'The Shack' downsizes, opens Bullseye Mobile kiosks in many Target stores
Radio Shack is at it again, expanding your perceptions of the place that once actually sold radio components. A year after that ill-received 'The Shack' marketing campaign the company is now making a rather more substantial move, securing an arrangement with Target stores to see the creation of so-called Bullseye Mobile kiosks. iPhone: Sicherheitsprobleme durch Apps?
Lookout, ein Unternehmen für mobile Sicherheit, hat während der Sicherheitskonferenz Black Hat die Ergebnisse einer Analyse von 100 000 Apps für das iPhone und Android-basiernden Smartphone-Geräten vorgestellt.
“App-Genom” nennt sich das Projekt, bei dem bereits insgesamt 300 000 Apps erfasst und davon 100 00 genauestens untersucht wurden. Folgendes Ergebnis brachten die bisherigen Untersuchungen zutage:

Dell Zino HD 410 quietly leaks out with AMD quad-core potential

Am 30. Juli, dem morgigen Freitag, startet der iPhone-4-Verkauf in 17 weiteren Ländern. Inklusive der Startländer USA, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Japan und Deutschland ist die neuste Apple-Telefongeneration damit in insgesamt 22 Ländern verfügbar. Die vierte Auflage
Seit Apple vor drei Jahren das iPhone aus der Wundertüte zog, um der Mobilfunkwelt kräftig in den Hintern zu treten, haben 18 System-Updates die vier Geräte-Generationen erreicht. Mit dem aktuellen iOS 4.0 sortiert sich erstmals alte Hardware aus dem Software-Zyklus aus. Dem silbernen Metallrücken des iPhone Classic reicht die Puste nicht für eine erneute Frischzellenkur. Mit 36 Monaten Lebenszeit gehört damit die erste Generation zum alten Eisen und verbleibt bis zu ihrem Systemtotd auf Firmware 3.1.3.
Ein Jahr später streckte das iPhone 3G seine GPS-Fühler in die Luft und zieht im Gegensatz zu seinem Vorserienmodell mit auf den 4.0-Gipfel. Dort kommt es allerdings vollkommen ausgelutscht an. Multitasking oder farbenfrohe Hintergrundbilder bleiben dem lediglich 24 Monate alten UMTS-Strahlemann verwehrt. Das führte schon

Hardware-Update: Mobiler WiFi-Hotspot von TrekStore
Ende April importierte ich aus Großbritannien ein Huawei-E5830-Modem als mobilen Hotspot für das iPad WiFi. Drei Monate später bin ich im Großen und Ganzen immer noch sehr zufrieden mit der £80-Anschaffung. Aus dem 1500mAh-Akku lässt sich bei durchschnittlichem Datendurchsatz ein ‘Arbeitsnachmittag’ quetschen. Einmal eingerichtet, werkelt der Plastikstein mit Mobilfunktechnologie zuverlässig. Das deutsche Hardware-Unternehmen TrekStore bietet das (fast) identische Gerät nun auch auf dem hiesigen Markt zum Verkauf.
TechDepot, derzeit Werbekunde auf dem iPhoneBlog, stellte mir eines dieser Geräte zur Ansicht bereit. Obwohl mittlerweile UMTS-iPads verfügbar sind, ist der mobile WLan-HotSpot immer noch eine recht nette Arbeitserleichterung.

Rover Puck to give pocketable Clearwire 4G
Clearwire is nearing the addition of an extra compact 4G router on top of its slightly larger Spot 4G models. The Rover Puck has turned up at the FCC for approval and would be very small with a namesake thin, circular design measuring just a few inches in diameter. HEADS Generation II: Helmsensor für weniger Kopfschäden
Mal wieder Neues aus der Militär-Gadgetkiste. Diesmal das so genannte HEADS (Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic System). Ein Sensor im Helm des Soldaten, das Zeichen von sich gibt, wenn der Verdacht besteht, der Träger könnte eine Gehirnerschütterung oder andere Kopfverletzungen davon getragen haben. Denn, so die Entwickler, das größte Problem sei, dass die Verletzten gar nicht merkten, wenn sie ernsthafte Blessuren davon getragen haben. Spätfolgen könnten somit minimiert werden. The Apple II computer from the hit show Lost was one of the things that unfortunately wasn't really answered as the series ended. I get that the Dharma Initiative was trying to contain a leak from the source, probably because of Jughead going off, but what was up with that scene of Michael supposedly chatting with Walt? How did Walt get to a computer, and why didn't a chat ever come up any other time? I'm sure there are theories running around out there, but I don't think the show ever provided a reasonable explanation for that one.

Auch dieses Stück allerbester Handwerkskunst darf in keinem Haushalt fehlen. Der Bottle Punch. Der durchlöchert nämlich Flaschenverschlüsse, um genau einen Strohhalm durchzulassen. The recently released PS3 firmware 3.41 seemed to just be a minor update that added a new "You May Like" section to the PlayStation Store, but it looks like it's been causing nothing but headaches for anyone trying to upgrade the hard drive in their console. Samsung's Android tablet may drop at August 11 event
Samsung gave hints on Friday that its Galaxy Tab slate could be launched within two weeks. The company confirmed in a public statement only that the seven-inch Android tablet should ship before the end of the summer, but it has also sent out an invite for a special event on August 11 that could include the Galaxy Tab. EVO 4G's Froyo firmware now available for download, manual installation
Like we said, you don't have to wait until August 3rd to get your Android 2.2 Froyo update for the EVO 4G. You can grab the update file right now from HTC's servers (via source link). Silent, easily made Android rootkit shown at Black Hat
SpiderLabs showed a rootkit at the Black Hat conference today that could compromise an Android phone without its owner's knowledge. The exploit, handed out on DVD at the hacking and security meetup, would let the wielder get complete control and personal data from an Android phone without triggering alerts. Team lead Nicholas Percoco said the app took just two weeks to build and would affect even modern Android 2.1 devices such as the HTC Desire and Legend.

UK agency clears Google Street View of stealing vital data
The UK's Information Commissioner Office on Friday found that Google's accidental Wi-Fi snooping didn't collect dangerous amounts of information. An investigation of some data saved by Google showed no "significant" levels of data that would compromise privacy or security. ICO still characterized the collection itself as "wrong" but said there was no immediate evidence of broken laws from the data itself.

UK soldiers use iPad app to train for Afghan operations

BBC Radio's Newsbeat had an exclusive look at new training being given to these soldiers. One trainee described the app as a nice alternative to classwork.
