Nokia says 'very small' number of N8s aren't turning on, warranty will cover it
We've been getting a few tips this week -- and seeing a few things on Twitter -- saying that N8s are failing in noticeable quantities, but we wanted to hold off until we'd figured out what was really going on. Well, Nokia's own Niklas Savander is commenting on the situation now -- so we'd say it's definitely real -- though he's insisting the number of affected units is "very small" and that the company's normal warranty rules apply, so owners of dead units should contact their local support number. That's all well and good, but getting service on a paperweight is still a bummer, especially when said phone is your primary means of communication -- so let's hope

Etch-a-Sketch iPhone case draws on nostalgia
The guys at Headcase have created a pretty cool iPhone case that will probably appeal to anyone who's ever completed Kindergarten. Their officially licensed Etch-a-Sketch case is available for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and iPhone 4. The case is made of impact resistant ABS plastic that should protect your iPhone from drops and falls (if you still happen to hold it like a four year old).
Sadly though, the case is just a case and doesn't turn your iPhone into a real Etch-a-Sketch. Thankfully, there's an app that does.

Some TJ Maxx stores carrying iPad
At least some TJ Maxx outlets are now selling iPads, accounts say. Although a number of stores across the US have denied carrying any, some in Ohio, New Jersey and New York are claiming to have stock. One in Vernon, New York is said to be selling units for as little as $400, just shy of $100 below the standard price for a 16GB Wi-Fi model.

Mozy 2.0 for Mac is faster, more Mac-like
Mozy, the cloud-based backup service for both PC's and Macs has just released version 2.0 of its Mozy for Mac software. Lifehacker reports that while most users won't notice anything other than the shiny new Mac-native appearance, Mozy also added a new query builder to make creating advanced backup rules easier, improved performance and stability, increased backup speed, and added an easy on/off switch for setting up automatic backups. In other words, they have attempted to make it even simpler to use than it already was.

Nokia confirms N8s hit by major power bug; C7 also affected
Nokia today acknowledged that the N8 was affected by a serious power flaw. The company claimed that a "very small number" of the phones wouldn't turn on properly. Users have reported that their phones' power management failed and won't allow them to reboot, recharge or start up when it happens.

Financial Times gives iPad bonuses to staff
The Financial Times (FT), that UK-based financial newspaper printed on distinctive salmon-colored paper, is serious about the future of media on tablets like the iPad. FT launched a free iPad app back in May that has been an success story for the paper, with 400,000 subscribers paying for full content as of October, 2010.
iPad users are accounting for 10% of new digital subscriptions, and the FT has pulled in over £1 million in ad revenues since the launch.The FT app received one of the prestigious Apple Design Awards at WWDC 2010.

Apple gibt Boot Camp Software Update 3.2 frei
Noch ein weiteres Update steht am heutigen Abend zur Verfügung. Das Boot Camp Software Update 3.2 gibt es sowohl in der Ausführung für 32 Bit als auch für 64 Bit. In der Updatebeschreibung ist zu lesen, die neue Version unterstütze die neue Grafikkarte des Typs ATI Radeon HD 5870 sowie den Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Qualcomm talking to AT&T, other carriers over MediaFLO spectrum sale?
Seems Qualcomm wasn't kidding when it said selling off MediaFLO's spectrum was a possibility now that it's cutting off direct-to-consumer mobile TV services. BusinessWeek is reporting that the company has sat down recently with "several carriers" -- though only AT&T is being called out by name -- presumably with the goal of fleshing out just how much dinero it could land for offing the spectrum MediaFLO uses to deliver programming. Rage for iOS supports video out, available now in SD and HD
id games has released the iPhone version of Rage in two different versions, both SD and HD, available right now universally for the iPhone and the iPad. TUAW spoke with John Carmack this afternoon, and he said that the HD version is about twice as nice as the SD version: "All of the user interface is at twice the resolution, the animated characters are at twice the precision, and the world textures are at twice the feedback bias, which doesn't quite equate to twice the pixel density, but it's almost twice the data that goes in there."
The SD version will run well on both, but the HD version will stutter a bit on pre-version 4 iPhones and iPods, so anyone with a 3G or even a 3GS is advised against it. The game is

Apple files patent for iPad-size carbon fiber housing
Apple engineers appear to have been working to develop new housings using alternative materials such as carbon fiber, a method which was detailed in a patent filing recently published by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The "Reinforced Device Housing" patent, first filed in May 2009, describes a "layered fiber-in-matrix" material used to construct a spine attached to a carbon-fiber skin.

Bell, Novatel team up on first 42Mbps 3G in North America
Bell today had the distinction of being the first carrier in North America to start up a live 42Mbps network using HSPA+ 3G. The Canadian carrier is relying on dual cell sites to get theoretical speeds twice as quick as usual HSPA+ and as much as 11Mbps for uploads. Taking a cue from Sprint's WiMAX, however, the carrier is charging $10 extra on all data plans to get the full 42Mbps speed.

Modu barely alive after failed bid for capital, laying off most of its employees
Modu hasn't really stormed the market with any of its miniature offerings just yet, and even with the just-announced Modu T and the upcoming Android-based Modu W offering a chance to turn things around, it looks like Modu is up against the financial ropes. Apple releases iOS 4.2.1 gold master to developers
Apple is seeding a new gold master of iOS to developers, v4.2.1, reports say. Although no notes have been leaked, one source claims that the firmware is aimed at fixing some serious issues with audio and Exchange support in iOS 4.2, which itself received an unusual second gold master distribution last Friday. Apple has yet to push v4.2 out to the public, and the existence of a v4.2.1 preview likely suggests that the former will not reach the general public.

Apple, China Mobile forging deal, says Chinese news
Apple has signed a business agreement with China Mobile, says Ticonderoga Securities' Brian White. The analyst notes that a local publication, the Chengdu Chinese Commercial News, is claiming the birth of a "cooperation agreement" between the two companies, though what that products or services that might involve is still unknown. China Mobile is the country's largest wireless carrier, with about 70 percent of the country's subscribers, or 569.8 million.

LaCie ships USB 3.0 flash drive with 260MBps speed
LaCie today merged SSDs with flash drives in the FastKey. It uses the USB 3.0 interface to deliver transfer speeds as fast as 260MBps, or up to 100 times faster than average USB 2.0 drives. A mix of the interface, flash drive design and DRAM cache gives the drive its speed edge.

iOS 4.2.1 gold master posted to Apple developer center
We're inching ever closer to the public release of iOS 4.2 for iPad, people! Apple's developer center just posted build 8C148, which purports to be iOS 4.2.1 GM (gold master). Does this mean we're getting iOS 4.2 tomorrow? We'll keep refreshing our iTunes update screens and running our shell scripts -- as soon as we see the new version drop, we will let you know.

Okay, so we've got to be close to a release at this point, right? After posting a WiFi-patched GM last week, Apple's back at it again with an iOS 4.2.1 build for its iPhone Developer Program members and let's hope this is the very last one before it hits iTunes installations across the land. Sling Adapter gives Dish users streaming to iPad, Android
Sling today rolled out the Sling Adapter as both one of its lowest cost TV streamers and its first dedicated to its partner Dish. Running solely through its USB connection, it shares the TV from any ViP 722 or 722k DVR over either a web browser or a mobile app. Viewers can steer the DVR alongside controlling channels.

$399 iPads, fondue sets appearing at TJ Maxx locations across the country
Sure, we know where you guys go when you're near a strip mall and have to pick up an irregularly sized Tommy Hilfiger shirt, or when you run out of Paco Rabanne cologne before a hot date, but we definitely did a double take when our tipster Aaron sent us these pics he took of a 16GB WiFi iPad that he found at a TJ Maxx in Vernon, NY -- and not just because they're going for a relatively reasonable $399. We made a couple phone calls and found some at stores in Ohio and New Jersey (including one who said they were holding their stock back for Black Friday) while we struck out in other parts of the country

Line2 users shouldn't update to iOS 4.2
Toktumi is warning all all iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users with the handy VoIP app Line2 installed to avoid upgrading to the coming-any-day-now iOS 4.2.
According to an email sent to registered users today, users who run Line2 in the background after upgrading to iOS 4.2 may have trouble with the ringer. Specifically, it will continue to ring even after an incoming call is answered.
Line2 adds a second line to your iPhone that works over 3G and Wi-Fi. It also allows for unlimited texting in the U.S. and Canada. International text messages cost US$0.10 each. Tokutumi notes that Apple Developer Support has been made aware of this issue with the 4.2 release candidates. However, as of the most recent iOS gold master build, it's still a problem.

Registry hack allows for direct loading of media on Windows Phone 7 devices
Prefer to load media onto your Windows Phone 7 device the old fashioned way? Then it looks like your solution is just a simple Windows registry hack away. Coming shortly after the USB tethering hack, the folks at Windows Phone Central have now discovered that you can effectively turn your Windows Phone into a USB drive by modifying just three entries in the registry of your Windows desktop PC. Once done, you'll be able to drag and drop files to your heart's content -- albeit only on a computer that's had the registry hack done, of course.

Apple: iAd startet im Januar offiziell auch in Deutschland
Nun ist die Katze aus dem Sack. Die Spekulationen der Financial Times haben sich weitestgehend bestätigt die Werbeplattform iAd startet in Frankreich und in den UK bereits im Dezember diesen Jahres. Wozniak misquoted on iOS, says Android like Windows
Quickly following up on a Dutch interview, Steve Wozniak this afternoon said he was misquoted. The Apple co-founder said he believed virtually every app he used was "better on the iPhone." Android's main advantages were in its Voice Actions for navigation and other tasks, but Apple's acquisitions of Siri and Poly9 would solve these, he told Engadget.

The Android landscape's certainly getting crowded, isn't it? We can still vividly remember the days when the T-Mobile G1 was the only game in town, and now here we are -- just two years later -- flush with options covering virtually every market segment from the ultra-high end to the ultra-low and everything in between. Grippity keypad aims to improve surfing in front of TV
Grippity is offering a new type of keypad for those with home theater computers and similar media centers hooked up to their living room TVs. The keypad has a see-through keyboard that can be accessed from the front or back, with users gripping the sides and type from the backside of the device; the approach is more ergonomic than the front, Grippity claimed. Printopia expands AirPrint support to multiple printers
Ecamm has launched Printopia, a new Mac printing app. The software tricks iOS 4.2 devices into recognizing any Mac printer as an AirPrint-compatible device. Users can additionally direct files to "virtual" printers, for instance output as a JPG or PDF file on a Mac. Another option includes printing to a Dropbox folder for online sync purposes.

iAd will launch in Europe this December
Earlier today, Apple formally announced its plans to launch iAd in Europe (The UK and France specifically). The initial advertisers will be L'Oréal, Renault, Louis Vuitton, Nespresso, Perrier, Unilever, Citi, Evian, LG Display, AB InBev, Turkish Airlines and Absolute Radio. The Financial Times correctly guessed that Apple would announce its intentions this week.
Apple's VP of iAd, Andy Miller, boasted about the program's success in a press release. "In just four months, we've doubled the number of advertisers on the network and thousands of developers now have a valuable new source of revenue."

Google tackling tablets, app discovery in Android Market
Google has sent a notice to developers that has signaled it's both readying for Android tablets and hoping to improve the platform's chronic problems with finding apps. Teams are now required to submit 512x512 icons and have to include a tablet-sized, 1024x500 "feature" image. App writers will further have the option of as many as eight screenshots and even a YouTube video to show the app in action.

Samsung Galaxy Tab to ship with exclusive MTV content
Looks like Samsung is hoping to tap into some of that magical magic that made Speidi and the Situation household names, and it's doing so by developing an app in partnership with MTV Networks International. Called Touch MTV, it will feature single episodes of various shows including The Hills and Jersey Shore, content from MTV Iggy, and regular updates that are sure to be of great interest to a certain "very lucrative and trend-setting audience." The art of destroyed Apple products
We've featured way too many photos and videos of people destroying Apple products in unique ways. Now, a collaboration between Michael Tompert and photographer Paul Fairchild features iPads, iPhones, and MacBooks "artfully" destroyed in different ways on a stark white background. Yes, they're still trashing a lot of beautiful Apple equipment, but they're doing it for art. That makes it OK, I suppose.
The trashed devices were photographed with a large format camera. Some of the "blood spatter" marks appear to have been added later, as they are exactly the same on both sides of the dead device. My personal favorite? The Apple Magic Mouse seen here that appears to have cut with a band saw no less than 11 times.

Apple posts Safari 5.0.3, 4.1.3 updates
Apple has released two new versions of the Safari web browser. The update for Leopard, Snow Leopard and Windows, v5.0.3, fixes several problems, such as Flash 10.1 material overlapping other content, and pop-up blocking not working reliably. Apple is also promising more accurate Top Hit and Top Sites results, as well as better stability with screen readers and JavaScript-heavy extensions.

Jabra debuts six touchscreen-paired headsets designed for Microsoft Lync
Microsoft's Lync, the supposed "next generation of unified communications" (a.k.a. the rebranded Office Communicator) just made its official debut this week, and it looks like it's already racking up some pretty big hardware partners. There's something deep down inside of us that makes us want to believe Apple has some sort of app plan for Apple TV, and by "deep down inside" we mean "jailbreaking." Rage comes to App Store, Flight Control for Mac hits Steam
As promised by the company's co-founder, John Carmack, id Software has launched two iOS versions of Rage at the App Store. UBS: iPad, other tablets to delay PC sales, grow like TVs
Tablets are on a fast growth track that could delay many PC sales and is comparable more to TVs and other major electronics, UBS analyst Maynard Um said in a detailed study. The iPad, Galaxy Tab and other tablets wouldn't directly steal share from notebooks but, by late 2011, could persuade many users to stall computer upgrades if a tablet costs the same. Financial Times to give tablet credit to 1,800 workers
The Financial Times is planning to give its 1,800-plus workers £300 or $480 payouts as credit against the cost of a tablet, an internally circulating memo reveals. The newspaper's CEO, John Ridding, acknowledges in the memo that the money is not only a performance bonus, but intended to encourage familiarity with tablets, judge their potential, and also serve as a work aid while traveling. Kampfbot Mega Hurtz: klein, stark, wendig und böse (Video)

Viel klischeemässiger kann man einen Kampfbot wohl nicht präsentieren: Mega Hurtz (!) von Inspector Bots kann nicht nur die Bösen umnieten, sondern auch die Guten aus der Gefahrenzone ziehen (die bei Bedarf so schwer sein können wie ein Hummer H3) oder einfach nur zur Aufklärung unterwegs sein. Mit seinem Vierradantrieb kann er sich auf der Stelle drehen und ist ziemlich geländegängig, mit der passenden Rammausstattung kann er auch prima Wände durchbrechen. Das ist doch mal eine gelungene Kombination zweier Technologien: auf der FPD hat Hitachi einen kapazitiven Touchscreen vorgestellt, der auch auf Styluseingabe, Fingernägel oder behandschuhte Hände reagiert. Prima für alle die in kalten Gegenden leben, aber auch für alle, die auf präzisere Eingaben angewiesen sind, die man nur mit einem dünnen Stylus hinbekommt. Hier nochmal das Interview mit Googles Eric Schmidt auf dem Web 2.0 Summit in ganzer Länge, 44 Minuten insgesamt, aber mit dem noch unangekündigten Nexus S gleich am Anfang. Interessanterweise nennt Schmidt das Phone die ganze Zeit nicht beim Namen, allerdings stellt er auch klar, dass er nie gesagt habe, dass es keinen Nexus-Nachfolger geben wird, sondern nur, dass es kein Nexus 2 geben wird. Nachdem der öffentliche Beta-Test erfolgreich absolviert wurde, hat Adafruit Industries jetzt sein Square-System offiziell gestartet, das es jedem Besitzer von iPhone, iPad oder iPod touch ermöglicht, Geld per Kreditkartenzahlung anzunehmen. Um das System zu nutzen, lädt man die Square-App herunter, meldet sich an und erhält dann postalisch und für umme einen Dongel, der in die Audiobuchse gesteckt wird und Kreditkarten lesen kann. Die Abrechnung erfolgt strikt elektronisch, Zahlungen werden angeblich über Nacht und nicht erst nach einem Monat abgewickelt.

Bitteschön, MeeGo 1.1 in vollem Gang auf einem Smartphone von Aava mit Intel Moorestown-Chip. Ist wahrscheinlich das Virta 2 Smartphone Development Kit, aber das ist im leicht schummrigen Licht nicht ganz so gut zu erkennen. Vom OS selbst gibt es gar nicht so viel zu sehen, dafür jede Menge sanfte Übergänge und flüssiges Scrolling. Die Firefox-Ladezeit ist allerdings stark verbesserungswürdig. Sony Ericssons Anzu: kein Gingerbread, aber trotzdem ganz nett

Das kürzlich geleakte Anzu (wahrscheinlich wird es im Handel Xperia X12 heissen) hielten wir eigentlich für das Gingerbread-Flaggschiff von Sony Ericsson, aber Eldar Murtazin hat uns diese Hoffnung zerstört. Kollege Joshua Topolsky hat sich den Barnes & Noble-Reader Nook Color genauer angesehen und sich dabei offensichtlich ziemlich wohl gefühlt. Angefangen mit dem Industriedesign von Yves Behar, welches das Gerät mit einem "Eckhaken" unverwechselbar macht. Damit hat dieser seine Aufgabe allerdings auch schon erfüllt. Der Bildschirm ist angenehm klar und mit einer speziellen Beschichtung gegen Spiegelung versehen, die aber in der grell beleuchteten New Yorker U-Bahn an ihre Grenzen stößt. Leider ist das OS nicht wirklich ausgereift, aber trotzdem erhält wohl man für 249 Dollar

Elecoms neuester Streich "Actrail" stellt eine Symbiose zwischen iPod Shuffle und Kopfhörer her. Der funktioniert kabellos und ist an einer der beiden Kopfhörermuscheln mit einem Stecker für Apples MP3-Player bestückt. Unterstützt wird dabei nur der Shuffle der neuesten Generation. Noch diesen Monat soll der Acatrail in Japan auf den Markt kommen und dort 4200 Yen kosten, das sind umgerechnet etwa 37 Euro.

Das nennt man dann wohl ein iPad-Opfer: Jazzmutant, Hersteller des ersten professionellen Multitouch-Controllers für Musiker Lemur, stellt zum Ende des Jahres den Betrieb endgültig ein. Bis dahin sollen die letzten Geräte verkauft werden, die für 1542 Euro inklusive Shipping zu haben sind. Waffa Bilal, Professor an der New York University, ist was die Augen angeht völlig gesund, will sich aber trotzdem wie ein Cyborg eine Kamera in den Kopf operieren lassen. Sie soll im Hinterkopf verankert werden und im Rahmen des Kunstwerks The 3rd I alle sechzig Sekunden ein Foto machen, das auf Monitoren im arabischen Museum für Moderne Kunst in Qatar gezeigt wird. Google unterstützt endlich das Editieren von Dokumenten auf mobilen Geräten. Das große Hindernis dabei war bislang natürlich der kleine Screen, von den technischen Anforderungen mla ganz abgesehen. Was das Interface angeht, scheint sich Google zumindest ordentlich Gedanken gemacht zu haben, auch wenn mitteleuropäische Wurstfinger noch immer ihre liebe Not haben dürften. SE behauptete ja lange Zeit steif und fest, dass die Hardware dieses Feature einfach nicht hergeben würde, wirklich geglaubt hat das dem Hersteller aber niemand. Richtig so. Grippity 1 back-typing keyboard finally up for pre-order, asks for $60 and your patience
To say the Grippity has been a long time in coming would be an understatement. iPhone: SMS-Textblasen Farbe ändern für Jailbreaker
Bei Jailbreakern ist neben SBSettings meist WinterBoard eine der meistgeladenen Apps. Viele Tools, die den Look der iPhone-UI ändern, greifen auf dieses zurück. Wer gezielt das Grün/Grau der Standard-SMS-Ansicht nicht mag, muss aber nicht gleich die Vielzahl verfügbarer Themes durchsuchen, ob eines mit schöneren Farben dabei ist. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak partly surprised the industry in a Dutch interview by arguing that Android would eventually overtake iOS in sales. Train Conductor is a sort of line-drawing game, although it's not quite as open as most games of that ilk. The idea is that you've got four rails of trains running at each other, and as the conductor, it's your job to make sure nobody hits anybody else. You can stop and start trains when you want, and you can just draw tracks across from one set of rails to the other. It sounds simple, and of course, it is when you start. But as with most puzzlers like this, things get crazy quick, and eventually you're shooting trains back and forth, desperately trying to keep them coming without any crashes.

Steve Wozniak: Android will be the dominant smartphone platform
Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak, has never been one to mince words. Today's no different as demonstrated in an interview with the Dutch-language De Telegraaf newspaper in The Netherlands. The first revelation is an admission that Apple had collaborated with a well-known Japanese consumer electronics company in 2004 to develop a phone that was ahead of its time. Briefly: FingerPrint extends AirPrint, Abelton winter promo
Collobos Software has released a new utility that enables iOS 4.2 devices to print with all Mac- and AirPort-shared printers. By using FingerPrint, any printer on a local network can be found and used as an AirPrint-enabled device. The company notes, however, that certain features on some models may not work as expected. FingerPrint uses the Bonjour network to operate, allowing it to function on both Snow Leopard and Leopard operating systems. A free seven-day trial can be downloaded from the company's website, while a full license costs $8.

Mac games: Magic Dice retiring, Jalada Skip Over debuts
Mike Yenco, the developer of Magic Dice, has updated the game to v1.6 and made it freeware, announcing its retirement at the end of the year. His company's other software, including Finance v6.0.2, Agenda v4.0.9, Archive v6.0.3 and iKeeper v3.0.2, are now on sale for the holidays at $10 off their normal price. Meanwhile, German game developer Jalada GmbH have released their latest game for Mac, Jalada Skip Over ($5), a hexagonal-tile puzzle adventure with a retro feel.

SlingPlayer for iPad delivers all kinds of television to Apple's tablet
Sling Media has posted a preview video of their upcoming iPad app, and you can watch it in action right after the break below. It looks pretty darn good -- the app of course allows you to stream everything that comes from your SlingBox DVR device, including live TV, DVR'd content, or any on-demand offerings you might happen to have. The iPad app uses Apple's own H.264 codec, so while this is just a video demonstration, presumably the real thing will look just as good.
Unfortunately, this won't be the cheapest option -- the app isn't universal at all, so you'll have to pay another $30 on top of the $30 you may have already paid for the iPho

Xtreamer outs iPad dock that doubles as streaming hub
Xtreamer has recently unveiled its new iXtreamer dock for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch devices that will not only charge the devices but also allows for media playback onto users' televisions and home theater systems. GSMA proposes embedded SIMs like those rumored for iPhone
The GSM Association tonight discussed plans for a new, embedded SIM card that could simplify activation and allow new devices. A "task force" of carriers that includes AT&T, T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom and Verizon hopes to replace the SIM card on some devices with a built-in design that would allow remote activation. Users could not only start using a phone without having to enter a store but could see 3G or 4G devices where even a micro SIM was too small, such as a camera or an MP3 player.

Droid 2 Global GSM bands locked, camera bulge added to case
No surprise here, but it looks like Verizon's on-sale-but-never-really-announced Droid 2 Global has its GSM radios locked down, meaning you can't just throw an AT&T SIM in there and expect anything to work. Of course, the enterprising hackers at xda-developers are hot on the case, so there's a chance things will be opened up, but we wouldn't hold our breath.

Verizon says 4G network has drawn Apple's interest
Verizon's decision to move to LTE attracted Apple, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg said in an interview today. The 4G network both drew Apple in the first place and helped land an iPad deal. He followed his wireless chief Lowell McAdam's strategy of bouncing iPhone questions back to Apple and skipped direct answers to WSJ questions.

GSM Association proposes embedded SIM cards with remote activation for 2012
The GSM Association is taking a serious look at embedded SIM cards that can be remotely activated, in both traditional (e.g. phones) and non-traditional devices (e.g. cameras, MP3 players). According to the presser, a task force has been assembled, culled from "leading technical experts" whose home turfs include virtually every major worldwide carrier. An "analysis of market requirements" is due in January 2011, and devices with the new technology are reportedly expected in 2012.

Developer explains limitations of Mac App Store
Kevin Walzer of Code by Kevin has sent an open letter to registered users of the applications he has developed, describing some of the changes the new Mac App Store will impose. The open letter is a request for feedback on the changes, along with opinions regarding Walzer's choice to develop for the store or not. From the customer's standpoint there will be no more 'try before you buy' offers, as demos will not be allowed. Survey: Set-top boxes, iPad, e-readers the hot gifts
Gazelle, a company that pays cash to reuse and recycle consumer electronics (what they call "ReCommerce"), has issued its 2010 forecast for the holiday season -- based on an analysis of what their customers are trading in -- and finds a trend of upgrading as much as buying new this year. Brazilian billionaire wants Apple manufacturing contract
AppleInsider reports that Brazilian billionare Eike Batista, who made his $27 billion fortune in the mining industry, is trying to convince Apple to have its products made in Brazil rather than by Foxconn in Shenzhen, China. He is currently constructing the Port of Acu in southern Brazil -- a $1.6 billion construction project -- encompassing 90 square miles of available space that he hopes will lure companies to Brazil for product assembly. If Apple doesn't bite, Mr. Batista says he is going to try to lure BMW to his new development instead.

Ever wondered what it's like to work at Apple? AOL Jobs spoke to Joe Moreno, a software engineer who worked at Apple from 1998 to 2007. Joe touched numerous products and projects, notably WebObjects and the Apple Online Store (No, he wasn't the guy who puts the yellow sticky note up when new products arrive). Dell's mobile chief Ron Garriques is out
Ron Garriques, who has been leading Dell's mobile communications group ever since its formation a year ago, is leaving the company. Ron originally joined Dell in 2007, after a high profile career at Motorola, and has overseen a rather ambitious entry for the company into the phone industry. AT&T: 80 percent of network now upgraded to HSPA+
AT&T promised that it would be expanding its HSPA+ rollout this year, and it's now finally touting some actual results. Speaking at the Sencha Conference in San Francisco this week, AT&T CTO John Donovan confirmed that the carrier has upgraded a full 80 percent of its network to HSPA+, which promises to offer two and half times the performance of regular HSPA. Donovan also talked a bit out mobile data use in general, and revealed that data traffic growth has actually slowed over the past few months from a rate of 50 times to 30 times what it was three years ago. Amazon lost battle for Beatles' digital content
Following Apple's announcement that it would finally bring Beatles tracks onto the iTunes store, additional information of the negotiations has surfaced. Apple reportedly beat offers from Google and Amazon to secure the digital catalog, industry insiders have told the New York Post. Although the terms of the final deal were not disclosed, Apple may have been forced to take a smaller cut to guarantee exclusivity into 2011.

Dell mobile president leaving as phones, tablets shuffled
Dell's mobile president Ron Garriques today signaled he was leaving the company as part of a reorganization of its phone and tablet plans. The Texas PC builder is merging the communication solutions section into its individual home, business, enterprise and government sections, eliminating the need for a separate mobile group but not necessarily Garriques himself. The executive will stay in his role until the end of Dell's fiscal year in January 31 and consult the company for the rest of that year.

Zen Bound 2 arrives on the Mac via Steam
Zen Bound 2, the second in the series of terrific iPhone and iPad games, is now out on the Mac platform as well, courtesy of Valve's great Steam platform. If you've ever played this one (and you definitely should), you'll know how it works -- wrap a virtual rope around a series of weird shapes trying to cover a certain percentage of the surface with paint. The gameplay's super intuitive and the whole experience is very zen, with solid colors and graphics backing up a great soundtrack and some intriguing realistic physics.
The iOS version is universal at $2.99, and the Mac version comes

FingerPrint app for Mac enables AirPrint for the printers Apple left behind
Printing never "just works," does it? There always has to be some wrench thrown in. We were hoping Apple was about to solve some of that with AirPrint, but at the last minute it left out the Mac printer-sharing functionalities that were supposedly going to arrive with Mac OS X 10.6.5. That means as of right now the only way to do AirPrint with the yet-to-be-released iOS 4.2 is to buy one of those fancy new HP printers with the AirPrint-compatible ePrint functionality. We're guessing Apple is just giving this feature a little more time in the oven

Hitachi shows first 7,200RPM, 3TB internal hard drive
Hitachi has quietly brought out its Deskstar 7K3000 this week and achieved a pair of industry firsts. The 3.5-inch internal hard drive is not only the first 7,200RPM drive of its size with a 3TB capacity split among five platters but is also the company's first with a 6Gbps SATA interface. FCC chair: Google/Verizon neutrality proposal hurt progress
The Google and Verizon net neutrality proposal ultimately hurt progress more than it helped, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski said at the Web 2.0 Summit today. He liked the idea of opposing sides coming to a deal, but the timing "slowed down some other processes" and prevented a deal that was otherwise getting close. The details of what went wrong weren't disclosed.

Tron app updated with Light Cycles
Disney's Tron movie is coming up quick, and today, the official Tron app (which has been out since Comic-Con, hosting exclusive previews and news from the movie) has added another new feature: Light Cycle battles. Yes, you can download the official app for free, and play a fun little 2D version of the famous Tron Light Cycle battle game right there in the app. The whole thing is pretty simple -- just swipe to change direction, and of course the goal is to leave a light path that will block your opponents' bikes (or you can create a field trap by drawing a rectangle with your Light Cycle). When you add in the tank game that was released a little while back, the app is definitely worth a download.

Motorola video survey says Americans are still into paying for TV service, buying new TVs
It doesn't seem like everyone's jumped on the cord cutting bandwagon just yet, as the 2010 "Media Engagement Barometer" conducted by Vanson Bourne for Motorola surveyed 7,500 consumers in 13 countries (1,000 in the US) before issuing its findings that 86 percent of Americans subscribe to pay TV providers and 6% are using video/TV on the internet, even while free OTA TV is available. And those 3D TVs that are everywhere? Worldwide, they figured 75 percent of viewers either own or plan to own an HDTV in the next 18 months, while 4% currently own 3D sets, 25 percent indicated they plan to upgrade to one
