Apple distributes e-mail reminding users of Ping
Only days after Apple quietly updated iTunes to bring more focus to its Ping service, the company has distributed an e-mail reminding users of the social networking features. The media software now provides options to recommend or comment on tracks that are currently playing, while the Recent Activity section includes communication from other Ping contacts.

Ancestry.com brings Family Tree Maker to Mac
Geneology site Ancestry.com today entered the Mac genealogy market by introducing Family Tree Maker for Mac. The site first entered the modern Apple market last January with its free Tree to Go application for existing Ancestry.com subscribers.

The 7th Guest coming to iPhone in December
Retro games continue to make their way to the iOS platform. One of the latest early-'90s games about to make its way to iOS is Trilobyte's FMV adventure/puzzle game, The 7th Guest. The company says it is due to come out sometime early next month.

Netbooks are being 'cannibalized,' says Windows GM
Tablet sales affecting netbooks? Seems everyone's been suggesting that lately, from Best Buy to ASUS, with much of the blame placed on Apple's iPad for mining the gap, so to speak. Apple Store Holiday Gift Guide now live
Apple has launched a 2010 Holiday Gift Guide in their US online store. The guide this year is designed to spotlight three segments: buying entertaining gifts, buying gifts for creative minds, and buying gifts for yourself.
Entertainment gifts include the Apple TV and Civilization V, while creative gifts include iLife '11, the Magic Trackpad, and Microsoft Office 2011. Gifts for yourself include a $400 Cole Haan Messenger Bag and a number of iPod docking speakers.
While all the items are marked at regular price, Apple typically offers Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts at the end of November.

Apple hat heute Abend bereits das zweite Update für iPhoto ‘11 (zum macprime-Review) veröffentlicht. iPhoto 9.1 ist 186 Megabyte gross und lässt sich über die Software-Aktualisierung herunterladen. Das Update verbessert gemäss Apple die Stabilität des Programms und behebt zahlreiche kleinere Fehler. Apple nennt insbesondere ein Problem, bei dem sich Videos von Flickr oder MobileMe nicht wunschgemäss importieren liessen. Darüber hinaus bietet iPhoto 9.1 einige neue Feiertags-Grusskartenthemen. Nikon D5000 discontinued
Retailers today gave clues that Nikon has formally phased out the D5000 from its lineup. Listings at B&H and other camera outlets have the entry-level DSLR marked as "discontinued," including in body-only and kit forms. Some stores, such as Amazon, still list cameras in stock.

Apple pushes out yet another iPhoto '11 update
Following an update last week to fix data loss and corruption, this latest bug fix adds some additional print product options and fixes what Apple calls "overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues."

Clearwire reports Q4 earnings: staff, marketing, stores, and handset plans all scaled back
Though it reported record growth in both revenue and subscriber count, Clearwire's bad news outweighed the good as it announced its fourth quarter earnings today. Here's the meat of it:

Panasonic Lumix GF2 preview
At first glance, sitting all on its lonesome like that, the GF2 might forgivably be perceived as just another mundanely incremental upgrade on what was already a lauded predecessor in the Lumix GF1. Clearwire slashes 15% of jobs, freezes smartphone plans
Clearwire today reported major losses that prompted it to take dramatic action and conserve its resources. After a net loss of $564.6 million, the 4G service said it would take "cash conservation measures" and cut 15 percent of its entire workforce. The plan will also see it delay plans for its own smartphones and stop development of future retail stores. It characterized itself as an "early-stage" network for whom losses were part of its growth phase, but it also warned that problems were immediate and that there were no guarantees it could survive past mid-2011.

Baird starts Apple tracking with $410 stock target
A Robert W. Baird analyst, William Power, has launched his firm's first coverage of Apple stock. The investment is being given an "Outperform" rating, and a $410 price target. "Apple has established itself as the unabashed premium provider in the burgeoning smart phone market," says Power. Out of some 77.1 million smartphones sold this summer, the iPhone accounted for 18.3 percent, defeating RIM's BlackBerry although still placing Apple devices behind Nokia's shrinking 34.4 percent.

Samsung wants 40m smartphones in 2011, hints 10-inch tablet
Samsung mobile lead Shin Jong-kyun told Japan's Nikkei BP today that the company expects to ship 40 million smartphones in 2011. The number would double the 20 million Samsung is hoping for this year. Most of its effort would lean on the Galaxy S, about 10 million of which could be sold through all of 2010.

Apple seeks patent on augmented reality gaming concept
An Apple patent application made public this week suggests some of the potential for gaming on the iPhone. Titled Interactive Gaming with Co-Located, Networked Direction and Location Aware Devices, the filing depicts an augmented reality system primarily combining the input of the iPhone's camera and motion sensors, including the accelerometer, GPS, compass and gyroscope. A gamer's location in the simulation could be determined and broadcast using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular transmitters.

Google Instant beta now available on iOS devices
Google's Instant search service is now up and running on its mobile sites as well -- when you hit up google.com on your iPhone or iPad's Mobile Safari browser, you'll see search results appear as you type your query in. As you probably know from using instant search in other browser, this is more of an average time saver than anything really revolutionary (and in some cases, I've even been bothered by early search results that weren't anywhere near what I was actually looking for). But anyone who really dislikes it can turn it off, and fans of the service should be happy to see it running on Mobile Safari.

Plextronics rolls out next-gen OLED ink, promises bigger, better OLED displays
A bottle of ink may not exactly seem like the key to bigger, better, and cheaper OLED displays, but that's just what Plextronics is promising will result from its new "next generation" Plexcore OC NQ ink. That's particularly notable because it's a non-aqueous, inkjet-printable ink, and is intended specifically for use with so-called solution-processed, phosphorescent OLED technology (as opposed to the vapor processing now commonly used), which at least some folks are betting on as the next big thing for OLED manufacturing -- recent tests have also shown significant advances for the technology, including a lower operating voltage and boost in lifetime over previously tested systems. Cupertino may not be ready to offer us USB 3.0 quite yet, but LaCie is. The company has announced the availability of both the USB 3.0 PCI Express Card and the USB 3.0 ExpressCard/34 with Mac compatibility.
To get things working, just install the free driver and pop in your card of choice. You'll be able to use any USB 3.0 compatible device with your Mac at will. Of course, your existing USB ports will continue to run at their default speed. These aren't magic cards, after all.

Google activates Instant for iOS users
Google is currently rolling out its Instant search technology to iOS users, reports say. By visiting the Google homepage on an iPhone or another Apple handheld, people should now be able to receive a rapid stream of web search results as they type. Gartner report tells corporations to get moving on the iPad
In a private report to clients, the Gartner research firm is urging CEOs to clear any obstacles preventing IT departments from taking advantage of the iPad.
Stephen Prentice, a VP and Gartner fellow, said in the report: "It is not usually the role of the CEO to get directly involved in specific technology device decisions, but Apple's iPad is an exception. It is more than just the latest consumer gadget. CEOs and business leaders should initiate a dialog with their CIOs about if they have not already done so."

Apple reportedly acknowledges MacBook Air bugs internally, promises fixes
Apple isn't acknowledging any of the apparent issues with the new MacBook Air publicly just yet, but BGR is reporting that it's heard from a source who says the company is at least now confirming some of the problems internally. New Apple patent suggests advanced iPhone gaming
A new Apple patent describes several interesting ideas for playing games with others in an augmented reality space. The patent, called "Interactive Gaming with Co-Located, Networked Direction and Location Aware Devices," describes an iPhone app that would network up a series of devices in the same real-world space and use the phone's hardware to track and show other players as the game is being played.
For example, players could use their devices as a "gun," and the GPS, gyroscope, and accelerometer in the iPhone would all work together to figure out if shots "fired" from one device would actually hit another. Consider a wireless, high-tech form of laser tag on a large scale.

Qualcomm in at least 10 dual-core tablets, mum on iPhone
Qualcomm when discussing its fiscal results revealed that it's heavily involved in dual-core tablets. At least 10 tablets would use dual-core Snapdragons, company president Steve Mollenkopf said. It was "difficult to say" if the segment would be very popular, he added, but Qualcomm was getting involved knowing that poorer countries and other segments wouldn't adopt tablets in the near future.

Business Insider is reporting that Apple has begun construction on a New York City-based office for members of the iAd team. Referring to information attained from "multiple sources," Dan Frommer says that the building will be in Manhattan near Union Square.

T-Mobile blames lack of iPhone for sluggish US sales
Deutsche Telekom's CEO Rene Obermann directly blamed the absence of the iPhone for the poor performance of T-Mobile USA. The carrier gained just 137,000 new subscribers in the summer, pushed mostly by prepaid users and not smartphones, leading Obermann to suggest that the absence of Apple was a factor. Network quality was important but didn't matter if the right devices weren't present, he said.

LaCie posts USB 3.0 driver for Macs
Storage maker LaCie has released a new Mac USB 3.0 driver. As no Mac ships with a USB 3.0-ready port by default, the driver can only support accessories on a Mac Pro equipped a LaCie PCI Express adapter, or a MacBook Pro with the company's ExpressCard/34 adapter. Skyfire pulls iPhone app from App Store due to overloaded servers
Just five hours into availability, high demand on Skyfire servers forced them to pull the Skyfire iOS app from the App Store. The company says its working to increase server capacity and will have a new group of apps available "soon." The $US2.99 app brought Flash video, in a roundabout way, to the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Here's how it worked.

Apple is setting up a new Manhattan office for its iAd sales team, several sources claim. The space is said to be located near Union Square, and should replace or complement an existing office in SoHo. The latter is actually a former home of Quattro Wireless, which Apple acquired for $275 million in order to found iAd. Droid Incredible getting V CAST Apps next week, whether you like it or not
Verizon has just announced that its lovely HTC Droid Incredible will be getting a fresh software update pushed over-the-air starting next week, and among the "software enhancements" will be the automatic installation of the carrier's V CAST Apps app store. Since this doesn't mean the Android Market is going away, we suppose it's not the end of the world -- and Verizon is quick to note that V CAST Apps supports carrier billing -- but the benefit of having two app stores on a phone is still anyone's guess. Intel Lightpeak: 10Gbps Netzwerke schon ab nächstem Jahr
Es scheint als hätte Intel endlich einen Plan für ihr neues Netzwerk Light Peak. 2011 sollen die ersten Geräte erscheinen. Auf CNET berichtet man, dass es dann schon losgehen soll. Report: fix for MacBook Air displays coming
There's good news for owners of the new MacBook Air. Boy Genius Report has reportedly obtained a memo stating that a fix is coming for that machine's display issues.
Several users report that colors are fading light to dark repeatedly after the machine wakes from sleep. Apple has not acknowledged the issue formally, but the memo obtained by BGR suggests that its engineers are aware of it and working on a fix. Expect to see it in a forthcoming software update.

Recent intel suggests that Motorola's Droid 2 Global will be coming in two colors -- kind of a strange choice for a phone being tagged as "business-grade" -- and now, it looks like we can expect to see at least one of those colors on next Thursday, November 11th. Plex running on a jailbroken Apple TV
That didn't take long. Shortly after the Apple TV was successfully jailbroken, someone has gotten Plex up and running. For now, it's quite buggy (see a video after the break) and limited to video, which means no photos or music. But hey, it's running!
Plex is a media center for the Mac, and pulls content from several online sources, like Netflix, Hulu and Major League Baseball as well as local iTunes and iPhoto libraries.
About a week ago, we saw a 3rd party app for the jailbroken Apple TV that displayed the weather. Let us say good work to the industrious folks who are getting this done.

Samsung Galaxy S launch in Japan doesn't beat iPhone 4
Samsung's launch of the Galaxy S in Japan wasn't enough to upset Apple's total iPhone sales, Japan's BCN said today. A launch at NTT DoCoMo on October 28 was enough to make the Android phone the top-selling individual cellphone in the country, above the 32GB iPhone 4, but wasn't enough to oust the iPhone 4 when the 16GB model was factored in. Warner Music Group executive joins Apple
Apple has hired Elliott Peters, a senior vice president and head of digital legal affairs at Warner Music Group, as the "corporate attorney director for iTunes Europe and Internet services, based in Luxembourg, where he will manage the European legal team for iTunes and MobileMe services," according to a WMG internal memo obtained by Billboard.
The memo, sent by Paul Robinson, WMG General Counsel, states that "Elliott [Peters] has had a hand in almost every major WMG digital deal" since becoming the company's "first digital lawyer" in 2003, though Peters has been with WMG since 2000.

Oracle macht MySQL empfindlich teurer
Oracle hat sich offenbar dazu entschlossen, die Basis-Variante seiner Open-Source-Datenbank MySQL aus dem Portfolio zu streichen. Das im Januar von Oracle übernommene Sun hatte bisher eine 600-Dollar-Version für Kleinunternehmen angeboten. A beta version of Skype 5.0 for Mac has been released, and it includes not only some new features like group video chat, but also becomes more Mac-like by putting all of the information and controls in one window. The existing Skype client scatters windows hither and yon; one for chat, one for a list of contacts, and so on.
The Mac Address Book is now integrated with Skype, so you no longer have to keep a separate contact list for the app. Adding new contacts is much simpler than before, requiring just a search and single click to include them in your list of Skype users. Apple nimmt Mac-Programme für den App Store ab sofort entgegen
Seit heute können registrierte Mac-Entwickler ihre Programme bei Apple für den Mac App Store einreichen. Ähnlich wie beim bekannten App Store für das iPhone und das iPad werden die eingereichten Programme von Apple überprüft. Apps, die gegen Apples Richtlinien verstossen, bleiben aussen vor. Allerdings bildet der App Store auf der Mac-Plattform lediglich eine Erweiterung der Vertriebsmöglichkeiten, Programme können weiterhin auch über die gewohnten Kanäle vertrieben werden. Der Mac App Store wurde vor zwei Wochen angekündigt und soll innert 90 Tagen eröffnet werden. Entwickler, die ihre Programme über den App Store anbieten, erhalten eine Umsatzbeteiligung von 70 Prozent.

Although it hasn't spoken up publicly, Apple is internally aware of reported problems with the 2010 MacBook Air, a source says. The person points to leaked internal documents, which make it clear that the company knows about two graphics glitches. In one, an Air's screen may flicker or display lines with different colors when waking from sleep, or after hotplugging an external monitor. In the other, a screen may repeatedly fade from dark to light colors after coming out of sleep.

Telekom bestätigt Jahresprognose nach solidem Quartal
Die Deutsche Telekom hat im dritten Quartal Rückgänge bei Umsatz und operativem Gewinn verzeichnet. Ohne die britische Mobilfunktochter T-Mobile UK, die seit dem Zusammenschluss mit Orange UK nicht mehr in der Bilanz aufgeführt wird, sank der Konzernumsatz im Jahresvergleich um 4,1 Prozent von 16,3 auf 15,6 Milliarden Euro. Skyfire hat mit Flash App mit Serverüberlastungen zu kämpfen!

Debunk: Verizon's 'iconic device' is Droid Pro, not iPhone
Rumors briefly sparked overnight of an early Verizon iPhone launch that were discredited today with a countering leak. Following a memo that an "Iconic Device" would start pre-orders at Verizon on November 9, speculation had surfaced at TUAW that it was an Apple handset; the device has since been revealed to be the Motorola Droid Pro. You have different colored balls falling from the top of the screen, and you've got to line them up with balls of the same color to make them disappear and score points. Swisscom senkt Preise für mobiles Surfen im Ausland
Per 1. Dezember wird Swisscom die Preise für Datenroaming deutlich senken. Der weltweite Einheitspreis wird durch Tagespakete mit Inklusivvolumen ersetzt. In Europa beispielsweise bezahlt man künftig noch CHF 7.- für ein Datenvolumen von fünf Megabyte, wobei das Tagespaket 24 Stunden lang gültig ist. Bisher waren im EU-Raum CHF 10.- pro Megabyte angefallen. Bleibt man unterhalb des Paketpreises, so verrechnet die Swisscom neu einen Tarif von CHF 0.30 pro 30 KB. Wer die Option «World Option Flex» verwendet, erhält ein Inklusivvolumen von CHF 10.-. Um Kunden vor unerwartet hohen Rechnungen zu schützen, wird die Swisscom das Datenroaming ab einer bestimmten, individuell festlegbaren Limite unterbinden.

Apple könnte 2011 bis zu 100 Millionen iPhones verkaufen
Analysten erwarten, dass Apple auch im Jahr 2011 ein rasantes Wachstum im iPhone- und iPad-Geschäft erreichen wird. AppleInsider zitiert einen Branchenkenner, welcher Apples Fertigungskapazitäten analysiert hat und zum Schluss kam, dass Apple im Jahr 2011 bis zu 100 Millionen iPhones herstellen und verkaufen könnte. Zusätzlich könnten Apples Zulieferer bis zu 48 Millionen iPads produzieren. Diese Zahl ist jedoch mit Vorsicht zu geniessen, gemäss bisherigen Schätzungen dürfte Apple nächstes Jahr nicht mehr als rund 25 Millionen iPads verkaufen. Variant of "Boonana"/"Koobface" trojan surfaces
The SecureMac team along with ESet Security have identified a new variant of the trojan horse malware they call "Boonana" (Intego and other firms refer to it as a form of the Windows trojan "Koobface," for reasons SecureMac disputes) that uses even crueler trickery in an attempt to convince users to install it. Electronics polling firm Retrevo's latest survey of 1,000 consumer electronics buyers judges that smartphones, iPads and Windows 7 have been the the big "winners" of public approval, while 3D HDTVs, GPS devices and netbooks have fallen out of favor or failed to live up to their hype. HTTP is "broken" with critical DDOS flaw, say researchers
Researchers from Proactive Risk, an IT security firm, will demonstrate at an upcoming application security conference a systemic flaw in the HTTP protocol that can easily be exploited through online gaming and other activities into distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks that can flood web servers -- even through secure connections -- with very slow "POST" traffic that is difficult to distinguish from legitimate traffic, making it hard to prevent.

Analyst: Apple to sell 100 million iPhones, 48 million iPads in 2011
If Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair is right, 2011 is going to be the year an avalanche of iPhone and iPads sweep the globe. Blair released a forecast on Tuesday predicting that Apple will sell 100 million iPhones in 2011. He's basing those numbers on the fact that Apple thinks it will have a 100% increase in YOY iPhone sales in 2011. Since Apple produced 48-50 million iPhones in 2010, that means a production run and supposed sell-through rate of 100 million iPhones in 2011. Apple now accepting submissions for Mac App Store
Apple has apparently notified developers that it is now accepting submissions for the upcoming Mac App Store. An email to devs from Apple has links on how to set up an iTunes Connect account and the associated certificates. Developers can send apps in right now to have them ready for the approval process for the new Mac App Store. There's no word yet on which developers are jumping on this, but I'm sure we'll find out when the store goes live soon which developers took advantage of this opportunity right away.

A new update has been released for both iPhone ($20) and iPad ($40) versions of FileMaker Go. The software allows users to update FileMaker Pro and Server databases, locally or remotely, using both Wi-Fi and 3G connections. The free update adds five new language translations, including French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese, as well as the ability to restore solutions from hibernation by entering the same account name and password once. Garmin cuts losses, formally quits smartphones
Garmin while discussing its summer fiscal results today confirmed that it was quitting the smartphone business. The company decided after considering its position that it "annot reach the scale necessary" to compete with others in smartphones and was shutting down its efforts. Staff involved in research and development would be moved to the in-car GPS team and other areas where the company was still growing, it said.

MacTech 2010: Andy Ihnatko on the coming of Lion
Commentator Andy Ihnatko took the stage at this week's MacTech conference here in Los Angeles today to give the conference keynote. In his talk, Ihnatko spoke about the upcoming new version of OS X, Lion, and specifically three different features of it.
First, he talked about the Mac App Store, and what he thought would be the outcome of Apple bringing an App Store system to its desktop platform. Free Realms now available for Mac, Civ V gets a date
Sony's Free Realms MMO is now available on the Mac. It was promised that it would be earlier this year, and sure enough, you can now download and play the free-to-play online game for yourself on Apple's platform. The port is courtesy of Transgaming, but the game's not all that tasking, so you should be good to go. And while the aesthetic of the game is pretty kid-friendly, it's actually a lot of fun -- besides the usual combat and leveling, you can do things like kart racing and crafting throughout the world as well.

More car apps for iPhone, Android: Audi, GM models
In addition to the three GM iPhone and Android apps for OnStar, myCadillac and myChevrolet already reported last week, the company (which just today filed for a public stock offering) has released two more apps for the iOS and Android systems -- myBuick and myGMC, due to be released this week.
