Gartner: Apple, Acer in dead heat for US market share
Gartner tonight followed up on IDC results by supporting views that Apple has closed on Acer in the US computer market. Apple in its view jumped to 10.4 percent share with 1.83 million Macs; the figure put it less than 17,000 computers away from Acer, whose share plummeted to 10.5 percent. The analyst group wasn't as optimistic about Apple's performance as it only would have shipped 13.7 percent more computers, although this was well over the 2.2 percent average.

Rumor: Apple talking with CDMA carriers in India
Adding to the already bloated CDMA iPhone rumor mill, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that Apple is in talks with Reliance Communications Ltd and Tata Teliservices Ltd to bring the much-talked-about CDMA equipped iPhone to India. Apparently, talks with Tata Teleservices Ltd have been going on for some 4 to 5 months now.
Similarly, this same CDMA iPhone is the one that has been repeatedly rumored to appear on - surprise, surprise - Verizon's network early next year, also according to

Nation-E's electric Hummer H1 can power itself and others
It may not be the first electric Hummer out on the roads -- we hear a certain Terminator-turned-Governor has one -- but Nation-E's so-called AngelH1 is something of a first nonetheless. Not only is it an all-electric Hummer H1, but it packs a 60 kW battery that lets it double as a mobile charging station for other vehicles, construction sites, or even buildings in an emergency situation. Apple scores limited pinch-to-zoom patent
Apple has won a limited though significant US patent on pinch-to-zoom gestures for multi-touch devices, reports say. A filing was originally submitted in December 29th, 2006, just days before the announcement of the first iPhone at Macworld. The document technically covers more than just zoom, making references to other pinch commands such as rotation.

Apple overtakes Acer, gets 10.6% US computer market share
Apple achieved a rare feat and outsold Acer in the US this summer, new IDC estimates showed today. The company is estimated to have shipped almost exactly 2 million Macs just to the US in the quarter, beating out the combined Acer and Gateway's 1.95 million. Apple grew more than twice as quickly as any other US vendor, reaching 10.6 percent of the market after it shipped about 24.1 percent more Macs over the same time last year.

Deal documents show Ngmoco's 50 million downloads, $10m losses in 2009
Stuart Dredge of MobileEntertainment did some digging into the paperwork behind the Ngmoco sale, and came back with some interesting figures about the company's financials. Turns out that rumored $403 million purchase price is true -- kind of. The deal includes a $100 million bonus, if Ngmoco keeps its numbers up to certain standards. The actual payment now is $303 million, which consists of $146 million in common stocks, $27 million in DeNA investments, and $128 million cash. That cash payment, Dredge reports, is about a third of DeNA's total cash balance, so this is a significant deal for both companies.

PS3 goes the PSP route to thwart jailbreakers: Medal of Honor requires latest firmware
It's not quite a common practice just yet, but it looks like the PlayStation 3 could be following in the PSP's footsteps in order to get around folks jailbreaking the device. As MCV reports, anyone buying Electronic Arts' new "Medal of Honor" game will first have to update their PS3 to the latest 3.50 firmware (conveniently provided on the disc) before playing -- that firmware also, of course, has the convenient side effect of blocking the ability to jailbreak the console. No word on any other games that will follow suit, but we have sneaking suspicion

Apple patents content filter for outbound text messages
Ever the kid-friendly outfit, Apple filed a patent in 2008 that aims to make text messaging safer for the children. TechCrunch reports that today, the US Patent and Trademark office awarded Apple a patent which puts a ban on sending obscene text messages sometimes called "sexting."
The technology will prevent an "administered device" -- such as an iPhone, maybe? -- from sending or receiving objectionable messages. The overall strictness of the filter is determined by the administrator of the device and would include settings by age or grade level.

'Completely redesigned' St. Louis store to open on Saturday
A "completely redesigned" Saint Louis Galleria Apple Store will open this Saturday at 9AM, Apple has announced. The shop will replace an earlier mini-store, and move to a space on the upper level of the mall occupying more than 6,000 square feet, with an entrance 55 feet wide. It will reportedly be Apple's largest-ever shop located inside a mall.

News: Target to sell iPhone in time for holidays?
Target may become the next U.S. retailer to offer the iPhone in its stores, according to a new report. 7% of Americans have made video phone calls post-iPhone 4
About seven percent of the US has made a video call on a cellphone, Pew Research found in a study posted today. Although still relatively new in the country, mobile video chat is now large enough to compare to the 23 percent of total Internet users that have used video. The demographics were more likely to include wealthier users making over $75,000 per year but also relatively younger audiences, below 50.

Office 2008 users: 12.2.7 update is available
With about two weeks to go until Office 2011 ships, Microsoft is making sure that Office 2008 is safe and sound with a security and stability update. The 12.2.7 update can be downloaded and installed by running Check for Updates from the Help menu in any of the Office 2008 apps, or letting Microsoft AutoUpdate do its job.
What's in the update? For Microsoft Excel, it's a bug fix. According to Microsoft, the update "fixes issues that cause Excel to crash or close unexpectedly sometimes when you try to start an Excel application." And for those of you who use Entourage (Anyone? Anyone?

Apple Peel 520 iPod phone case could face Apple lawsuit
The Apple Peel 520 case for the iPod touch that shipped last month may be the subject of a lawsuit from Apple, a report indicated Wednesday. The case interfaces with the iPod using Apple's dock connector, but the company does not have the license necessary to do so, hence analysts in China believe a lawsuit from Apple is looming, according to Digitimes. Apple awarded three major multi-touch patents
Have you noticed that since mid-2007, a lot of other phone manufacturers have come out with multi-touch displays that are all but identical to those on the iPhone? I certainly noticed, and it made me wonder if Steve Jobs's January 2007 claim regarding multi-touch, "Boy have we patented it," was just an idle threat.
As it turns out, Jobs's claim was just a few years early. Patently Apple reports that, as of yesterday, Apple has been awarded three very important multi-touch related patents. iPhone coming to Target stores?
Target will begin carrying the iPhone in the near future, sources tell AppleInsider. The big-box retailer only recently began selling the iPad, expanding an existing selection of Apple gear. The iPhone would tie into the addition of cellphone centers at 850 Target outlets, just in time for the holiday shopping season. The program is being run in cooperation with Radio Shack, which is providing the system needed for in-store activations.

Taiwan phone makers balking at Windows Phone 7?
Microsoft may have lost key Taiwan phone manufacturers after the costs and long delays for Windows Phone 7, companies based in the area reportedly said Wednesday. Most of them, including relative heavyweights such as Compal, Foxconn, Inventec and Pegatron, have committed to developing for Android over the next two to three years and aren't ready to switch. The Digitimes contacts further allege that they consider Microsoft's licensing fee too expensive when Google gives away Android for free.

iPhone shipping times drop in the UK, 6 month 0% finance offered
Last week, those wanting to buy an iPhone 4 in the U.S. got good news when they heard that shipping times for the phone had been reduced. Now the UK gets to share in that good news, too.
The UK Apple Online Store is now selling iPhone 4s with a 2 week dispatch time, reduced from the previous 3 week wait. Both the 16 and 32 gigabyte models have a 2 week dispatch time, while the iPhone 3GS has a 1 - 2 week wait.
Mind you, most network providers and Apple's own retail stores seem to have stock readily available if you're willing to walk in and get it.

Razer kicks out wireless Naga mouse
Professional gaming peripherals maker Razer just announced its latest wireless MMO gaming mouse in the Naga Epic. It now goes cordless and sports 17 MMO-optimized buttons and can be customized thanks to three included and interchangeable ergonomic side panels. Nokia N8 costs as much as iPhone 4 to make
Nokia's N8 costs just as much as an iPhone 4 to make despite wildly varying device prices, iSuppli estimated on Wednesday. The two smartphones were in a dead heat as the N8's parts and assembly were put at $187.47, or just four cents lower than Apple's phone. It came even as Nokia used a more advanced 12-megapixel camera, an AMOLED screen and HDMI output.

Sam's Club to carry iPhone, iPad
Membership-based chain Sam's Club will begin carrying the iPhone and iPad in the near future, parent company Walmart has announced. No timeline for the rollout has been given beyond the holiday season, but the company says it is trying to increase the quality in its electronics, health and fresh food sections. Walmart-branded stores are already carrying the iPhone, and should start selling iPads this Friday.

The latest application from The Iconfactory, Take Five, is meant to eliminate one pesky problem: the realization that you've been wearing headphones that aren't pumping out any music. I'm glad to say that it succeeds.
Consider this scenario. You're working at your desk while listening to music on your iPhone or iPod touch. An interruption arises, like a phone call or the need for quiet concentration, so you hit the pause button. Once the interruption is over, you're too involved in the resulting task to realize that you've been wearing headphones and listening to nothing for goodness knows how long.
I've done it, and it's a bit embarrassing.

T-Mobile won't confirm the G2 OTA update, says it's working to deliver WiFi calling and tethering 'in the future'
We're still not sure what's up with the few reports of G2s receiving OTA updates that add WiFi calling and native hotspot support, but T-Mobile isn't fessing up to them just yet. In a statement issued to Phone Scoop, T-Mobile said that these features "are not currently supported" on the handset, although T-Mobile thankfully added that it "knows these features are important to consumers and we're working to deliver them to G2 users in the future." It's hard to tell if that means an update is just minutes away from widespread distribution, or if we've still got weeks or months to wait for these features.

Here I go again, professing my love for keyboard shortcuts. I have shortcuts and hotkeys for just about everything I do on a daily basis. I'm running out of intuitive combinations, actually, but my muscle memory seems to have room for a few more. There's one shortcut, though, that I think every Safari user -- keyboard-obsessed or not -- really should know about.
If you have a Mac, and forgive my bold assumption that you do, you already have your own copy of Safari's lesser-known keyboard shortcuts on your drive. «Back to the Mac»: Apple Special Event am 20. Oktober
Am 20. Oktober findet in der Town Hall auf dem Apple-Campus in Cupertino der nächste Special Event statt. Apple hat heute die Einladungen zu der Veranstaltung unter dem Titel «Back to the Mac.» verschickt. In der Einladung schreibt Apple «come see what’s new for the Mac…» und kündigt einen Ausblick auf die nächste Version von Mac OS X an. Dem Bild auf der Einladung zufolge dürfte diese den Namen «Mac OS X 10.7 Lion» tragen. Die Veranstaltung findet wie gewohnt um 10 Uhr Lokalzeit statt, dies entspricht 19 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit.

Analyst: Foxconn prices up for Apple, Nokia with pay raise
Citibank analyst Chang Kaiwei claimedd to investors today that Foxconn would be raising the prices it charges companies like Apple, Microsoft and Nokia to compensate for the second pay raise for its workers. The unspecified charges, which would take effect this month, would keep Foxconn's profits up while hopefully improving the welfare of employees. Foxconn and its parent company Hon Hai didn't confirm the plans.

Apple shares crack $300 barrier
Fueled by overnight trading, Apple shares have climbed over $300 for the first time in the company's history. Prices have been rising aggressively in recent months, growing 25 percent since August alone. The leap is even more significant when compared to March 9th, 2009, a point at which the impact of global recession pushed shares down to a close of $83.11, and still lower during mid-day trading.

Apple TV Hacks: Ports and wikis
The Apple TV jailbreak community remains in a holding pattern. As yet, the greenp0ison and limera1n jailbreak tools do not install command-line/full file access to the box, a precondition for most kinds of application development. That doesn't mean there aren't interesting events going on, however.
If you're a hardware hacker, iFixit has a great DIY project for you. Step 8 of their teardown suggests that it shouldn't be hard to solder on a standard iPod docking connector. Over at the #awkwardtv channel of irc.moofspeak.net, hobbyist davilla (of atv-bootloader/atv-creator fame) is attempting to make that hack a reality.

By default Chumbys are cuddly but not exactly mobile. Then along came the Chumby One, not even cuddly and exactly zero percent more mobile. EMGRobotics is here to solve that issue with a Chumbified port of RobotSee, a robotics-specific language developed by Eric Gregori. The One here is paired with a Freescale accelerometer and manages to walk all by its lonesome without falling over. Boom! AAPL share price over $300 for the first time today
If the wizards of Cupertino take note of such milestones, there are probably bottles of champagne being uncorked this morning. Apple's stock price has been hovering above $300 per share since the market opened, marking yet another all-time high for the consumer electronics company.
While nobody knows for sure if AAPL will close above $300 per share this afternoon, it's nice to see another record being toppled. Apple will report Q4 financial results on Monday, October 18th, and TUAW will be liveblogging the earnings call. Das Meo getaufte Vehikel soll nämlich einen Game-Modus haben, in dem der Nutzer stehend mit Meos "Ohren" steuert und gegen andere Meos antreten kann - was dann auf so etwas wie Autoscooter hinaus läuft. Dazu soll Meo auch noch einen Unterhaltungsmodus besitzen, in dem das Auto Grimassen schneidet und seinem Besitzer ein Liedchen trällert.

A senior iPhone director at Apple, Farrel Farhoudi, has been summoned to appear in front of the South Korean parliament on October 21st, says Bloomberg. Auf seinem Weg nach oben hat Apples Aktienkurs eine weitere Hürde genommen. Im vorbörslichen Handel lag der Kurs der Apple-Aktie (AAPL) heute erstmals über 300 US-Dollar. Der Kurs stieg um 2.21 auf 300.75 Dollar. This past weekend at IndieCade 2010 in Los Angeles, I bumped into our old buddy Steph Thirion. He's the creator of the great Eliss iPhone app and a title that he's still working on called Faraway, which despite still being in development, was actually chosen as an IndieCade finalist this year. Dieses schnuckelige Lego-Teil kann deutlich mehr als das Windows Phone 7 aus Lego, aber deutlich weniger als die T-Shirt-Faltmaschine aus Lego - jedenfalls wenn es um die Verwendung des Bauklotzsystems an sich geht. Denn natürlich macht die Lego Wiimote alles, was die Wiimote sonst auch drauf hat, aber leider ist der variable Lego-Anteil am Gehäuse dabei aufs Ornament beschränkt. Schade aber toll und in den USA für rund 40 Dollar zu haben: Die offizielle Lego-Version des Wii-Controllers.

Tripolar makes a big point of saying that it's not a match-3 game, and though the grid looks similar to that matching genre, it's really not. But it is a puzzle game. The idea is that you have pieces coming in on top of the board, and touching anywhere on the grid will insert that piece and delete any like-colored pieces around it. Any pieces of a different color will switch to the next color in order. It sounds a little confusing, but in practice, it works pretty well.
There's a timed mode, which challenges you to score as many points as possible in a certain amount of time, and a puzzle mode, which requires you to clear 50 different boards by putting the right pieces in the right places. Webcam-spying school district settles out of court, FBI declines to press charges
Looks like the Lower Merion School District will be paying off kids who got zinged by its laptop tracking program -- to the tune of some $610,000. As you might recall, there was quite a bit of hubbub earlier this year when students discovered that their school issued computers tended to activate their webcams and shoot the photos back to administrators. The Fisheye lens function has a 12mm focal length and can capture a 160-degree angle of view and offers extreme close-up of shots up to as little as half and inch from the lens. Intel hat mal wieder ein Rekordquartal hinter sich gebracht: bei einem Umsatz von 11,1 Milliarden Dollar haben sie 3 Milliarden Dollar Gewinn gemacht, das beste Ergebnis bisher für Intel. Dafür verantwortlich sind vor allem je drei Prozent Zuwachs bei den Chips für Laptops und Server, Atoms haben allerdings nicht dazu beigetragen, deren Verkauf ist nämlich um vier Prozent zurückgegangen. Android Police will erfahren haben, dass es bereits nächste Woche das SDK für Gingerbread aka Android 3.0 geben soll. Die Quelle soll jemand sein, der den Entwicklern nahesteht und schon seit geraumer Zeit Gingerbread testet und damit arbeitet. Froyo ist zwar erst im Mai erschienen, was den bisherigen Halbjahreszyklus neuer Versionen etwas verkürzt, es könnte aber gut sein, dass man den Entwicklern die Chance geben möchte, möglichst früh Erfahrungen mit der neuen Version zu sammeln. FCC tackles cellphone carriers over ëbill shockí
The Federal Communications Commission is proposing to introduce rules forcing cellphone carriers to automatically notify users when their monthly usage limits on calls or texts is near its limit. Zune Software auf dem Weg zum Mac zwecks Windows Phone Sync?

Gestern abend war es noch ein Gerücht, verbreitet von Microsofts Oded Ran. Der hatte via Twitter verraten, dass Mac-User ihre Windows Phone 7 Handys in Zukunft mit einer OS X-Version der Zune Software synchronisieren können. Der Tweet wurde allerdings ziemlich schnell gelöscht. Kurz danach hat Microsoft dann bestätigt, dass es eine Sync-App für Windows Phone 7 Handys für den Mac als Beta noch in diesem Jahr geben wird, ob sie dann wirklich Zune heissen wird, ist unklar.

Intel meldet Gewinnsprung von 59 Prozent im dritten Quartal
Intel hat im dritten Quartal (bis 25. September) 11,1 Milliarden Dollar (7,9 Milliarden Euro) umgesetzt, 18 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Der gestern veröffentlichten Bilanz zufolge kletterte der Gewinn um 59 Prozent auf 2,96 Milliarden Dollar (2,1 Milliarden Dollar) oder 0,52 Dollar je Aktie. Damit übertrifft der Chiphersteller auch das Ergebnis des zweiten Quartals, welches das erfolgreichste Vierteljahr in der 42-jährigen Unternehmensgeschichte war.

iPhone 4 ist anfälliger auf Beschädigungen als seine Vorgänger
Die Gefahr, dass ein iPhone 4 beispielsweise durch Herunterfallen beschädigt wird, ist deutlich höher als beim Vorgänger iPhone 3GS. Dies geht aus einer Statistik von SquareTrade hervor. SquareTrade bietet Versicherungen für iPhones und weitere Geräte gegen Beschädigungen zum Beispiel durch versehentliches Herunterfallen an. Bisher haben 4.7 Prozent der iPhone-4-Besitzer einen Schaden gemeldet, das sind 68 Prozent mehr als beim iPhone 3GS (2.8 %) im vergangenen Jahr. In den allermeisten Fällen ist die Ursache für die Schadensmeldung ein zerstörtes Displayglas (wobei Beschädigungen der Glas-Rückseite auch dazugezählt werden).
Abgesehen von den Beschädigungen durch Unfälle ist das iPhone 4 allerdings wie schon sein Vorgänger äusserst zuverlässig. Bisher beklagten sich weniger als 0.5 Prozent der iPhone-4-Besitzer über technische Probleme mit dem Gerät, damit ist das iPhone weitaus zuverlässiger als beispielsweise BlackBerrys oder Palm Treos.

Und da ist auch schon das erste Hands-On unserer US-Kollegen, direkt von Sonys Internet TV / Google TV Launch Event in New York. Spass scheint die nerdige Fernbedienung zu machen, die sich gut bedienen lässt, allerdings ist das optische Mauspad oben rechts wohl ziemlich ungenau, was die Sony-Leute aber auf Interferenzen schoben. Vergangene Nacht hat Apple neue Software-Vorabversionen für Entwickler zum Download freigegeben. Informationen über Neuerungen gegenüber früheren Betas sind nur spärlich bekannt. Neben den üblichen Bugfixes und Detailoptimierungen hat Apple offenbar neue SMS-Klingeltöne hinzugefügt, wobei sich jedem Kontakt ein eigener Ton zuweisen lässt (in der Beta 3 nur auf dem iPhone 4).

Apple thinks of the children, patents parental-controlled text communication
US patent 7814163 has been granted to Apple under the title "Text-based communication control for personal communication device." It describes the ability to control content sent and received from an "administered device" as defined by a parental control application. If objectionable content is detected based on a table of words stored locally on the device, the content can either be removed or the message blocked entirely. Auf ihren Internetseiten kann man sich jetzt vorab registrieren. Die Vodafone-Version wird wohl mit Sim-Lock vertrieben werden, die von o2 ohne, bestätigt haben die Anbieter das allerdings noch nicht. Das sind nun die offiziellen Details zu Sonys Google TV Launch Event: vier HDTVs (24-, 32- , 40- und 46-Zoll) mit Preisen von 599 bis 1399 Dollar, dazu eine Set-Top Box mit eingebautem Blu-ray Player für 399 Dollar. Der mit 24-Zoll kleinste Fernseher kommt mit CCFL-hintergrundbeleuchtetem LCD, die größeren Modelle haben Edge Lit LED-Backlight und alle haben WiFi, so dass man sich zusätzliches Strippenziehen sparen kann. French display company Nemoptic reportedly goes bankrupt
Remember that dual-mode OLED / Binem display from yesterday? Well, then you might want to hang onto those memories, as the company behind it has apparently now gone bankrupt. While there's no official word from the company itself, French website Actualitte is reporting that the company, Nemoptic, was more than three million euros in debt and has been unable to find a buyer to bail it out. Of course, there's always a chance that another company could now swoop in and pick up Nemoptic's IP now that it's in receivership, though there's obviously no guarantees.

Microsoft hints at Zune for Mac to sync Windows Phone 7
Microsoft's Windows Phone marketing lead in the UK, Oded Ran, today claimed in a Twitter update (since deleted) that a Zune client would be available for the Mac to help sync Windows Phone 7 devices. A few weeks ago on TUAW TV Live, my guest Sam Levin of AppMinute podcast fame showed off an iPad stand that he was excited about -- the PropUp (US$24.95). At first I thought he was waving some sort of Nerf flying toy around, but then he showed me how it worked and I was impressed.

Amazon's iPhone app gets barcode scanning update
Earlier today, Keith reported that Delicious Library developer Wil Shipley had barcode scanning on his radar as a future iteration for the late, lamented iPhone version of the popular catalog app. Lo and behold, within a few hours the newest update to the Amazon Mobile app hit the store -- featuring, you guessed it, barcode scanning.
With the new 1.2.8 version of the free app, and an iPhone 4 or 3GS running iOS 4.x, you can quickly scan a product barcode to search Amazon's catalog for matching items. The scanning screen offers a handy bracketing guide to show you where to position your product, and once you get the hang of it the scanning is very quick.

Esquire Magazine comes to the iPad in style
It's been interesting watching the evolution of electronic magazines as they adapt to a changing world where digital delivery slowly replaces more traditional methods of distribution. Clearly all the kinks aren't worked out yet (witness the Adobe security issue that's led to free magazines and newspapers for some iPad users) but change is on the march.
Esquire has released a US $4.99 issue that is fun to read and great to look at. Esquire first appeared way back in 1932 when the US was in a depression. People were searching for something diverting, and the glossy magazine pointed to a lifestyle many could only dream about.

It never really occurred to us that Windows Phone 7 buyers wouldn't be able to use their phones in tandem with Apple computers, but here's the confirmation all spelled out: Microsoft's Oded Ran recently tweeted that Zune will let Mac users sync WP7 phones, presumably using an OS X compatible version of the desktop software package. Of course, since the tweet was deleted shortly after it was written, it's possible this was some sort of mistake, but if buyers find the twain incompatible come launch day, you'd best believe there's going to be some consumer outrage. Here's hoping that if the software does exist, it'll sync good ol' Zune media players as well.

GameSalad announces GameSalad Direct, publishing model outside of Apple's dev program
We've posted about GameSalad here before -- the company offers up a third-party development and publishing solution that allows anyone, even non-coders, to jump into the GS SDK, make a game, and then quickly publish it out to the web or platforms like Apple's App Store. The company has been narrowing its focus recently after a round of funding -- last week at GDC, it announced that the Gendai Games brand was no more, and instead it would be consolidating everything under the name "GameSalad."
This week GameSalad continued in that focus with a service called GameSalad Direct. Previously, developers could pay a fee to simply remove GameSalad's branding from apps created w

Intel reports record $11.1 billion earnings, brings home $3 billion in bacon
Looks like Intel's having its best quarter ever all over again -- this time, the company's reporting $3.0 billion in profit on a record $11.1 billion in revenue. Chipzilla attributes the increases to three percent increases in laptop and server chips sales respectively, but none to Atom-based netbooks -- sales of Atom chips actually decreased by four percent. That may be more than you needed or wanted to know about the booming processor business, but humanitarians will be pleased to know it's not all about the silicon; Intel also hired 1,300 new flesh-and-blood employees last quarter to keep the machines running.

Video software makers Singular Software, fresh on the heels of an update of their PluralEyes companion to Final Cut Pro, have announced a public beta for PluralEyes for Adobe Premiere Pro for Mac. The software works with input from either the CS4 or CS5 versions of Premiere Pro.

Motorola sues Apple for 18 alleged patent infringements
Motorola is the latest company to file a patent lawsuit against Apple, suggesting in court that Apple has infringed on proprietary Motorola technologies in its mobile devices. Motorola itself filed papers about 18 different infringements. Its subsidiary Motorola Mobility Inc filed three more, as well as a trade complaint regarding technologies including a system to distribute message traffic and various systems like that.
Truth be told, this is all pretty esoteric -- Microsoft just recently sued Motorola for the same type of thing, and technology patents are often so vague and far-reaching that I suspect none of this is ever meant to actually reach court. Apple's lawyers will determine what the settleme

Sony Google TV HDTVs and Blu-ray player launch details revealed
Straight from Sony's Google TV unveiling in New York we finally know the official details of its plans, which include four HDTVs (24-, 32- , 40- and 46-inch) with prices from $599 to $1,399, plus a funky white set-top box with built-in Blu-ray player for $399. The 24-inch is a CCFL backlit LCD, while the larger models all feature edge LED lighting, while all of them feature built in WiFi, so no need to go stringing any new network cables to the living room. Intel admits iPad may dent PC sales, expects both to grow
Intel during the call to discuss its summer results acknowledged that the iPad could be having an effect on computer sales but downplayed the long-term effect. Executives said Apple's tablet was likely taking away sales "at the margin" as customers without a large income often had to choose between one device or another. A similar effect happened with netbooks, Intel claimed, but eventually both regular notebook and netbook sales grew substantially.
