mean future unibodies get woven from carbon fiber
Ask any motorsport enthusiast and they'll tell you that there's just something about the way a carbon fiber weave ripples in the sunlight that makes them want to cover every surface of their vehicles with the stuff. Mozilla: 104 Millionen US-Dollar Umsatz, 400 Millionen Anwender

Analyst says next 3G iPad to have dual-mode EVDO, HSPA chip
Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair on Friday said Apple's future iPad would have a dual-mode chip to support both EVDO and HSPA for 3G. Referring to supplier checks, he was told the new model would be a "World iPad" with a Qualcomm chip that could support networks like AT&T's and Verizon's without needing separate models. Production for current models would wind down over the next two months as Apple prepared to switch over.

It may not exactly stray too far from the company's previous models, but MSI's new Wind Top AC1900 does boast a slightly revised design, and some expectedly low-end but not terrible specs (assuming the price is right). That includes an 18.5-inch 1,366 x 768 display, a dual-core Celeron E3400 processor, 2GB of RAM upgradeable to 4GB, a 320GB hard drive, a built-in DVD burner, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and Windows 7 Home Premium for an OS. PCI-SIG releases PCI Express 3.0 specification
PCI-SIG has released the next generation specification for PCI Express. The new PCIe Express 3.0 specification delivers double the bandwidth of the superseded PCIe Express 2.0 specification. This increase in bandwidth is delivered by a new 128b/130b encoding scheme and a data rate of 8 gigtransfers per second (GT/s). The specification also retains backwards compatibility with the previous PCIe Express 2.O architecture.

Registry-Hack macht WP7-Geräte zu USB-Laufwerken
Mit Windows Phone 7 versucht Microsoft, zur Konkurrenz auf dem Smartphone-Markt aufzuschließen. Mac OS X 10.6.5 fixes MacBook Air display issues
As noted by Mac Rumors, the Mac OS X 10.6.5 software update released last week fixes the display issues some owners were having with their new MacBook Airs. In a new support document released today titled MacBook Air (Late 2010): Video anomalies after waking from sleep, Apple describes the symptoms as "After waking from sleep, your MacBook Air display may flicker or fade from light to dark repeatedly." Their solution: "Download and apply the Mac OS X v10.6.5 update to resolve this issue."
No word on why Apple didn't the MacBook Air fix in the 10.6.5 release notes, but owners of the new MacBook Airs will be glad they've (probably) already downloaded the fix to prevent the display issues

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit has been launched in the App Store by EA Mobile. Players are able to take on the role of a cop through a full career mode spanning 24 events. Magellan RoadMate GPS app updated for iOS 4, includes real-time traffic and multitasking
Magellan may not be the head honcho when it comes to standalone PNDs here in North America, but that's not stopping the outfit from keeping its iOS app up to snuff. Apple posts updates for Boot Camp, MacBook firmware
Apple has posted several maintenance updates for Boot Camp, along with EFI firmware updates for the latest MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The Boot Camp downloads add support for the ATI-Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, Apple's USB Ethernet adapter, and the MacBook Air SuperDrive. Version 3.2 is also said to include several critical bug fixes.

Next-gen iPad ramping up in February, suppliers named
A new leak has hinted that full production of the second-generation iPad may ramp up in February. Three circuit board producers, Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies, are due to ship the first batch of components in December, but four more should come onboard to accelerate manufacturing in February. The Digitimes tips had the formal launch due sometime in the first quarter of the year.

We were really digging this 10-inch Android tablet when we spotted it back in August, and now it's shipping for a totally palatable $300 pricetag. It's powerful enough to play 720p video, has a 1024 x 600 screen, HDMI out, 802.11n WiFi and even a front facing camera. Yahoo! Connected TV store will let developers start charging for apps in March 2011
Yahoo! has been building its Connected TV widget platform up since debuting at CES 2009 and opening up its SDK in 2010, and it's already getting started on a new push for 2011 - paid apps. Right now the various TVs from Samsung, Sony, VIZIO, Toshiba and LG based on its platform only offer free widgets but the Connected TV Store is expected to launch in March, letting developers hawk their wares at the remote-wielding masses for anywhere from 99 cents to $99, with Yahoo! receiving a 30 percent cut for its trouble.

Survey: Android ties iOS in smartphone share
Millennial Media, a global mobile advertising network, has issued a study showing that for the first time, the combined Android share of the market has tied with iOS devices at 37 percent of network requests (ad clicks) on Millennial's network. Boot Camp, MacBook firmware updates appear in Software Update
After the excitement of the Safari 5.0.3 update this morning, Apple quietly slipped in a few more updates this afternoon.
Boot Camp Software Update 3.2 for Windows 32 bit and Windows 64 bit both provide support for the ATI-Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, the Apple USB Ethernet adapter, and the MacBook Air SuperDrive, as well as "addressing critical bug fixes."
Don't be fooled by the post date of "January 18, 2010" -- the previous update came out on January 19, 2010, so it appears that someone forgot to change the month while posting the Knowledge Base article.

News Corp developing a tablet-exclusive publication
Reuters is reporting that News Corp, the world's third-largest media conglomerate, has confirmed they will be releasing a news publication developed specifically for tablet computers like the iPad. "It's a tablet-only product and it's very exciting," says James Murdoch, Chairman and Chief Executive, who was speaking to journalists at a conference in Spain. "You'll hear more about that soon." It's been almost a year and a half since I took a look at CameraBag, an app that allows you to filter your photos, mimicking classic film cameras from days gone by. Now the creators of CameraBag have stepped the game up with Infinicam. The app can generate an almost unlimited amount of filters to apply to images, and also provides 18 border styles to suit your photographic whim.

Aliph now shipping Jambox Bluetooth speakers
The Jambox Bluetooth speaker announced at the start of the month is now shipping. Aliph's first Bluetooth speaker, as opposed to a Jawbone headset, it has similar app support as the headsets and is one of the very few wireless speakers that can be upgraded with new firmware. Microsoft today opened its first retail store in home territory through controversial means with an unveiling in the Bellevue Square Mall. Early reports had about 1,000 line up for the event, which saw CEO Steve Ballmer cut the ribbon, but the company once again used the strategy of holding a teen-focused concert to lure an audience into the store. NVIDIA offers Fermi-packing Quadro 4000 to the Mac Pro user
In case you missed it, a couple days ago NVIDIA outed the Fermi Quadro 4000 Mac Edition video card for Mac Pro users. The card packs a punch with 256 CUDA cores, a 256-bit memory interface and 2GBs of memory (I remember the day I got excited by a video card with 16MBs of memory, though, sorting out the right driver was always a bit of a problem so maybe nothing's changed there).
NVIDIA says the Quadro 4000 will deliver "excellent graphics performance across a broad range of design, animation and video applications." Especially if you use Apple's Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Autodesk Smoke, Mathworks Matlab and Adobe's Creative Suite 5.
