Droid 2 Global appears in Verizon employee training system
We'd been wondering if the Droid 2 Global was just a beautiful figment of our imagination after the Droid Pro came out of left field, but it looks like the world-phone edition of Verizon's slider Droid is still coming -- it just appeared in the VZLearn employee training system. No idea when it'll actually hit, but we're guessing

Palm Pre 2 coming to Verizon?
It seems like we're getting closer and closer to the arrival of the Palm Pre 2 and webOS 2.0, and it looks like Verizon will be in the mix -- we were just sent this image of Big Red's internal VZLearn portal showing Pre 2 device training. We still don't know when it'll actually hit or what pricing will be like, and we don't know if it'll hit Sprint and AT&T as well like the OG Pre, but we're guessing we'll find out soon enough -- keep a sharp eye, we'll let you know.

No Comment: A diamond-encrusted iPhone 4
So, Apple's free bumper case wasn't enough for you? Do you want to encase your iPhone in something a little more erm, maybe "classy" isn't necessarily the word for this one. At any rate, as you can see above, customizer Stuart Hughes has enwrapped this iPhone 4 in over 500 diamonds (totaling over 100 karats), which are placed around the outside (that antenna gap has never looked so sparkly), on the Apple logo, and on the Home button. The back of the phone is plated in gold, and the unit comes in its own custom-made granite box. Total price: US$8 million.

Released today, "SwirlySMS free for iPad 3G" offers a free SMS solution that allows you to send and receive messages from your iPad 3G. This is a jailbreak-only solution. Available from the Cydia store, the new app uses your iPad's SIM to introduce native texting without having to hack your way into command-line solutions.
The application should work with any supported SIM that offers SMS features. You will be charged for SMS text messages according to the plan associated with your SIM card. Panasonic dates, prices pro Micro Four Thirds video camera
Panasonic has dated and priced its first-ever Micro Four Thirds camcorder, the pro-level AG-AF100. First shown back in April, the camera will begin shipping on December 27 and cost $4,995. It is capable of recording native 1080p24 video but also offers variable frame rates and professional audio.

MobileMe Calendar web app out of beta
Apple has announced that the MobileMe Calendar web app is now officially out, leaving beta and becoming available to all MobileMe customers. The service allows you to check or update your MobileMe calendar from any computer or iOS device, share or publish calendars out to friends, family, or coworkers, and even send invitations straight from the calendar for upcoming events.

Steve Jobs gives iPods to rescued Chilean miners
Apple CEO Steve Jobs is giving iPods to each of the 33 miners rescued from a cave-in in northern Chile, according to Reuters. No other details are available on the gifts, though the players are likely to be fourth-generation Touches for the sake of promotional value. The miners were trapped underground for 68 days, 17 of which went without contact from the surface.

More on Verizon iPad: plans up to 5GB, new iPads needed
Verizon has quickly filled in details of its iPad + MiFi bundles beyond what was introduced this morning. It added that, beyond the $20 plan for 1GB, there will also be 3GB available for $35 each month and 5GB for $50 per month. Every plan is a steep discount over Verizon's regular plans, which include just 250MB for $35 and 5GB for $60.

John Sculley on Steve Jobs' guiding principles
In an unprecedented interview, former Apple CEO John Sculley discusses his relationship, past and present, with Steve Jobs. Initially pulled from Pepsi Co. by Steve Jobs in 1983, Sculley ran Apple with Jobs until Jobs was ousted in 1985. Sculley then ran Apple as the sole CEO until 1993.

A helmsman's chair that would make James T. Kirk green with envy
NorSap is a Norwegian firm that manufactures those impressive chairs for the helmsmen and pilots on sea-going vessels. These chairs are extremely rugged, as they need to be able to stand up to rough conditions, but they also need to be adjustable to fit a variety of body sizes and comfortable enough to sit in during a long watch.

Teens using mobile Internet much more, voice much less
Teens with cellphones are using them for mobile data much more than in the past, Nielsen determined in a new study. Although messaging is still the favorite, about 49 percent of those aged 13 to 17 were using their phones for full Internet access in the spring, not just MMS or SMS. The number was up from 40 percent a year earlier and was mirrored by apps and e-mail, which shot up nearly as much to hit 38 percent.

Pocket Frogs hits 2m downloads, adds social features, raises money for real-life frogs
I continue to enjoy NimbleBit's Pocket Frogs title -- it's a free download on the App Store (supported by in-app purchases of convenience items) that has you collecting, breeding, and selling little frogs in thousands of combinations of colors, patterns, and types.
I'm not the only one enjoying the game, either. NimbleBit tells TUAW that after a month of availability on the App Store, the game has 300,000 daily active users, and it has been downloaded over two million times. That's quite impressive. Macworld 2011 conference opens to registrations
Registrations are now being taken for the Macworld 2011 expo. The event will last from January 26th to the 29th, and take place at Moscone Center West, located in San Francisco. Until December 2nd, special discounts are being offered on all entry fees; costs run from $25 for an expo-only pass through to a $725 Super Pass. Intel sees phones, tablets as "ìmarathon, not a sprint"
Intel chief Paul Otellini in a memo that surfaced today tried to downplay the early leads that ARM-based devices like the iPad and Android phones had over Intel in the mobile space. He characterized bringing Atom up to par as a "marathon, not a sprint" and that it was only a matter of time before Intel won the category. The CEO used server chips as an example in the Bloomberg copy of the e-mail and noted that it went from a bit player to making 90 percent of the processors for the field.

Found Footage: Chinese Steve Jobs clone intros new iPhone app
The amazing presentation skills of Steve Jobs have been the topic of many articles, but it's downright rare to see an entire press event done by a Steve Jobs clone -- especially one who is speaking in Chinese.
The press conference in question was held yesterday in Hong Kong to celebrate the launch of the MTR Mobile subway app. This is an impressive app, using augmented reality to show the location of stations, displaying schedules and maps, and including a helpful route planner. Analyst: BlackBerry Storm3 still alive, PlayBook 2 late 2011
Jefferies & Co. this week issued a research note that insisted that RIM hadn't cancelled the Storm3 and that a second BlackBerry PlayBook tablet was in the works. It claimed that the model with the click-down SurePress screen had indeed been cancelled but that a version without, like the Torch, was on track for late November. The Storm3 that ships would still be very mild with 512MB of RAM, BlackBerry 6 and a five-megapixel camera as its only upgrades over the 2009 phone.

Seventh Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta shows no major differences
Apple is seeding a seventh build of Mac OS X 10.6.5 to developers, 10H555. The code makes no significant changes, and has no known issues. Developers are being asked to continue testing many of the same areas as before, in particular printing, QuickTime, Time Machine, 3D rendering and USB devices.

Office 2008 12.2.7 update fixes Excel, Entourage issues
Microsoft has posted a fresh update for Office 2008, v12.2.7. The patch is a relatively minor one, correcting just three issues. Some crashes triggered when starting Excel have been eliminated, and Entourage should no longer create duplicates in an Exchange 2007 mailbox. Entourage has also been scrubbed to solve problems with Exchange authentication using the Kerberos protocol; the program previously had trouble detecting expired credentials and renewing tickets.

You may know that you can expand and collapse Finder folders in a tree view using the left and right arrow keys. But did you know that you can expand or collapse all of the root-level folders at once? It's a cool trick that can save you a lot of time when navigating your Mac's files. With the Finder window focused (click anywhere inside the file view), just type Command-A to select all, then use the left or right arrow to collapse or expand all of the folders simultaneously. Cult of Mac hat ein äusserst lesenswertes Interview mit John Sculley veröffentlicht. John Sculley amtete während zehn Jahren als Apples CEO, ehe er 1993 seinen Posten räumen musste. Ursprünglich war Sculley auf Jobs’ Wunsch hin verpflichtet worden, doch nur zwei Jahre nach seinem Einstieg bei Apple hatten sich die beiden zerstritten, worauf Steve Jobs das Unternehmen verliess. AMD's Radeon HD 6000 series should finally get a launch at the end of next week based on slips from multiple outlets. About four days ago, I was sitting in a waiting room about to board a train. Bored, and a little restless, I pulled out my iPhone 3G to take a look at the App Store to see if there was anything new I could download to kill some time. According to IDC, Apple's PC market share (those are Macs or Macintoshes as we old-timers call them) is now at 10.6%, nudging Acer from the number 3 spot in the US. There is "much progress being made" towards the development of multi-touch Macs, says Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu, citing industry sources. What's the catch? Big red will be selling iPads bundled with MiFi 2200s. Starting at $US630 for the 16GB model + a MiFi, the bundles go up to $730 for the 32G model and $830 for the 64GB model.

AT&T to sell 3G iPad in-store on October 28
AT&T chose not to let Verizon's iPad deal go unanswered today and said it would carry the iPad in its own stores on October 28. The original iPad supporter will stock only the existing 3G iPads rather than the Wi-Fi plus MiFi combos at the rival carrier. Its plans remain the same and give 250MB of monthly, prepaid bandwidth for $15 or 2GB for $25; iPad buyers don't need to sign up in-store.

Netflix on PS3 goes disc-free, gets 1080i streaming and 5.1 surround sound
Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Verizon to sell Wi-Fi iPads with MiFi bundles, special plans
Verizon surprised the industry today by striking an official deal with Apple to carry the iPad in its stores. The deal will use the Wi-Fi models of each but bundle them with a Novatel MiFi 2200 to share a 3G connection with both the iPad and four other devices. Verizon is also offering a special iPad plan that gives these buyers 1GB of data for the MiFi every month for $20.

The iBookstore six months after launch: One big failure
It's been over six months since the release of the iPad on April 3rd, and the simultaneous launch of iBooks and the iBookstore, which promised to give Amazon's Kindle and Kindle Store a run for its money. I figured that this would be a good time to see just how the iBookstore has progressed. The answer, in a word: poorly. Very poorly.
The Kindle store currently advertises that they have over 700,000 books, magazines and blogs available for download. Apple hasn't released statistics on the number of currently available books, so an accurate comparison isn't easy

Office 2011 für Mac erhält hervorragende Kritiken
In zwölf Tagen erscheint die nächste Version von Microsoft Office für den Mac. Doch schon vor dem Verkaufsstart sind erste Reviews aufgetaucht. Und darin macht Office 2011 über weite Strecken eine äusserst gute Figur, ganz im Gegensatz zum eher ungeliebten Vorgänger (zum Office-2008-Review von macprime). Walt Mossberg vom Wall Street Journal zeigt sich insbesondere über die Integration von Outlook begeistert. Bisher blieb Outlook der Windows-Version von Microsoft Office vorbehalten, Mac-User mussten sich mit einem nicht vollständig zu Outlook kompatiblen Alternativprogramm namens Entourage abfinden.
Eine willkommene Neuerung ist auch die an die Windows-Fassung angeglichene Benutzeroberfläche mit den so genannten Ribbons. Im Gegensatz zur Windows-Version besitzt Office für Mac aber weiterhin sämtliche Menüs, so dass man Office auch auf die gewohnte Art und Weise bedienen kann. Netflix this morning said it would add 5.1-channel surround sound to its Internet streaming component. Dolby Digital Plus will be embedded in movies and give any supporting title the extra audio depth. The movie service argued that it wanted a format that could reach as many devices as possible.

See that tiny black box? It's a streaming audio hub, designed specifically for the hard of hearing who have Siemens earphones buried in their lobes. Connect special Tek transmitters to traditional TVs and stereos, or hook it up directly to a phone, audio player or PC over Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack, and the matchbox-sized, two-ounce remote will wirelessly stream stereo audio from two devices for up to five hours a time. EuGH: Telekom muss 12,6 Millionen Euro Strafe zahlen
Der Europäische Gerichtshof hat die Deutsche Telekom in letzter Instanz wegen Wettbewerbsbehinderung zu einem Bußgeld von 12,6 Millionen Euro verurteilt. Das Gericht bestätigte damit eine Entscheidung der EU-Kommission aus dem Jahr 2003, gegen die die Telekom wiederholt Rechtsmittel eingelegt hatte.

Ubisoft hat mittlerweile Assassin’s Creed II veröffentlicht und auch gleich nach wenigen Tagen (seufz) um 3 US$ gesenkt, so dass das Spiel momentan nur 5,49€ kostet [AppStore]. Die Fortsetzung zu Assassin’s Creed – Altaïr’s Chronicles (hier besprochen) verlässt das Puzzle Platformer-Genre des Vorgängers und kommt als schnell zu spielendes Jump ’n’ Run mit hübsch animierten 3D-Kampfeinlagen. Es ist schwer, Gameloft im Rennspiel-Bereich zu übersehen: Asphalt 4, Ferrari GT, Shrek Kart, Gangstar, Asphalt 5 und Driver stellen wahre Platzhirsche dar, an denen andere erst einmal vorbei müssen. Dennoch weisen die meisten Gameloft-Racer große Schwachstellen auf, sei es in der Grafik, dem Geschwindigkeitsgefühl oder der Steuerung. Auch das bei uns gepriesene Asphalt 5, bei welchem man erstmals die Tilt-Steuerung auf brauchbare Empfindlichkeit einstellen konnte, ist bei schnellen Fahrzeugen nur noch wenig spielbar, da man ständig in den Begrenzung rast.
Jetzt stellt gerade Gameloft für 5,49€ [AppStore] eine Rennsimulation vor und greift damit Real Racing (hier besprochen) an. Kann das gut gehen? Der Umfang ist ordentlich

Giana Sisters - Endlich ein vollständiger Platformer!
(Bild nicht mehr verfügbar) Hinter Giana Sisters steckt eine abenteuerliche Geschichte: Für von Nintendo nicht belieferte Spielesysteme wie den C64 (YouTube) oder Amiga 500 erschien 1987 The Great Giana Sisters. Der sehr offensichtliche Klon von Nintendos Super Mario Brothers (teilweise waren die Level komplett identisch) wurde kurz darauf auf Drängen von Nintendo vom Markt genommen. Ersteindruck: Spiele auf dem iPad
(Bild nicht mehr verfügbar) Nach nunmehr fünf Tagen mit dem iPad vage ich ein Fazit: Für mich ist es die ultimative Spielmaschine. Hat das iPhone meinen DS verdrängt, so scheint das iPad nun das iPhone zu verdrängen. Größere Spielfläche, bessere Bedienbarkeit, besserer Klang und die höhere Prozessorgeschwindigkeit (das iPad ist insgesamt noch immer schneller als das iPhone 4) sorgen für lebendigere Spiele und eine viel stärkeres Gefühl, “im” Spiel zu sein. Für mich vor allem verblüffend: Gerade Rennspiele mit Accelerometer-Steuerung profitieren vom iPad.(Bild nicht mehr verfügbar) Mit knapp 700 Gramm ist das iPad nicht eben ein Leichtgewicht. Die Presse und das iPad: Wie liest es sich am Besten?
Heute gibt es ausnahmsweise einen Nicht-Spiele-Artikel.Geradezu euphorisch hat die Presse auf das iPad reagiert und es soll nichts geringeres einläuten als die Rettung der Buch- und Verlagsbranche. Das ist umso bemerkenswerter, sind doch eine Vielzahl derer Probleme hausgemacht, wie das fehlende Micropayment auf Webseiten, Artikel mit Informationen von gestern, nachgeplapperte Tickermeldungen oder schlicht schlecht oder gar nicht recherchierte Artikel. Das iPad soll nun immerhin den Inhalt vom Totholzmedium entbinden und somit einer neuen Generation schmackhaft machen. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode 1
Das hat gedauert: Nach Jahren der mäßigen 3D-Projekte, genrefremden Sportspielen und Flippern, sowie Remakes der klassischen 2D-Varianten erscheint nun endlich wieder ein neues 2,5D-Sonic und führt die vor 16 Jahren abgebrochene Geschichte um den Helden Sonic und den Erzfeind Dr. Egghead weiter (7,99€, AppStore).
Dass sich das Spiel am Klassiker orientiert, beweist vor allem der erste Level, ist die optische Ähnlichkeit zu früheren Sonic-Spielen hier doch verblüffend. Wie gewohnt rast man durch Ebenen und Loopings, sammelt Ringe auf und greift Gegner per Sprung an. Zum Glück hat Sega Speicherpunkte integriert, unterstützt das Fast-App-Switching des iOS 4 und erlaubt den jederzeitigen Wechsel zu allen der mitgelieferten Levelwelten.

Seit dem Start dieser Website im Januar 2009 hat sich der Spiele-Markt um den AppStore stark verändert. Von ehemals vereinzelt gelungenen Spielen sind wir mittlerweile an einem Punkt angekommen, an dem täglich erwähnenswerte Spiele erscheinen, welche mit dem iPhone/iPod Touch und iPad zwei sehr unterschiedliche Plattformen ansprechen. Aber nicht nur die Qualität der Spiele hat sich verbessert, auch die Quantität hat sich stark erhöht. Mein RSS-Reader befüllt sich täglich mit etwa 800 Einträgen, die neue Spiele oder Änderungen an bestehenden Spielen betreffen. Dem Herr zu werden, ist kaum möglich, denn das Schreiben und Bebildern einer simplen News-Meldung schlägt schon mit einer Stunde Arbeit zugrunde. Reviews benötigen gleich mindestens die vierfache Zeit.

Sony posts NEX firmware to rework UI, support A-mount lenses
Sony Europe on Thursday gave its NEX cameras firmware 03, its promised feature and interface upgrade to address some of the issues with the mirrorless swappable lens cameras. Both the NEX-3 and NEX-5 now support full-size Alpha mount lenses, with autofocus, when paired with an LA-EA1 adapter to fit the smaller body. Shallow depth of field is now an option in movie capture as the camera can use aperture priority to shoot videos.

Weltweiter PC-Markt wächst um 11 Prozent im dritten Quartal
Der weltweite PC-Markt hat im dritten Quartal ein Wachstum von 11 Prozent verzeichnet. Laut IDCs Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker wurden zwischen Juli und September 89,6 Millionen Computer verkauft. Im Vorjahreszeitraum waren es noch 80,8 Millionen Stück gewesen. Die Marktforscher hatten mit einer Steigerung von 14 Prozent gerechnet.

Mac-Marktanteil erstmals seit langem über zehn Prozent - in den USA
Im dritten Quartal des Kalenderjahres 2010 (Juli bis September) betrug Apples Marktanteil im PC-Geschäft in den Vereinigten Staaten erstmals seit langer Zeit wieder über zehn Prozent. Dies geht übereinstimmend aus aktuellen Untersuchungen der Marktforschungsunternehmen Gartner und IDC hervor. Beide bescheinigen Apples Mac-Geschäft hohe Wachstumszahlen.
Gartners Berechnungen zufolge kommt Apple auf einen Marktanteil von 10.4 Prozent und liegt damit hauchdünn hinter Acer auf Rang vier der grössten PC-Hersteller. IDC hingegen schätzt den Marktanteil Apples auf 10.6 Prozent, womit Apple bereits an Acer vorbeigezogen wäre. Unangefochten an der Spitze der Ranglisten liegen HP und Dell mit je knapp 25 Prozent Marktanteil.

Canon: Einsteiger-DSLR mit Schreibproblemen

Elbit wins $68 million defense contract to supply OLED-equipped HUDs
We still haven't heard about any takers for the company's "hunter-killer' robot, but Elbit Systems has just scored a big contract for some of its other military gear. AOL contemplating buying Yahoo
AOL is in the very early stages of exploring a buyout of Yahoo, a leak this evening indicated. Private equity groups such as Blackstone Group and Silver Lake Partners have considered buying the search engine out but have reportedly talked to AOL about joining on a deal. Prospects mentioned to the WSJ would have China's Alibaba buy back Yahoo's 40 percent stake in its efforts to simplify a merger or even letting the normally much larger Yahoo buy AOL.

New Apple Store opening in the St. Louis Galleria this weekend
This weekend Apple will open up its 305th retail store in the St. Louis Galleria mall, right there at Brentwood and 40-64 (which I heard finally finished construction recently). Saturday is day one, and the store should be open at 9am, so if you want to be around for the festivities (including the t-shirts and the hoopla), make plans for this Saturday morning.

Windows Phone 7 will sync 'select content' with Macs
Honestly, I haven't been super impressed with anything I've seen coming out of all of the Windows Phone 7 hoopla this week. Sure, the phones look pretty and all, and yes, it's a huge upgrade for Windows Mobile users, but it still seems to me like Microsoft is just trying to match the iPhone rather than actually overcome it. I don't see anything in the offerings that would make me abandon my much-loved iPhone 4. That said, Mac users who have to use Windows Phone 7 (perhaps because it's what you get from work) will enjoy hearing that the system will indeed sync up with Mac computers, a first for Microsoft gadgets. Tango app dancing to a happy tune
That was fast. The Tango video chatting app for the iPhone has topped one million downloads in the ten days since it launched in the iTunes store.
The free app allows phone-to-phone video chat, but unlike the Apple FaceTime app, Tango doesn't require WiFi. It works just fine over 3G networks, and also unlike FaceTime, it allows chatting with people on many models of Android phones too.
The company reports 40% of the downloads of the app are from the U.S., but users in 125 countries have grabbed Tango.

IDC: Apple's now third largest PC vendor in US with 10.6 percent market share
Apple might be billing its next big event as "Back to the Mac," but don't let that fool you into thinking its computer platform has been waning. Apple awarded patent on optional texting controls
Apple has been granted a patent that extends the company's existing Parental Controls for iOS devices into the various text messaging and email apps that ship with those devices, allowing certain content to be filtered based on pre-defined criteria. Interestingly, the patent also covers the possibility of requiring, rather than blocking, certain words.

ADATA's S007 military spec USB flash drive is designed for the battlefield
It doesn't boast the eSATA / USB 3.0 capabilities of the N909, but ADATA's new S007 is easily the tougher of the two. Designed to be fully compliant with US MIL-SPEC standards, this new USB key is available in capacities up to 32GB and should provide careless handlers with "unrivaled digital data protection from both impacts and electric shocks." Both of 'em (it's available in green and red) are wrapped in a rubber coating, and transfer at USB 2.0 speeds (upwards of 30MB/sec on the read side and 8MB/sec on the write side), but sadly, there's no mention of a price or release date.
