Walgreens selling $100 Maylong iPad clone
Walgreens has quietly become one of the few chains selling a readily available Android tablet through a posting discovered by Chris and other Electronista readers. The Maylong M-150 would be an extreme budget entry at just $100 and would be a Chinese clone exploiting the popularity of the iPad up to and including a render that appears to simply be a modified iPad image. Its custom UI is based heavily on Apple's, including the app shelf at the bottom.

Apple, Gemalto working on integrated SIM for next iPhone?
Moving from regular SIMs to micro SIMs for the iPad and iPhone 4 was a fairly user-hostile move on Apple's part, seeing how it made moving between an iPhone and virtually any other GSM device quite a bit more difficult; the official explanation (for the iPhone 4, anyway) was that there simply wasn't room for a regular SIM, but that seems unlikely considering that you're only saving 10mm of length, 3mm of width, and 0mm of thickness. A more plausible scenario is that Apple viewed micro SIMs as a way to get ahead of the industry curve a bit and make it unpleasant for users to try to share an iPhone line with other devices, a concept that gets at the core of Apple's mantra of owning the entire

Future European iPhones could carry custom SIM cards
Apple is working with SIM card maker Gemalto in order to produce a custom card for iPhones, sources inside European carriers claim. The technology would allow Europeans to buy an iPhone via the web or an Apple Store, and get it activated using an App Store download rather than a visit to a carrier store, or calling a carrier directly. The card would be integrated into the phone itself, GigaOM hears.

Roku makes hardware and software available to license, embedded TVs can't be far out

We may have to rethink our original stance comparing Warner's DVD2Blu trade-up program to a particular Maine shop owner, now that it's announced it will accept any DVD (only studio releases sold at retail and no porn, please) as trade towards one of its selection of 105 Blu-ray releases with most priced at $4.95 each. Report: HTML5 web video usage doubled in 5 months
MeFeedia realsed a report today that isn't going to make Adobe happy. HTML5 video on the web is on a substantial rise, going from just 10% of web videos in January or this year to 54% of total web videos this October. Just five months ago in May, HTML5 usage was at 26%. MeFeedia found that while Flash is still the dominant player of choice on desktop PCs, mobile devices like the iPad, iPhone, and Android phones are what are driving HTML5 adoption.

Palm Pre 2 for Rogers in the wild
Curious where Palm model number P102UNA -- the North American UMTS variant of the Pre 2 -- might be headed? Since Bell and Telus rolled out their HSPA networks, Canada's become far more averse to CDMA than the US has, so it makes sense that they'd be getting Palm's latest handset in a GSM flavor, not a CDMA one (à la Verizon). Google: buying Android was "best deal ever"
Google's decision to buy Android in 2005 was its "best deal ever," corporate development VP David Lawee remarked at the Stanford Accel Symposium today. The executive admitted that he didn't see the launch panning out but pointed to Android's success as a platform as proof. It now accounts for much of the $1 billion in mobile ad revenue at Google and at least temporarily passed iPhone share despite shipping later.

Extra! Extra! app may be scraping news museum's feed of front pages
TUAW came across the US$3.99 app Extra! Extra! when developer Finbarr Brady solicited a review. Extra! Extra! bills itself as an app that will supply you with the daily front pages of more than 800 newspapers from around the globe.
This sounded suspiciously similar to one of the features on the Newseum's website. The Newseum, located in Washington, D.C., is a museum that documents news media history. Each morning, more than 800 newspapers from around the world send their front pages as high-quality PDFs to the museum's gallery, which features these pages for educational purposes.

'Steeper' project aims to boost electronics' power efficiency by 10x, eliminate vampire power
A research project with the lofty goal of reducing electronics' power consumption by ten times and virtually eliminating so-called vampire power may not ordinarily stand the best chance of being taken seriously, but this new initiative dubbed "Steeper" isn't exactly your ordinary research project. Led by IBM and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (or EPFL), the EU-funded project will use nanotechnology in an attempt to reduce power consumption at the level of transistors and nanowires, with the ultimate goal being to reduce the operating voltage to less than 0.5 volts, thereby reducing overall power consumption by one order of magnitude.

Kobo Wi-Fi eReader, iOS app periodical subscriptions go live
Kobo today formally launched magazine and newspaper subscriptions across its platforms. Both the Wireless eReader as well as the iPad and iPhone apps can subscribe to and download periodicals with much of the formatting intact. Apple holding "secret summit" with select iOS devs next week
Business Insider is reporting that Apple is set to hold a secret iOS developer summit next week. The event apparently begins next Tuesday and will run for three days. While Business Insider doesn't have any firm details yet, they speculate that the purpose of the summit is to improve the quality of apps on iOS devices in order to stave off competition from Google's Android App Store.
The event coincides with the stated sometime-in-November release date of iOS 4.2, which will be available for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. iOS 4.2 will be the first major update to the iPad since its launch in March. It's unknown what develo

Spotify denies talks with Apple
Despite rumors to the contrary, UK-based Spotify denies being in talks with Apple over a possible acquisition. In an interview with CNET, Spotify representative Jim Butcher said that is company has "absolutely no intention" of selling to Apple or anyone for that matter.

HP contracts 5 or 6 new Palm devices for 2011?
Underwhelmed by the feeling of sameness with the Pre 2? Well, you may or may not be in luck; Chinese-based CENS.com is reporting that manufacturers Foxconn and Compal now have contracts to manufacturer up to six new Palm devices for 2011. That boils down to one for Compal, and either four or five for Foxconn. We'd venture a guess that PalmPad's at least one of those, seeing as it's due early next year, but what about the others? Rumor: Camera woes holding up white iPhone, may be perma-postponed
The mysterious and semi-mythical white iPhone 4 just can't catch a break. First Apple acknowledges the phone won't see stores before this Spring; now Cult of Mac is reporting that the reason may not be a manufacturing issue at all. Instead, the phone's white case and the rear-facing camera may be interacting in a downright uncooperative way.
The CoM source suggests that the white iPhone case leaks light into the camera sensor, resulting in washed-out photos regardless of the subject lighting. The problem was supposedly identified very late in the game at Apple's testing center that qualifies cases for use with the phone.

FTC drops Google Street View loo after privacy changes
The Federal Trade Commission today dropped its investigation into Google Street View's unintentional Wi-Fi snooping. Officials at the US agency said that Google's tougher internal privacy rules combined with a promise from Google were enough to drop complaints. The search firm had persuaded the FTC that it hadn't and wouldn't use any of the sensitive data it had scraped while driving Street View cars, according to a statement.

Echoing sentiments of Sprint's senior VP of networks from last month, CEO Dan Hesse has said that the company will be saying goodnight to its aging push-to-talk network -- iDEN -- that it inherited from its Nextel acquisition several years ago, "just like 1G was shut down." Security alert: New Trojan Horse apps said to attack the Mac
Some security mavens have long theorized that as the Mac becomes more popular, we'd start to see malware that would start targeting the platform. Sure enough, this morning's crop of email blasts from PR firms included a few notices of trojans that are affecting Mac users.
First, from SecureMac, comes word of trojan.osx.boonana.a, which comes disguised as a link on social networking sites asking "Is this you in this video?" Clicking the link downloads and runs a Java applet that then installs further applications to modify system files and open the system to password-free access. The other malicious apps report back to command and control servers, as well as hijack user accounts to spread the trojan through email spam.

UI Centric cancels Macallan UI project for Windows 7 tablet
Waiting for a Windows 7 tablet PC with the page-turning Macallan UI on board? Don't hold your breath, because UI Centric tells us the project has been canceled and isn't talking details. Though a July press release claimed the touchscreen interface was slated for an undisclosed tablet in Q3 of this year, that document has since been pulled, so it's probably safe to say that deal fell through. Still, the company informs us that there's a new announcement on the way, and we hate to dismiss vaporware out of hand -- if you've got a spare diving-class oxygen tank or three, perhaps you can afford to breathe in.

Chinese company accuses Apple of violating iPad trademark
A company based in Shenzhen, China is accusing Apple of copyright infringement, writes Agence France-Presse. Proview Technology is reported to have registered an "iPad" trademark as far back as January 2000; more importantly, the firm is believed to still hold rights to the product name inside of China. Apple only launched its own iPad in the country on September 17th, several months after an American introduction.

White iPhone 4 cancelled, blamed on camera?
The decision to delay the white iPhone 4 to spring 2011 may be a sign of a more permanent decision to drop it, a rumor contended on Wednesday. The company allegedly now has no plans to ship the different color at all with the current generation and is instead holding off until the next-generation iPhone. Bundesverwaltungsgericht bestätigt GEZ-Gebühren für PCs
Wer er nicht schon ein anderes Gerät angemeldet hat, muss für PCs und internetfähige Handys Rundfunkgebühr zahlen, auch wenn er keine Onlineangebote von öffentlich-rechtlicher Sender nutzt. The 64GB, 11.6-inch MacBook Air must be selling extremely well, as Apple has boosted shipping times from 24 hours to 1 to 3 days. Typically the least expensive version of Apple hardware has been the best seller (or among the top), so it's not surprising to see the Air selling well.

Robotic hands are usually just that -- hands -- but some researchers from the University of Chicago and Cornell University (with a little help from iRobot) have taken a decidedly different approach for their so-called universal robotic gripper. TextExpander 3.2 offers backup, restore
TextExpander, which allows you to create text shortcuts and macros, has been updated to version 3.2. Along with some bug fixes, it also adds the ability to easily backup and restore your shortcuts, including automatic backup and keyboard shortcuts to expand top search results.
The backup/restore feature is a nice addition. You can tell TextExpander to backup hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly and keep 50, 100, 200 or an infinite number of backups (well, limited to available disk space). These backups are uncompressed, which probably isn't a big deal for most people (mine was about 2mb) but given that Apple has just released a new MacBook Air with a 64GB hard drive, we should remember that space is still a factor. Im aktuellen iOS Betriebssystem 4.1 ist nun eine sehr kritische Sicherheitslücke gefunden worden:Es ist möglich, Anrufe von einem nicht gejailbreakten iPhone aus zu tätigen, selbst wenn das iPhone eine Code-Sperre besitzt und gesperrt ist. Der Fehler lässt sich ganz einfach zu reproduzieren:
1.) iPhone anschalten, sodass man auf den Lock-Bildschirm mit dem Entriegeln-Slider kommt

Frozenbyte kündigte heute in einer Pressemitteilung an, dass ihr mehrfach ausgezeichnetes Plattformspiel Trine schon im November über Steam als Steamplay-Titel auch für Mac angeboten werden wird.

LimeWire late Tuesday said that it had secretly installed a 'cut-off' switch in its peer-to-peer client to accompany the court-mandated withdrawal of its app. After a rumor from PCMag, company representative Tiffany Guarnaccia acknowledged to CNET that a summer update had given LimeWire the ability to isolate clients from the Gnutella network, rendering the app useless. Eine Studie von MeFeedia wollte ermitteln, wie hoch der Anteil von H.264-Videoinhalten im HTML5-Formats ist. Im Januar, also zur Vorstellung des iPads, lag der Wert bei gerade einmal zehn Prozent. Apple North Carolina holdings include extra 70 acres
Apple owns an extra 70 acres across the street from its new data center finishing construction in Maiden, North Carolina, according to data from Catawba County's Geospatial Information Services. The main facility, measuring some 500,000 square feet, sits on a 183-acre plot. People in Maiden are reportedly speculating that the 70-acre area will simply be used for office space, but the land may also back claims that Apple is planning to grow the data center's size, perhaps even beyond a rumored doubled amount.

Apple drops from 5th to 9th in new Greenpeace rankings
After taking a lot of public criticism from Greenpeace early in the last decade, Apple has redesigned its hardware and climbed up in the environmental rankings in recent years. Last year, Apple made it all the way up to number five on Greenpeace's Greener Electronics list. Unfortunately, as in so many other aspects of a highly competitive industry, standing still is akin to moving backwards.

Apple's online store today has three refurbished Mac models starting at $849. The 1.86GHz MacBook Air with 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive was $999, but has seen a $150 price break. Nintendo: Apple 'absolutely' more a threat than Microsoft
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime made a rare admission for the company and said in a recent interview that Apple was a bigger threat to its share of gaming than Microsoft. Despite the Xbox 360's recent lead, he explained that the iPhone and iPod were "absolutely" larger threats in the near future. Apple had a similar effect to Farmville or other entertainment in that it consumed free time that wouldn't be devoted to a Nintendo system, the executive told Forbes.

JKoala aims to complete Open Java Development Kit for Macs
An open-source Java/Swing developer and author has opened JKoala, a donation-funded project which intends to port the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT)/Swing under Mac OS X/Cocoa and help complete OpenJDK in a timeframe that allows it to be used with Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion," which is not likely have its own Java runtime or native development kit. JooJoo team switching to Android for 2011 tablet
Fusion Garage tonight revealed that a sequel to the JooJoo tablet was in development but would make a major switch in platforms. The new model would use Android and would be customized for the larger format much like Samsung's Social Hub or Windows Phone 7's People Hub, merging messaging like Gmail with Facebook and other social networking. Gizmodo was told that talks are underway with Google to receive official support and access to Android Market, but the design may force Fusion Garage to go without the store.

WD TV Live Hub official, packs 1TB of media
Western Digital has quickly followed up on recent leaks by launching the WD TV Live Hub. Unlike the company's earlier media streamers, it's designed to be fully self-contained and has a full 1TB of space that can hold large amounts of 1080p video and is enough to become a media server for the home. Garmin partly splits from ASUS, hints iPhone GPS app coming
ASUS and Garmin today formally declared the end of their phone partnership but left room for collaboration and for expansion of Garmin's smartphone efforts to the iPhone and other platforms. Under the new deal, ASUS will make phones by itself in the future but will use Garmin GPS apps on its Android phones for "a couple of years," according to ASUS' mobile lead Benson Lin. Garmin will continue to sell and support devices like the Garminfone and nuvifone G60, but it won't launch new models.

Several Apple execs seize on record stock prices
Several Apple executives have taken advantage of record stock prices through large share selloffs, according to SEC documents. The greatest amount of cash was brought in by the company's senior VP of hardware engineering, Bob Mansfield, who sold 40,000 shares on October 21st with a strike price of $36.54 for $308 per share, granting him $10.844 million. The executive is already relatively wealthy without bonuses or stock options, earning a salary of $600,396 a year.

MacBook Air trumps Sony VAIO Z in SSD booting showdown
A new showdown (video below) between the 11-inch MacBook Air and the Sony VAIO Z has landed an unusual victory for Apple. Despite the Z having dual SSDs in a RAID stripe and theoretically outperforming the single SSD of its rival, it took almost three times longer to start in the Laptop test, launching from a cold boot in about 40 seconds where the Mac took just 15 for the same task. Wake from hibernation was also about twice as slow on the Sony system at five to six seconds where the Mac can take just two to three.

Sonos ships Wireless Dock for iPhone, iPod in the US, Canada
Sonos' Wireless Dock for the iPod and iPhone is now shipping in both Canada and the US. Introduced in September, the accessory for Sonos' own Multi-Room Music System or ZonePlayer system access to music stored on the portable Apple devices. Jobs: No TCP/IP option coming to AirPrint in near future
Support for TCP/IP is not coming to iOS 4.2's AirPrint feature, at least not in time for launch, an e-mail from Apple CEO Steve Jobs indicates. After a long run-up and a last minute design adjustment, Square has begun taking payments. The combination of apps for the iPad and iPhone (free, App Store) or Android gives stores and individuals a way of taking credit card payments on the spot without to use a relatively expensive credit card processing machine or service. Greenpeace ranks drop Apple to 9th as HP, Samsung advance
Greenpeace in its latest Greener Electronics guide saw major shifts that most affected Apple. The company fell from fifth place to ninth simply by failing to advance its score beyond the earlier 4.9 score. While Apple still earned a high score for eliminating BFRs and PVC plastic from its hardware, it was criticized for a lack of information on its policies. Bare Bones today launched BBEdit 9.6, upgrading the text and HTML editor with HTML5 support. LimeWire to pull its P2P client after failed court battle
LimeWire today agreed to stop offering its peer-to-peer file sharing client after an unsuccessful attempt to fight a lawsuit win by RIAA labels from last spring. The company said the move was "not our ideal path" but said it would both remove the option to download the client and improve the filtering where it can. NPD: holiday tech sales "increasingly dark"
The NPD today warned that technology sales during the holidays could be especially bleak. Industry Analysis VP Stephen Baker said estimates were looking "increasingly dark" and blamed it mostly on the culture behind the companies themselves. The color had already been pushed back to an end of year window and now isn't likely to appear until the fifth-generation iPhone is in stores. PlayStation phone confirmed in leak: 1GHz, touchpad
Sony Ericsson's rumored PlayStation phone was confirmed in major fashion today through a leak of prototype shots and according details. True to expectations, it will be a full touchscreen slider but with PSP Go-style PlayStation controls instead of a QWERTY keyboard; it would go so far as to have shoulder buttons. AOC has unveiled a new ultra-slim range of LCD displays all measuring only half an inch thick. There are six models in the Razor lineup with display sizes ranging from 18-5-inches to 23-inches. Japan's PhotoFast had the distinction of becoming the first company to offer a storage upgrade for the new MacBook Air. The GM2 SFV1 Air not only gives an SSD in the narrow card format needed for the Air but goes beyond what Apple itself is delivering. Sprint adds 644K users, loses $911m after Android upgrades
Sprint had mixed results today for the summer that gave it a heavy cost for the popularity of Android. It had its second straight quarter of adding users after years of losses, adding a total of 644,000 users, more than half of which (354,000) were subscribers moving to devices like the HTC Evo 4G and Samsung Epic 4G. Es klingt so selbstverständlich, dass die Meldung etwas absurd wirkt, aber angesichts des durch und durch merkwürdigen Handy-Marktes ist es tatsächlich eine Novität: Apple verkauft sein iPhone (3GS und 4) jetzt auch im eigenen Shop. Für das 4rer-Modell mit 16 GByte werden 629 Euro fällig, für das mit 32 GByte 739 Euro, derzeit gibt es die Handys nur in schwarz, die weiße Version ist dann immer noch "derzeit nicht erhältlich". Und natürlich (!) kommen die Teile ohne Vertrag, SIM-Karte oder sonstige Festlegungen.

TUAW's Daily App: Alice in Wonderland
I played Disney's Alice in Wonderland way back in February of this year, and back then, I wasn't super impressed. It was a little too much before the movie, and for US$4.99, it was a little too common for a platformer. But the app has just gone on sale for Halloween, and for $0.99, it's worth another look.

Elecom's rotating USB memory card reader tries not to block your ports
It's still not a substitute for a built-in memory card reader in a laptop, but Elecom's new MR-C25 Series USB memory card reader might just be the next best thing. In addition to reading both SD and microSD cards, it's able to rotate a full 180 degrees to give you access to ports on either side of the card reader. From the looks of things, you may still run into some problems with ports that are particularly close together (and with bulky plugs or devices), but it should definitely prevent at least some unwanted USB swapping. Weisses iPhone 4 erscheint erst im Frühjahr 2011
Das weisse iPhone 4 verzögert sich weiter. Ursprünglich wollte Apple das iPhone 4 ab Juli 2010 als Ergänzung zum schwarzen Modell auch in einer weissen Ausführung anbieten. Später wurde das weisse iPhone dann auf Ende 2010 verschoben. Nun berichtet Reuters, dass mit dem Erscheinen des weissen iPhones nicht vor Frühjahr 2011 zu rechnen sei. Eine offizielle Begründung von Apple liegt nicht vor, Apple berichtete lediglich, dass die Produktion weisser iPhones schwieriger sei als erwartet. Gerüchten zufolge kämpft Apple mit Verfärbungen des weissen Kunststoffes, als weitere mögliche Ursache wird ein Durchscheinen der Displaybeleuchtung durch das weisse Gehäuse genannt.

Hands-On: Nook Color (mit Video)
Zwar durften unsere US-Kollegen das gute Stück nicht selbst anfassen, dafür gab es aber eine ausgiebige Tour des Nook Color mit einem Barnes & Noble-Mitarbeiter. Vorläufiges Ergebnis: der Nook Color scheint stabil gebaut, bietet gute Blickwinkelunabhängigkeit und einen scharfen Bildschirm, allerdings scheint die Software noch nicht ganz fertig zu sein, denn das Umblättern von Seiten geht noch etwas zäh vonstatten, auch wenn der Touchscreen ansonsten gut und schnell auf Fingereingaben reagiert. Erste Eindrücke vom neuen MacBook Air
macprime hatte gestern die Gelegenheit, das vor einer Woche auf dem «Back to the Mac»-Event vorgestellte neue MacBook Air ein erstes Mal in Augenschein zu nehmen.
Das 13-Zoll-Modell erinnert äusserlich stark an das bisherige MacBook Air. Die erste Neuerung, die man bemerkt, ist das grosse Glas-Trackpad, welches man schon von anderen Apple-Notebooks her kennt. Ausserdem besitzt das MacBook Air nun zwei USB-Anschlüsse (einer auf jeder Seite) und einen SD-Kartenslot (aus Platzgründen fehlt dieser beim 11-Zoll-Modell). Gestrichen wurde hingegen der Infrarotempfänger für die Apple Remote. Das Display des 13-Zöllers besitzt nun die gleiche Auflösung wie ein 15-Zoll-MacBook-Pro und selbst das 11-Zoll-Display des kleineren Modells übertrifft auflösungsmässig das Display eines normalen MacBooks. Dank der hohen Displayauflösung, dem grossen Trackpad und der Tastatur in Normalgrösse (die übrigens keine Hintergrundbeleuchtung besitzt) lässt es sich auch mit dem kleinen MacBook Air gut arbeiten. Für den Mac-Browser Camino steht ein Update bereit. Version 2.0.5 ist in erster Linie ein Stabilitäts- und Sicherheitsupdate und wird seitens des Herstellers allen Nutzern sehr empfohlen. Adobe entwickelt Flash-Anzeigenformat mit iPhone-Anpassung

Gestern dachten wir noch, dass sich der gläserne Sargdeckel über dem weißen iPhone 4 bald öffnet, aber Schneewittchen mag einfach nicht aufwachen: Apple hat sich dafür entschuldigt, dass sich die Auslieferung ein weiteres Mal verschiebt - diesmal bis in den Frühling 2011. Das giftige Apfelstückchen will offensichtlich nicht raus, aber was genau das Problem nun verursacht, verrät uns Apple natürlich nach wie vor nicht.

Dritter Hotfix für AMD Catalyst 10.10

Release Candidate von Windows 7 SP1 steht zum Download bereit
Microsoft hat im Vorfeld der am Donnerstag beginnenden Professional Developers Conference den Release Candidate des Service Pack 1 für Windows 7 und Windows Server 2008 R2 veröffentlicht. Eine Sondereinheit der niederländischen Polizei hat die Kommandoserver des Botnetzes Bredolab vom Netz getrennt. Bredolab soll mehr als 30 Millionen Computern weltweit infiziert haben. It's been percolating for ages, maturing like a fine wine and fermenting like a premium cheese: the latest edition of Microsoft Office for the Mac, Office 2011 (or Office 14, if you're counting version numbers) has finally made it to market. Enterprise and education customers have had access to the new version for a few weeks now, but as of late last night those users who had registered for free upgrades from Office 2008 (for purchases after August 1) were able to start downloading the software. Apple introduces online Chinese store, App Store now in Simplified Chinese
Apple launched a Chinese-language version of its online store today with all of Apple's product lineup in place, including the online-only (PRODUCT) RED iPod nano, and a selection of third-party products.
In addition to this, a Simplified Chinese version of the App Store was rolled out with localized apps and the most popular paid and free apps in China.
The top paid iPhone app in the Chinese app store is Cartoon Wars 2: Heroes. You'll find your Angry Birds fix all the way down at #7.

White iPhone 4 delayed until Spring 2011
If you've been holding off on buying an iPhone 4 because you were waiting for the white version, you may as well give up and go black. Reuters reports that the white iPhone 4 has been delayed until spring of next year. If you've been paying attention at all over the past few years, you'll know that's only a few months before the iPhone 5 will likely come out, so waiting for a white iPhone 4 really doesn't make any sense now.

Let's just be honest, Apple: white stuff is impossible to manufacture. In fact, scientists have yet to prove that white even exists, so we're not sure why you're bothering to try to make a phone out of it! That's right: after a missed availability date in July and another delay after that, Cupertino has once again pushed back the manufacture of the palest iPhone 4 -- this time clear into spring of 2011. CleanMyMac by Macpaw software is an amazing bit of Mac utility software that has one purpose in life: to streamline your hard drive by getting rid of all the extraneous stuff that you probably don't know is there and almost certainly don't need. iOS devices top survey of UK children's most-wanted gifts
The hottest toy in the UK this year isn't a stuffed animal or a dress-up doll -- it's an Apple device. The top three spots on a list of most-wanted gifts in the UK were taken by Apple's iOS devices, with 39% of kids and parents polled saying that iPhones, iPods, and iPads were wanted under the tree this year. Not that they need it -- the same survey found that kids today also had 39 different toys and games to play with -- more than twice as many as their parents had when they were younger.

Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 sees public beta release
We knew good and well it was coming, and here it is. Microsoft has today introduced the Release Candidate (RC) of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to the public, and for those unaware of how these software rollouts "work," the RC release generally signals that a final build is just about ready. App Store locked down for Thanksgiving, Christmas holidays
Apple is apparently going to give the App Store approval staff some time off over the holidays. But don't worry, you'll still be able to shop. It's just that developers who are rushing to get holiday-themed apps into the App Store will need to make sure that they get their content approved before the holidays arrive.

T-Mobile launching data tethering / wireless hotspot plan on Nov. 3rd for $14.99?
T-Mobile said it was "working to deliver" hotspot support to T-Mobile G2 users, and now we might know the reason for the delay -- an allegedly leaked document details Magenta's scheme to offer a comprehensive data tethering plan for a $14.99 monthly fee.
