London underground to get Wi-Fi
UK provider BT has announced it will hold Wi-Fi trials at the Charing Cross underground subway station in London, the BBC reported on Friday. The six-month technical test will be free for BT broadband customers and those with free Wi-Fi minutes at the ticket hall, Bakerloo and Northern line platform. The trial will kick off on November 1.

News: Sprint: iPad driving wireless hotspot demand
In an interview with GigaOM, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse indicated that despite not selling the iPad, his company has actually benefited from Apple’s tablet device in the form of increased demand for its Overdrive MiFi wireless hotspots. Hesse notes that most iPads being sold are Wi-Fi only models and many customers turn to MiFi devices to get online when away from traditional wireless access points. 3G now available on Mount Everest
Happen to be climbing Mount Everest in the near future? Take heart -- you can probably use your iPhone there now. Provider Teliasonera has reportedly installed a 3G antenna at the base camp of Everest, connecting the remote location to a modern cell phone network for the first time. Previously, climbers had to use satellite phones to stay in touch with the rest of the world, and according to Reuters, the summit is still off limits -- the highest video call was made from an elevation of about 17,388 feet, which is where most climbers begin their journey to the summit at 29,035 feet.

The PlayStation Phone: new photos, more details!
We've gotten our hands on some more images of the PlayStation Phone, and gleaned a few more juicy details about the handset. Firstly, as you can see in the photos, the model in question does indeed seem to be codenamed "Zeus" (as we reported on the 27th). Furthermore, the handset pictured is running Android 2.2, though apparently there are multiple devices out there with different versions on board (including at least one packed with Android 3.0). Urbanears puts out iPhone-friendly Plattan Plus headphones
Urbanears has just introduced the Plattan Plus headphones, which carry the Made for iPhone tag. Like other headphones from the company, they sport a built-in microphone and in-line remote, but add volume control buttons. Based on the Plattan headphones, the new product shares a fabric cord, adjustable headband and its own exclusive zound-plug that lets other users plug into one earcup and listen to the same music.

Microsoft rumored running iPad team
One of Microsoft's California offices has a team dedicated to the iPad, iPhoneDevCamp founder Raven Zachary overheard today. Two Microsoft employees in Seattle were heard discussing an "iPad group" present in the state. It wasn't certain from the conversation whether it was a group studying the iPad or writing apps.

China's new online Apple Store sells out of iPhone 4s for on day one
Just 24 hours into business, China's first online Apple Store has sold its entire stock of iPhone 4s. Writing for The Global Times, Wang Xinyuan says, "Apple Inc's new online Chinese-language store was a big hit with consumers Wednesday after it sold out its entire stock of iPhone 4s on the first day."
Apple hopes to tap into China's fast-growing online shopping market, which saw business of 120 billion yuan (about US$17.91 billion as of this writing) worth of transactions in the third quarter of this year.

CrystalRoc Galaxy Tab: 5,700 Swarovski crystals, zero shame
We can only assume that Stuart Hughes will eventually one-up it with a gold-plated, diamond-encrusted model of its own but, for the time being, it looks like this new CrystalRoc Galaxy Tab is the most "exclusive" Android tablet around. While there's no word on a price (we assume it's on a need to know basis), CrystalRoc does proudly boast that the tablet packs 5,700 Swarosvski bright crystals, not to mention a custom logo to match. Condé Nast has released an update to its Gourmet Live app addressing the serious iPad crashes reported earlier this week. Ratings missing from the App Store?
A few readers have notified us that app ratings have disappeared entirely from the App Store in iTunes. The ratings still appear on the iOS App Stores and in browser previews of apps, but for the desktop iTunes view of the App Store, they are nowhere to be found.
iTunes Connect was apparently down for a little while last night, but it's been down before and ratings have never vanished from the iTunes App Store. More likely than not, the ratings and reviews will reappear in the iTunes App Store soon; it's just odd that Apple hasn't sent a note out to developers about this.Ratings missing from the App Store? originally appeared on

Microsoft also declares record revenue, but Apple still on top
Apple isn't the only technology company that's posting record revenue this year -- Microsoft has brought in $16.20 billion in the last quarter, which stands as a record with a 25 percent increase from the same time last year. The Seattle giant also increased net income to $5.41 billion, so it looks like Halo Reach (in September) and Office 2010 (in July) sent things in a good direction.

Sony call strongly hints at PlayStation phone, tablet
Sony during the call discussing its latest results has strongly hinted that the company is developing a PlayStation phone. Without mentioning the device itself, the company said the hardware would be delivered from the Network Services group that handles both computers and the PlayStation brand. It's also moving Sony Computer Entertainment, the PlayStation division, into the Sony City headquarters to "better incorporate" it with the planning teams for a mystery product.

Transparent material developed that's twice as strong as Kevlar, infinitely weirder
Scientists in Israel have developed a transparent material with "the hardest organic nanostructure known to man," according to Discovery News. Based on artificial proteins similar to (and simpler than) the beta-amlyoid proteins that have been linked to Alzheimer's disease, and covered with transparent nanospheres, the new material is very, very strong: in order to cut it, a diamond-tipped probe would have to apply twice the pressure it would take to cut Kevlar. Apple grabs 47 percent of Q3 cellphone industry profits
Apple took home 47 percent of the cellphone industry's operating profits during the third quarter of 2010, a Canaccord Genuity analysis notes. The figure is vastly disproportionate to the company's actual marketshare, measured at 3.9 percent. If considered together, a combined force of Apple, RIM and HTC accounted for 71 percent of profits.

I've been using the Mail app in Mac OS X for a good four or five years now. I thought I pretty much knew most of how to use it, but today I've been pleasantly surprised. I've just stumbled across a nifty little feature that I hadn't known about before, and it's going to make a small, but significant improvement to the way I do email in Mail app.
In replying to an email in Mail.app, when you hit the reply button all the text from that email is inserted into the reply message (like all other email clients). However, having just been sifting through a rather complex message & trying to decipher a few key areas, I selected a specific portion of text to copy and insert

Redbox announces plans to enter streaming business next year
It may not be quite the same obvious transition that Netflix made, but it looks like DVD kiosk company Redbox will soon be making a push of its own into the streaming business. That word comes straight from the CEO of parent company Coinstar, Paul Davis, who told listeners to the company's recent earnings call that it is in "detailed negotiations with a number of highly interested parties" to launch a "Redbox-branded" streaming service sometime next year. GeForce GTX 580 full specs, photos leak out
Details of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 have spilled out in earnest today with a pair of Chinese leaks. Specs have emerged from Chiphell that back the notion of it having 512 processing cores (CUDA cores) but add that it would have a 772MHz core clock and 2GHz memory. It would have more memory bandwidth at 192.4GB, but contrary to rumors it would still use a 384-bit memory bus and rely mostly on brute force to run faster.

Found Footage: iPhone costume update includes working 40" LCD
In 2007, we saw the first generation iPhone in some comically large costumes (video on the next page). Last year we brought you the footage of Reko and John sporting giant TV screens with jailbroken iPhones powering the costumes. News: Fortune confirms Verizon iPhone, notes it may be CDMA only
Fortune has provided additional confirmation of a Verizon iPhone launching in early 2011. Earnings calls aren't usually that interesting, and that's doubly true when trying to listen via official translators. Still, we couldn't help but give an ear to Sony's fiscals, and sure enough, someone asked about our (still real) PlayStation Phone leak. Apple is now the fourth-largest phone maker worldwide
Well that was fast. In just three years, Apple has become the forth-largest phone maker worldwide. According to an IDC report, Apple moved into the 4th position in the 3rd quarter of 2010, overtaking competitor Research In Motion (RIM). As of IDC's report, the top vendors are, in order:

GM, OnStar post Android and iPhone car control apps
GM and OnStar today sent word that their promised remote control apps have arrived for both Android and iOS devices. The free myChevrolet, myCadillac and OnStar MyLink (all App Store links) titles try to cover every aspect of driving. They can remotely unlock, start or sound the horn on the car as well as access information from the car itself, such as the fuel and oil levels, the tire pressure and the odometer.

Android 2.1 starts rolling out to Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 line this weekend

Costco to drop iTunes gift card sales on Saturday
Bulk retailer Costco will drop sales of discounted iTunes cards as of this Saturday, a report claims. A source for iLounge remarks that while it's uncertain if the decision will affect all Costco outlets worldwide, it should impact all North American locations. The move is thought to be an extension of a continuing row with Apple over the iPad, which is absent from Costco stores but which Apple did allow at other big-box retailers like Best Buy, Walmart and Target.

Verizon outs tiered data plans, keeps unlimited phone data
As reported earlier in October, Verizon Wireless has introduced new tiered data plans for both cellphones and now tablets. The plans are close to what was predicted earlier, and include a new lightweight $15 per month, 150MB plan that will cost another $15 for another 150MB used, with a $30 unlimited plan still available. The pricing gives less data than AT&T on the low end but doesn't impose the same 2GB cap of AT&T's maximum $25 plan.

How the iPad is benefiting Sprint's mobile broadband sales
Sprint recently noticed an increase in sales of its Overdrive (3g/4g) MiFi wireless hotspot, and it seems the iPad is behind it all. In an interview with GigaOM, Sprint's chief executive officer, Dan Hesse, noted that most iPads sold are Wi-Fi only. Since their introduction, his company has seen an increase in sales of the Overdrive.

Facebook will an Interessen von Freunden ausgerichtete Werbung patentieren
Wie erst jetzt bekannt wurde, hat Facebook Anfang des Monats eine neue Werbeform namens "Inferential Ad-Targeting" (zu Deutsch etwa "schlussfolgernde Zielgruppenansprache") zum Patent angemeldet. Die Idee dahinter: Werbeanzeigen sollen auf die Interessen der Freunde eines Anwenders abgestimmt werden. Offenbar will Facebook so auch jene Nutzer zielgerichtet mit Werbung ansprechen, deren Profile nicht genügend Informationen für eine herkömmliche Zielgruppenanalyse hergeben.

OmniVision tapped as supplier for next-gen iPad's camera

Calculator's currency calculations currently kaput
OS X's built-in Calculator.app has built-in support for currency conversions. To get accurate results, you have to update the currency exchange rates from inside the application.
This feature is currently broken for many users, as I discovered after it wouldn't work for me. Several threads on the Apple Discussion forums show this is a "known issue" with no known fix at this time. This seems to be happening to users of both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Sony posts $852m profit: PS3, PC sales up
Sony got itself back in black with a $293m profit last quarter courtesy of improved PS3 and Bravia sales, and the good times continue: the company just posted a second-quarter profit of ¥68.7b ($852m). UBS: Component plans boost evidence of CDMA iPhone
Industry data backs the possibility of a CDMA iPhone, according to UBS' Maynard Um. Ingram Micro selling iPad to enterprise
Ingram Micro has been given Apple's permission to sell iPads to enterprise customers, according to the former's CEO, Greg Spierkel. "What it's telling us is that there's a (business to business) opportunity starting to develop for these devices, which is not necessarily where they were targeted initially," he tells Reuters in an interview. Now that iPhone 4 sales in Germany have passed from the exclusive realm of T-Mobile to O2 and Vodafone as well, AppleInsider reports that customers there can also opt for a carrier-free version of the superphone. Intel, Samsung, Toshiba form consortium aiming for 10nm chips by 2016
There isn't much to say here, so let's just get on with the facts: Intel, Samsung, and Toshiba are joining forces and pooling R&D efforts in a consortium funded in part by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (an expected 50 percent, or 5 billion yen / US $62 million) and the rest from the members. Microsoft giving all 89,000 workers Windows Phone 7 devices
Microsoft Windows Phone executive Guy Gilbert overnight revealed that every Microsoft employee is getting a Windows Phone 7 device. While he didn't say which devices were going out, the group leader said all 89,000 core workers would have a phone. ASUS Tablets: Android und Windows Pläne offiziell

Im Dezember wird es bei ASUS mit Tablets in allen möglichen Formfaktoren losgehen. 7, 9, 10 und 12-Zoll werden laut Jerry Shen kommen. Das 12-Zoll Modell wird mit Windows laufen und im Januar auf dem Markt sein und bekam in der Entwicklung obendrein Unterstützung vom Microsoft Team selbst, damit Touch auf Windows mal etwas mehr Schwung bekommt. Im März kommen dann zwei 7-Zoll Tablets und zwei 9-Zoll Tablets (eins mit ARM Tegra 2 und Android und ein weiteres mit Windows). Wann der 10-Zoller erscheint ist noch nicht so klar.

Apple bereits viertgrösster Mobiltelefonhersteller
Apple ist weltweit bereits der viertgrösste Mobiltelefonhersteller. Zu diesem Schluss kommt eine IDC-Studie, welcher die Verkaufszahlen zwischen Juli und September 2010 zugrunde liegen. In diesem Zeitraum verkaufte Apple 14.1 Millionen iPhones und kam damit auf einen Marktanteil von 4.1 Prozent. Gemessen nach Stückzahlen zählte Apple bisher nicht zu den fünf grössten Herstellern. IDC betont, dass mit Apple auf Rang vier und RIM auf Rang 5 nun bereits zwei der fünf grössten Hersteller reine Smartphone-Anbieter sind. Es wird erwartet, dass das Smartphone-Geschäft weiterhin an Bedeutung für die Mobilfunkindustrie hinzugewinnen wird. Insgesamt wurden im dritten Quartal 2010 weltweit 340.5 Millionen Handys verkauft, verglichen mit 297.1 Millionen in Jahr 2009 entspricht dies einem Wachstum von fast 15 Prozent. Sprint CEO says iPad helpful, unusually mum on iPhone
Sprint has been reaping the rewards of the iPad even without an official deal, carrier chief Dan Hesse said in an interview that also raised eyebrows over iPhone discussions. The CEO noted that most iPads were Wi-Fi versions and that he had seen a boost to sales of the Sierra Wireless Overdrive. The pocket router is good for getting the iPad online away from home, he told GigaOM. Handymarkt legt im dritten Quartal um 14,6 Prozent zu

Software-Updates: Mac Pro Firmware, Logic 9.1.3
Apple hat gestern insgesamt fünf Software-Updates veröffentlicht. Besitzern eines aktuellen Mac Pro empfielt Apple das zwei Megabyte grosse Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5. Gleichzeitig gab Apple die Firmware Restoration CD 1.9 (22 MB) zum Zurücksetzen der Firmware frei. Für Logic-Anwender gibt es das Update auf Logic Pro 9.1.3 (193 MB) respektive Logic Express 9.1.3 (140 MB). Das Update verbessert insbesondere die Geschwindigkeit auf Mac Pros mit sechs und zwölf Prozessorkernen. Zu guter Letzt hat Apple auch eine neue Version des MobileMe Control Panels für Windows veröffentlicht (6 MB).

WiFi-only Galaxy Tab stops by the FCC for tea
$599 is a bit pricey for a seven-inch tablet, and while you can get $200 off that at some places by signing your life away to a data contract, that really isn't any fun either. Thankfully Samsung appears to have another option with what looks to be the $499, WiFi-only model that showed up in a Best Buy flier earlier this week. ASUS plans slew of ARM and Intel tablets in early 2011
Asus company president Jerry Shen has detailed a raft of tablets that it plans to begin launching from December this year. The tablets will ship in a range of sizes including, seven-, 10- and 12-inches and should be powered by ARM-based processors or Intel Atom chips depending on the OS. The first to hit the market will be the Intel- and Windows-powered 12-inch EP121 tablet that also included product development input from Microsoft, which added enhancements to touch control and the interface.

MobileMe may be Apple's least "green" product, packaging-wise
When I purchased my MacBook Pro in early 2008, I threw down US$69 for a .Mac (now known as MobileMe) membership. I expected to get an email confirmation of my .Mac order (which I did), followed shortly by another email with an activation code.
Instead, I received the hot mess you see in the pic above (US size 9.5 shoe included for scaling purposes). First, a huge FedEx package, about the same size as the current MacBook's packaging. Rattling around inside of it was a cardboard box with .Mac emblazoned on the front, large enough to fit a CD or DVD inside. But instead of a CD or DVD, I found a small paper booklet with a sticker on the front page containing my activation code. In all, it was about a pound of packaging (at least) for something that really didn't need to be mailed to me at all.

Wir geben zu, all zu viel wird man aus dem Touchscreen auf 8.848 Metern Höhe nicht mehr rausholen können, aber mal eben ein paar Schnappschüsse realtime von der Gipfelsafari auf Flickr schiessen und sinnlose Tweets verbreiten ist doch auch schon was wert. Acer Liquid Metal gets official in the UK with Android 2.2 and Breeze UI
After seeing quite a few leaks, Acer just made its Liquid Metal handset official. The 3.6-inch slate runs Android 2.2 Froyo atop an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 processor. Inside all that molten metal you'll find 802.11n WiFi, support for 14.4Mbps HSDPA, DLNA/UPnP streaming support, an image stabilized 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash capable of recording video at 720p (30fps) with Dolby Surround. Das US-Marktforschungsunternehmen IDC hat aktuelle Zahlen für den Handy-Markt vorgelegt. Demnach sind die weltweiten Verkäufe im dritten Quartal 2010 im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum um 14,6 Prozent gestiegen. IDC: Apple passes RIM to become fourth largest mobile phone vendor globally as Nokia, LG, and Sony Ericsson struggle
Can you remember the day when Apple's audacious plan to sell 10 million iPhones in its first year was greeted with extreme skepticism within the cellphone industry. Now the computer company is shipping 14.1 million handsets every three months according to the latest IDC numbers, moving Apple into fourth place on its Top 5 list of mobile phone vendors worldwide. That moves Apple ahead of RIM thus confirming a Steve Jobs boast made during Apple's Q4 earnings calls. Apple now 4th largest phone maker worldwide
Apple is now large enough to be the fourth largest phone manufacturer of any kind, IDC found tonight. A near doubling to14.1 million iPhones was enough to push it to 4.1 percent of the entire market, both ahead of RIM's BlackBerry but also long established phone makers like Motorola and Sony Ericsson, both of whom were now out of the top five. Samsung Q3 results up on phones, iPads
Samsung today reported a significant increase in profit that was driven as much by Apple as by its own business. The company's revenue surged 12 percent year-to-year to $35.78 billion with a 17 percent hike in profit to $3.97 billion, but most of this profit came from its semiconductor business and its success with flash memory. Apple releases Mac Pro EFI firmware update, restoration CD
Apple has released a firmware update and restoration CD download for certain Mac Pro systems. EFI firmware v1.5 addresses an issue that caused problems when displaying the firmware password prompt. The update also resolves a problem that prevented the Boot Picker from being presented when a user connected the computer to an Ethernet network without DHCP.

NetTalk iPhone app offers free US/Canada calls
NetTalk.com, a low-cost VOIP competitor to services such as Skype, Vonage and MagicJack, is offering a free app through iTunes that enables iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users the chance to call phone numbers throughout the US and Canada at no cost -- even using a conference call function. Found Footage: Reggie Watts and his iPhone rock Sirius XM
Comedian/musician/mad genius Reggie Watts found himself sans equipment (seems to be going around) when he was being interviewed on Sirius XM radio, but that didn't slow him down one bit. He pulled out his iPhone 4, and using a looping app (possibly Everyday Looper, $5.99) he improvised a number that absolutely wowed host Ron Bennington and the rest of the folks in the studio. Medtronic debuts tiny lead-less pacemaker at TEDMED 2010
There are two pacemakers in the picture above. There's the typical clunky, stone shaped device with wires on the right -- and on the left, a device dwarfed even by a one-cent coin. This is the Medtronic wireless pacemaker, just revealed at TEDMED 2010, which can be implanted directly into your heart via catheter and permanently latch itself into flesh with tiny claws. AmpliTube 2 for iPhone unleashed: adds SpeedTrainer
IK MultiMedia have released a major new update to their guitar recording and effects application for iPhone, AmpliTube. The new v2 improves the sound quality of gear and cabinets, imports songs from the iTunes Library as backing tracks, and now includes the ability to slow down or speed up imported songs without affecting the pitch in a new feature called SpeedTrainer. FaceTime "hacktivated" in Middle Eastern countries

Google Nexus Two may be Samsung Galaxy S with front camera
The recently uncovered Nexus Two may be a relatively modest phone if unveiled next week, a reported hands-on with a prototype hinted this evening. Backing rumors that the phone is made by Samsung, a source with purported access described it as resembling a touch-only Galaxy S but with a front camera and tapering on both the front and back. It may go so far as to include the same four-inch Super AMOLED screen, Gizmodo was told, but the build quality would be a step down from the Nexus One's metal to glossy plastic.

HTC HD7 is hitting T-Mobile November 8th for $200... but it's hitting Amazon for $30 less
Yes, true: T-Mobile announced last week by way of Twitter that it would be retailing the HD7 on November 8th -- the same day as AT&T's Samsung Focus and HTC Surround -- for $199.99 on contract. Thing is, it turns out that AmazonWireless is going to be selling it for $169.99 on contract which, by our calculations, is $30 less for the same product! Obviously, it's the norm for retailers like Amazon and Wirefly to charge less for phones on new two-year deals than their first-party counterparts -- but what's notable here is that Amazon will be undercutting T-Mobile by a nice little margin on day one. After iLife '11: Alternatives to iDVD and iWeb
Over the weekend TUAW is going to be featuring in-depth reviews of the new iLife '11 suite -- or at least the three apps that were updated. As most of you know by now, iWeb and iDVD didn't receive an update at all. In light of that, we've compiled a list of several alternatives to iDVD and iWeb that you may want to try out. From a purely consumer standpoint, I don't think any of these apps offer the ease of use that Apple has so successfully built into iWeb and iDVD, but given that iDVD seems all but abandoned -- as should the MacBook optical drive be -- and the future is uncertain for iWeb, it's always nice

Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5 released
Apple has released EFI Firmware Update 1.5 for the Mac Pro. The update is recommended for all Mac Pro (Mid 2010) models and addresses an issue that prevented the firmware password prompt from being displayed as well as another issue that prevented the Boot Picker from being presented if Ethernet is connected to a network without DHCP.

Microsoft: not seeing a shift to tablets despite iPad
Microsoft during the call discussing its latest fiscal results claimed that the iPad wasn't having an effect on computer sales. Investor relations GM Bill Koefoed dodged around mentioning Apple by name but said Microsoft had "not seen a shift" from notebooks towards tablets. He didn't say how Microsoft could prove this but saw overall PC sales up between nine and 11 percent in the summer, with work PCs up about 15 percent.

Google testing real-time friend tracking on Android
Google today rolled out a new version of Latitude in Google Maps that has introduced an experimental real-time tracker feature. The option lets users choose to "temporarily" get live updates from individual friends. Attempts to play Kinect early can result in headaches, nausea, and an acute lack of Xbox Live
Our friends at Joystiq are reporting that receiving an early Kinect unit or a Kinect title is cause for caution and adult supervision, not celebration. Turns out if you attempt to play the game, the Xbox will offer you an update, and if you accept, you'll get pushed an early version of the new Dashboard that not only won't work with Kinect, but also won't let you sign into Xbox Live.
