There’s a trademark for thatWie TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) berichtet, hat Apple bereits am 4. Dezember 2009 beim U.S.-Patentamt Schutzrechte für den Werbe-Slogan "There's an app for that" beantragt. Die Behörde hat dem nun stattgegeben. Der Spruch ist jetzt eine Schutzmarke. Er soll das vielfältige Angebot im App Store verdeutlichen, war aber auch schon häufig Opfer von Parodien in amerikanischen Comedy-Shows.

Yahoo! Mesenger app updated, offers free voice and video calling
The Yahoo! Messenger app has received a pretty significant upgrade today -- the app now lets you make video and voice calls to Yahoo! Messenger friends. That has a few interesting outcomes, the first of which is that you can now make video calls from any iPhone running iOS 4.1 to anywhere with a Yahoo! Messenger account, including back to PCs running the client there. We haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but the app is a free download, so you can see for yourself if you want. You can also make free voice calls between friends, or for an extra fee, call out to phones around the world.

Windows Phone 7. We came, we saw, we took lots and lots of photos. Adobe has updated BrowserLab, a hosted service that lets web designers preview websites in different browsers and operating systems. The upgrade includes Safari 5 support, along with a Firebug add-on that gives Firefox users the ability to preview edits made with Firebug. Rumor: No 4G for Apple in 2011
Are we tired of all the rumors around a 4G Verizon iPhone yet? First it's off, then it's on, and now it's off again. TechCrunch's Steve Cheney claims he's heard from sources that Apple won't support the 4G/LTE cell network in 2011, which means that we won't see a 4G iPhone next year. Cheney claims Apple is going to wait on the standard, and instead implement a dual-mode GSM and CDMA iPhone sometime in 2011.
That still leaves the possibility of other carriers open, though, and it does corroborate what we've heard from the Wall Street Journal, which said a while back that Apple would bring

Analyst: Tablet market likely to become Android-controlled
Despite the iPad's current success, Android will eventually control the lion's share of tablet sales, suggests Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. These are great -- a company called Jailbreak Toys (name unrelated -- I think) has apparently been selling a set of "App Magnets," little square magnets that feature icons for Apple's official iPhone apps. How cool -- I'd love to have a Photos, Safari, or an App Store icon to pin things up on the fridge for me.

MAG dev demonstrates Move support, it only does point and spray (video)
The PlayStation Move is out, and gamers everywhere are throwing away their DualShock controllers, spirits carried aloft by the liberating breeze of motion gaming. SFR accidentally confirms Palm Pre 2 with 1GHz chip
French carrier SFR accidentally gave away HP's smartphone plans in a major fashion with a page for the Palm Pre 2. The promo suggests speed is the focus with a much faster 1GHz processor (up from 500MHz) with the same 512MB RAM as the Pre Plus. It adds that webOS 2.0 will ship with it and will make Facebook a heavy focus, with push messages, status updates and Facebook Chat woven into the OS.

Writers' software month: iA Writer
I posted a few days ago that October is turning out to be a wonderful month for writers who enjoy trying out new word processing software. Today I want to tell you about an iPad app.There are a ton of word processing apps for the iPad and, in my opinion, Pages is still the best by far due to the rich feature set. This might change, however, if Apple ever decides to open up their styled-text and other iWork suite APIs to developers. Until then, it's hard for one iPad word processor to really distinguish itself from the next in a significant way. One app that has, however, is called iA Writer.

Apple trademarks 'There's an app for that'
Apple has been awarded a US trademark for the phrase "There's an app for that," reports note. A filing was originally submitted to the USPTO in December 2009, and claims commercial use dating back to January 26th of that year. The slogan lies at the core of Apple's efforts to promote the App Store and the iPhone, and has become a common staple of pop culture, often parodied.

iPhone social apps beating top TV shows for attention
Socially aware iPhone apps and games have a larger audience than some of the top TV shows, Flurry said. Comparing its data with Nielsen TV ratings, the ad group estimated that 19 million Apple device owners use connected titles for at least as long as a prime-time TV show, or 22 minutes. The pace is enough to have the apps eclipse the viewing time for NBC's Sunday Night Football and Fox's NFL Sunday as well as much of CBS' evening lineup.

Virgin Galactic's VSS Enterprise completes first solo glide flight
It completed its first flight with a crew on board back in July, and Virgin Galactic's VSS Enterprise (a.k.a. France's SFR jumps gun, announces Palm Pre 2: 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, webOS 2.0
It's unclear if the tiny, little shot posted on French carrier SFR's Club SFR pour Palm blog is in fact the rumored upcoming Pre 2 or just an old Pre shot, but let's put it this way: considering that we can't readily tell the difference, it better be an old one. Kanex today brought out a trio of display adapters to hook up older computers with Apple's newer Cinema Displays as well as newer computers to the 30-inch Cinema Display. Apple considering MagSafe charger on iPad
Here's something to get your mind wondering this Monday afternoon. Patently Apple is reporting that Apple may be considering integrating the MagSafe Power Port to its portable products, like the iPad.
The continuation patent, published on October 7th 2010 by the US Patent and Trademark Office, clearly depicts what looks like an iPhone / iPod touch / iPad with figure 62 revealing what appears to be a power connector. Eminem publisher asks for judge to enforce $2.2M settlement
Eminem's publisher, Eight Mile Style, has asked for a US District Court judge in Detroit to enforce a settlement against Apple worth $2.2 million, according to The Detroit News. The companies reached the agreement in October 2009 after a short court trial, during which Eight Mile contested the right of Aftermath Records -- owned by Universal -- to use an existing record deal to sell Eminem's music via iTunes. The value of the settlement was not revealed publicly until this weekend.

Windows Phone 7 to catch up with copy-and-paste in 2011
Microsoft as part of its Windows Phone 7 event confirmed that the mobile OS would add copy-and-paste text in early 2011. Team leader Joe Belfiore promised that every launch WP7 device onwards would get an update to add the feature. The Microsoft-controlled update system should let it reach the devices at the same time rather than the months-long delays that have affected Windows Mobile.

There aren't many CDMA Windows Phone 7 phones hanging around the WP7 launch event, but Sprint's 3.6-inch HTC 7 Pro ended up in our warm hands just moments ago. Sadly, HTC didn't have a working unit (no, IMDb demos for you!), but we did get to check out the hardware and its extremely comfortable QWERTY keyboard. As for the slider mechanism, it's quite sturdy, and we're definitely digging HTC's good old tilt capability. AT&T U-verse Mobile preview
We just got a look at U-verse Mobile running live on Windows Phone 7. It looks just like every other Windows Phone 7 app, of course, but it looks like AT&T isn't cutting this thing off at the knees content-wise. From the phone you'll have access to your entire DVR for scheduling and checking the program guide, and you'll also be able to see any episodes you have recorded on your box. Within that view you can find a subset of shows that have been flagged by the content providers to allow streaming (free-for-all Sling this is not). No LTE iPhone coming in 2011?
Apple has no plans to release any form of LTE iPhone in 2011, whether for AT&T, Verizon or otherwise, a report suggests. While Verizon is widely expected to get a CDMA-based iPhone in early 2011, sources say that neither this nor the regular mid-year iPhone update will be LTE-compatible. AT&T and Verizon are each launching LTE networks in 2011, which amongst other things should allow for a single phone model to operate across both carriers.

Samsung's Omnia 7, ladies and gents. The only Super AMOLED in Microsoft's launch Windows Phone 7 stable, the Omnia 7 looks appropriately vibrant and richly saturated. To be perfectly fair, we didn't note a major advantage in using its display relative to the other WP7 devices, but that's more a mark of distinction on the other phones on show here. The hardware really is looking polished to perfection. The Omnia 7 isn't really breaking with that trend, with a remarkably lightweight body that combines straight lines with a nicely curved back that sits well in the hand. Meet the new AT&T Windows Phone 7 family
Here they are. Are you impressed? From left to right we have: The Samsung Focus, HTC 7 Surround, and the LG Quantum. Indoors at least the Focus is easily winning the screen game, with the best blacks of the bunch thanks to AMOLED (and of course the requisite oversaturation), but the Surround and Quantum don't slouch on LCDs. Fix coming for clock bug affecting Australian iOS users
A fix is coming for an iOS bug Australians have been coping with for roughly a week, according to Apple. Since Sunday last week, people in some areas of the country -- including New South Wales, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Tasmania -- have discovered that the Clock app is not properly registering a daylight savings switchover. Recurring alarms are said to be going off an hour earlier than scheduled.

HTC Mozart im ersten Hands On

Das HTC Mozart macht laut unseren US-Kollegen-Patscherchen einen wertigen Eindruck. Das WP7-Fon der Taiwanesen verfügt nämlich über eine Aluminium-Unibody-Konstruktion, was im Vorhinein schon Solidität ausstrahlt. If you've got enough time to breathe, you're not doing it right. Our crazy tour through Windows Phone 7 land is continuing with the LG Optimus 7. We must admit we were very pleasantly surprised by this handset. The 3.8-inch is a mere LCD, and the construction seems to be wholly plastic, but both seem to be punching well above the weight of their constituent elements. It's a well chiselled, handsome and light phone, with a trio of physical buttons at the bottom. Whether you like those will really depend on personal preference, we tend to like the clicky tacticle feedback we get over touch-sensitive capacitive buttons. LG has outfitted the handset with the bone stock WP7 interface, but has augmented the offering with its own apps, namely Play-To for getting friend

HTC 7 Trophy first hands-on!
Here's yet another HTC handset from the WP7 launch today: the 7 Trophy. Features like the 3.8-inch WVGA LCD, 1GHz Snapdragon and the 5MP camera certainly sound familiar; even the phone's battery cover has taken a design cue from the Desire -- same peel-off method, and same matte texture. Apple has been awarded a trademark for the phrase, "There's an app for that." The tagline has been used to promote the App Store and iOS devices almost since their inception, and has really caught on. From tech articles to jokes told around the water cooler, many people have adopted the phrase.
The trademark, which Apple filed for on December 4th, 2009, covers "Retail store services featuring computer software provided via the Internet and other computer and electronic communication networks; retail store services featuring computer software for use on handheld mobile digital electronic devices and other consumer electronics."

NVIDIA rolls out GeForce GT 430 with HDMI audio for $79
NVIDIA today confirmed its rumored entry-level video chipset, the GeForce GT 430. The design is targeted at home theater computers and other systems where video playback support is more important than raw 3D performance and now supports HDMI with passthrough audio. It can output HDMI 1.4a for full 3D video along with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound.

One Million Dollar App für Android - kann sonst so gar nichts

Es ist vielleicht die teuerste Android-App auf dem Markt. Nämlich eine ganze Million kostet diese App, die erstmal runtergeladen werden kann und nach einer PayPal-Überweisung von exakt 1.000.000 Dollar registriert wird. Das Ergebnis ist ein Einblick in eine Liste, die zeigt, welcher Pfosten sich sonst noch die App gezogen hat. Die grafische Anmutung verspricht auf jeden Fall edelstes. Sollte sich nur einer in der Welt gefunden haben, der für solche Schandtaten bereit ist, die Entwickler dürfte das kontomäßig enorm erfreuen. Wir lassen lieber die Hosen runter.

Telekom bestätigt: Windows Phone 7 kommt am 21. Oktober nach Deutschland (UPDATE)

Die Telekom hat eben bestätigt: Ab dem 21. Oktober sind Windows-Phone-7-Geräte in Deutschland erhältlich. Bei der Telekom zumindest, das dürfte bei Vodafone und o2 aber nicht anders sein. Fünf Geräte - HTC, LG und Samsung - sind am Anfang mit dabei, bis Weihnachten werden es aber noch einige mehr werden.
Das HTC Mozart wird laut Microsoft das Flagship-Phone. Das gibt es nur bei der Telekom.
Über die Anzahl von Apps macht Microsoft keine konkreten Angaben, alle wichtigen Programme sind aber schon zur Markteinführung da. Konkret also Facebook, Twitter etc. Klar. Aber auch eBay und ein paar News-Apps von deutschen Verlagen werden verfügbar sein.

Limera1n jailbreaks most iOS devices
A new jailbreaking tool has been released for iOS devices, dubbed Limera1n. The software is capable of jailbreaking most devices running iOS 4.0 or later, including the iPad, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch. Nikon D3000, D5000 bowing out
Numerous stores have said today that Nikon is dropping the D3000 and D5000. Both entry-level DSLRs are slowing down and in some cases are no longer shipping to some camera stores, according to Nikon Rumors. Samsung Focus, HTC Surround, and LG Quantum all outed a bit early on AT&T's Windows Phone 7 site
These details aren't supposed to be live yet, we presume, but AT&T's just posted full information on its Windows Phone 7 lineup over on its site. We've got the Surround from HTC, the Samsung Focus, and the LG Quantum -- and as expected, they're a slider (sorta), a slate, and a full QWERTY slider, respectively. The Surround is touted as featuring Yamaha speakers in its slide-out surround sound arrangement with 16GB of onboard storage, the Focus is "slender and light" with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display that we imagine is ripped straight out of its Captivate stablemate, and the Quantum's listed with a 5 megapixel camera. Gerüchte über iTunes-Musik-Flatrate reissen nicht ab
Im Vorfeld des diesjährigen Musikevents, den Apple am 1. September zur Vorstellung von iTunes 10 und einer neuen iPod-Palette nutzte, machten zahlreiche Spekulationen rund um ein neues Abo-Modell im iTunes Store die Runde. Anstatt Musik zu kaufen sollte es auch möglich werden, für eine fixe Abogebühr per Streaming Zugriff auf den iTunes-Katalog zu erhalten. Im Rahmen jenes Events hatten sich die Gerüchte zwar nicht bewahrheitet, die Spekulationen gehen aber munter weiter. Wie die New York Post berichtet, befindet sich Eddy Cue, Apples iTunes-Verantwortlicher, in intensiven Gesprächen mit den wichtigsten Musiklabels. Der Artikel nennt kaum Details, einzig dass die Monatsgebühr zwischen 10 und 15 US-Dollar betragen soll. Angeblich möchte Apple mit der Musik-Flatrate auf die zunehmende Konkurrenz im Online-Musik-Geschäft reagieren.

Hitachi started its week today with what it says is the fastest professional 10,000RPM hard drive. While spinning at the same speed as rivals, the 600GB Ultrastar C10K600's 64MB of cache and optimizations help it transfer data about 15 percent faster in random seeks and 18 percent faster sequentially than the previous (though unnamed) best. Although more energy-saving than a usual desktop drive by its notebook-sized 2.5-inch design, newer power management also makes it about 22 percent more efficient than a rival.

Zwölf Millionen iPhone-Verkäufe für September-Quartal erwartet
In einer Woche wird Apple den Geschäftsbericht für das abgelaufene Quartal veröffentlichen. Einer aktuellen Analysteneinschätzung zufolge dürfte Apple einmal mehr mit positiven Zahlen überraschen. Demnach habe Apple zwischen Juli und September 2010 rund zwölf Millionen iPhones und 4.5 Millionen iPads abgesetzt. Ursprünglich rechnete man mit rund 10.5 Millionen iPhones und 3.9 Millionen iPads. Auch die Umsatz- und Gewinnprognosen wurden markant erhöht. Dem Bericht zufolge dürfte Apple rund 19.9 Milliarden US-Dollar umgesetzt und einen Gewinn von 4.41 Dollar pro Aktie erzielt haben. Die tatsächlichen Zahlen wird Apple nächsten Montag nach Börsenschluss in New York (22:30 Uhr unserer Zeit) bekannt geben.

Sieben neue iOS-Games von Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts wird diesen Herbst sieben neue Spieltitel für das iPhone und das iPad veröffentlichen. Zwei der Spiele sind im Schweizer App Store bereits erhältlich. EA Sports FIFA 11 (Affiliate-Link) ist die jüngste Version der beliebten Fussball-Simulation. Es enthält aktualisierte Spielerdatenbanken und neue Stadien. Ausserdem wird die Auflösung des Retina-Displays unterstützt.
Mit Heroes Lore (Affiliate-Link) schafft ein weiterer überaus populärer Spieletitel den Sprung auf die iOS-Plattform. Bei Heroes Lore handelt es sich um ein Fantasy-Rollenspiel, welches neben einer Einzelspielerkampagne auch einen Multiplayermodus beinhaltet. Was gab es gestern am 10.10.10.? Ubuntu 10.10 natürlich! Die Linux-Variante verbricht viele Neuerungen und Verbesserungen. Da ist das Desktop-Interface namens Unity, das auf kleinen Displays aller besser organisieren soll. Ubuntu One ist ein Cloud-basierter Speicher-Service, 2GB sind umsonst. Samsung unveils new 55-inch LCD with ultraslim bezel, invites DIY video walls
Remember the world's thinnest bezel separation touted by Sharp just this past June? Forget about it. Samsung has bested its Japanese competitor with the unveiling of a new 55-inch Digital Information Display panel that features bezels of 3.8mm on the top and left edges and 1.9mm on the bottom and right, leading to a positively svelte 5.7mm distance between the content of neighboring displays. Chef von Microsofts Live Labs tritt zurück
Gary Flake, Technical Fellow und Chef von Microsofts Abteilung Live Labs, hat per Twitter angekündigt, dass er den Softwarekonzern verlassen wird. Nach Angaben eines Sprechers scheidet Flake zu Ende Oktober aus. Grund für seine Kündigung ist scheinbar, dass Microsoft die Live Labs auflöst und in seine Bing-Sparte integriert.

Oracle kündigt Patches für 81 Sicherheitslücken an
Oracle will am kommenden Dienstag 81 Schwachstellen in mehr als hundert seiner Produkte beheben. 31 davon finden sich allein in der "Oracle Sun Products Suite". DirecTV's Nomad might satisfy our thirst for content on the go
We're always looking for ways to get one step closer to the content dream we just have to believe we are destined for -- anything, anywhere, anytime -- and a recent DirecTV survey about mobile viewing habits might be one of those things. To add to the clues, DirecTV recently trademarked the name mentioned in the survey, DirecTV Nomad, and has even gotten it UL certified with the model number MDR1R0-01. If you believe everything in the survey, you'll believe that Nomad will let you consume DirecTV on your portable device while you travel from place to place. What isn't clear is if this a streaming device like a Slingbox, or if you can copy the content onto your device and consume it on planes and trains, but with rumors just now surfacing, more than likely it'll be months before we know for sure.

If down-to-the-cent leaked prices for Sony's Google TVs sounded too good to be true, you might have been right -- the publication that reported that the sets would range from $1,299 to $1,899 has now backed away from those figures.
