Apple waiting on Mac App Store to launch iWork '11?
iWork '11 is actually already finished and just waiting for the introduction of the Mac App Store in order to ship, sources for AppleInsider claim. The same people also say that Numbers, Pages and Keynote will be available separately through the App Store, and that Apple has yet to decide whether the usual boxed retail version of iWork will be published. Samsung confirms Continuum dual-display Android handset for Verizon
After a rather large complement of leaks, Samsung has finally confirmed its Continuum phone for Verizon, via Twitter of all places. The phone will ship on November 11th. Samsung is billing it as the "first phone with a dedicated ticker display," referring to the secondary 1.8-inch color screen below the capacitive touch buttons. There's a Samsung Mobile event happening in just an hour or so that will undoubtedly shed more light on this Android handset, but for now we expect the specs to be in line with other Galaxy S-series handsets. Lynch: Apple fostering 'negative campaigning' against Flash
Many of the current attacks against Flash are unwarranted, claims Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch. Testing recently suggested that an 11-inch MacBook Air with Flash active can potentially lose up to two hours of battery life, although the constant cycling of Flash ads is believed to have been an aggravating factor in benchmarks. Hasbro plans to introduce its new My3D accessory for the iPhone and iPod touch tomorrow, according to an Associated Press report. Auto-updating charts with Numbers and Keynote
If you find yourself making the charts for your presentations in Numbers and would like an easy way to update them, the chart updating feature in Keynote does just that. With a simple click, your chart in Keynote is updated to reflect changes made in your Numbers spreadsheet.
This feature requires that you start your workflow in Numbers. After creating a chart, copy and paste it over to a slide in Keynote.
Now, whenever you click on the chart in your Keynote presentation, a button will appear atop of it.
Clicking on the arrow with the two circles on it will update the chart with figures

iOS 4.2 bringing speed improvements to iPhone 3G?
The recent iOS updates have mostly been welcome improvements for iPhone 4 and 3GS users, but it's been a decidedly different story for folks sticking to their venerable iPhone 3G. AMD Radeon HD 6970's specs, photos, delays slip out
AMD's expected graphics range-topper, the Radeon HD 6970, surfaced over the weekend with some of the earliest specs and photos. The card should be a single-chip design and should pack 1,536 stream (visual effects) processors, or slightly less than the 1,600 of the 5870; performance should get faster with 96 texture units versus the older hardware's 80. It may be the first reference design, single-chip mainstream video hardware to have 2GB of RAM onboard, according to Fudzilla's anonymous sources.

Dell Venue Pro on sale at Microsoft stores, but good luck getting one
So, just as was rumored, it seems Dell pushed a small handful of Venue Pros to Microsoft's seven flagship stores for sale today. We just spoke with a friendly rep who told us they were "going fast" and didn't sound too confident that we'd be able to get one by the time we got down there, but theoretically if we did, it'd be $199 for a new line (or an eligible upgrade) or $449 outright. iPad pre-orders to begin in Korea this week
South Korea's KT Corporation will begin taking iPad pre-orders "this week." Initially banned by the Korea Communications Commission, the iPad eventually passed inspection and has been highly anticipated by customers. KT Corp. hopes to begin shipments in November. All models will be sold, though a firm release date was not available as of this writing.
Meanwhile, KT Corp. competitor SK Telecom is preparing to release the Galaxy Tablet. SK holds about half of the country's wireless market. The heat will be on in South Korea when this tablet battle commences.

Microsoft slide chronicles the journey from Portable Media Center to Windows Phone 7
In case you missed it, Wired has a new piece out on the (very brief) history of Windows Phone 7. Unfortunately, the article pulls all punches, and skates through some bizarre statements from Microsofties, including calling Kin "a worthwhile risk that resulted in important lessons," and the real head scratcher of the piece: "Software is like making a movie and building a skyscraper. Movies coming to Swiss, Italian, Spanish stores?
Apple may be on the verge of making movies officially available in several more European countries, an Italian site claims. Macity notes that the option is, for instance, appearing for some iTunes and Apple TV users in Italy, although only by roundabout means; the option doesn't yet show in the iTunes Store's drop-down menus. iPad 2 ads being shot in New York City?
British photographer David Sims is rumored to have been shooting a TV ad for the next generation iPad in New York City recently. According to 9to5 Mac, the shoot took place at Pier 59.
As with most rumors, details are few and far between. Sources say that current-model iPads were used in the shoot, which will be replaced in post-production. Apparently security was very tight and all participants were required to sign non-disclosure agreements (you can see how well that worked).

Hanvon to be first with color E Ink reader
China's Hanvon today had the distinction of becoming the first company to support a color E Ink screen. The company said it would launch a 9.7-inch touchscreen device. The design has few details but should behave slightly more like a tablet, with a website in view in the initial NYT render and both 3G and Wi-Fi support. It reaches the Chinese market in March for an equivalent price of $440.

Kingston ships high speed, low-cost V100 SSDs
Flash memory maker Kingston has just announced a new series of mainstream solid state drives in the SSDNow V100. The drives are available in 64, 128 and 256GB capacities, with all getting TRIM support and an optimized controller for high read and write performance of about 250MB per second and 230MB per second respectively on the top two capacities. Chinese 11.6" MacBook Air clone needs to go on a diet
Mac fans in China who can't get their hands on a real MacBook Air can pick up the next best thing something that would make Steve Jobs and Jony Ive nauseous: an 11.6" MacBook Air clone.
Made by China's E-Stary, the HY118 (gotta love that name) has the guts of a standard netbook, including a typical 160GB hard disk, an Intel Atom N270 CPU and 1GB of RAM. For a few bucks more, you can get the HY118 equipped with a genuine Apple logo!

Toshiba introduces MacBook Air-type solid-state drives
One of the key elements that allowed Apple to make the new MacBook Air so slim was the elimination of traditional drive packaging for the solid-state drive (SSD). Rather than installing the flash memory in a case that could be installed in place of a spinning drive, the SSD looks like an old-school DRAM stick with exposed chips and the interface contacts along one end.

Sony confirms new Bluetooth headset for PS3, phones
Sony today reworked its PS3 Bluetooth headset in a new model that should improve the experience both for the console and for phones. iOS 4.2 boosts performance on iPhone 3G
The iPhone 3G behaves much better under iOS 4.2 than previous v4.x releases, testing shows. Although v4.0 and v4.1 are technically compatible with the 3G, people have complained about lethargic performance not present with the earlier v3.x firmware. Apple has in fact been hit with a class action lawsuit accusing it of intentionally crippling the phone's performance in order to push people to the iPhone 4.

MacBook Air benchmarks for maxed-out 11-inch model
Those sweet, thin little MacBook Airs are sure making a lot of Mac-heads drool, even though they are not the speediest Macs in the world by a long shot. While the diminutive 11.6-inch model isn't really designed to be used with Pro apps or CPU/RAM hogs like Adobe Photoshop, that didn't keep the folks at AnandTech from running a suite of tough benchmarks on that tiny Air.

In April of 2009, Apple announced the pending discontinuation of its .Mac Homepage service. A formal date was set in October, and that date is today.
Your sites won't be gone for good, however. To find them, open your iDisk and navigate to the Sites folder. There you'll find all of the HTML pages that made up your Homesite. Likewise, pictures and movies will be found in the Pictures and Movies folder.
Note that publishing with iWeb will not be affected by this change. So long, Homepages! Thanks for all the fish.

Google to give away free in-flight Wi-Fi during holidays
Google today restarted its free holiday Wi-Fi program with an approach that focuses on the flights. The new plan will give free Internet access on any AirTran, Delta or Virgin America domestic flight from November 20 through to January 2. The effort is promoted by the Chrome browser team in an attempt to drive use of the browser.

Nokia taking over Symbian development, Foundation responsible for licensing
So it seems the Symbian Foundation isn't necessarily going away, but it's transitioning its role in a big, big way. They're undertaking a "strategic change" that will involve the Foundation moving to a new role where it controls the product's patent portfolio and licenses the Symbian brand and its research and development activities, but the meat of the operation -- the actual platform development -- will move over to Nokia beginning the end of March next year. For its part, Nokia says that it's still "strongly committed" to the platform, it just won't be the Foundation throwing it together. Israel to activate SMS missile alert system next year
This one's been talked about since the middle of last year (at least), but it looks as if the time for contemplating is over and done with. It's bruited that the Israel Defense Forces will be moving forward on a plan to light up a new cellular system that will blast out SMS alerts to citizens if and when a missile is fired in the direction of Israel. Just over $7 million will be invested, with the application itself being jointly designed by eViglio and Ericsson. If all goes well, it'll be operational in June of 2011, and it's just one aspect of the country's effort to consolidate all emergency alerts into one centralized system. HTC may chase Apple with own Sense app store
A leak today has uncovered details of what may be HTC's plans to launch its own app store as a response to the iPhone. Two contacts claimed the company was recruiting content editors to manage both app and e-book sections for a store, including periodicals. Just a few at HTC's Taiwan headquarters would handle tasks at first, the Financial Times was told, but it would eventually expand to about 100 workers abroad.

Washington Post app comes to iPad
Joining other prominent newspapers, the Washington Post today introduced a native iPad application. The iPad version of the paper contains all print articles, as well as access to blogs. Tango links your iOS devices for remote music control
The Tango Remote Music Player performs a neat trick and does it for free: it links any two iOS devices on a wireless network, allowing one to be a music source and the other to be a remote control.
To get going, Tango needs to be on both devices. One device is set to play its on-board music; the other device serves as the remote. In my case, I used my iPhone as a music source while it was plugged into some external speakers. My iPad discovered the iPhone, and I saw playlists, albums, and tracks. I could play anything I wanted from the iPad. Of course it also works the other way, and you can have an iPod touch substituting for the iPad or iPhone.

LG L-03C: Smarte Kompaktkamera kann auch telefonieren
Bislang haben Samsung und Nokia versucht mit 12-MP-Kameras im Handysegment Fotografenherzen für sich zu gewinnen. Adobe hat auf seiner Hausmesse MAX Konzepte vorgestellt, wie es die Bildbearbeitung Photoshop und Tablet-PCs zusammenbringen will. Die Führung des Projekts liegt in den Händen von John Nack, der das Konzept auch in einem Blogbeitrag vorstellt. HTC plant eigenen App Store

In der Financial Times gab es Neuigkeiten über die aktuellen Zukunftspläne von HTC zu lesen. Demnach werden im Moment Leute eingestellt, die sich um den Aufbau eines eigenen App Stores kümmern sollen. Nachdem in Europa der HTC Sense Cloud-Service für Desire HD und Z gelauncht wurde, wäre das auch der nächste konsequente Schritt. Denn dort lassen sich bereits Apps-Empfehlungen einsehen und Links aufs Smartphone schicken. Auch für Windows Phone 7 hat HTC bereits zehn Apps geliefert, klingt also nicht nach einer reinen Android-Angelegenheit.

Nun kommt Toshiba mit einer eigenen Blade X-Gale SSD-Linie und lässt die Apple-Speicher ein bisschen weniger proprietär erscheinen. FaceTime auf dem iPhone 3GS – möglich, aber nicht gut
Wer auch auf dem iPhone 3GS FaceTime nutzen möchte, der findet nunmehr die App “FaceIt-3GS” im Cydia Store. Um das Programm verwenden zu können, ist allerdings ein Jailbreak notwendig. Matt Richardson hat mit Hilfe der Elektronik-Plattform einen Selbstauslöser für DSLRs entwickelt. Kompliziert und zeitaufwendig, wenn man nicht sowieso ständig den Lötkolben für sein Tagwerk benötigt, aber hey!, seine persönliche Final Frontier muss jeden Tag neu definiert werden. OLPC-Tablet verspätet sich um anderthalb Monate
Das für Kinder gedachte Tablet XO-3 der Stiftung One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) wird später fertig werden als ursprünglich geplant. Der anvisierte Präsentationstermin zur Consumer Electronics Show Anfang Januar könne nicht eingehalten werden, sagte OLPC-Gründer Nicholas Negroponte in einem Video-Interview. Jailbroken iPhone 3GS gets FaceTime... sort of
Jailbreaking team iPhoneIslam has managed to enable FaceTime on a jailbroken iPhone 3GS sort of. iPhoneIslam's app, "FaceIt-3GS," is currently available in the Cydia store, and allows users to enable FaceTime in the iPhone 3GS's Settings app.
However, the functionality is quite limited. The most obvious stumbling block is hardware-related -- without a front-facing camera, the FaceTime experience will be quite limited on the iPhone 3GS no matter how creative jailbreakers get. iPhoneIslam's FaceIt-3GS app doesn't enable FaceTime via the 3GS's rear-facing camera either, though, so the only added functionality this hack appears to give 3GS owners is the ability to accept FaceTime calls from an iPhone 4, newest-generation iPod touch, or Mac, and view the sende

Toshiba makes MacBook Air's blade SSD available to all
Toshiba tonight shared word that the special blade solid-state drive from the new MacBook Air will be launched for all computer builders, not just Apple. The Blade X-gale uses the same dimensions and is just an inch wide and 0.09 inches thick. The design is nonetheless as fast as many of the best full-size SSDs and can peak at 220MB per second in read speeds and 180MB per second in writes, a key to the Air's near-instant response times.

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 has been previewed again with clues that the cooling will be as important as the performance. The official clip (below) shows the "unreleased GPU" having vapor chamber cooling, which carries the heat away from the graphics chipset through constantly circling water that evaporates and condenses as it reaches the heat sinks. Combined with a dynamic fan system and optimization for multi-card SLI setups, the design should run noticeably cooler and quieter than earlier cards, NVIDIA said.
