Briefly: HyperMac Air support, Starbucks Card Mobile in NYC
HyperMac today said that its soon-to-be-extinct external MacBook batteries are compatible with the latest Air models. 60Wh, 100Wh, 150Wh and 222Wh capacities are available, theoretically offering up to six times the capacity of 11-inch Air's built-in battery. The 222Wh battery is said to extend the 11-inch Air's life by roughly 32 hours, whereas the 13-inch computer gains 38 hours. The gear will remain available until November 2nd for $200 (60Wh), $300 (100Wh), $400 (150Wh) and $500 (222Wh). A $150 car charger is also an option.

Adobe confirms Flash Player 10.1 is coming to BlackBerry, Windows Phone 7 and more
We've already known that Adobe would be bringing Flash Player 10.1 to Windows Phone 7, but the company has just now made that fully official at its currently-happening MAX conference (alongside its Air 2.5 announcement), and it's also confirmed exactly which other mobile platforms the plug-in will be headed to. Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0 showcased in new commercial
It's hard to tell if the ad embedded after the break is purely official, but it definitely reeks of HP. In a good way, that is. Uploaded by the same fellow that gave us our first sneak peek at webOS 2.0, this "Sizzle" ad shows 34 solid seconds of Palm Pre 2 action, complete with a glimpse at Angry Birds, Facebook and all sorts of new 2.0 features. iOS 4.1 bug allows calls from locked iPhone 4s
A vulnerability in iOS 4.1 is allowing people to make calls on a nominally locked iPhone 4, users note. Passcode-protected iPhones typically block most actions unless a person picks Emergency Call and dials a genuine emergency number, such as 911. Circumventing this on the iPhone 4 can be done by entering a non-emergency number from the Emergency screen, tapping Call, then immediately hitting the lock button. The action brings up the Phone app, where people can then access a contact list or manually dial any number.

Borders cuts Kobo, Velocity tablet prices to fix low sales
Borders said it would start up multiple deals, beginning October 31, in what's already considered a bid to recover sagging sales. The company dropped the price of its core readers, the Kobo eReader and the Aluratek Libre, down to $100; the Libre deal lasts until November 15. It should also be giving away five free books with each Kobo Wireless eReader at its usual $140 price, and Sony Readers will get a free cover and light combo.

A complete movie guide on your iPhone
In my last post I wrote about Movie Vault, so I'm going to loosely stay with the subject, and suggest you take a look at the recently updated Leonard Maltin Movie Guide. We took at the original version many months ago and I think the app is better now.
For US $2.99 you get the complete set of Maltin reviews and since the app is internet connected you get new reviews as they appear.

Unisys to help Apple expand corporate and government sales
Apple has reportedly begun collaborating with Unisys in an attempt to expand its reach into enterprise and government sectors. The contract, which was signed earlier this month, is said to focus on maintenance and other services that Unisys can provide to Apple's range of business customers and various government agencies.

Microsoft says it's 'doubling down' on PC games
Well, it looks like the forthcoming launch of Microsoft's browser-based Games for Windows Marketplace could just be the beginning of a broader PC gaming push from the company. Speaking with Kotaku, Microsoft's Peter Orullian, group product manager for Windows PC and Mobile, said rather boldly that PC games "is a place where we are doubling down." Buffalo, Pioneer intro first BDXL disc writers
Both Buffalo and Pioneer have introduced BDXL disc writers for the Japanese market. Buffalo will offer both a USB 2.0-powered external drive, the BRXL-6U2, and an internal BRXL-6FBS-BK model with a SATA interface, while Pioneer's BDR-206MBK is for internal use only. BDXL media can hold as much as 128GB with a four-layer disc, or 100GB on a three-layer disc.

Model suing Apple over pics in iPhone app
A 19 year-old Long Island yoga instructor and model is suing Apple and developer Samba Studios over racy photos of her that are featured in an iPhone app called eXtreme Cam Girls. The app, which has apparently been removed from the App Store, features self-portraits of Rebecca Battino in a scanty swimsuit that she took when she was 16 years old. She's not quite sure how the photos ended up in the app when they were being stored in the iPhoto library on her Mac.

Daiwa House enlists Moggle for remote control crawlspace inspections
Apparently Japanese homebuilder Daiwa House offers crawl space inspections as part of its warranty service, and to that end have enlisted Moogle (rhymes with "goggle," not "Google"). The robot weighs just under 30 lbs, measures roughly 20 x 12 x 9.5 inches, and rocks a laser rangefinder, WiFi connectivity, and two cameras: one for driving, one for inspecting. Symbian Foundation shutting down?
A potentially impactful rumor today has suggested the Symbian Foundation may close down. A tipster reportedly close to Symbian mentioned that its executive director's abrupt departure and its instituting its CFO Tim Holbrow as a replacement was really a pretext to wind down the company's operations. The Register source blamed a lack of funding and mentioned that staff were being given severance packages.

Adobe posts Lightroom 3.3, Camera Raw 6.3 candidates
Adobe has posted early release candidates two planned software updates, Lightroom 3.3 and Camera Raw 6.3. The patches mainly add RAW support for recent cameras, such as Canon's PowerShot G12 and PowerShot S95, and Nikon's D3100, D7000 and Coolpix P7000. Also newly compatible are the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2, and Samsung's NX100 and TL350/WB2000.

Apple joins Facebook, Google, others to combat Paul Allen's charges
Back in August, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen formally sued 11 tech companies, including Apple, over the use of technologies for which he holds the patents. Now, Apple has joined Google, Facebook, Yahoo! and others in opposition the suit.
Google initially filed a motion to dismiss the claims on October 18th, stating that Allen's company, Interval Research (which ceased operation in 2000), had failed to explain exactly how Google had supposedly violated its patents. Additionally, Google claims that Interval is lumping all 11 defendants together without demonstrating any "coordinated action."

No custom ringtones for Windows Phone 7? (video)
We just sat through an eight minute long video of someone at Pocketnow sampling every ringtone on his HTC Surround. Why did we do this? We honestly didn't believe that someone dedicate seven (plus) minutes of a YouTube video to ringtone samples! Suffice it to say, we never want to hear a ringtone again. Perhaps more importantly, our man points out that Microsoft seems to have left the ability to add your own custom ringtones out of Windows Phone 7 altogether. Data center expansion planned all along?
The rumored expansion of Apple's North Carolina data center may have been planned the entire time, photos from a Catawba County Flickr feed suggest. Dating back to July 2009, an architectural rendering related to the data center shows not one but two buildings. The positioning of the second building is consistent with a construction site spotted in a recent aerial recon flight.

Sex Offender Tracker for iPhone keeps you in the know
The Sex Offender Tracker App (US$1.99), for the iPhone isn't the first such app in the App Store (Offender Locator and Sex Offender Search are two others), but it is the first to use augmented reality. As an added bonus, it has Antoine Dodson's approval.
The app uses your GPS location and a national database to identify registered sex offenders in your area. The information is presented as an overlay on top of video of your location. Users can specify search criteria and opt for a list view if the augmented presentation is less than ideal.

Jolicloud prepping a netbook of its own
What do you do if you're the maker of a popular netbook operating system? Create your own netbook, of course! Okay, it does seem like a rather odd step, but Jolicloud CEO Tariq Krim tweeted a few teaser images this morning and then confirmed with the exclusive shot above that the software company is in fact working with a hardware partner to create its own 10.1-inch netbook. The details are fairly slim at the moment, but Krim did share that the mini-laptop will boot Jolicloud 1.1 and be primarily aimed at those in the 12 to 25 age range. As for specs, your guess is as good as ours at this point, although he boasted that it will be able to rock 720p video.

BlackBerry PlayBook demoed in the flesh at Adobe MAX, Air-based SDK launched

Pixelmator setting up shop in the Mac App Store
Pixelmator is a favorite Mac application around TUAW. The US$59 image editor is used by many of our bloggers to fix or manipulate the pictures you see here on the site.
We were thrilled to see that the Pixelmator team announced on their blog that they'll be selling their application in the upcoming Mac App Store. Hollywood's love affair with the iPad
The New York Times reports that the iPad is catching on in Hollywood, attracting actors, writers, producers and other personalities looking to alter their workflow or even get in a few rounds of Angry Birds between takes.
The Times begins by describing a meeting between director JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof and producer Bob Orci (among others) about the upcoming Star Trek movie. As the group talked, Orci used is his iPad to flip through potential location photos, stills from the first movie and a picture of an actress under consideration. He told the Times, "When you're carrying a little TV around, you bring the power of imagery to places that you don't normally have it."

RIM posts BlackBerry PlayBook SDK, simulator for Mac and PC
RIM today posted the first SDK and emulators for its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The kits let both Macs and Windows PCs write apps in BlackBerry Tablet OS' preferred Adobe AIR format and gives a disk image that can run in VMware and possibly other virtual machines. The release gives developers an early opportunity to design ahead of BlackBerry App World submissions and the PlayBook's early 2011 launch.

iPhoto '11 upgrades deleting photo collections
Some people are losing part or all of their photo libraries when upgrading from iPhoto '09 to iPhoto '11, a part of the new iLife '11 suite, according to complaints. Still other people are reporting issues such as repeated requests to upgrade a library, glitches in Events and Faces, and trouble importing from connected devices like iPhones and DSLRs. Unofficial solutions include repairing permissions in Disk Utility, or going through a more complex procedure involving deleting the iPhoto PLIST file and forcing the software to rebuild a library.

VLC 1.1.0 now available for all iOS devices
VLC, the free versatile video player beloved across the world and multiple operating systems, has been updated and is now available for the iPod touch and iPhone. The iPad app was released about a month ago but it is now a universal binary which runs on the iPhone 4, 3GS and "recent iPod touches."
Videos can be added to your iOS device through iTunes. While VLC won't play every video format, it plays a lot of them without requiring specific encoding for the iOS device you are on.
The update also makes it possible to delete files within the application, meaning that you no longer have to use iTunes. The release notes also say that the decoding will be faster and more extensions are recognized.

Report: Apple's inventory woes fixed for holiday shoppers
A number of analysts are expecting inventory shortages to restrict holiday gadget sales. However, Forbes reports that Apple will be able to avoid the pinch.
Jason Busch, the founder and Managing Director of advisory firm Azul Partner, expects Apple to keep holiday shoppers happy for three main reasons.

Kindle books outselling print 2 to 1 for Amazon's top 10 bestsellers, and other relatively positive sales figures

Google officially passes 100,000 Android apps
Google quietly confirmed this morning that it had officially passed 100,000 active apps in Android Market. The tally has been reached just over two years after Android itself launched and half a year after the 50,000 mark. Rumor: Verizon Wireless on a pre-iPhone hiring spree
As 2010 comes to a close, Verizon Wireless is rumored to be on a hiring spree prior to carrying the iPhone. CNET reports that the company is hiring "hundreds" of call center personnel, who will be trained to handle support calls for "personal computers and portable devices like MP3 players and smartphones."
Of course, Apple, the iPhone and Verizon are never mentioned in this story, and any connection is based upon supposition. Customer service call center staffing companies Teleperformance and Ryla are said to be recruiting on behalf of a "major wireless cell phone service retailer." Both companies have prior experience supporting Verizon and Teleperformance has worked with Apple.

HTC 7 Pro squares away its FCC approval?
So, here's what we know: a Windows Phone from HTC just earned its FCC wings, it's production (meaning non-prototype) hardware and it's a CDMA device. That alone is notable considering that Microsoft has said that CDMA won't be available until the first half of next year, and here we are in October with an FCC-approved, production-ready device waiting in the wings already. We're not the type to be floating conspiracy theories, but could it be that we're dealing with an artificial delay here, or is the CDMA software stack really that far away from being solid? Apple Stores could start using new location-based app technology as soon as next week, a report claims. Some form of app would allegedly track a person's proximity to an Apple Store, verify their registration for an appointment and check them in. Amazon: Kindle books outselling all paper books combined
Amazon today marked two major milestones in the history of the Kindle for both the hardware and its books. The company said its e-book sales in the past month were larger than for all paper books combined, climbing as high as two to one. Ortustech launches 4.8-inch 1080p display
When Apple introduced the fourth generation iPhone last June, Steve Jobs made a lot of hay about the 326 pixel-per-inch density of its 960 x 640 Retina display. To date, that's the highest pixel density found on any portable device, but it may not be for long.

Gericht spricht Sky zwei Millionen Euro Schadenersatz zu

SK Telecom plans own phone platform to fight Android, iPhone
SK Telecom today signaled its plans to get into the mobile platform business. Company chief Jung Man-Won directly billed it as a strategy to "eventually compete against Google, Apple and Nokia" and set aside one trillion Won (about $897 million) over three years to develop the project. Aside from a platform to support third-party apps, it would expand existing services like T Map and T Store into services others could build on. Iconfactory has given a sneak peak at their upcoming Twitterrific version 4 for the Mac. There's no information yet on pricing or release date, but they do say it will require Snow Leopard "because of some new features."

Tokyo Station bekommt 330 Zoll Display von Sharp

Am kommenden Freitag wird in der Tokyo Station ein neuer Riesenscreen installiert. Von Sharp kommt das Display mit 330 Zoll Diagonale, was knapp 8,40m sind. Es besteht aus 18 einzelnen Screens mit je 60 Zoll. Darauf sollen neben Spots der Firma auch andere Informationen und News gespielt werden. Ein bisschen neidisch wird man da ja schon. Wi-Fi Direct to allow Bluetooth-like pairing, media sharing

RIM announces PlayBook simulator and SDK for BlackBerry Tablet OS
We know you're all partyin' up a storm at the Adobe MAX conference, but just in case one of you missed it, RIM's announced the availability of the Adobe AIR SDK for BlackBerry Tablet OS -- not to mention a little something called the BlackBerry PlayBook Simulator. North Carolina data center on the verge of launching?
Apple's data center in Maiden, North Carolina should begin operating "any day now," local officials are quoted as saying. Although no specific start date has been revealed, production is believed to be ramping up. A local realtor, Bill Wagenseller, has moreover done a second aerial recon of the facility (see below), showing evidence of construction that may back rumors of further expansion.

Adobe AIR 2.5 converts apps for iPhone, tablets, TVs
Adobe today stepped up development of its non-computer Flash plans by launching AIR 2.5. The app for creating non-browser Flash apps can now package them for Android and iPhone devices but also tablets, including the iPad and the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. Apple's built-in QuickTime video player is fine if all you ever want to watch are files in the limited number of formats that it supports. However, if you need to playback files that are encoded in Xvid, DivX, WebM, or even the dreaded FLV, you'll need something with a bit more capability. VLC is one choice that works great for playback of all of these various formats, but the Miro player has just been bumped to version 3.5, and it offers a number of capabilities that VLC can't match.
In addition to being a multi-format video player, Miro is also a BitTorrent client that can subscribe to video feeds, automatically download new episodes, and add them to your library. Miro lets you organize your video content, create playlists, and automatically delete shows that have been watched.

There's a lot we already know about Logitech's Revue with Google TV, and after our walkthrough on Saturday's Engadget Show, we also know just how NSFW the search results can be. All jesting aside, we did notice some amount of stuttering during our testing, and now we know why: for all intents and purposes, it's a netbook. TUAW's Daily App: Tiptop
Tiptop is a game that came out back in April of this year. It's a take on the Lemmings genre (which asks you to guide little characters through a map to an exit), and it uses line drawing to create paths for the characters, leading them around obstacles or across gaps. The style of the game is nuts, with lots of silly abstract flourishes and jokes, and the action can get frantic at times.

In Indien wird momentan das Indian Neutrino Observatory, kurz INO, bei Tamil Nadu gebaut. Es handelt sich um ein 250 Millionen Dollar teures Untergrund-Labor. Chilenische Minenopfer bekamen ein Samsung Galaxy Beam unter Tage
Die chilenischen Minenarbeiter, die kürzlich gerettet wurden, haben während ihrer Zeit unter Tage diverse Dinge zum Lebenserhalt bekommen. Nach chilenischen und US-amerikanischen Medien zufolge, war eines dieser Geräte ein Samsung Galaxy Beam, ein Android-Handy mit integriertem Pico-Projektor, das Anfang des Jahres vorgestellt wurde. Darauf wurden Videobotschaften von chilenischen Politikern abgespielt, um den Kumpeln Mut zuzusprechen. Außerdem wurde es ermöglicht diverse Filme und das Fußball-Freundschaftsspiel Chile gegen Ukraine abzuspielen, um den Opfern die Wartezeit ein wenig zu verkürzen.

(Link) Studie: Spiele sind beliebteste iPad-Anwendungen: Meine iPad-Ausgaben verteilen sich auf Spiele und, in der Regel beruflich genutzte, Applikationen. Spiele spiele ich auf iPhone und iPad, wobei es dort keine Unterscheidung in der Nutzung gibt: Viele Spiele habe ich auf beiden Geräten und nehme unterwegs eher das iPhone, zuhause dagegen eher das iPad.
Wo das iPhone durch die Mobilität punkten kann, punktet das iPad durch den großen Bildschirm: Sonic 4 und Reckless Racing funktionieren für mich auf dem kleinen iPhone-Bildschirm deutlich schlechter, weil dort zuviele Pixel durch meine Finger verdeckt werden.

Ortustech outs worldís smallest 1080p display at 4.8-inches
Orustech Japan has teamed with Casio and Toppan Printing to develop the worldís smallest 1080p display. It measures 4.8-inches diagonally and has a native resolution of 1920x1080 at an extremely high density of 458 pixels-per-inch (ppi). This is a much more densely packed display than the iPhone 4ís vaunted 3.5-inch Retina display, which has a 960x640 resolution at 326ppi.

Apple zieht im Smartphone-Markt an RIM vorbei
Wie GigaOm unter Berufung auf Zahlen von Strategy Analytics berichtet, hat Apple im dritten Quartal erstmals mehr Smartphones abgesetzt als Research In Motion. iPad's orientation lock to mute switch change will be permanent
When iOS 4.2 gets rolled out to iPad users sometime in the coming weeks, the button on the side that has until now prevented the screen from swapping between portrait and landscape will become a mute switch, just like it is on the iPhone. However, since this is clearly a software-managed control rather than being hard-wired, some users were hoping that this might be configurable somewhere in the settings.

Barnes & Noble spoils Nook Color itself, plans Nook Kids
Barnes & Noble tonight gave away its plans for its event on Tuesday with a product page (since pulled) for an accessory. Its own store made mention of a screen protector film for the Nook Color and showed an image of the device itself. CNET's view would be closer to a full tablet with a full touchscreen (likely LCD) in place of the split e-paper and mini-LCD on the existing Nooks.

Nook Color revealed by overzealous screen protector?
Barnes & Noble's done a pretty decent job of keeping a supposed Nook Color hidden from our prying eyes, but an errant accessory may have jumped the gun -- the "Nook Color Screen Film Kit," to be precise, whose product image is pictured immediately above. CNET discovered the protective film hanging out on Barnes & Noble's website, and quickly grabbed this picture before it could be removed. Even if we're legitimately looking at the new Nook, of course, this doesn't tell us much about the seemingly button-less product underneath. We'll go out on a limb and tell you it's got a color touchscreen.

I love old movies. I even wrote a book about a sixties movie producer. Some of the best of the old classics have slipped into the public domain, which means they're free. Some of the old PD titles have been put out on DVD over the years, but a great many are in a kind of film limbo, with no easy way to see them if they don't get picked up for DVD distribution.
I'd suggest one nice solution for the iPad. It's called Movie Vault, and basically it lets you stream more than a thousand public domain titles for your viewing enjoyment, either over WiFi or 3G. Facebook's next funding round may include Apple
Facebook's fifth round of venture capital funding could include an injection from Apple, a rumor may have revealed this evening. A new source said that the social network's Series E funding would be led by just two main companies, the existing investor Digital Sky Technologies and Apple. The Mashable tip would have the funding not only bring Facebook back into Ping but see it worked deeper into iLife, iTunes and iWork.

When will Microsoft bring Windows 8 to market? 2012's looking like a safe bet -- not only was it slated for that date in an allegedly leaked product roadmap, but Microsoft Netherlands hints that the OS is just two years away.
