Gruber just got the rarest phone ever: a white iPhone 4
John Gruber, who writes the popular Daring Fireball blog just sent out a Tweet saying "Look what a little birdie sent me" and then linked to an image of a girl (I'm asuming his daughter son), playing with a white iPhone 4.
I've been reading Gruber's blog for some time and he isn't the kind of guy who seems to play practical jokes. So there's two options here: either someone just gave Gruber a white iPhone 4, or someone gave Gruber a picture of a boy playing with a white iPhone 4.
The only question is, how did either of them get it? You can see the full picture here.

iPad launched in Russia today with very limited stock
Apple has officially launched the iPad in Russia today (or yesterday, if you happen to be in Russia at the moment). All six models are available from three retail chains including M.Video, Bely Veter and re:Store.
There's quite a few strings attached to this launch, however. According to Tatar-inform, the iPad will only be on sale in five cities including Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, and Kazan. Perhaps even worse for Russian Apple aficionados who hope to get their hands on an iPad is that there are only 3,000 to 4,000 iPads available in the country on launch, but Apple does plan to ship forty to fifty thousand units to Russia by the year's end.

Only 40,000 Windows Phone 7 devices sold in US on launch?
Microsoft may have sold just 40,000 Windows Phone 7 devices on its debut in the US. A claim from a market research tracker cited the figure as representing sales across both AT&T and T-Mobile and for all devices. None of the involved companies would confirm numbers to The Street, although a T-Mobile representative said it had "strong interest." The HTC HD7 had at least temporarily sold out at the company's online store.

Office for Mac 2011 gets first major patch
Microsoft has posted its first-ever update for Office 2011 for Mac, v14.0.1. The patch is 110.5MB, and deals mainly with stability problems that could lead to programs freezing, or simply quitting entirely. Only Outlook has not received any stability tweaks.

YouTube Remote app released, controls Leanback from the palm of your hand

Forrester: e-book sales to hit nearly $1 billion this year, $3 billion by 2015
There's no denying that e-books are already big business, and market research firm Forrester is now offering some pretty impressive numbers that show just how big it already is, and how much bigger it will get in the next few years. Report claims dates for iOS, iTunes, Mac OS updates
A new report is claiming to have the release dates of a trio of connected Apple updates. An inside source at AT&T tells MacStories that Mac OS X 10.6.5 will be distributed on Wednesday, along with iTunes 10.1. iOS 4.2 is expected to become available on Friday, at 10AM Pacific time or 1PM Eastern.

MobileMe finds a missing iPad but it's not a happy ending
Find My iPhone/iPad is one terrific benefit of MobileMe. In fact, to me, it is the best part of the service. For an Indiana man, the ability to find a missing iPad worked as it should, but too late to do much good.
Here's the depressing story. One of our readers was moving stuff into his car with his Dad. With hands full, Dad put the iPad on the hood of the car. Then the pair drove off, leaving the iPad in the street. When our reader discovered the missing iPad he went straight to MobileMe, and the service dutifully located the iPad a few blocks away.
The police assumed the iPad was stolen, and as they searched the apartment building where the location was, the police asked the owner to send a sound to the iPad so it could be found. They did locate

iOS allows Skype calls without confirmation
iOS is allowing webpages to dial Skype calls without confirmation, a report says. Typically, when the mobile version of Safari encounters a "tel://" extension prompting it to start a conventional phone call, a pop-up window allows people to confirm or cancel. HTML using the "skype://" extension, however, can force a device to load Skype and dial without any extra prompting.

iOS 4.2 to launch Friday?
MacStories.net is reporting that one of their sources working close with AT&T revealed that Apple will release iOS 4.2 on Friday at 10AM PST for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. MacStories is also reporting that tomorrow will see the release of iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 via Software Update. Both iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 are presumed to be required for the iOS 4.2 update for its AirPlay and AirPrint functionality.

iPad portrait light array for photographers
Here's an interesting way to use 9 iPads. Photographer Jesse Rosten mounted the set on several pieces of plywood, maxed out the brightness on each and had assistants move then around while he shot his model. In fact, the iPad arrays were the only light sources for this particular shoot.
Was it a publicity stunt? Of course (and well done). But watch the video after the break. The photos came out well! We hope Jesse borrowed the iPads because 9 x $499 is $4,491. Still, it was a fun idea with nice results. Good work, everyone.

FaceIt-3GS brings FaceTime to your jailbroken 3GS
Ah, the beautiful, ever-useful jailbreak and the developers that make it worthwhile. It's already unlocked the magic of FaceTime over 3G, and now it's making FaceTime capable with any old iPhone 3GS handset (thanks to the iPhoneIslam Team, who did the heavy lifting). Of course, lacking a front facing camera, the resulting video chat might be a little short on faces, but the functionality certainly isn't hurting anybody. Right, Apple? Sprint to launch Peel case for iPod touch on Sunday
The rumors have come to fruition: Sprint will launch the ZTE Peel case for the iPod touch on November 14th. According to documents acquired by the Boy Genius Report, the device will cost US$79.99 and require a $30 month-to-month plan. Customers will get a 1GB data allowance per month, with overage charges of $0.05 per megabyte.
The ZTE Peel is an iPod touch case that's also a mobile hotspot. When it place, it provides 3G access to the iPod touch (2nd and 3rd generation) plus one other device. Why not the 4th generation touch? Well, the camera is in the wrong spot, for starters.

'Beautiful Modeler' app turns iPad into multitouch 3D sculpting device
Sure, it might not make for as good of an R&B album title as Nilay Patel's "Beautiful Handcuffs," but Interactive Fabrication's "Beautiful Modeler" iPad app is probably a bit more useful (though not as useful with the ladies). The concept is to use the iPad's multitouch screen as an input for multi-finger 3D modeling on a computer, while the tablet's tilt sense lets you navigate around the object. Hitachi demos capacitive touchscreen that sees gloves, pens
Hitachi has given a demonstration of a new capacitive touchscreen that could allow touch without needing direct finger contact. The surface still uses projection to catch the input but can recognize not only a thin layer in between, such as cloth from a glove, but also completely inanimate points such as a pen or a fingernail, Japan's Nikkei BP learned. Current displays rely on the direct electrical contact from a finger and are often hard to use in cold weather or need specialized pens.

Adobe Audition for Mac public beta now available
Audio editors rejoice! Adobe Audition for Mac is now available for download as a public beta from the Adobe website.
Adobe describes Audition for Mac as bringing "modern audio post-production to the Mac." The application looks very full-featured and the performance seems good as well. The company touts the software as having "fast start-up, high performance multi-threaded processing, and parallel workflows." Audition provides standard audio editing and mixing functions and Adobe says that the noise reduction and sound sweetening capabilities of the application are excellent. Audition also provides native Dolby 5.1 Surround support and multi-channel effects.

Apple to open new Akron, Mishawaka stores on Saturday
Apple has announced plans to open two US Apple Stores on Saturday. One is located in Akron, Ohio, inside the Summit Mall at 3265 West Market Street. AMD kündigt 20-Kern-Prozessor für 2012 an

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 teased, promises run at MacBook Air
Lenovo has slipped out details of a new IdeaPad that may provide the first early Windows parallel to the new MacBook Air. The U260 has an unusual in-between, 12.5-inch display and will be almost as thin and light as its Apple counterparts, weighing in at 3.04 pounds and with a design 0.71 inches thick at its deepest point. Performance is potentially faster with an ultra low-voltage Core i3 or i5, but the decision will likely relegate the design to Intel's integrated video versus the Air's usually faster GeForce 320M.

Calvetica offers a better calendar app for iPhone
Calvetica, for iPhone and iPod touch, offers the promise of a simple but powerful calendar app. There was a bit of a tussle yesterday in the TUAW back channels as a bunch of us watched the Calvetica product video on the developer's home page. I won, meaning I bought it first to write this review, and I've been playing with it since then.
I'm pleased to report that it delivers clean, easy-to-create scheduling. Although it certainly helps to Read The (very brief) FAQ before using the app -- since I wouldn't have figured out the swipe-to-menu feature on my own -- once I got going, I found I could easily create to-do items and set reminders for them with a minimum of taps.

Apple buys Wi-Gear, branded Bluetooth headset coming?
It appears that Apple is spending at least a few dollars out of that US$51 billion cache of cash. 9to5Mac reports that the company has purchased a small Bay Area Bluetooth headset design firm named Wi-Gear. Wi-Gear's products included three generations of the iMuffs A2DP Bluetooth stereo headset (seen above), which worked with a rather unsightly dongle for those devices that didn't have built-in support for Bluetooth 2.0 and without the dongle for newer iDevices.

Performance-Boost für das iPhone 3G dank Firmware 4.2

Microsoft's already added a Taxi Fare Calculator to Bing Maps to help keep your cabbie in check, and it's now actually enlisted the help of some 33,000 Beijing cab drivers in an effort to further improve driving directions. More specifically, it's relying on GPS data collected from the cab drivers' cars over a period of three months, which has since been funneled into a system called T-Drive created by a team at Microsoft Research Asia. OmniVision preps 8-megapixel CMOS sensor that may hit iPhone
OmniVision this morning unveiled a new camera sensor that could improve the image quality for the iPhone and other smartphones. The OV8820 upgrades to an eight-megapixel, CMOS-based sensor that can capture well in low light and boasts electronic stabilization to minimize shake. Apple has quietly absorbed a small, San Francisco-based Bluetooth headphone maker, Wi-Gear, a 9to5Mac source claims. The deal is in fact said to have happened two months ago, for an undisclosed amount of money. NVIDIA today at last confirmed the existence of the GeForce GTX 580, its new graphics leader. The design jumps from 448 processing cores to 512 and adds 16 PolyMorph (hardware geometry tessellation) units that significantly boost the performance, especially when they can be fully used in DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1. Last month Verizon Wireless stores began selling iPad/MiFi bundles. Now, the first television spot advertising that fact has debuted.
It features a user in a small room with an iPad on his lap. He pulls a MiFi from his pocket, flicks it on and presto! The walls of the room disappear as "the world opens up" to him. It's got a nice Apple vibe and should get people talking. "Wait a minute. Apple and Verizon?"

Erster europäischer Supercomputer durchbricht Petaflops-Barriere
Der Supercomputer Tera 100 hat als erstes europäisches Modell die Petaflops-Grenze überwunden. Im Benchmark Linpack schaffte er 1,05 Billiarden Gleitkommaoperationen pro Sekunde. Die Spitzenleistung betrug 1,25 Petaflops. Derzeitiger Rekordhalter ist der chinesische Supercomputer Tianhe-1A, der es kürzlich auf 2,507 Petaflops brachte und der die Mitte November erscheinende halbjährliche Top-500-Rangliste voraussichtlich anführen wird.

Word Warrior is a good one. It's a mashup of spelling games and an RPG, and while it's a very simple affair, there's some fun gameplay to be had here. The RPG elements are extremely streamlined (almost too much so -- the gear editor is basically just a toggle between various items that you've collected, and the choices while leveling up are slim), but the spelling challenges actually fit right up next to the monster battling. You're given a row of letters and a time limit to spell something out with them, and if you succeed, you smash the monster facing you and do some damage. Xing meldet deutliches Umsatz- und Gewinnplus
Xing hat seinen Umsatz im dritten Quartal 2010 (PDF) auf 13,77 Millionen Euro gesteigert. Das sind rund 2,1 Millionen mehr als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs. Das Konzernergebnis wuchs von 344.000 Euro oder 0,07 Euro je Aktie auf 2,11 Millionen Euro oder 0,41 Euro pro Anteilsschein.

iWork ‘11 soll pünktlich zum Start des Mac App Stores erscheinen
Gemäss Informationen von AppleInsider wird Apple in Kürze eine neue Version von iWork einführen. iWork ‘11 beinhaltet demzufolge wie schon die Vorgängerversionen die drei Programme Keynote, Pages und Numbers und soll zeitgleich mit dem Mac App Store, das heisst spätestens im Januar, erscheinen. Offenbar hat Apple die Entwicklung des Softwarepaketes schon vor einigen Wochen abgeschlossen und sich erst im letzten Moment gegen eine Einführung von iWork ‘11 auf dem «Back to the Mac»-Event entschieden.
Über die Neuerungen in iWork ‘11 ist noch nichts bekannt. Es ist auch noch unklar, ob iWork weiterhin in einer Retailversion verkauft wird oder ob sich Apple auf den Vertrieb über den Mac App Store konzentrieren wird. AppleInsider rechnet damit, dass die einzelnen Applikationen im Mac App Store für je 19.99 US-Dollar erhältlich sein werden.

Samsung beschämt die Welt mal wieder mit südkoreanischer Ingenieursgröße: Der Konzern hat einen Fernseher mit 70-Zoll Diagonale vorgestllet, der 3D-TV in "Ultra Definition" bietet und natürlich eine Weltpremiere darstellt. Ultra Definition indiziert dabei eine Auflösung von 3.840 mal 2.160 Pixeln, die von eigens entwickelten Grafik-Prozessoren bedient werden, damit auf der 180-Zentimeterglotze alles schön geschmeidig bleibt. Bing not meeting your needs? Don't fret, Google just pushed its Google Search app for Windows Phone 7 live in Marketplace. A move the mirrors the Bing app availability on the Android Market. The Google Search app utilizes your location to provide local search results and features suggestions as your type and a search history to quickly repeat any previous queries. While there's no way to reassign Google Search to the dedicated search "button" on WP7 devices, you could always pin the app to the Start screen. Unfortunately, we're still not seeing it populated in the UK Marketplace (search for "Google Search") but that should be remedied anytime now.

Bericht: Chinas Embargo auf Seltenerdmetalle lässt Technikpreise steigen
Ein chinesisches Embargo auf die chemische Gruppe der Seltenerdmetalle hat die Rohstoffkosten stark in die Höhe getrieben. Einem jetzt veröffentlichten Bericht zufolge wird sich das auch auf die Kosten von IT-Hardware auswirken. E Ink today detailed the technical capabilities of its new Triton color ePaper that made its debut on the color Hanvon e-reader yesterday. iOS 4.2 verbessert die Performance auf dem iPhone 3G
Mit iOS 4.2 soll sich die Performance des Betriebssystems auf dem iPhone 3G aus dem Jahr 2008 erneut verbessern. Dies berichtet der Blog TiPb nach einigen Tests mit dem Gold-Master-Build von iOS 4.2. Als iOS 4 diesen Sommer veröffentlicht wurde, musste sich Apple massive Kritik betreffend der Geschwindigkeit des Systems auf älteren iPhones anhören. Das iPhone 3G konnte nicht nur viele der neuen Funktionen nicht nutzen, sondern wurde durch das Update auch unerträglich langsam. iWork '11 may wait for the Mac App Store
Plenty of people, including some of us at TUAW, thought an updated iWork suite would debut alongside iLife at the recent "Back to the Mac" event. iWork was a no-show at that event, however, and AppleInsider claims it's because Apple is holding off on a release of iWork '11 until the launch of the Mac App Store in January.
AppleInsider notes that images shown during the event showed each iWork application available for individual purchase at US$19.99 each on the Mac App Store. Even purchased separately at this price, the three applications that make up Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Keynote, and Numbers) would cost less than Apple's current $79 price for the iWork '09 bundle.

Looks like Swiss daredevil Yves Rossy is back to the, well, daredeviltry. On November 5, 2010, the self-described Jetman lept off a platform attached to the side of the Esprit Breitling Orbiter hot air balloon and, after reaching an altitude of 2,400 meters (7,874 feet), came back to loop around the thing twice. He was aided in his endeavor by a new, smaller wing (two meters across) with four jets, and executed the maneuvers using only his body movements to steer. Days after it was thought locked down, Apple has again updated a 10.6.5 release for developers only, just two days after the previous build -- causing some inconvenience to testers of the first builds of 10.6.6, seeded just four days ago. Adobe CTO defends Flash against battery life criticism
In response to Ars Technica's recent finding that running Adobe's Flash Player on the new MacBook Air cut battery life by up to a third, Adobe's CTO, Kevin Lynch, has come out in in defense of his company's plugin during an interview with Fast Company. "It's a false argument to make," he claims. "When you're displaying content, any technology will use more power to display, versus not displaying content. If you used HTML5, for example, to display advertisements, that would use as much or more processing power than what Flash uses."

Japan's DoCoMo will launch 4G network Christmas Eve
DoCoMo of Japan will open its fourth-generation LTE cellular network for data use only on Dec. 24th, boasting speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 3G service. Maximum download rates may hit 75Mbps, with maximum upload speeds about half that, or 37.5Mbps. Eventually, the company suggests, download speeds on LTE will reach 300Mbps. On launch, the service will cover large portions of Tokyo, and also be available in parts of Nagoya, Osaka and a few other areas, with coverage reaching most major cities by April of 2011. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 detailed: 512 CUDA cores, 1.5GB of GDDR5 on 'world's fastest DX 11 GPU'
It might not be November 9 all around the world yet, but NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 has already had its spec sheet dished out to the world, courtesy of CyberPower's seemingly early announcement. The new chip will offer a 772MHz clock speed, 512 processing cores, and a 192.4GBps memory bandwidth, courtesy of 1.5GB of GDDR5 clocked at an effective rate of 4GHz. CyberPower is strapping this beast into its finest rigs, and for additional overkill it'll let you SLI up to three of them within one hot and steamy case. MacGraPhoto 2 underway: Nine graphics apps for $40
For the month of November, ApparentSoft is hosting a Mac bundle deal of software called MacGraPhoto 2 aimed at graphic creators, including the company's own ImageFramer v3, an all-new version released last month. Amazon to enact 70 percent revenue share for Kindle newspaper and magazine publishers
Magazine and newspaper publishers are about to get a larger piece of the Kindle pie -- 70 percent, to be exact. That's what Amazon's now offering, in an effort that's clearly aimed to attract more periodicals to the service. We're guessing that this newfangled SmartPOP feature works a lot like Lenovo's Constant Connect (or perhaps LG's own Air Sync?), but either way, the feature set is still fairly innovative. Amazon Kindle deal could clear iPad periodicals
Amazon today negotiated a change in terms with magazine and newspaper publishers to give them more royalties for the Kindle and which could have implications for iPad periodicals. The new terms give them the same 70 percent cut of the retail price as publishers have had for books in recent months. Rules are light and only require that a publisher offers the content through every possible Kindle-supporting country and in the Kindle app on all platforms. The deal takes effect December 1.

Epic Games, Id Software show off jaw-dropping new iPhone games
We've already seen Epic Games and Id Software show off their respective game engines for iOS devices, but they're only now finally giving folks a look at the first actual games that will use them. SyFy joins list of channels blocking Google TV
Viewers discovered this weekend that SyFy has begun blocking Google TV devices from its site. The NBC-owned channel began telling users that video is not "currently available on this device." It joins blocks by other major studios, including NBC itself as well as ABC and CBS. Hulu has blocked Google TV from its free access since before launch.

Forensic analysis of Macs, as used in law enforcement, can now be carried out in the field with the introduction of MacMarshal 2 in both a forensic and a new field edition, the latter coming pre-loaded on a USB thumb drive to analyze live running machines, including volatile states such as RAM contents, prior Wi-Fi access points, swap and hibernation file contents and Spotlight searches. DxO Optics Pro 6.5 released, adds single-shot HDR
DxO Labs unveiled a major update of its award-winning image enhancement software, Optics Pro 6.5. The new version adds support for some of the latest Canon, Pentax, Sony and Nikon cameras, makes 150 new Optics Modules available, allows HDR rendering from single RAW shots without the need for bracketing, and integrates Lightroom 3 support among other features. Stun Fone iPhone accessory: YouTube spoof or real product?
Thanks to TUAW reader Adam, I was pointed in the direction of YouTube a few minutes ago to watch a video of a purported stun gun accessory for iPhone 3 / 3GS / 4. While I'm 99.9 percent certain that this is a spoof, the other .1 percent is wishing that the US$24.99 Stun Fone was actually available for sale. It would be so handy for those situations where someone cuts in a line ahead of me
A little research on Amazon showed that stun guns are readily available at about this price, so setting one up to be triggered by a press of the volume buttons on an iPhone isn't exactly out of the realm of reality. It would probably also require something other than the iPhone's battery to charge it up.

Google TV's Fancast.com backdoor to Hulu video closed; Syfy starts blocking too
Even though Hulu has been blocking Google TV, for a few days users could still access the videos through Comcast's Fancast.com portal, but that loophole has been closed, repeating a pattern seen after the launch of Flash on Froyo and the overall path of Google TV up to this point. Samsung Continuum first hands-on
If surprise was the focus of the event, we'd say the Samsung Android-powered, Verizon-exclusive (and, alas, Bing-driven) Continuum reveal was a comedy of errors -- but who cares now that we've got our hands on the Galaxy S phone, secondary ticker and all. Hasbro add-on promises 3D on iPhone, iPod touch
Hasbro plans to show a new gadget to investors on Tuesday that will let iPhone and iPod touch owners view 3D images. According to a Monday report, the attachment will be called My3D and will let users view 3D thanks in part to special My3D apps. Some apps will need to be paid for, while others will be free. Hasbro worked with Apple on the development of the add-on.

Bill Campbell confirms Apple, Google war forced split
Apple board member Bill Campbell confirmed tonight that his decision to drop backing for Google was the direct result of the feud between Apple and Google. When asked to make a choice, he picked Apple to avoid any further problems. The existence of Android "changed the whole dynamic," he told the NYT and left him staying with Apple despite having set up much of Google's corporate structure.

Apple patent reveals scrollable menus, toolbars for OS X Lion
Apple has filed a patent featuring some concepts for scrollable menus and toolbars that could eventually be used in the next version of OS X, 10.7 Lion. The new patent covers all kinds of things, from extra UI elements in the OS X desktop to special iOS menus and features. But they all look like what you see above -- an almost Cover Flow-like scrollable interface that boils down a series of functions or menus into a set of icons.

Good Technology have updated their free Good for Enterprise application for iOS devices to v1.7.0, adding a new iPad HD version to the universal iOS app which makes full use of the expanded screen size. Good For Enterprise allows business users to easily work with "corporate" secure email accounts, calendars and contacts from Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino servers, taking advantage of the enterprise features in iOS 3 and higher to deliver push synchronization, over-the-air and on-device encryption, password policy enforcement and remote wiping of data.

iOS 4.2 improves iPhone 3G performance
Testing has shown that the iPhone 3G's performance is much improved under iOS 4.2. Rene Ritchie at TiPb has posted a video (which you can watch after the break) of both iOS 3.0 and 4.2 (the gold master) running on an iPhone 3G. Here's what he found.
Entering text into Apple's Notes app was acceptably snappy. Browsing the Web was also noticeably improved, especially scrolling and load times (over Wi-Fi). Some pinch-and-zoom was a bit laggy, but definitely worlds better than iOS 4.0 on a 3G.

Large Hadron Collider wants to make mini Big Bangs, Sheldon and Leonard disapprove
The Large Hadron Collider has been busily colliding protons since it opened last year, but a new set of experiments starting later this month could tell us more about the beginnings of the universe than we've ever known before. WiGig promises finished 7Gbps devices shipping by 2012
VESA chairman and WiGig board member Bruce Montag in an interview this weekend revealed that the 7Gbps WiGig standard for Wi-Fi should be ready in just over a year. He expected prototypes based on the ultra wideband, 60GHz technology to be ready in 2011 and shipping devices in 2012.
