id's Carmack: no Rage yet for Android or WP7, iPhone details

id Software co-founder John Carmack this weekend has revealed in a pair of updates that there aren't any current plans to bring Rage on mobile to either Android or Windows Phone 7. While he said he would "take a stab" at Android, he explained that the Doom developer wasn't pledging itself to creating a port for Google's OS; he implied later that time constraints were an issue. Dropping WP7 was a technical issue, however: the likelihood of a port for Microsoft were "very low" since he couldn't write in C++ language like he could elsewhere.

What, you didn't think Apple was just going to sit around and take it after Motorola first sued for patent infringement and then asked to court to declare some 20 of Cupertino's patents weren't applicable to its products, did you? Redbox confirms streaming in 2011, may not follow Netflix

Movie kiosk operator Redbox has confirmed in a conference call late this week that it's planning to offer Internet movie streaming in 2011. The CEO of parent company Coinstar, Paul Davis, explained that there were talks with a "number of highly interested parties" hoping to start a Redbox Internet service in 2011. Physical rentals were still to be a core feature, but Internet video was a "significant opportunity," Davis said.

OnStar's MyLink smartphone apps now available on Android and iOS

Looking to spend a little quality time with your ride this weekend? If you just plunked down for a 2011 Chevrolet or Cadillac, and you just so happen to own an Android or iOS-based phone, you can now download the myChevrolet, myCadillac, and OnStar MyLink mobile phone apps that were duly introduced last month. Apple countersues Motorola over multi-touch patents

Apple late Friday responded to Motorola's lawsuit by filing two countersuits of its own. The complaints accuse Motorola of violating six patents primarily relating to multi-touch but also to graphical interfaces. Most of Motorola's currently shipping Android-based devices are covered, including the Droid, Droid 2 and Droid X, as well as the Backflip, Charm, Cliq, Cliq XT, Devour and i1.

Growing up, election night in my house was always how I imagined the Super Bowl to be for most people. We huddled around the TV and excitedly watched the incoming results with hope and trepidation. But of course election night just isn't a silly game, and the final "score" literally affects hundreds of millions of people, sometimes for decades. Microsoft buying gesture recognition chipmaker Canesta

Microsoft today bought chip designer Canesta in what's believed to be a strategy to move gesture recognition to the PC. The deal will give access to a processing system, CanestaVision, that can convert the image from a camera's CMOS sensor into 3D data for gestures with depth.
