Lexmark Genesis AIO printer uses camera for instant scans
Lexmark today sought to shake up the normally very conservative world of printers by introducing the Genesis. The design is unusual just by standing upright but is more unique still by using a 10-megapixel camera for scanning. It can capture the entire frame almost instantly and can convert the scan to a full image in as little as three seconds.

TomTom for iPhone now lets your photo gallery be your address book
This is a feature in that "gee, I wish I'd of thought of that" category. The latest update to the TomTom app (version 1.5) lets you select any photo that has been geo-tagged and navigate to that location. It's great for finding that favorite picnic spot, or that great photo location.
I tried the feature out today, navigating to 2 locations I had in my iPhone photo roll. In each case, the app showed a map of the location, and with a couple of clicks I was on my way.
The app also now supports the iPhone 4 Retina display and the speed of the app is supposed to be faster but I didn't see anything dramatic. TomTom U.S.A and U.S. & Canada apps are currently available for $49.99 and $59.99

Nikon D7000 gets first sales, unboxings
Nikon's much anticipated D7000 DSLR is now getting unboxed by several users, as rumors that the camera arrived in Best Buy stores proved true. The D90 successor was supposed to go on sale starting on Sunday, October 17, but it appears several stores have broken the rule, with at least one new owner picking it up on Thursday. The camera lists for $1,200 body-only or $1,500 bundled with an 18-105mm lens.

AutoCAD for Mac 2011 now available for purchase
Mac-loving engineers, drafters, designers, and students have been waiting for a Mac-native version of AutoCAD to reappear on the platform for many years, so when Apple and Autodesk announced AutoCAD for Mac 2011 in late August, there was a lot of excitement.

More MacBook Air: "significantly lower" price, still Core 2
Apple's 11.6-inch MacBook Air has already received a follow-up rumor that suggests the update may have only a modest update to the processor but compensate in nearly every other area. It would still use a Core 2 Duo, possibly like the S series in the existing Air, but would upgrade to the GeForce 320M (MCP89) for a boost to graphics. Foxconn parent company raising prices for Apple, others
This is the downside of being Apple -- just as they get prices and costs to where they want them, those same prices and costs tend to go up again. Foxconn's parent company Hon Hai has reported that it will raise its manufacturing prices in China, directly affecting Apple's and other companies' costs over there. The company is reportedly trying to push profits up for the last quarter of this year, and aims to raise sales by as much as 30% next year.
Of course, this probably isn't a surprise for Apple -- given how closely the company researches and follows component costs, this is likely something already baked in to their strategy (and even if it's not, $40 billion

Report: six percent of Americans have made a video call
A recent Pew Research study found that 6% of Americans have participated in a video call with a mobile phone. That number has risen since the iPhone 4's introduction, and is now comparable to the 19% of Americans who have used video conferencing in one way or another.
The study was conducted in mid-August and mid-September, just two months after the iPhone 4 was released in the US, UK, Germany, France and Japan. Pew Research found that wealthy users (those making above US$75,000 per year) under 50 years of age were most likely to have made a video call with a mobile phone.
While new to the US, video phone calling has existed in other countries for some time. However, poor display resolution and call quality has prevented it from catching on in any

Leak: 11.6-inch MacBook Air due Oct. 20 with bare-metal SSD
Apple's October 20 event should focus on the rumored 11.6-inch MacBook Air with a particular twist in storage, a leak this afternoon claimed. Multiple sources, at least one known to be accurate, said the ultraportable would use barebones SSDs for storage instead of the 1.8-inch fully enclosed drives used now. These wouldn't be as easily replaceable by users, AppleInsider said, but take up much less space in the tight confines of an even smaller system.

RBC calls for 13.5 million in Q4 iPhone sales
Apple will show sales of 13.5 million iPhones in Monday's Q4 results call, says RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky. The estimate is extremely high, surpassing even a Rodman & Renshaw forecast of 13.3 million, itself considered optimistic. Abramsky's revenue and EPS predictions for the quarter are likewise $20.3 billion and $4.48, in excess of numbers from other research firms like Piper Jaffray and UBS.

First Looks: Griffin Elan Folio for iPad
Borrowing design elements from both prior Griffin leather cases and Apple's official iPad Case, Elan Folio for iPad ($50) offers the same fold-back front lid that converts into a stand for video or typing, and an interior iPad holder with a hole cut out for the device's ambient light sensor. Are higher iPhone 4 accident rates really something to worry about?
A report that surfaced from SquareTrade a couple days ago claims that accident rates are higher on the iPhone 4 than its 3GS sibling.
SquareTrade says that in the first four months of the iPhone 4 being out in the wild, there is an 82 percent increase in reported broken screens over the rate on the 3GS. Thing is, SquareTrade counts the back of the iPhone as a screen, not just the front display, and reports that broken glass on the back of the iPhone accounts for 25 percent of the issues they've run into.

Cannon Cadets now includes level builder, scoring, and a TUAW level
Back in August, XMG Studio released a fun game called Cannon Cadets (US$0.99), and it quickly became popular with those of us who love games where we shoot or fling things at targets. Gartner: iPad to push tablets to 54.8m, threaten netbooks
The iPad will be the primary factor in both high tablet sales this year and three times as many sales next year, Gartner said in a new estimate today. Continuing very strong sales of Apple's tablet would push overall tablet sales to 19.5 million for all of 2010 and 54.8 million in 2011. By 2014, the category could be larger than netbooks with over 208 million units sold.

In advance of Q4 earnings call: AAPL hits $310, 45m iPads expected to sell in 2011
All of us at TUAW are looking forward to the Apple 4th Quarter earnings call on Monday afternoon, which we will be liveblogging right here on the site. With some of the wonderful news coming out from Wall Street and financial analysts today, our very own Mike Rose says that the earnings call should "have a mariachi band and a fire-eater." Developers: BlackBerry "not really on our radar" for games
BlackBerry phones aren't even registering for game developers, an examination of the app community uncovered on Friday [sub. required]. Plants vs. Zombies developer PopCap said the BlackBerry simply wasn't being supported in its current form as it wasn't suitable compared to Android and iOS. Apart from a development environment that until recently was difficult to use, the smartphone platform has virtually no performance emphasis, as even the BlackBerry Torch uses a two-year-old Marvell processor.

I'm a sucker for retro 8-bit games, and the addicting iPhone/iPad game The Incident is no exception. Its interface is simplistic, but gameplay is fast and fun. What's more, it's a universal app that costs only $1.99 -- a bargain!
The app has just recently undergone a significant update, including a new "Endless Night" mode, additional objects and music, and new balloon power-ups/downs. But the neatest addition to the app is the ability to use your iPad as the gameplay screen and an iPhone as the controller!

iPad builds ramping to 3M per month, says analyst
iPad production is on a path to hit about 3 million units per month during the current quarter, says Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu. Citing supply chain checks, Wu moreover claims that production could continue escalating into the first half of 2011, although only if needed. During the winter months in most of the world, you can see pump bottles of antibacterial gel scattered around most businesses as workers and visitors try to keep their hands free of pathogens. Now, a spate of suspiciously similar news items today are warning that the glass screens on iPhones, iPads, and iPods can harbor bacteria.

Aliph's "Nerd Dongle" hits FCC, may help Bluetooth-less PCs
An unusual FCC filing discovered today has suggested that Aliph is branching out beyond pure headsets. Nicknamed only the "Nerd Dongle," its only technical details reveal that it runs on the 2.4GHz wireless frequency used by Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It superficially resembles a USB adapter like the "nano" receivers used by Logitech and Microsoft and has the Jawbone branding of Aliph's existing headsets.

Tiki Toss 3D is pick up and play fun with an island theme
OK, so there's not a lot to Tiki Toss 3D, but it's one of those enjoyable little games you can flip on while you wait in line (much to the bemusement of Windows Phone 7 friends). If you've ever played Bimini ring toss, where you try to get a ring suspended by a string onto a hook mounted on a wall (or small board), then you will be familiar with Tiki Toss.
Interface
The interface is simple enough. After choosing the type of game you want (Best of 10, Session or Arcade) and level of difficulty (Amateur or Pro) you hit Play to begin. You'll start with the screen shown to the right, a ring suspended in air, waiting to be thrown.

Lincoln Park Apple Store to open on October 23rd
Apple has announced that its Lincoln Park retail store, long under construction, will finally open to the public on October 23rd at 10AM. The shop is located at 801 W. North Avenue in Chicago, which is also near the intersection of North Clybourn and North Halstead. Regular store hours will run from 9AM to 9PM Monday through Saturday, and from 11AM to 7PM on Sunday. The first workshops start on Sunday, October 24th.

Study reminder: touchscreen devices spread sickness
A recently published study from the Journal of Applied Microbiology came back to light today in an interview late Thursday discussing the risks of getting sick from touchscreen devices. Stanford University PhD student Tim Julian noted that about 30 percent of the bacteria, viruses and other organisms on a surface are picked up on contact, making the iPad, iPhone and Android devices more likely to spread illnesses. He explained to the Sacramento Bee that the issue mostly becomes acute when owners share their devices, which can be more common with touch displays.

Autodesk ships AutoCAD 2011 for Mac
As promised in August, Autodesk has begun shipping the first new Mac version of AutoCAD to be released in over 18 years. The program carries over most features of the recent Windows editions, and uses similar interface tropes. New York Times replaces Editor's Choice app with full content
The New York Times has replaced its limited "Editor's Choice" iPad app with a new version that provides the newspaper's full content, pending the user's (free) registration. The app will be free for users until "early 2011."
Unlike Editor's Choice, the new version (simply called NYTimes for iPad) includes articles from every section of the publication. You can navigate each via a pop-up list. Select any one to read the related articles.
You'll notice that a banner pops up prompting you to register. The process is as simple as entering a username and a password, and will push you out of the app and into Safari to finish the process. Once complete, you must click a ink in a confirmation email. The next time you launch the app, the banners will be gone.

One of the focuses for the next MacBook Air may be on an iPad level of responsiveness, John Gruber said in a podcast posted late Thursday. AT&T to sell iPad directly to corporate buyers, hurt RIM
AT&T expanded on its direct iPad sales today by promising that it would sell the iPad directly to all of its business customers. All three 3G capacities will be available direct to corporate accounts the same day as the public, on October 28. Companies also won't have to use prepaid service and should have access to regular subscription data plans, although the carrier didn't outline prices other than to say they would be "attractive."

Iomega unveils external SSD drive with USB 3.0
Iomega threw itself into external solid-state drives today through the External SSD Flash Drive. The storage uses a 1.8-inch SSD that lets it occupy a very small footprint but still outperform a rotating hard drive: it claims peak read speeds of 191MB per second and peak writes of 130MB. The drive is accordingly outfitted with a USB 3.0 port that can handle the added speeds.

Today seems to be a day for news from China, the birthplace of most Apple hardware. This little tidbit of info comes courtesy of Noosy, AKA Shenzhen North Technology Co., Ltd.
The company has developed an HDMI adapter for the iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, and iPad, so you can now pop the little adapter onto your iDevice and blast video from apps that support video-out to your HDTV.

Blackra1n-Entwickler George Hotz alias Geohot hat mit "limera1n" ein neues Jailbreak-Tool für iOS 4.0 und 4.1 veröffentlicht. Sony Ericsson tumbles to 10.4m phones, still makes profit
Sony Ericsson today said it had swung to a profit even as its market share continued to drop. The company shipped just 10.4 million phones, a drop from 14.1 million a year earlier, but posted a profit of about $69 million where it had lost $231 million 12 months ago. It came as Sony Ericsson revealed that more than half of its phone sales were of smartphones like the Xperia X10.

Man, I love everything about Game Dev Story -- from the excellent premise to the cute, pixelated aesthetic to the great simulation gameplay. The idea is that you run your own game studio, and that idea is executed flawlessly. You hire your staff, choose a game genre (or do some contract work if you need extra cash), and then build up your game in terms of fun, graphics, sound, and gameplay, all while trying to keep your staff paid and avoid bugs when possible. Finally, you ship out your game and hope the reviews come back well, even while you're planning out your next title.

Updated Skype for Mac "coming soon"
On Thursday, Skype unveiled Skype 5.0 for Windows. Among some pretty cool new features are group video calling and Facebook integration. The Facebook integration lets you view your Facebook news feed, sync your Skype mood messages and Facebook status, and call friends from your Facebook phone book. They're all cool features, and they're all for Windows, but not for long.

Sony Ericsson meldet erneut steigenden Gewinn
Sony Ericsson hat im dritten Quartal 2010 (bis 30. September) seinen Profit zum dritten Mal in Folge steigern können. Wie aus der heute vorgelegten Bilanz hervorgeht, verzeichnete das japanisch-schwedische Joint Venture einen Nettogewinn von 49 Millionen Euro, nach 12 Millionen Euro im Vorquartal. Im dritten Vierteljahr 2009 hatte der Handyhersteller noch einen Verlust von 164 Millionen Euro ausgewiesen.

AMD meldet Verlust im dritten Quartal
AMD hat im dritten Quartal 1,62 Milliarden Dollar (1,15 Milliarden Euro) eingenommen, 16 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Trotz der Umsatzsteigerung weist die gestern veröffentliche Bilanz des Unternehmens einen GAAP-Nettoverlust von 118 Millionen Dollar (83 Millionen Dollar) oder 0,17 Dollar je Aktie aus. In den Monaten Juli bis September 2009 hatte AMD einen Fehlbetrag von 128 Millionen Dollar gemeldet.

Google kann Umsatz weiter steigern
Im abgelaufenen Quartal konnte Google den Umsatz weiter steigern. Er beträgt nun mittlerweile 7,29 Milliarden US-Dollar, was im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum einer Steigerung um 23 Prozent entspricht. A Stanford University study found that if you put a virus on a touchscreen surface then about 30 percent of it will make the jump to the fingertips of anyone who touches it. An example of the oft-delayed white iPhone 4 was spotted by Pocket-lint being used by an unknown man in a New York café. After taking some covert photos the journalist then queried the owner about how he had managed to secure a white iPhone 4, which was originally unveiled by Steve Jobs on June 7. Wer als iPhone-Nutzer mit o2 oder Vodafone-Tarifen heute ein Update für die Netzbetreiber-Einstellungen angeboten bekommt, sollte Vorsicht walten lassen – Nutzer eines kleinen Datentarifs bei o2 müssen unter anderem damit rechnen, dass Tethering deaktiviert wird.

Apple gibt überarbeiteten MobileMe-Kalender frei
MobileMe-Anwender können seit gestern einen neu gestalteten Kalender nutzen. Der neue Kalender wurde bereits im Mai angekündigt, im Juli erschien eine Betaversion, doch erst jetzt kommen alle Anwender in den Genuss der Neuerungen. Zu den wichtigsten Verbesserungen zählt die Möglichkeit, gemeinsam nach Terminen zu suchen und Kalender für eine Gruppe zu veröffentlichen. Ausserdem hat Apple die Kalenderansichten in der Web-App neu gestaltet. Neben der Tages-, Wochen- und Monatsansicht ist auch eine Listenansicht möglich. Der neue MobileMe-Kalender setzt iOS 4 auf dem iPhone und dem iPod touch, iOS 3.2 auf dem iPad und Mac OS X 10.6.4 auf Mac-Computern voraus.

Google übertrifft Erwartungen von Analysten im dritten Quartal
Google hat seine Bilanz für das dritte Quartal veröffentlicht. Der Nettogewinn des Suchanbieters kletterte um 32 Prozent auf 2,17 Milliarden Dollar (1,5 Milliarden Euro). Vor einem Jahr waren es noch 1,64 Milliarden Dollar. Der Non-GAAP-Gewinn pro Aktie, der bestimmte einmalige Ausgaben sowie Kosten für Aktien-Optionen nicht enthält, liegt mit 7,64 Dollar deutlich über den von Analysten vorausgesagten 6,67 Dollar.

Updates für Logic Pro und Logic Express
In der Nacht auf heute hat Apple ein Update für Logic Pro (193 MB) und Logic Express (140 MB) veröffentlicht. Logic 9.1.2 bietet verbesserte Kompatibilität zu Mac-Pro-Systemen mit sechs oder zwölf Prozessorkernen. Als weitere Verbesserungen nennt Apple die Unterstützung von REX-Files im 64-Bit-Modus und von iOS-Apps, welche das OSC-Protokoll verwenden sowie eine verbesserte Kompatibilität zu einigen Audio-Plugins.

Bisher waren Programme zum größten Teil nur über Googles eigenen App Store verfügbar. Sophos: Spamversand aus den USA nimmt weiter zu
Der Spamversand aus den USA hat zwischen dem zweiten und dritten Quartal deutlich zugenommen. Den jüngsten Zahlen von Sophos zufolge kamen 18,6 Prozent aller unerwünschten E-Mails aus den Vereinigten Staaten. AMD sees a tablet chip in its future, and an end to the core-count wars

It looks like design heads at Palm and Nokia have more or less swapped roles, as All Things D reports that Nokia's ex-MeeGo head Ari Jaaksi has just been hired by Palm -- a month after Nokia grabbed Palm's Peter Skillman to head up user experience and services for MeeGo. Google may be the best search engine available today, but it has several frustrations to me. One of the biggest is that it routinely forgets my preferred search settings. Remote Pallette lets you paint on your iPad with colors from your iPhone
The story a while back about connecting an iPhone to an iPad for a game of darts was pretty interesting, and here's another one in that vein: a new app called Remote Palette is universal for both devices, and will let you "paint" on the iPad, while controlling the colors used with the iPhone. "Dip" your finger into a certain color of paint on your iPhone, and then when you go to touch the iPad, that color will show up as you draw. New MobileMe Calendar launches for all users
Apple has announced that its new MobileMe calendar is now available for all users, after several months of beta development. The layout of the web-based app is now similar in appearance to the iPad's Calendar utility. Users can now switch between months and years using a slider control, while the interface also includes a List view and day summaries.

The FCC changes the CableCARD rules, but not dramatically
The long awaited rule changes pertaining to CableCARDs that was originally proposed in the FCC's Broadband Plan finally got some resolve today, we have to say we're not convinced things will get that much better. While the FCC failed to kill Tuning Adapters or make the CableLabs certification process any less painful, it did make some changes, which include:

Student who argued with Jobs accepts free Microsoft trip
A Long Island University journalism student who allegedly got into an e-mail argument with Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently accepted a free trip to the Windows Phone 7 launch courtesy of Microsoft and "would be uncomfortable" giving Apple any future business, C|Net reports, but claims the incident has not made her "hate Apple" or lose her ability to be objective about the company.

Google: $1 billion in mobile, OK with many Android stores
Google during a results call discussing its latest results revealed how much its results lean on mobile and addressed the prospects of an Amazon app store. In a first for the company, Senior VP of product management Jonathan Rosenberg mentioned mobile revenue and said that all of Google's mobile efforts, whether on Android, iPhone or elsewhere, were adding about $1 billion every year to its revenue. The figure put mobile at a large portion of the $7.29 billion in revenue the company reported today.

Dell reaches $100 million settlement in SEC fraud case
Dell announced back in June that it's set aside a $100 million reserve fund for a potential settlement, and it looks like it's now finally going to have to use it -- a federal judge has today approved a settlement with the government for that very amount in a long-standing civil fraud case brought by the SEC. Of particular note, CEO Michael Dell himself has agreed to pay a $4 million fine, although neither he nor the company has actually admitted to any wrongdoing in the settlement. Dell did say that the company is committed to implementing the range of reforms it's promised, however, and adds that "we will certainly live up to all the commitments

AMD vermeldet auch im dritten Quartal Verluste
Am Abend nach Börsenschluss hat AMD die Quartalszahlen für das abgelaufene dritte Quartal präsentiert. Auch diese standen im Zeichen einer vorab veröffentlichten Umsatzwarnung, weshalb die Analysten von etwa 1,61 Milliarden US-Dollar Umsatz ausgingen, AMD mit 1,618 Milliarden US-Dollar nahezu eine Punktlandung absolvierte.

FCC proposes fund to spread 3G, 4G to rural areas
The FCC at its monthly meeting today proposed the creation of a mobility fund. The concept would create a single-instance fund between $100 million and $300 million to deploy 3G and ultimately 4G in rural areas or other regions where any modern cellular data has been unavailable. Under the model, the FCC could use an inverted auction, giving contracts to whoever bids the lowest and adding additional carriers until no more money is available for a given area.

Sculley: CEO role at Apple was 'big mistake'
John Sculley -- once the CEO of Apple between 1983 to 1993 -- now admits that his hiring at the company was a "big mistake," according to a Cult of Mac interview. Formerly the president of Pepsi, Sculley was lured over to Apple because Steve Jobs was thought to be too young to be a CEO, and also because the company's board of directors hoped marketing success at Pepsi could be parlayed into mass-marketing computers. Jobs and Sculley were supposed to "work as partners," the latter notes, with their responsibilities split between technical issues and marketing.

Logic 9.1.2 updates fix Mac Pro, AU compatibility
Apple has posted matching v9.1.2 updates for Logic Pro and Logic Express, the company's professional-grade audio production suites. The patches are oriented strictly at stability and compatibility, most notably in terms of improving support for six- and 12-core Mac Pros. Compatibility has also been improved for some Audio Unit plugins.
